Abstract:Cholesterol-lowering therapy using statins significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, extensive use of statins leads to increases of other effects, both undesirable and beneficial, or “pleiotropic” effects. Recent evidence suggests that higher doses of statins could improve clinical outcomes compared with conventional doses, but whether this benefit is due to additional pleiotropic effects is uncertain. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that higher doses of atorvastatin would have beneficial effects on the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 in patients with high-risk cardiovascular disease.
