Abstract:Modern SAT solvers have experienced a remarkable progress on solving industrial instances. Most of the techniques have been developed after an intensive experimental process. It is believed that these techniques exploit the underlying structure of industrial instances. However, there are few works trying to exactly characterize the main features of this structure. The research community on complex networks has developed techniques of analysis and algorithms to study real-world graphs that can be used by the SAT community. Recently, there have been some attempts to analyze the structure of industrial SAT instances in terms of complex networks, with the aim of explaining the success of SAT solving techniques, and possibly improving them. In this paper, inspired by the results on complex networks, we study the community structure, or modularity, of industrial SAT instances. In a graph with clear community structure, or high modularity, we can find a partition of its nodes into communities such that most edges connect variables of the same community. In our analysis, we represent SAT instances as graphs, and we show that most application benchmarks are characterized by a high modularity. On the contrary, random SAT instances are closer to the classical Erdös-Rényi random graph model, where no structure can be observed. We also analyze how this structure evolves by the effects of the execution of a CDCL SAT solver. In particular, we use the community structure to detect that new clauses learned by the solver during the search contribute to destroy the original structure of the formula. This is, learned clauses tend to contain variables of distinct communities.

Constraints partitioning for RTL Satis ability solving by YICES

Abstract:This paper presents a hypergraph partitioning based constraints decomposition procedure to guide an RTL satisfiability solver. The constraints with their correlative variables drawn from the RTL circuit are modeled as a hypergraph and techniques based on hypergraph partitioning are employed to decompose constraints. This scheme solves the partitioned problems respectively and reconciles them via cut-set variables, which has led to pruning of the search space and results in solving the satisfiability problem efficiently. Comparison with the original SMT solver YICES shows that the procedure is fast and can significantly increase the performance of the RTL SAT engine.

Abstract:When creating benchmarks for SAT solvers, we need SAT instances that are easy to build but hard to solve. A recent development in the search for such methods has led to the Balanced SAT algorithm, which can create k-SAT instances with m clauses of high difficulty, for arbitrary k and m. In this paper we introduce the No-Triangle SAT algorithm, a SAT instance generator based on the cluster coefficient graph statistic. We empirically compare the two algorithms by fixing the arity and the number of variables, but varying the number of clauses. The hardest instances that we find are produced by No-Triangle SAT. Furthermore, difficult instances from No-Triangle SAT have a different number of clauses than difficult instances from Balanced SAT, potentially allowing a combination of the two methods to find hard SAT instances for a larger array of parameters.

Abstract:A clustering and partition based Boolean satisfiability solving method is proposed. By partitioning a CNF formula into several clause groups, satisfiability solving problem can be divided into small ones, so the complexity of the problem can be reduced. On the other hand, the satisfiability of different clause groups can be solved in parallel, the decision procedure can be speeded up further. For the formula that cannot generate clause group partition directly, a clustering algorithm is given to clustering clauses into clusters. Then clause group partition can be generated by eliminating common variables among clusters. Further, a method based on minimum cut of undirected graph is given to make partition practical. Preliminary experiments shows that the common variables set among clusters is small for many SAT problems, and our approach can significantly increase the performance of SAT solving.

Abstract:From the SAT physical model, a physical hypothesis named PHHY is proposed. By PHHY, it is proved that there is a universally efficient algorithm for solving SAT problem. Then, by square packing problem, the authors show that there are interesting industrial NP-complete problems which can be solved through SAT algorithms, but each way of solving like this will be much worse than that of a certain direct solving.

Abstract:SAT problem has been an active research subject and many impressive SAT solvers have been proposed. Most of algorithms used in modern SAT solvers are based on tree structured searching strategy, combining with heuristic approaches to reduce the search space. In contrast to most existing solvers, we treat SAT problem as a logical optimization issue which can be solved by a logic minimizer. In this paper, we propose a Folding Strategy (FS) based on the Shannon's expansion theorem such that in every step, one variable is deducted and the size of search space is shrunk. The new method will find the solution after Karnaugh Map (K-Map) is folded no more than n (number of variables) times because search space is decreased by half in each folding step.
SatIn: Hardware for Boolean Satisfiability Inference

Abstract:This paper describes SatIn, a hardware accelerator for determining boolean satisfiability (SAT) -- an important problem in many domains including verification, security analysis, and planning. SatIn is based on a distributed associative array which performs short, atomic operations that can be composed into high level operations. To overcome scaling limitations imposed by wire delay, we extended the algorithms used in software solvers to function efficiently on a distributed set of nodes communicating with message passing. A cycle-level simulation on real benchmarks shows that SatIn achieves an average 72x speedup against Glucose, the winner of 2016 SAT competition, with the potential to achieve a 113x speedup using two contexts. To quantify SatIn's physical requirements, we placed and routed a single clause using the Synopsys 32nm} educational development kit. We were able to meet a 1ns cycle constraint with our target clause fitting in 4867um^2 and consuming 63.8uW of dynamic power; with a network, this corresponds to 100k clauses consuming 8.3W of dynamic power (not including leakage or global clock power) in a 500mm^2 32nm chip.

Abstract:We designed and implemented an efficient tough random symmetric 3-SAT generator and propose two deterministic algorithms that efficiently generate 3-SAT instances with a unique solution. We quantify the first algorithms hardness in terms of CPU time, numbers of restarts, decisions, propagations, conflicts and conflicted literals that occur when a solver tries to solve 3-SAT instances. In this experiment, the clause variable ratio was chosen to be around the conventional critical phase transition number 4.24. The experiment shows that instances generated by our generator are significantly harder than instances generated by the Tough K-SAT generator. The two deterministic algorithms generate 3-SAT instances with the number of clauses scaling as 4n, where n is the number of variables, and (n+6), respectively. By combining these two algorithms along with a simple padding algorithm, we prove a hybrid algorithm that can generate n-variable instances with the number of clauses that scale between (n+6) and 7n(n-1)(n-2). Overall, all proposed SAT generators seek to explore unique difficult to solve SAT problems.
Where the Really Hard Quadratic Assignment Problems Are: the QAP-SAT instances

Abstract:The Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) is one of the major domains in the field of evolutionary computation, and more widely in combinatorial optimization. This paper studies the phase transition of the QAP, which can be described as a dramatic change in the problem's computational complexity and satisfiability, within a narrow range of the problem parameters. To approach this phenomenon, we introduce a new QAP-SAT design of the initial problem based on submodularity to capture its difficulty with new features. This decomposition is studied experimentally using branch-and-bound and tabu search solvers. A phase transition parameter is then proposed. The critical parameter of phase transition satisfaction and that of the solving effort are shown to be highly correlated for tabu search, thus allowing the prediction of difficult instances.

A Divide and Conquer Approach to All Solutions Satisfiability Problem

Abstract:SAT, is one of the fundamental topics in computer science, which has a long history in AI. As a variant of SAT, the all solutions satisfiability problem(AllSAT) is widely used in the field of electronic design automation. It is to generate all or part solutions of a given SAT instance. The computational complexity of AllSAT is higher than general SAT, which leads to less research related and poor performance of existing AllSAT solvers. In this paper, we propose to solve AllSAT by a divide-and-conquer-based approach called DIV2, which solve more instances within the time limit. Besides, we present a segmentation strategy for DIV2, called Jaccard similarity segmentation, which improves the efficiency of DIV2. The experimental result shows that the method proposed in this paper, has a better performance than the state-of-the-art algorithms, with regarding to the number of instances solved and the total number of solutions found for SAT 2014 competition benchmark.
SATbed: A Configurable Environment for Reliable Performance Experiments with SAT Instance Classes and Algorithms

Abstract:Analysis of our recent experiments for a group of SAT solvers and several classes of problem instances suggests a common mathemat- ical framework with experiments in component reliability. In the latter, we observe the distribution of component lifetime; in the former, we observe the distribution of execution time (runtime). A lifetime distri- bution for hardware components is frequently found to have an expo- nential, Weibull, Pareto, or gamma distribution. Our experiments with state-of-the-art SAT solvers reveal normal distributions and exponential distributions of runtime and other related random variables, as well as other distributions commonly observed in reliability applications. SATbed, an experimental testbed for SAT solvers, emulates the reli- ability framework: equivalence classes of isomorphic problem instances (replicated hardware components), subjected to tests with specific SAT solvers (specifically controlled environments), observations of runtime, implications, etc. (lifetime), statistical analysis and modeling, based on random variable samples. The testbed not only facilitates systematic study and reliable improvement of any SAT solver but also supports the introduction and validation of new problem instance classes.

Abstract:This paper presents a heuristic polarity decision-making algorithm for solving Boolean satisfiability (SAT). The algorithm inherits many features of the current state-of-the-art SAT solvers, such as fast BCP, clause recording, restarts, etc. In addition, a preconditioning step that calculates the polarities of variables according to the cover distribution of Karnaugh map is introduced into DPLL procedure, which greatly reduces the number of conflicts in the search process. The proposed approach is implemented as a SAT solver named DiffSat. Experiments show that DiffSat can solve many “real-life” instances in a reasonable time while the best existing SAT solvers, such as Zchaff and MiniSat, cannot. In particular, DiffSat can solve every instance of Bart benchmark suite in less than 0.03 s while Zchaff and MiniSat fail under a 900 s time limit. Furthermore, DiffSat even outperforms the outstanding incomplete algorithm DLM in some instances.

Abstract:Most of the verification tools in industry today are hard to fit for the rapid increase of the sizes of integrated circuits. In this paper, a layered verification using SMT solvers through hypergraph partitioning based constraint decomposition is proposed, which is provided for formal verification of the satisfiability of RTL circuit. In this method, after modeling structural constraints of the RTL circuit and its correlative variables as a hypergraph model with appropriate weights, a hypergraph partitioning based constraints decomposition procedure is used to find a proper balanced bi-partitioning with min-cut, in order to accomplish bounded model checking more efficiently for the RTL circuit. The experimental results show the efficiency for pruning of the search space and in solving the satisfiability problem.
An Improved Algorithm for Sparse Instances of SAT

Abstract:We show that the CNF satisfiability problem (SAT) can be solved in time $O^*(1.1199^{(d-2)n})$, where $d$ is either the maximum number of occurrences of any variable or the average number of occurrences of all variables if no variable occurs only once. This improves upon the known upper bound of $O^*(1.1279^{(d-2)n})$ by Wahlstr$\ddot{\text{o}}$m (SAT 2005) and $O^*(1.1238^{(d-2)n})$ by Peng and Xiao (IJCAI 2023). For $d\leq 4$, our algorithm is better than previous results. Our main technical result is an algorithm that runs in $O^*(1.1199^n)$ for 3-occur-SAT, a restricted instance of SAT where all variables have at most 3 occurrences. Through deeper case analysis and a reduction rule that allows us to resolve many variables under a relatively broad criteria, we are able to circumvent the bottlenecks in previous algorithms.

Abstract:Satisfiability (SAT) and integer linear programming (ILP) are two related NP-complete problems. They both have a lot of important applications. We study the effectiveness of using them as a complementary tool to each other. We propose three different ILP formulations to solve SAT and compare them with state-of-the-art SAT solvers Berkmin and zchaff. On the other hand, we give two methods to solve ILP by using SAT solvers. In both cases, we achieve speed-ups of several orders for most of our tested examples.

Abstract:Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP) are notoriously hard. Consequently, powerful decomposition methods have been developed to overcome this complexity. However, this poses the challenge of actually computing such a decomposition for a given CSP instance, and previous algorithms have shown their limitations in doing so. In this paper, we present a number of key algorithmic improvements and parallelisation techniques to compute so-called Generalized Hypertree Decompositions (GHDs) faster. We thus advance the ability to compute optimal (i.e., minimal-width) GHDs for a significantly wider range of CSP instances on modern machines. This lays the foundation for more systems and applications in evaluating CSPs and related problems (such as Conjunctive Query answering) based on their structural properties.

Abstract:Graph partitioning, or community detection, is the cornerstone of many fields, such as logistics, transportation and smart power grids. Efficient computation and efficacious evaluation of communities are both essential, especially in commercial and industrial settings. However, the solution space of graph partitioning increases drastically with the number of vertices and subgroups. With an eye to solving large scale graph partitioning and other optimization problems within a short period of time, the Digital Annealer (DA), a specialized CMOS hardware also featuring improved algorithms, has been devised by Fujitsu Ltd. This study gauges Fujitsu DA's performance and running times. The modularity was implemented as both the objective function and metric for the solutions. The graph partitioning problems were formatted into Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) structures so that they could be adequately imported into the DA. The DA yielded the highest modularity among other studies when partitioning Karate Club, Les Miserables, American Football, and Dolphin. Moreover, the DA was able to partition the Case 1354pegase power grid network into 45 subgroups, calling for 60,930 binary variables, whilst delivering optimal modularity results within a solving time of roughly 80 seconds. Our results suggest that the Fujitsu DA can be applied for rapid and efficient optimization for graph partitioning.

Parallelizing SMT Solving: Lazy Decomposition and Conciliation

Abstract:Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) is the satisfiability problem for first-order formulae with respect to background theories. SMT extends the propositional satisfiability by introducing various underlying theories. To improve the efficiency of SMT solving, many efforts have been made on low-level algorithms but they generally cannot leverage the capability of parallel hardware. We propose a high-level and flexible framework, namely lazy decomposition and conciliation (LDC), to parallelize solving for quantifier-free SMT problems. Overall, a SMT problem is firstly decomposed into subproblems, then local reasoning inside each subproblem is conciliated with the global reasoning over the shared symbols across subproblems in parallel. LDC can be built on any existing solver without tuning its internal implementation, and is flexible as it is applicable to various underlying theories. We instantiate LDC in the theory of equality with uninterpreted functions, and implement a parallel solver PZ3 based on Z3. Experiment results on the QF_UF benchmarks from SMT-LIB as well as random problems show the potential of LDC, as (1) PZ3 generally outperforms Z3 in 4 out of 8 problem subcategories under various core configurations; (2) PZ3 usually achieves super-linear speed-up over Z3 on problems with sparse structures, which makes it possible to choose an appropriate solver from Z3 and PZ3 in advance according to the structure of input problem; (3) compared to PCVC4, a state-of-the-art portfolio-based parallel SMT solver, PZ3 achieves speed-up on a larger portion of problems and has better overall speed-up ratio.
MixSATGen: Learning Graph Mixing for SAT Instance Generation

Abstract:The Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT) stands as a canonical NP-complete task. In particular, the scarcity of real-world SAT instances and their usefulness for tuning SAT solvers underscore the necessity for effective and efficient ways of hard instance generation, whereas existing methods either struggle to maintain plausible hardness or suffer from limited applicability. Different from the typical construction-based methods, this paper introduces an adaptive and efficient graph interpolation approach that in place modifies the raw structure of graph-represented SAT instance by replacing it with a counterpart from another instance. Specifically, it involves a two-stage matching and mixing pipeline. The matching aims to find a correspondence map of literal nodes from two instance graphs via learned features from a matching network; while the mixing stage involves iteratively exchanging clause pairs with the highest correspondence scores until a specified replacement ratio is achieved. We further show that under our matching-mixing framework, moderate randomness can avoid hardness degradation of instances by introducing Gumbel noise. Experimental results show the superiority of our method with both resemblance in structure and hardness, and general applicability.
