On the nature of English-Only Movement in USA

Abstract:During the last twenty years of the twentieth century there erupted a fierce debate about the officialization of English,the English-only movement and bilingual education in American politics.Scholars generally regard this movement as nothing more than American nationalism gone awry.Based on an extensive reading of both Chinese and English publications,this paper finds that the white ruling class craftily avail themselves of Western enlightenment and racism as a divertionary tactic to subvert class struggles,thereby uncovering the movement's deep-lying ideological source and mass appeal.It further claims,through a brief comparison with other Western countries,that the United States does not need any legislation about the English language.
