Abstract:The degree of complexity and, to a somewhat lesser degree, realism in simulations has advanced rapidly in the past few years. The simplest approach - modeling a cluster as collisionless dark matter and collisonal, non--radiative gas is now fairly well established. One of the most fruitful results of this approach is the {\sl morphology--cosmology connection} for X-ray clusters. Simulations have provided the means to make concrete predictions for the X-ray morphologies of clusters in cosmologies with different $\Omega_o$, with the result that low $\Omega_o$ cosmologies fair rather poorly when compared to observations. Another result concerns the accuracy of \xray binding mass estimates. The standard, hydrostatic, isothermal model estimator is found to be accurate to typically better than $50\%$ at radii where the density contrast is between $10^2$ and $10^3$. More complicated approaches, which attempt to explicitly follow galaxy formation within the proto--cluster environment are slowly being realized. The key issue of {\sl dynamical biasing} of the galaxy population within a cluster is being probed, but conclusive answers are lacking. The dynamics of multi--phase gas, including conversion of cold, dense gas into stars and the feedback therefrom, is the largest obstacle hindering progress. An example demonstrating the state--of--the--art in this area is presented.

Abstract:Globular clusters are among the most congested stellar systems in the Universe. Internal dynamical evolution drives them toward states of high central density, while simultaneously concentrating the most massive stars and binary systems in their cores. As a result, these clusters are expected to be sites of frequent close encounters and physical collisions between stars and binaries, making them efficient factories for the production of interesting and observable astrophysical exotica. I describe some elements of the competition among stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, and other processes that control globular cluster dynamics, with particular emphasis on pathways that may lead to the formation of blue stragglers.

Understanding the Dynamical State of Globular Clusters: Core-Collapsed vs Non Core-Collapsed

Abstract:We study the dynamical evolution of globular clusters using our Hénon-type Monte Carlo code for stellar dynamics including all relevant physics such as two-body relaxation, single and binary stellar evolution, Galactic tidal stripping, and strong interactions such as physical collisions and binary mediated scattering. We compute a large database of several hundred models starting from broad ranges of initial conditions guided by observations of young and massive star clusters. We show that these initial conditions very naturally lead to present day clusters with properties including the central density, core radius, half-light radius, half-mass relaxation time, and cluster mass, that match well with those of the old Galactic globular clusters. In particular, we can naturally reproduce the bimodal distribution in observed core radii separating the "core-collapsed" vs the "non core-collapsed" clusters. We see that the core-collapsed clusters are those that have reached or are about to reach the equilibrium "binary burning" phase. The non core-collapsed clusters are still undergoing gravo-thermal contraction.

Multi-Mass Gaseous Models of Globular Clusters with Stellar Evolution

Abstract:Gaseous models have proven to be a computationally cheap and reliable tool to investigate the dynamical behaviour of globular clusters. But to compete with other approaches for modelling the evolution of star clusters various important effects have to be taken into account. These are for example the dynamical effects of a stellar mass spectrum, stellar evolution, a consistent treatment of the tidal field of the galaxy, or primordial binaries. Here we report on the effects of a mass spectrum and stellar evolution on the dynamical evolution of the cluster's post-collapse evolution (gravothermal oscillations) and show how only small changes in the mass loss rate can change the internal dynamics of the cluster.

Abstract:Aims. We perform a systematic combined photometric and kinematic analysis of a sample of globular clusters under different relaxation conditions, based on their core relaxation time (as listed in available catalogs), by means of two well-known families of spherical stellar dynamical models. Systems characterized by shorter relaxation time scales are expected to be better described by isotropic King models, while less relaxed systems might be interpreted by means of non-truncated, radially-biased anisotropic f(ν) models, originally designed to represent stellar systems produced by a violent relaxation formation process and applied here for the first time to the study of globular clusters. Methods. The comparison between dynamical models and observations is performed by fitting simultaneously surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles. For each globular cluster, the best-fit model in each family is identified, along with a full error analysis on the relevant parameters. Detailed structural properties and mass-to-light ratios are also explicitly derived. Results. We find that King models usually offer a good representation of the observed photometric profiles, but often lead to less satisfactory fits to the kinematic profiles, independently of the relaxation condition of the systems. For some less relaxed clusters, f(ν) models provide a good description of both observed profiles. Some derived structural characteristics, such as the total mass or the half-mass radius, turn out to be significantly model-dependent. The analysis confirms that, to answer some important dynamical questions that bear on the formation and evolution of globular clusters, it would be highly desirable to acquire larger numbers of accurate kinematic data-points, well distributed over the cluster field.

Computational Methods for Collisional Stellar Systems

Abstract:Dense star clusters are spectacular self-gravitating stellar systems in our Galaxy and across the Universe - in many respects. They populate disks and spheroids of galaxies as well as almost every galactic center. In massive elliptical galaxies nuclear clusters harbor supermassive black holes, which might influence the evolution of their host galaxies as a whole. The evolution of dense star clusters is not only governed by the aging of their stellar populations and simple Newtonian dynamics. For increasing particle number, unique gravitational effects of collisional many-body systems begin to dominate the early cluster evolution. As a result, stellar densities become so high that stars can interact and collide, stellar evolution and binary stars change the dynamical evolution, black holes can accumulate in their centers and merge with relativistic effects becoming important. Recent high-resolution imaging has revealed even more complex structural properties with respect to stellar populations, binary fractions and compact objects as well as - the still controversial - existence of intermediate mass black holes in clusters of intermediate mass. Dense star clusters therefore are the ideal laboratory for the concomitant study of stellar evolution and Newtonian as well as relativistic dynamics. Not only the formation and disruption of dense star clusters has to be considered but also their galactic environments in terms of initial conditions as well as their impact on galactic evolution. This review deals with the specific computational challenges for modelling dense, gravothermal star clusters.

Abstract:The study of the dynamical evolution of thermally relaxing star clusters has made enormous progress during the last decades, starting from the pioneering works by Antonov and Lynden-Bell to the present-day complex modelling including astrophysical effects such as stellar evolution, tidal fields and gravitational shocking, and binaries. Nevertheless there remain a couple of unsolved questions for surprisingly simple systems, such as initially rotating star clusters consisting of equal point masses only. ‘Thermally relaxing’ here means that the two-body relaxation time scale is shorter than the lifetime of the system, as opposed to collisionless systems. An overview of our present understanding is given and recent studies in the field of rotating star clusters and those containing many primordial binaries are given in somewhat more detail.
Anisotropic gaseous models of tidally limited star clusters -- comparison with other methods

Abstract:We present new models of the evolution and dissolution of star clusters evolving under the combined influence of internal relaxation and external tidal fields, using the anisotropic gaseous model based on the Fokker-Planck approximation, and a new escaper loss cone model. This model borrows ideas from loss cones of stellar distributions near massive black holes, and describes physical processes related to escaping stars by a simple model based on two timescales and a diffusion process. We compare our results with those of direct $N$-body models and of direct numerical solutions of the orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck equation. For this comparative study we limit ourselves to idealized single point mass star clusters, in order to present a detailed study of the physical processes determining the rate of mass loss, core collapse and other features of the system's evolution. With the positive results of our study the path is now open in the future to use the computationally efficient gaseous models for future studies with more realism (mass spectrum, stellar evolution).

The formation, evolution and disruption of star clusters with improved gravitational dynamics in simulated dwarf galaxies

Abstract:So far, even the highest resolution galaxy formation simulations with gravitational softening have failed to reproduce realistic life cycles of star clusters. We present the first star-by-star galaxy models of star cluster formation to account for hydrodynamics, star formation, stellar evolution and collisional gravitational interactions between stars and compact remnants using the updated SPHGAL+KETJU code, part of the GRIFFIN-project. Gravitational dynamics in the vicinity of $>3$ M$_\odot$ stars and their remnants are solved with a regularised integrator (KETJU) without gravitational softening. Comparisons of idealised star cluster evolution with SPHGAL+KETJU and direct N-body show broad agreement and the failure of simulations that use gravitational softening. In the hydrodynamical dwarf galaxy simulations run with SPHGAL+KETJU, clusters up to $\sim900$ M$_\odot$ are formed compact (effective radii $0.1-1$ pc) and their sizes increase by up to a factor of ten in agreement with previous N-body simulations and the observed sizes of exposed star clusters. The sizes increase rapidly once the clusters become exposed due to photoionising radiation. On average $63\%$ of the gravitationally bound clusters disrupt during the first $100$ Myr of evolution in the galactic tidal field. The addition of collisional dynamics reduces the fraction of supernovae in bound clusters by a factor of $\sim 2.6$, however the global star formation and outflow histories change by less than $30\%$. We demonstrate that the accurate treatment of gravitational encounters with massive stars enables more realistic star cluster life cycles from the earliest stages of cluster formation until disruption in simulated low-mass galaxies.

Accretion and Dynamical Interactions in Small-N Star-Forming Clusters: I. N=5 case

Abstract:We present results from high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations which explore the effects of small scale clustering in star-forming regions. A large ensemble of small-N clusters with 5 stellar seeds have been modelled and the resulting properties of stars and brown dwarfs statistically derived and compared with observational data. Close dynamical interactions between the protostars and competitive accretion driven by the cloud collapse are shown to produce a distribution of final masses which is bimodal, with most of the mass residing in the binary components. When convolved with a suitable core mass function, the final distribution of masses resembles the observed IMF, both in the stellar and sub-stellar regime. Binaries and single stars are found to constitute two kinematically distinct populations, with about half of the singles attaining velocities > 2 km/s, which might deprive low mass star-forming regions of their lightest members in a few crossing times. The eccentricity distribution of binaries and multiples is found to follow a distribution similar to that of observed long period (uncircularized) binaries. We predict that many close binary stars should have wide brown dwarfs companions. Brown dwarfs and, in general, very low mass stars, would be rare as pure binary companions. The binary fraction should be a decreasing function of primary mass, with low-mass or sub-stellar primaries being scarce. Where such binaries exist, they are either expected to be close enough (semi-major axis ~ 10 AU) to survive strong interactions with more massive binaries or else born in very small molecular cloud cores.

Abstract:We compare the results for the dynamical evolution of star clusters derived from anisotropic gaseous models with the data from N-body simulations of isolated and one-component systems, each having modest number of stars. The statistical quality of N-body data was improved by averaging results from many N-body runs, each with the same initial parameters but with different sequences of random numbers used to initialize positions and velocities of the particles. We study the development of anisotropy, the spatial evolution and energy generation by three-body binaries and its N-dependence. We estimate the following free parameters of anisotropic gaseous models: the time scale for collisional anisotropy decay and the coefficient in the formulae for energy generation by three-body binaries. To achieve a fair agreement between N-body and gaseous models for the core in pre- as well as in post-collapse only the energy generation by binaries had to be varied by N. We find that anisotropy has considerable influence on the spatial structure of the cluster particularly for the intermediate and outer regions.

Abstract:A new approach is outlined to follow the individual formation and evolution of hard three-body binaries in an evolving equal point mass star cluster. The single stars are treated as a conducting gas sphere with a standard anisotropic gaseous model, binary formation and subsequent hardening by close encounters, and relaxation (dynamical friction) of the binaries with the single stars by a Monte Carlo technique. The results agree very well with the standard theoretical models and with a direct N-body simulation. It is argued that the method can be extended to generate an efficient, cheap and realistic model of large star clusters.

Abstract:I review recent results from numerical simulations on the structure and dynamics of the ISM, and attempt to put together a coherent dynamical scenario. In particular, I discuss results on 1) the spatial distribution of the gas components, showing that reasonable agreement between simulations and observations exists, but noting that in most models the components are simply defined as temperature intervals, because distinct thermodynamic ``phases'' do not arise; 2) some statistical issues of the physical fields, like the dependence of the one-point statistics of the density field on the effective equation of state of the gas, the poor correlation of magnetic strength with density, the energy spectrum in weakly and highly compressible cases, and the one point statistics of the velocity field; 3) the effects of spectroscopic observation on distorting the physical structures and results from synthetic observations of the simulations, and 4) several dynamical and thermodynamical issues, such as the role of the thermal instability in forming and confining clouds, the continuous, rather than abrupt, transition between ``phases'', which in turn may be consequences of the dynamics rather than the agents controlling it, the possibility of short time scales ($\sim $ a few Myr) for molecular cloud formation, and the star-gas connection, mentioning that the models generally exhibit self-propagating star and cluster formation, while the stars may drive the medium- and small-scale gas motions, and that a ``star formation instability'' may induce chaotic behavior of the star formation rate locally. I conclude with a round-up view, and a discussion of the work needed ahead.

Abstract:I review the field of globular cluster system (GCS) kinematics, including a brief primer on observational methods. The kinematical structures of spiral galaxy GCSs so far appear to be broadly similar. The inferred rotation and mass profiles of elliptical galaxy halos exhibit a diversity of behaviors, requiring more systematic observational and theoretical studies.

SO(3) vortices as a mechanism for generating a mass gap in the 2d SU(2) principal chiral model

Abstract:We propose a mechanism that can create a mass gap in the SU(2) chiral spin model at arbitrarily small temperatures. We give a sufficient condition for the mass gap to be non-zero in terms of the behaviour of an external Z(2) flux introduced by twisted boundary conditions. This condition in turn is transformed into an effective dual Ising model with an external magnetic field generated by SO(3) vortices. We show that having a nonzero magnetic field in the effective Ising model is sufficient for the SU(2) system to have a mass gap. We also show that certain vortex correlation inequalities, if satisfied, would imply a nonzero effective magnetic field. Finally we give some plausibility arguments and Monte Carlo evidence for the required correlation inequalities.

Abstract:Spherically symmetric equal mass star clusters containing a large amount of primordial binaries are studied using a hybrid method, consisting of a gas dynamical model for single stars and a Monte Carlo treatment for relaxation of binaries and the setup of close resonant and fly-by encounters of single stars with binaries and binaries with each other (three- and four-body encounters). What differs from our previous work is that each encounter is being integrated using a highly accurate direct few-body integrator which uses regularized variables. Hence we can study the systematic evolution of individual binary orbital parameters (eccentricity, semi-major axis) and differential and total cross sections for hardening, dissolution or merging of binaries (minimum distance) from a sampling of several ten thousands of scattering events as they occur in real cluster evolution including mass segregation of binaries, gravothermal collapse and reexpansion, binary burning phase and ultimately gravothermal oscillations. For the first time we are able to present empirical cross sections for eccentricity variation of binaries in close three- and four-body encounters. It is found that a large fraction of three-body and four-body encounters results in merging. Previous cross sections obtained by Spitzer and Gao for strong encounters can be reproduced, while for weak encounters non-standard processes like formation of hierarchical triples occur.
Stellar, Brown Dwarf, and Multiple Star Properties from Hydrodynamical Simulations of Star Cluster Formation

Abstract:We report the statistical properties of stars, brown dwarfs and multiple systems obtained from the largest hydrodynamical simulation of star cluster formation to date that resolves masses down to the opacity limit for fragmentation (a few Jupiter masses). The simulation is essentially identical to that of Bate, Bonnell & Bromm except that the initial molecular cloud is larger and more massive. It produces more than 1250 stars and brown dwarfs, providing unprecedented statistical information that can be compared with observational surveys. We find that hydrodynamical/sink particle simulations can reproduce many of the observed stellar properties very well. Binarity as a function of primary mass, the frequency of very-low-mass (VLM) binaries, general trends for the separation and mass ratio distributions of binaries, and the relative orbital orientations of triples systems are all in reasonable agreement with observations. We also examine the radial variations of binarity, velocity dispersion, and mass function in the resulting stellar cluster and the distributions of disc truncation radii due to dynamical interactions. For VLM binaries, we find that their frequency when using small accretion radii and gravitational softening is similar to that expected from observational surveys (approximately 20 percent). We also find that VLM binaries evolve from wide, unequal-mass systems towards close equal-mass systems as they form. The two main deficiencies of the calculations are that they over produce brown dwarfs relative to stars and that there are too few unequal mass binaries with K and G-dwarf primaries. [Abridged]
