Abstract:For WiMAX system, the tone reservation method provide a better solution to reduce peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Several in-band null subcarriers are allocated with designed complex value for tone reservation by balancing the peak amplitude of baseband complex signals and other discrete symbols. In this paper, analysis of PAPR reduction gain is given to prove that PAPR of WiMAX system can be significantly reduced through the tone reservation method. Furthermore, the worst-case scenario is analyzed for tone reservation and the searching method for lowest bound for PARP reduction is extended. Simulation results also demonstrate that the different gap between the peak and the second peak amplitude affects the efficiency of tone reservation. And our proposed calculation method provides a effective way to decide whether the transmitter should use tone reservation. Under the IEEE 802.16-2004 wireless OFDM physical layer model, in the worst-case, the highest PAPR reduction gain can approach 6.02 dB and the average PAPR reduction to 1.47 dB by tone reservation method

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm of data subcarrier designing to apply the tone reservation(TR) peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction algorithm in OFDM-based wireless communication systems and overcome the high computational cost issue. Different from the existing works, the proposed algorithm focuses on designing data subcarriers, controlling both the iteration times and the number of subcarriers. The new algorithm exhibits similar performance as the traditional TR algorithm with lower computational complexity and the ability to control the number of used subcarriers. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the PAPR by only 2 or 3 iterations.

Abstract:To overcome the drawbacks of existing tone reservation(TR) techniques,an efficient TR algorithm combined with active constellation extension (ACE-TR) was proposed for reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of or-thogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal.By means of a specially designed iterative procedure and a joint optimization approach for PAPR and bit-error-rate (BER) performances,ACE-TR was able to obtain both an im-proved BER and minimized out-of-band interference while reducing the PAPR effectively.A comprehensive theoretical analysis was presented,and some important results including the bounds of achievable PAPR gain,BER bound,and maximum iteration number were derived.Specifically,by adaptively adjusting the iterative parameters in the optimization approach,more trade-off flexibility between PAPR reduction and BER performance can be offered to satisfy various de-sign requirements.Simulations demonstrate that ACE-TR can dramatically decrease the number of required it ions to reach the desired PAPR with low computation complexity.In addition,the transmitted OFDM symbols using the pro-posed ACE-TR have less in-band distortion and lower out-of-band spectral regrowth than traditional TR algorithms.

Abstract:The peak-to-average power (PAPR) is one of the main challenges in multicarrier transmissions. Aiming at reducing the PAPR, we propose a residue number system (RNS)-based OFDM parallel transmission scheme. The key idea of the proposed scheme is to utilize the parallel property of RNS to convert the input signals into the parallel smaller residue signals while utilizing the characteristic of RNS modular operation to effectively limit the output in each residue subchannel after inverse fast Fourier transform, which is smaller than the corresponding modulus. The main contribution of the proposed scheme is to reduce the dynamic range of the transmitted signal without nonlinear distortion so as to reduce the PAPR during the transmission. A generalized performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed in this paper, including the PAPR reduction, the complexity, the transmission bandwidth, etc. Also, an approximate formula to calculate the transmission bandwidth of the proposed scheme is derived, which simplifies design procedure in practice and implies that a minor increase of the dynamic range of RNS will bring comparative improvement of the transmission bandwidth consumption. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has the ability to achieve desirable PAPR reduction and low computational complexity without nonlinear distortion.

Abstract:The inherent high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of multicarrier transmission, such as OFDM or DMT, is a major drawback that can significantly worsen the power efficiency and performance of these systems. As a consequence, a number of PAPR reduction techniques have been proposed in the literature each offering a different combination of system performance, complexity and bandwidth efficiency. However, most of the technique require high computational complexity which is undesirable. In this paper, we propose a unique PAPR reduction method using time domain signal modification which does not require any additional IFFT operations. It will be shown that our proposed technique can achieve significant PAPR reduction with low complexity and latency.

Abstract:Single Carrier-Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDM) and Tone Reservation (TR) are used independently to reduce Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) in wireless communications. In this paper, we jointly consider TR and SC-FDM to achieve much lower PAPR. We first present the PAPR of SC-FDM system with different DFT/IDFT size, and then theoretically analyze the PAPR gain of TR in SC-FDM. By considering the impact of TR on transmission power, we propose a novel metric, the effective signal power, to measure the performance of TR in SC-FDM. Afterwards, the TR optimization problem is formulated and solved by TR gradient algorithm. Finally, the performance of TR with SC-FDM is evaluated.

Abstract:This paper proposes an effective tone reservation method with null subcarriers (TRNS) to reduce the peak to average power ratio (PAPR) for so-called WiMAX system. The TRNS method utilizes a part of null subcarriers in guard band to reduce the PAPR, which satisfies the spectrum mask regulation and avoids bandwidth sacrifice. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the properties of order statistics of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. A type of low complexity TRNS method (LC-TRNS) is proposed to solve problems of the TRNS method, including high complexity and the performance degradation under low predefined threshold. Finally, a joint nonlinearity reduction scheme by predistortion and TRNS method is proposed. Not only the nonlinear distortion in the WiMAX system is reduced, but also the good tradeoff between power efficiency and system performance is achieved. Both analytical and simulation results demonstrate that those proposed methods are effective in terms of spectrum mask regulation, total degradation, complementary cumulative probability function versus PAPR threshold, and bit error rate in presence of nonlinear distortion.

Abstract:In this. paper, we propose a modified tone reservation method to reduce peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system by using null subcarriers (TR-NS), and evaluate its performance under physical layer model of IEEE standard 802.16d-2004, i.e., WiMAX systems. We first verified that the spectrum of transmitted OFDM signals processed by TR-NS method with a small number of null subcarriers do not violate the spectrum mask specified in ETSI standard. Furthermore, we explored that the gain from TR-NS method increase slightly with the number of null subcarriers, but the TR-NS method is efficient in certain extent in terms of both complementary cumulative probability function and total degradation. Additionally we found that an "efficient PAPR" [1] definitively exist for the proposed TR-NS method, where a lower predefined PAPR threshold can not promise a better peak-power reduction gain. It is worthy noting that this result differs from that of TR using arbitrary reserved tones in the literature. Finally, we compared proposed TR-NS method with clipping-like methods in terms of total degradation to show the effectiveness of the TR-NS method by simulation, in which nonlinearity distortion due to high-power amplifiers is introduced.

Abstract:PAPR problem is a major drawback of multicarrier transmission system, known as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete multitone (DMT). Tone reservation (TR) is one of the PAPR reduction methods. Minimum spanning circle method (MSCM) is a realization of TR with low computational complexity. In an OFDM system with multiple reserved tones, extended MSCM is used to get the reduction by using MSCM sequentially on each reserved tone. Actually different optimization order will result in different PAPR reduction performance. In this paper, a tone selection method in using extended MSCM is proposed, which helps get more PAPR reduction with equal number of reserved tones. The simulation results show that our tone selection method can improve the PAPR reduction performance of extend MSCM in multiple reserved tones circumstances.

Abstract:To achieve high-speed power line carrier communication in smart grid, OFDM technology is a very good choice. But the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of OFDM is a bottleneck of its practical application, and it will bring a range of problems, such as increasing the complexity of A/D conversion and reducing the effectiveness of RF power amplifiers. In this paper, TI's C6713 DSP chip is used to achieve two major algorithms of reducing peak-to-average power ratio of OFDM system, which are the clipping method and the selective mapping method. This work has some practical significance on the implementation of OFDM system in the power line carrier communication.

Abstract:To utilize white space spectrum in radio environment, transform domain communication system (TDCS) has been proposed to realize an overlay cognitive radio communication system by using spectrum bin nulling and frequency domain spreading. Being similar to OFDM systems, TDCSs still suffer from the problem of high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in present of high power amplifier. In this paper, a distortionless PAPR reduction method is proposed for TDCS, namely clipping and phase replacement (CPR). Following this method, the clipping noise-dirty phase vector is replaced by an appropriate replacement, which is selected from the identical phase mapping space to avoid systematic performance degradation. Owing to the high computational complexity from exhaust search, an efficient implementation of CPR method is proposed through the iterative PAPR reduction and phase replacement. Moreover, some considerations for practical applications, such as imperfect spectrum sensing and the number of phase taps, are considered. Analytic and simulation results demonstrate that the distortionless CPR PAPR reduction method is a preferable candidate for TDCSs in both the single-user and multi-user scenarios.

Abstract:Due to the nonlinear effect caused by the high power amplifier (HPA), wireless communication system suffers from the in-band distortion and out-band spectrum regrowth. For orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, the high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) would lead to HPA nonlinearity or inefficiency. Compared to traditional PAPR reduction methods, the tone reservation with null subcarriers method (TRNS) is a distortionless PAPR reduction method, which utilizes a part of null subcarriers to reduce PAPR without any side information. In this paper, we propose a joint scheme by predistorter and TRNS method for OFDM system. The main idea of proposed scheme is to relax constraints of the predistorter design after reducing the PAPR of OFDM signals, so that the HPA can achieve a higher saturation point and a bigger dynamic range to increase the HPA efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the BER performance, especially under lower input back-off (IBO) constraint, at IBO=3dB and SNR level of 10-3, the joint scheme can achieve 5 dB performance gain.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based scheme is proposed for peak to average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in filter-bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) systems. The key idea is the combination of DFT and the concept of block repetition. Different from the conventional DFT-based PAPR reduction method, the output complex-valued signal of the DFT module is directly transmitted in the proposed DFT-based PAPR reduction method, instead of separating and transmitting the real and imaginary parts of the output signal, respectively. The proposed method can provide a solution to the low PAPR without the cost of high complexity, signal distortion or side information. To validate the performance of the proposed method, simulation results are provided in terms of complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) and bit error ratio (BER).

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a low-complexity peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction scheme based on time-delay neural network (TDNN) for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems to reduce the limitation of PAPR on the total power of laser diodes and the impact of fiber nonlinear effects. The proposed scheme is jointly trained on traditional iterative clipping and filtering (ICF) scheme and simplified clipping and filtering (SCF) scheme, and changes the objective function by adjusting the given training weight α . Compared to the original orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal of existing system, our method achieves an adjustable PAPR reduction of 5.31 dB to 6.12 dB for 1 0 − 4 complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF). When bit error rate (BER) P e = 1 0 − 3 , the proposed scheme ( α = 0 . 5 ) achieves additional transmission distances of 220 km, 55 km, 105 km, and 100 km, compared to the original OFDM signal, partial transmission sequence (PTS) scheme, ICF scheme, and feedforward neural network (FNN)-based ICF scheme, respectively. Besides, our method achieves 86.3% and 80.0% floating-point operations (FLOPs) reductions, compared with PTS scheme and ICF scheme, respectively, which effectively reduces the complexity of PAPR reduction module, saving the system computational time.

Abstract:OFDM-based system is a strong candidate for future wireless communication. One major disadvantage of OFDM is the high peak-to-average power ratios (PAPR). This paper concentrates on the PAPR reduction and proposes an effective method. In the method, the transmitted sequence in frequency domain is separated into two sequences and are implemented IFFT respectively, and one of the two sequences is cyclic shifted, and then they are added together. The OFDM symbol with minimum PAPR is transmitted. After FFT in receiver, the data only needs to be multiplied with a simple revising matrix. Simulations and computational complexity analysis show that the proposed method compared with SLM and PTS can reduce the PAPR significantly, and has lower computational complexity.

Abstract:In tone reservation (TR) methods, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals is reduced through exploiting the reserved tones, i.e., peak-reduction tones (PRT), so as to manipulate the clipping noise generated from the soft limiter with predefined clipping threshold. In this work, from the least-squares perspective, the PRT are designed with linear operation only and a corresponding clipping threshold is proposed by a simple closed-form formula. Furthermore, a PRT-aided detection algorithm for the receiver is proposed to exploit the information embedded in the PRT, which is a linear function of the data-tone signal. The data-tones and PRT are jointly and iteratively estimated to increase the accuracy of detection. No extra receive-side information is required in the proposed method. Simulation results reveal that a remarkable gain in bit error rate (BER) is achieved.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel method to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of multicarrier signals in multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems by frequency block exploitations, named cross-frequency permutation and inversion (CFPI). Our design improves the performance and framework flexibility (compatible with both space-time and space-frequency patterns) of PAPR reduction in MIMO-OFDM system, which utilizes additional degrees of frequency freedom. Especially, this proposed design can be freely combined with many good-featured space-time or space-frequency coding to achieve better whole system performance, which is unlike the previous typical methods strictly based on space-time block coding structure with relative low data rate. Simulation results show that the good performance is achieved by our novel design.

Abstract:Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is proposed for the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which is one of the main drawbacks of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. However, its extension to multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system is not well addressed, and suffers from high complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel user-wise PAPR reduction for the downlink MC-CDMA system. The proposed scheme can be regarded as a modified version of partial transmit sequence (PTS), but with improved performance. Furthermore, this scheme can also be combined with the modified phase rotation scheme to achieve complexity reduction as well. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better PAPR performance with reduced complexity compared to conventional PTS, which leads a better trade-off among PAPR reduction, transmitting efficiency, and computational complexity.

Abstract:High peak to average power ratio (PAPR) is a particular disadvantage of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems and can significantly degrade the power efficiency at the transmitter. Selective mapping (SLM) is one of the most promising PAPR reduction techniques but invoks multiple IFFT processes thus increase the system complexity, latencies and incur high power consumption. The aim of this paper is to propose a novel post-IFFT PAPR reduction scheme combined with a intelligent strategy for generating a unique time-domain sequence per OFDM block to minimize the PAPR. The impact of the proposed method on the system's bit error rate (BER) performance will also be investigated. It will be shown that our proposed technique has better overall PAPR reduction ability than the ordinary SLM while at the same time requires several order of magnitude less complexity than that of the SLM technique.
