Abstract:For any subcritical index of regularity s > 3/2, we prove the almost global well posedness for the 2-dimensional semilinear wave equation with the cubic nonlinearity in the derivatives, when the initial data are small in the Sobolev space H s × H s−1 with certain angular regularity. The lifespan is known to be sharp in general. The main new ingredient in the proof is an endpoint version of the generalized Strichartz estimates in the space . In the last section, we also consider the general semilinear wave equations with the spatial dimension n ≥ 2 and the order of nonlinearity p ≥ 3.

Abstract:We are interested in coupled semi-linear wave equations satisfying the null condition in two space dimensions, a basic model in nonlinear wave equations. Our aim is to establish global existence of smooth solutions to this system with large initial data of short pulse type. Major difficulties arise due to the largeness of initial data and the slow decay nature of 2D wave equations. To overcome the difficulties, by careful examination of the local solutions, we adapt various vector-field methods to different spacetime regions with several novel weighted energy estimates.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the semilinear wave equations with the inverse-square potential. By transferring the original equation to a "fractional dimensional" wave equation and analyzing the properties of its fundamental solution, we establish a long-time existence result, for sufficiently small, spherically symmetric initial data. Together with the previously known blow-up result, we determine the critical exponent which divides the global existence and finite time blow-up. Moreover, the sharp lower bounds of the lifespan are obtained, except for certain borderline case. In addition, our technology allows us to handle an extreme case for the potential, which has hardly been discussed in literature.

Abstract:In this note, we study the Cauchy problem of the semilinear damped wave equation and our aim is the small data global existence for noncompactly supported initial data. For this problem, Ikehata and Tanizawa [5] introduced the energy method with the exponential-type weight function $e^{|x|^2/(1+t)}$, which is the so-called Ikehata--Todorova--Yordanov type weight. In this note, we suggest another weight function of the form $(1+|x|^2/(1+t))^{\lambda}$, which allows us to treat polynomially decaying initial data and give a simpler proof than the previous studies treating such initial data.

Abstract:Abstract This paper proposes an energy-based discontinuous Galerkin scheme for fourth-order semilinear wave equations, which we rewrite as a system of second-order spatial derivatives. Compared to the local discontinuous Galerkin methods, the proposed scheme uses fewer auxiliary variables and is more computationally efficient. We prove several properties of the scheme. For example, we show that the scheme is unconditionally stable and that it achieves optimal convergence in $L^2$ norm for both the solution and the auxiliary variables without imposing penalty terms. A key part of the proof of the stability and convergence analysis is the special choice of the test function for the auxiliary equation involving the time derivative of the displacement variable, which leads to a linear system for the time evolution of the unknowns. Then we can use standard mathematical techniques in discontinuous Galerkin methods to obtain stability and optimal error estimates. We also obtain energy dissipation and/or conservation of the scheme by choosing simple and mesh-independent interelement fluxes. Several numerical experiments are presented to illustrate and support our theoretical results.

Local wellposedness for the quasilinear Schrödinger equations via the generalized energy method

Abstract:We study the global Cauchy problem of the quasilinear Schrödinger equations, for which KENIG et al. (Invent Math, 2004; Adv Math, 2006) obtained short time local wellposedness with large data by pseudo-differential techniques and viscosity methods, while MARZUOLA et al. (Adv Math, 2012; Kyoto J Math, 2014; Arch Ration Mech Anal, 2021) improved the results by dispersive arguments. In this paper, we introduce the generalized energy method that can close the bounds by combining momentum and energy estimates and derive the results by viscosity methods. The whole arguments basically only involve integration by parts and Sobolev embedding inequalities, just like the classical local existence theorem for semilinear Schrödinger equations. For quadratic interaction problem with small data, we derive low regularity local wellposedness in the same function spaces as in the works of Kenig et al. For cubic interaction problem, we obtain the same low regularity results as in Marzuola et al. (Kyoto J Math, 2014).

Abstract:In this paper, an energy-conservation scheme is derived and analysed for solving Hamiltonian wave equations subject to Neumann boundary conditions in two dimensions. The energy-conservation scheme is based on the blend of spatial discretisation by a fourth-order finite difference method and time integration by the Average Vector Field (AVF) approach. The spatial discretisation via the fourth-order finite difference leads to a particular Hamiltonian system of second-order ordinary differential equations. The conservative law of the discrete energy is established, and the stability and convergence of the semi-discrete scheme are analysed. For the time discretisation, the corresponding AVF formula is derived and applied to the particular Hamlitonian ODEs to yield an efficient energy-conservation scheme. The numerical simulation is implemented for various cases including a linear wave equation and two nonlinear sine-Gordon equations. The numerical results demonstrate the spatial accuracy and the remarkable energy-conservation behaviour of the proposed energy-conservation scheme in this paper.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the proof of microlocal partition of energy for fractional-type dispersive equations including Schrödinger equation, linearized gravity or capillary water-wave equation and half-Klein-Gordon equation. Roughly speaking, a quarter of the $L^2$ energy lies inside or outside the "light cone" $|x| = |tP'(\xi)|$ for large time. In addition, based on the study of half-Klein-Gordon equation, the microlocal partition of energy will also be proved for Klein-Gordon equation.

Abstract:We study semilinear damped wave equations with power nonlinearity and initial data belonging to Sobolev spaces of negative order . In the present paper, we obtain a new critical exponent for some and low dimensions in the framework of Sobolev spaces of negative order. Precisely, global (in time) existence of small data Sobolev solutions of lower regularity is proved for , and blow-up of weak solutions in finite time even for small data if $1<p<p_{\textrm{crit}}(n,\gamma )$ . Furthermore, in order to more accurately describe the blow-up time, we investigate sharp upper bound and lower bound estimates for the lifespan in the subcritical case.</p

Abstract:It is well-known that in dimensions at least three semilinear wave equations with null conditions admit global solutions for small initial data. It is also known that in dimension two such result still holds for a certain class of quasi-linear wave equations with null conditions. The proofs are based on the decay mechanism of linear waves. However, in one dimension, waves do not decay. Nevertheless, we will prove that small data still lead to global solutions if the null condition is satisfied.

Abstract:We investigate the initial value problem for a defocusing semi-linear wave equation with spatially growing nonlinearity. Our analysis leads to global well-posedness in the energy space. Furthermore, we obtain the linearization of energy-bounded solutions using the methodology outlined in [8]. The proof hinges on Moser-Trudinger type inequalities and Strichartz estimates.

Abstract:This paper studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work \cite{Ch-08} on formation of black-holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.
