Abstract:With the US as an example,this paper demonstrates that the de-urbanization is essentially suburbanization from the aspects of urbanization process,spatial distribution of population,and the evolution of urban form.

Abstract:Suburbanization is one of the most important features of modern metropolian areas.Over the last several decades,global cities are facing remarkable decentralization of population and employment from central cities towards outer suburbs,which has significant influence on urban spatial restructuring.In the 1990s,the conception of "New Suburbanization" was put forward,which established the relationship between suburbanization and the development of the edge cities and urban polycentric spatial structure of employment.In recent years,with the outward expansion and growing economic and social complexity of suburbs,suburbanization is recognized and accepted by more and more people.Since the 21st century,social space has become the hottest topic in the west.The complexity of the social structure and suburban social space has caused more and more attention along with the rapid development of the suburbs.Urban socio-spatial structure in the suburbs has been analyzed,concerning about the transition of the residential circumstance and social relationship in the suburbs.Base on the newest researches on suburbanization in the western countries recently,the author summarizes the achievement of western suburbanization research from the prospective of social space,covering several fields such as the restructuration of the residential space,the housing option and residential differentiation,the commuting behavior and the social influences of suburbanization and so on.Then the author submits the inspiration for the suburbanization study in China by analyzing the transition of the western researches and the innovation of the research methods.Finally,the author puts forward new orientations on prospect of the future suburbanization study in China from four aspects.

Abstract:Suburbanization is a stage of urbanization provess. The author discesses the situation of Beijing from the data of three population censuses(1964, 1982, 1990) and considers that the suburbanization in Beijing has been in process since 1982. During 1982–1990, population of all districts of the inner city lost 82 000 persons and in fact the permanent residents holding the household registration lost 144 000, which is about 6.12% of permanent residents in the inner city. Like the West, suburbanization in China also happened against the macro backgrounds of improvements of transportation and loving conditions, growth of urban population moving from rural areas. But in the case of the forces that make decentralization possible, China is different from the western countries. In China, the levels of economy and urbanization are rather low, the real middle class is not rich; only very few Chinese families own provate cars, and the inner cities still have great attraction to Chinese people. The author considers three causes of decentralization: (1) reform of urban land use system brings about migration from the core area; (2) construction of a large number of city roads reinforces this process; (3) reforms of housing system and renovation of dilapidated houses encourage outward movement. However, the process wasn’t of spontaneity of any individual but of the leadership of government and “Dan Wei” (Work Unit).

Abstract:As in other countries, suburbanization in China occurred after the cities had experienced a period of sustained industrial and population growth. This study examines suburbanization in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Dalian. As a result of economic restructuring, the urban core registered net population loss from 1982 to 1990 because of decentralization while the inner suburbs gained population. Among the forces driving suburbanization were marketization of urban land, the shift of industrial land to tertiary use, transportation improvement, the availability of foreign and domestic capital, housing rehabilitation in the city, and new housing construction in the suburbs. There were certain similarities but major differences between American and Chinese suburbanization. Unlike the current metropolitan landscape in the United States where suburban growth has given rise to a polycentric spatial structure, suburbanization in China is still at the incipient stage of development with suburbs dominated by central cities. The role of the state in China has been more direct and powerful in setting the suburbanization process in motion.

Abstract:America is taken as an example and,it is proved that target population can not define suburbanization.It is pointed out that suburbanization is dispersion of urban function from central city to suburb.Urban function includes residence,industry and so on.Target population reflects and only partially reflects urban function.Furthermore,this method takes people as a single number and ignores different urban functions.Through the analysis,it is pointed out that only by founding a scientific statistical standards of urban places and urban method which could evaluate the city's function can it be defined why urbanization lies in the developing stage of suburbanization.

Abstract:Suburban residential development is one of the most prevailing urban phenomena in Chinese cities, where it occurs in a very different context from the West. However, research has seldom assessed suburban residential development in blocks, especially based on parcel-level land use data and site-specific land leasing data. This paper attempted to address this critical gap through analyzing residential land development of a case city, Hangzhou, in the era of land market reform since 2000. The major spatial determinants of development were identified through Logit models on the scales of timing, density, and intensity. The results indicated that Hangzhou has formed a fragmented and dispersed pattern in the suburbs, characterized by large-scale development and a relatively low floor area ratio. It was found that travel time to the central business district, distance to urban arteries, distance to schools and colleges, distance to the Qiantang River, percentage of industrial land and residential land, and surrounding land transactions impacted suburban residential development. These variables had different impacts on the timing, density, and intensity of suburban residential development. In particular, residential development was encouraged in suburbs despite the lack of adequate public facilities. The results call for policy and planning that can better manage suburban residential development in Hangzhou. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:China's rapid urbanization has resulted in substantial suburbanization over recent decades. However, limited research has been conducted into how land-based capital is mobilized, accumulated and circulated within the circuits of the capital accumulation process, or how land-based capital is used to finance massive investment in suburbanization by China's local governments, especially since the trend in land commodification during the 2000s. We examined the capital switching experience in the city of Hangzhou and our findings indicate that local governments have attempted to simultaneously strength-en housing development and industrial growth. In contrast to experiences of sub-urbanization in Western countries, a real estate boom during the early days of sub-urbanization in Hangzhou was not necessarily the result of diversion of excess capital from over-accumulated investments in the manufacturing industry. Rather, it was a consequence of capital accumulation facilitated by land-reserve systems and land-based financing of infrastructure orchestrated by local government. Local governments and their affiliated land-reserve centers and local investment platforms have acted as entrepreneurs by using profits from suburban property development to subsidize industrial investments and fund the infrastructure-supported expansion of outer suburbs. These findings highlight the potential risks of land-centered accumulation and provide important reflections upon the theory of David Harvey in the context of urban China.

Abstract:Peri-urbanization in China is an example of incomplete urbanization. This paper pays special attention to China's peri-urban areas.The paper analyzes the background,current situation,advantages and disadvantages of incomplete urbanization for people living in peri-urban areas.It goes on to discuss the features of peri-urban areas,the driving forces,contributions and negative effects on China's urbanization process.The paper argues that incomplete urbanization and peri-urbanization are unsustainable due to many existing problems intrinsic to China's institutional constraints.In the end,the paper proposes building new systems, that integrated land use,social security,hukou control,education and industrial development. These coordinated efforts are expected to lead to complete urbanization.

Abstract:Urban sprawl is a world phenomenon which has drawn the scholars' attention in China.This article starts with reviewing the definitions,characteristics, measurements,mechanisms and strategies of urban sprawl at home and abroad. Then,it attempts to give comprehensive assessments on the above works.Results show that:①existing researches in China mainly focused on the descriptive analysis, and lack of quantitative analysis;②studies in the West are diverse,but are so scattered that need to be integrated;③cities in China and in the western countries have many differences in many aspects,so Chinese studies about urban sprawl must consider the actual situation of our country;④domestic evaluations always used some indices to measure the effects of policies but couldn't combine it with GIS graphs ideally,therefore,it is needed to utilize western methods as a reference to rich our studies.

Abstract:Polycentric urban development has become the buzzword among urban scholars, decision-makers, and planners around the world. From the existing polycentric urban research, a functional approach is increasingly concerned by scholars except for morphological terms. Functional linkages are investigated among the (sub)centers of a polycentric urban system (PUS). However, the (sub)centers are usually pre-defined by a city master plan or identified by a density-sliced approach. However, the definition of the (sub)centers is still dependent on the morphological dimensions rather than functional linkages. To fill the gaps, we proposed a flow-based solution for delineating functional urban regions (FURs). We first built a spatially-embedded network of the entire city within extensive travel flows and then used a community detection method to reveal FURs. The characteristics of the whole PUS and the properties of each FUR are further assessed using complex network analysis. Based on the taxi trajectories of Shanghai, this study shows that the subdivisions of FURs are not necessarily consistent with administrative divisions. The functional linkages are strong among the (sub)centers surrounding the main center, and they are relatively weak among the newly established (sub)centers in the periphery. These findings call for policy interventions to increase the functional linkages of (sub)centers.

Abstract:Rather than seeing Chinese “suburbs” as following and replicating the process ofmiddle-class suburbanization in the Western economies, in keeping with the focus of this section on “emergingmodalities” in the Global South, we investigates the question of governance in China’s suburbanization process. The paper first adopts a historical perspective, viewing Chinese suburbs in terms of the various political-economic stages they have gone through. It then discusses variousmodalities of contemporary suburban governance. This is followed by an analysis of different types of development – both formal and informal – and their respective spatial forms and governance issues. While fragmented spatial forms in the suburbs represent different combinations ofmodalities, a ’coherent logic’ of territorial development is underlying these forms.

The results include: Because of their location, prospecting developmental atmosphere and all right residential environment, Development Zones have been an important carrier of suburbanization, and they promote the long-distance and spatial differentiation of suburbanization. Therefore, under the background of suburbanization, we should make the development of Development Zone in confortuity with the city. Abstract:Suburbanization of urban function and population has been accelerated in the peak time of urbanization since the last decade in China.In its unique urban administration framework,how suburbanization influences urban restructuring and rural development needs to be re-examined.Using the statistical data of urban housing and population in Shanghai,this paper aims at analyzing the characteristics of functional redistribution in the process of suburbanization and illustrating its influences on rural development and urban structural transformation.It highlights the main constraints of and discusses the approaches for facilitating rural development and a balanced urban structural formation by strengthening land development management,upgrading rural infrastructure,and facilitating the redistribution of commercial and office facilities in the suburban area.

Abstract:This study focuses on the suburbanization and subcentering of population and examines the nature of spatial restructuring in terms of the population distribution in the Beijing metropolitan area. Instead of the classic density function approach, we employ the nonparametric analysis to characterize the spatial pattern of population densities in the Beijing metropolitan area and identify the suburban subcenters. Our findings suggest that the population has spread with rapid urban growth in the Beijing metropolitan area, and the compact urban form has been replaced by a more dispersed polycentric spatial distribution. However, compared with the decentralization of western cities, the spatial extent of the decentralization of population in the Beijing metropolitan area is quite limited. The rapid growth of population in the near suburbs has expedited the sprawl of the central city, with a larger central agglomeration of population dominating the metropolitan area. In this sense, the spatial pattern of the Beijing metropolitan area is still characterized by the continuous compactness. However, our findings do provide the evidence that the city has been turning to a polycentric structure. We find significant population subcenters have emerged in the suburbs of Beijing since the 1980s. But the polycentricity emerged in the Beijing metropolitan area is very different by nature from that observed in Western cities. The subcenters emerged are adherent to the development scheme planned for the city, so it can be referred to as the so called’ planned polycentricity’.

Abstract:Accompanied by higher levels of car ownership, suburbanisation in Western countries has a significant impact on motorised travel and long-distance trips. Chinese cities share some of the suburbanisation trends and patterns of the United States as well as an increasing number of cars, while there are still great contextual variations. Through a comparative study of activity space in two inner suburban areas with different built environments, Beijing in China and Chicago in the US, this paper examines how suburbanisation influences individuals' activity-travel behaviour. The results indicate that changing urban form has a significant impact on activity space. However, the determinants of activity space in Beijing are quite different from those in Chicago. In Beijing, increasing car ownership leads to more differentiation among suburban residents. In Chicago, encouraging high-density land use patterns may lead to more localised activity space.

Abstract:The past decades of years has witnessed a significant urban construction and spatial development of Beijing City.Population quality and living standards are rising,and there is a growing trend towards the suburbanization and restructuring of residential space.Intra-urban migration,one of the important topics of Urban Geography,is a main feature of urban spatial restructuring.From the perspective of social institutional change and individual attributes,this paper analyzes the incentives and changes of residential migration with the emerging of housing market.Quite different from traditional research,qualitative research method is emphasized here.The authors did many interviews of suburban residents at Huilongguan community about their intra-urban migration in Beijing to dig into in-depth driving forces of their migration behavior.The authors find that there are four different types of intra-urban migration forms among Beijing suburban residents including those with their inner-city-houses torn down,those who have experienced the institutional transformation,local born young residents and young people from outside Beijing.After analyzing the feature of each type,the authors then conclude the restructuring characteristics of Beijing suburban residents' intra-urban migration behavior in terms of housing mobility opportunities,residents' ability of getting those chances,residents' housing needs and their decision-making.It is also releated that the improvement of housing market policies,has enhanced the financial capacity of common residents to purchase the house and established more diversified supply structure to meet the needs of different social classes.
