Abstract:The hypothesis that a psychomotor stimulant drug (pipradrol) enhances the reinforcing effects of stimuli paired with reinforcing brain stimulation was tested using a conditioned reinforcement paradigm. Rats were trained to discriminate between two stimuli (S+ and S−) to obtain ICS in the lateral hypothalamus by pushing a panel in the presence of S+. In a subsequent preference test, ICS was no longer available, but responding on one of two novel levers now produced S+, whereas responding on the other lever produced S−. Four groups of four rats received 0, 5, 10 or 15 mg/kg pipradrol. Doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg significantly enhanced the preference for S+ over S−. These doses increased responding for S+, but had no effect on responding for S−. These results support the hypothesis tested, and suggest that pipradrol potentiates the effects of conditioned reinforcement.

Abstract:The effects of various psychomotor stimulant drugs and drugs outside this class were examined on the efficacy of stimuli previously paired with reinforcement or reward (conditioned reinforcers, CR) in controlling responding. Pipradrol (5–45 μmol/kg), d-amphetamine (1.25–15.0 μmol/kg), and the cocaine analogues WIN 35,428 (0.1–30.0 μmol/kg) and in one of two determinations WIN 35,065-2 (0.1–29.0 μmol/kg) all generally increased responding on a lever providing CR, but did not change or decreased responding on a lever providing no CR (NCR). Cocaine (5–125 μmol/kg) and chlordiazepoxide (3.75–60.0 μmol/kg) had no significant effects. Morphine (3.2–32.0 μmol/kg) and α-flupenthixol (0.02–2.0 μmol/kg) generally reduced responding on both levers. Apomorphine (0.1–1.0 μmol/kg) generally increased responding on both levers. Neurochemical data showed that d-amphetamine was generally more potent than pipradrol in its effects on in vitro monoamine uptake and release.
The Acquisition of Responding with Conditioned Reinforcement: Effects of Pipradrol, Methylphenidate, D -Amphetamine, and Nomifensine

Abstract:The effects of pipradrol (5–15 mg/kg), methylphenidate (5–15 mg/kg), d-amphetamine (0.5–3.0 mg/kg), and nomifensine (5–15 mg/kg) on the acquisition of responding with conditioned reinforcement (CR) were examined. In preliminary training (phase 1), a panel-push was required for water-deprived rats to obtain access to a water-dipper. The presentation of the dipper occurred at variable intervals, independently of responding, and was preceded by a light stimulus. In phase 2, no water was available and presentation of light and empty dipper (CR) was contingent upon pressing one of two levers present (CR lever), according to a variable-ratio 2 schedule. Pressing the other lever had no effect (NCR lever). In Experiment I, pipradrol produced a dose-dependent increase in responding on the CR lever, but a dose-dependent decrease on the NCR lever. Methylphenidate and d-amphetamine produced inconsistent results, and nomifensine produced a general reduction in responding. The stimulation of responding by pipradrol transferred to the undrugged state, but previous experience with pipradrol outside the experimental setting did not increase responding during control sessions. Experiment II showed that the effects of repeated doses of pipradrol changed over sessions. Experiment III showed that 15 mg/kg pipradrol did not increase responding for the light and dipper stimuli when these had not previously been paired with water. The results suggest that pipradrol enhances the effects of conditioned reinforcers, and are discussed in terms of the other behavioral effects of ‘psychomotor stimulant’ drugs.
Enhanced Behavioural Control by Conditioned Reinforcers Following Microinjections of D-Amphetamine into the Nucleus Accumbens

Abstract:Stimulant drugs have been shown to enhance the control over behaviour exerted by stimuli previously correlated with primary reinforcers, termed conditioned reinforcers (CR). Experiment 1 examined the possible neuroanatomical specificity of the enhancement of conditioned reinforcement following intracerebral injections ofd-amphetamine. Thirsty rats were trained to associate, a light with water. In the test phase, water was no longer presented but the light (CR) was intermittently produced by responding on one of two novel levers. Rats with bilateral guide cannulae aimed at the nucleus accumbens, posterior caudate nucleus, or medio-dorsal nucleus of the thalamus received four counterbalanced microinfusions ofd-amphetamine (10, 20, 30 μg/2 μl) or vehicle (control) over 4 test days. There was a dose-dependent selective increase in responding on the lever that produced the light (CR) with intra-accumbensd-amphetamine infusions. Quantitatively similar, but much more variable effects were found with intra-caudate infusions and no effects following intra-thalamicd-amphetamine. Experiment 2 provided evidence that the enhanced control over responding by a CR with intra-accumbensd-amphetamine is behaviourally specific. Three groups of rats received a compound tone — plus —light stimulus that was positively, negatively or randomly correlated with water during training. Intra-accumbensd-amphetamine produced selective increases in responding only if the contingent stimulus had been positively correlated. The results suggest that the nucleus accumbens may play an important role ind-amphetamine's enhanced control over behaviour exerted by conditioned reinforcers.

Abstract:BLEULER has described stereotyped behaviour as “one of the most striking external manifestations of schizophrenia”1. Schizophrenic stereotyped behaviour has been found in the spheres of movement, action, posture, speech, writing, thought aid desire1. Abuse of the psychomotor stimulant drugs, such as the amphetamines, methylphenidate, cocaine and pipradrol, can cause a psychosis which is clinically indistinguishable from paranoid schizophrenia2, and which contains stereotyped components2,3. In animals, acute doses of the stimulants can induce stereotyped behaviour which is apparently under minimal situational control, and which can disrupt normal activity4. In contrast, low doses of the stimulants can apparently improve learning and performance in a variety of situations, in both animals5 and man6. This paper demonstrates a relationship between these two apparently diverse actions.
Potentiation of the Effects of Reward-Related Stimuli by Dopaminergic-Dependent Mechanisms in the Nucleus Accumbens

Abstract:Three experiments examined the behavioural, pharmacological and neural specificity of the previously reported potentiation of responding with conditioned reinforcement following intra-accumbensd-amphetamine, by studying the effects of intraaccumbens dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline, using an acquisition of a new response procedure. In experiment 1, the effects of intra-cerebral DA infusions (5, 20, 50 µg/2 µl) were compared in four conditions: (i) intra-accumbens DA following positive pairing of the conditioned stimulus (CS) and water during training; (ii) as (i) but also following a systemic dose of the DA receptor antagonist alpha-flupenthixol; (iii) intra-accumbens DA following random pairing of the CS and water during training; and (iv) as (i) but with intra-caudate rather than intra-accumbens DA. The results showed that only with intra-accumbens DA in the positive pairing condition was there a significant dose-dependent increase in responding. In experiment 2, the effects of a higher range of doses (20, 100, 200 µg) and smaller infusion volume (5, 25, 50 µg/l µl) of intra-accumbens DA were studied, in comparison with a similar range of doses (5, 25, 50 µg/l µl) of intra-accumbens noradrenaline (NA). Only DA produced a selective, dose-dependent increase in responding with conditioned reinforcement. In experiment 3 neurotoxic lesions of the dorsal noradrenergic bundle (DNAB) using 6-hydroxydopamine producing profound (about 90%) depletion of cortical and nucleus accumbens NA levels had no effect on the increased responding with conditioned reinforcement produced by intra-accumbensd-amphetamine (3, 10, 30 µg/l µl). The results are discussed in terms of the neurochemical mediation of the potentiation of the effects of conditioned reinforcers byd-amphetamine and the role of DA-dependent mechanisms of the nucleus accumbens in reward-related processes.
Increased Response Switching, Perseveration and Perseverative Switching Following D-Amphetamine in the Rat

Abstract:Four experiments examined the effects of d-amphetamine on response switching and perseveration in apparatus allowing a choice of response location. The relative ‘cost’ of a switch between two response locations and repetitive responding at a single location by rats was manipulated in the various test settings to provide baseline probabilities of switching. d-Amphetamine (0.2–2.3 mg/kg) increased response switching. This effect did not depend on switching being necessary to produce reinforcement and was not explained by increases in locomotor activity, motivational change or randomisation of responding. Further evidence was provided in support of a ‘probability-dependency’ hypothesis, that the effect of the drug depends in part upon the baseline probability of a response. A measure of perseveration independent of response switching (extra responses made prior to the collection of food) showed that increased switching and increased perseveration occurred in the same situation at the same doses, although perseveration generally occurred at higher doses than increased switching. Therefore the effect of amphetamine on response switching or repetition depends on the dose of drug, the context of the response and its probability of occurrence under control conditions.

Abstract:Research has examined how stimulants affect impulsive choice in delay-discounting tasks, but little is known about whether such drugs influence how discounting varies with reward magnitude. This study sought to investigate the effects of acute and chronic methamphetamine administration on rats' responding in a rapid acquisition choice task in which reward delays were changed unpredictably across sessions. In each group of four sessions, delays were unequal (1 s/8 s, or 8 s/1 s) or equal (1 s/1 s, or 8 s/8 s) while reward magnitudes were constant and unequal (one dipper cycle/four dipper cycles). This enabled us to obtain both estimates of delay discounting (i.e., sensitivity to delay) and the magnitude effect (in which larger rewards are discounted at a lower rate). Methamphetamine was administered in increasing doses acutely and chronically. Baseline results showed that rats reliably preferred the alternative with a shorter delay and that choice for the larger reward was greater when the delays were long, consistent with the magnitude effect. Acute methamphetamine dose dependently reduced both sensitivity to delay and the magnitude effect, but not sensitivity to magnitude. Chronic administration had no systematic effect on choice. This study is the first to report a magnitude effect with rats in a rapid acquisition choice procedure similar to that found in delay discounting research with humans, and suggests that acute methamphetamine administration reduces control by contingencies that change across sessions.

Abstract:Background Work in humans has shown that impulsivity can be advantageous in certain settings. However, evidence for so-called functional impulsivity is lacking in experimental animals. Aims This study investigated the contexts in which high impulsive (HI) rats show an advantage in performance compared with mid- (MI) and low impulsive (LI) rats. We also assessed the effects of dopaminergic and noradrenergic agents to investigate underlying neurotransmitter mechanisms. Methods We tested rats on a variable inter-trial interval (ITI) version of the 5-choice serial reaction time task (5CSRTT). Rats received systemic injections of methylphenidate (MPH, 1 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg), atomoxetine (ATO, 0.3 mg/kg and 1 mg/kg), amphetamine (AMPH, 0.2 mg/kg), the alpha-2a adrenoceptor antagonist atipamezole (ATI, 0.3 mg/kg) and the alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine (PHEN, 1 mg/kg) prior to behavioural testing. Results Unlike LI rats, HI rats exhibited superior performance, earning more reinforcers, on short ITI trials, when the task required rapid responding. MPH, AMPH and ATI improved performance on short ITI trials and increased impulsivity in long ITI trials, recapitulating the behavioural profile of HI. In contrast, ATO and PHEN impaired performance on short ITI trials and decreased impulsivity, thus mimicking the behavioural profile of LI rats. The effects of ATO were greater on MI rats and LI rats. Conclusions These findings indicate that impulsivity can be advantageous when rapid focusing and actions are required, an effect that may depend on increased dopamine neurotransmission. Conversely, activation of the noradrenergic system, with ATO and PHEN, led to a general inhibition of responding.
Dissociable Effects of D-Amphetamine, Chlordiazepoxide and Alpha-Flupenthixol on Choice and Rate Measures of Reinforcement in the Rat.

Abstract:The role of reinforcers in influencing choice was studied by use of a schedule that included a random intermixing of reinforced and explicitly non-reinforced components. The just-reinforced response had a high likelihood of being repeated (win-stay), although there was no differential reinforcement for doing so, whereas responses just followed by explicit non-reinforcement had a very low probability of repetition (lose-stay). Non-parametric indices based on the theory of signal detection were used to derive a choice measure of reinforcement which was independent of alterations in average response rate. Treatments with d-amphetamine (0.2–4.5 mg/kg), chlordiazepoxide (0.25–16 mg/kg) and α-flupenthixol (0.03–0.6 mg/kg) showed that changes in the choice measure could be dissociated from changes in the response rate. These findings were supported by extinction and satiation tests.
Stress or Drug Priming Induces Reinstatement of Extinguished Conditioned Place Preference

Abstract:To construct a model for the relapse of drug use, we investigated the reinstatement of morphine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in rats. After the morphine CPP paradigm was established, rats were left extinguishing for 9 days, then exposed to 15 min of random foot shock or s.c. drug priming with different doses of morphine or amphetamine, respectively. Foot shock or a higher dose (0.25 mg/kg) of both drugs could reinstate the CPP induced by 4 mg/kg of morphine after a 9-day extinction, while a lower dose (0.125 mg/kg) of both drugs had no effect. It is concluded that the CPP extinction-reinstatement paradigm might be used as a model to investigate the mechanism of relapse in addicts.

Abstract:Psychostimulants such as cocaine have been used as performance enhancers throughout recorded history. Although psychostimulants are commonly prescribed to improve attention and cognition, a great deal of literature has described their ability to induce cognitive deficits, as well as addiction. How can a single drug class be known to produce both cognitive enhancement and impairment? Properties of the particular stimulant drug itself and individual differences between users have both been suggested to dictate the outcome of stimulant use. A more parsimonious alternative, which we endorse, is that dose is the critical determining factor in cognitive effects of stimulant drugs. Herein, we review several popular stimulants (cocaine, amphetamine, methylphenidate, modafinil, and caffeine), outlining their history of use, mechanism of action, and use and abuse today. One common graphic depiction of the cognitive effects of psychostimulants is an inverted U-shaped dose-effect curve. Moderate arousal is beneficial to cognition, whereas too much activation leads to cognitive impairment. In parallel to this schematic, we propose a continuum of psychostimulant activation that covers the transition from one drug effect to another as stimulant intake is increased. Low doses of stimulants effect increased arousal, attention, and cognitive enhancement; moderate doses can lead to feelings of euphoria and power, as well as addiction and cognitive impairment; and very high doses lead to psychosis and circulatory collapse. This continuum helps account for the seemingly disparate effects of stimulant drugs, with the same drug being associated with cognitive enhancement and impairment.

‘Waiting Impulsivity’ in Isolation-Reared and Socially-Reared Rats: Effects of Amphetamine

Abstract:Background Rats reared in social isolation exhibit various cognitive and behavioural abnormalities in adulthood. However, impulsivity following this treatment still remains unclear, especially in response to medications used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, such as amphetamine. Methods Using an isolation-rearing (IR) manipulation, the present study examined the effects of IR on impulsive action and impulsive choice when also treated with doses of d -amphetamine, by employing the five-choice serial reaction time task (5-CSRTT) and a temporal discounting of reward task (TDRT), respectively. Results IR rats showed similar acquisition of the 5-CSRTT. Amphetamine increased premature responding in both groups; however, IR rats showed less responding overall. For the TDRT, IR rats revealed a greater preference for the large but delayed reward during task acquisition (i.e. were less impulsive) with a higher rate of nose poking during the delay, and exhibited a compressed dose-response function (i.e. reduced dose sensitivity) for amphetamine. Discussion Impulsive action and impulsive choice were reduced in IR rats under certain conditions, and a blunted response to d -amphetamine was found on these measures. These reductions in impulsivity contrast with locomotor hyperactivity normally shown in IR rats and the findings have implications for the utility of IR as a model of psychopathology.
Validation and Optimisation of a Touchscreen Progressive Ratio Test of Motivation in Male Rats

Abstract:Across species, effort-related motivation can be assessed by testing behaviour under a progressive ratio (PR) schedule of reinforcement. However, to date, PR tasks for rodents have been available using traditional operant response systems only. Touchscreen operant response systems allow the assessment of behaviour in laboratory rodents, using tasks that share high face validity with the computerised assessments used in humans. Here, we sought to optimise a rat touchscreen variant of PR and validate it by assessing the effects of a number of manipulations known to affect PR performance in non-touchscreen paradigms. Separate groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained on PR schedules with either linear (PR4) or exponential (PREXP) schedules of reinforcement. PR performance was assessed in response to manipulations in reward outcome. Animals were tested under conditions of increased reward magnitude and following reward devaluation through a prefeeding procedure. Subsequently, the effects of systemic administration of the dopamine D2/D3 receptor antagonist raclopride and the psychostimulant d-amphetamine were examined as traditional pharmacological methods for manipulating motivation. Rats reinforced under PR4 and PREXP schedules consistently showed differential patterns of response rates within sessions. Furthermore, both PR4 and PREXP schedules were sensitive to suppression by prefeeding or raclopride administration. Performance under both schedules was facilitated by increasing reward magnitude or d-amphetamine administration. Taken together, these findings mirror those observed in lever-based PR paradigms in rats. This study therefore demonstrates the successful validation of the rat touchscreen PR task. This will allow for the assessment of motivation in rats, within the same touchscreen apparatus used for the assessment of complex cognitive processes in this species.
"Paradoxical" Effects of Psychomotor Stimulant Drugs in Hyperactive Children from the Standpoint of Behavioural Pharmacology.

Abstract:Following a brief review of the effectiveness of psychomotor stimulant drugs in treating childhood hyperkinesis, the hypothesis of a "paradoxical" drug response is examined. The importance of three main factors, besides dosage, derived from consideration of studies in behavioural pharmacology. is assessed: rate-dependency; attention and stereotypy; and subjective and social effects. Rate-dependent effects of drugs in animals occur when the control rate of responding is related to the drug effect. A dose-dependent inverse relationship between control rate and drug effect is generally found within individual cases responding in operant situations, after treatment with stimulant drugs. This rate-dependency also occurs between organisms, such that those organisms with high control rates (for example, of operant behaviour, or spontaneous motor activity) show proportionately smaller increases in rate, or reductions in rate with amphetamine-like drugs. This article extends this form of analysis to hyperactive children in two populations receiving methylphenidate. In a third population, of normal adults and normal children, as well as hyperactive children, an inverse relationship between control rate of activity and the effects of 0.5 mgkg of d-amphetamine is found, accounting for about 38% of the variability. Therefore, the rate-reducing effects of psychomotor stimulants might arise in part as a consequence of the high rates of control responding in the hyperactive child, rather than from a unique "paradoxical" response. The effects of stimulants on "attention" in hyperactive children similarly might be predicted from studies on normal adults. Some evidence of an "over-focusing" of attention in hyperactive children treated with methylphenidate is presented in a test of cognitive flexibility. This lack of cognitive flexibility might be related to behavioural stereotypies found in animals and Man following stimulants. Finally, many of the subjective and social responses to stimulants in hyperactive children are not necessarily anomalous. The implications for clinical practice and for animal models of the hyperkinetic syndrome are discussed.
Take It or Leave It: Prefrontal Control in Recreational Cocaine Users

Abstract:Though stimulant drugs such as cocaine are considered highly addictive, some individuals report recreational use over long periods without developing dependence. Difficulties in response inhibition have been hypothesized to contribute to dependence, but previous studies investigating response inhibition in recreational cocaine users have reported conflicting results. Performance on a stop-signal task was examined in 24 recreational cocaine users and 32 healthy non-drug using control participants matched for age, gender and verbal intelligence during functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. The two groups were further matched on traumatic childhood histories and the absence of family histories of addiction. Results revealed that recreational cocaine users did not significantly differ from controls on any index of task performance, including response execution and stop-signal reaction time, with the latter averaging 198 ms in both groups. Functional magnetic resonance imaging analyses indicated that, compared with controls, stopping in the recreational users was associated with increased activation in the pre-supplementary motor area but not the right inferior frontal cortex. Thus, findings imply intact response inhibition abilities in recreational cocaine users, though the distinct pattern of accompanying activation suggests increased recruitment of brain areas implicated in response inhibition. This increased recruitment could be attributed to compensatory mechanisms that enable preserved cognitive control in this group, possibly relating to their hypothetical resilience to stimulant drug dependence. Such overactivation, alternatively, may be attributable to prolonged cocaine use leading to neuroplastic adaptations.

Abstract:Drug-paired conditioned reinforcers can maintain persistent instrumental responding, thus providing a model of some aspects of long-term drug addiction. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of inactivating the dorsal striatum (DStr), nucleus accumbens (NAcc) core, or NAcc shell on different types of responding, each maintained by drug-paired conditioned reinforcers. Inactivations were achieved by infusing a combination of baclofen and muscimol prior to (1) persistent responding for a drug-paired conditioned reinforcer, (2) reacquisition of this instrumental response after extinction by omission of the contingent conditioned stimulus (CS), or (3) CS (cue)-induced reinstatement of the original (and different) instrumental response that had previously delivered cocaine. Inactivation of the DStr attenuated persistent responding for a cocaine-paired conditioned reinforcer, as well as its reacquisition after extinction of this response, while the only effect of inactivation of the NAcc shell was to increase CS (cue)-induced reinstatement of the extinguished instrumental response that had previously delivered cocaine. Inactivation of the NAcc core affected all measures of responding maintained by drug-paired conditioned reinforcers. These results are discussed with reference to the neural systems involved in different aspects of responding maintained by drug-paired conditioned reinforcers.
Differential Effects of Intra-Accumbens and Systemic Amphetamine on Latent Inhibition Using an On-Baseline, Within-Subject Conditioned Suppression Paradigm

Abstract:Latent inhibition (LI) is a phenomenon in which repeated, non-reinforced presentation of a stimulus retards subsequent conditioning to that stimulus. Several recent experiments have suggested that LI is abolished following acute, low doses of amphetamine given during pre-exposure and conditioning, and this effect has been attributed to amphetamine-induced changes in dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the effects of two doses of intra-accumbensd-amphetamine (10 µg/µl and 3 µg/µl) on LI in an on-baseline, within-subject conditioned suppression paradigm. There was no effect of either dose on LI, but a significant disinhibition of conditioned suppression resulted in a retardation of learning. In experiment 3 the effects of a low dose of systemicd-amphetamine (0.5 mg/kg) on latent inhibition were examined. The results replicated the abolition of LI found in previous studies, and demonstrated enhanced post-shock suppression in amphetamine-treated animals. These data provide no evidence for the involvement of the mesolimbic dopamine system in LI.
Contextual and psychosocial factors influencing drug reward in humans: The importance of non-drug reinforcement

Abstract:The reinforcing efficacy, or behavior-strengthening effect, of a substance is a critical determinant of substance use typically quantified by measuring behavioral allocation to the substance under schedules of reinforcement with escalating response requirements. Although responses on these tasks are often used to indicate stable reinforcing effects or trait-level abuse potential for an individual, task designs often demonstrate within-person variability across varying degrees of a constraint within experimental procedures. As a result, quantifying behavioral allocation is an effective approach for measuring the impact of contextual and psychosocial factors on substance reward. We review studies using laboratory self-administration, behavioral economic purchase tasks, and ambulatory assessments to quantify the impact of various contextual and psychosocial factors on behavioral allocation toward consumption of a substance. We selected these assessment approaches because they cover the translational spectrum from experimental control to ecological relevance, with consistent support across these approaches representing greater confidence in the effect. Conceptually, we organized factors that influence substance value into two broad categories: factors that influence the cost/benefit ratio of the substance (social context, stress and affect, cue exposure), and factors that influence the cost/benefit ratio of an alternative (alternative non-drug reinforcers, alternative drug reinforcers, and opportunity costs). We conclude with an overview of future research directions and considerations for clinical application.
Enhanced Risky Choice in Male Rats Elicited by the Acute Pharmacological Stressor Yohimbine Involves Prefrontal Dopamine D1 Receptor Activation

Abstract:BackgroundAcute stress alters risk-based decision-making; however, the underlying neural and neurochemical substrates are underexplored. Given their well-documented stress-inducing effects in humans and laboratory animals, glucocorticoids such as cortisol and corticosterone and the α 2 -adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine represent potent pharmacological tools to mimic some characteristics of acute stress.MethodsHere, we analyzed the effects of the pharmacological stressors corticosterone and yohimbine given systemically on risk-based decision-making in male rats. Moreover, we investigated whether pharmacological stressor effects on risk-based decision-making involve dopamine D1 receptor stimulation in the dorsal prelimbic cortex (PL). We used a risk discounting task that requires choosing between a certain/small reward lever that always delivered 1 pellet and a risky/large reward lever that delivered 4 pellets with a decreasing probability across subsequent trials.ResultsSystemic administration of yohimbine increased the preference for the risky/large reward lever. By contrast, systemic single administration of corticosterone did not significantly promote risky choice. Moreover, co-administration of corticosterone did not enhance the effects of yohimbine on risky choice. The data further show that the increased preference for the risky/large reward lever under systemic yohimbine was lowered by a concurrent pharmacological blockade of dopamine D1 receptors in the PL.ConclusionsOur rodent data provide causal evidence that stimulation of PL D1 receptors may represent a neurochemical mechanism by which the acute pharmacological stressor yohimbine, and possibly nonpharmacological stressors as well, promote risky choice.
