Abstract:An optical setup that can generate a focused light spot, with its shape tunable from a very sharp peak-centered beam to a donut-shaped dark-centered beam, is always desired in optical tweezing. This setup is now realized by incorporating an image inverting interferometer (III) and a helical phase element into a radially polarized beam generator, which enables the trapping and control of a large variety of particles with a single optical tweezing system. The performance of this system is investigated theoretically.

Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.

Abstract:Optical tweezers have been widely used for optical trapping and manipulating particles at the microscopic scale with a tightly focused laser beam. Over the recent years, optical fiber tweezers have attracted extensive attention due to their simple fabrication process, compact structure, strong anti-interference ability, convenient utilization, compatibility with chip devices, and flexible operation. In this review, the principle of optical force-based trapping is described, and the different fabrication methods of optical fiber tweezers are comprehensively discussed, including heating and pulling, chemical etching, grinding and polishing, coaxial splicing, photopolymer manufacturing, focused ion beam milling, and other emerging super-surface processing techniques. Then, the applications of such tweezers in optical manipulation, optical drive, optical transportation, optical imaging, and optical measurement are summarized. Finally, the future development prospects of optical fiber tweezers are presented.

Abstract:Near-field optical tweezers is a new technology based on the near-field optical theory, which can stably trap particles. Compared with conventional far-field optical tweezers based on the single-beam gradient force, near-field optical tweezers which overcomes the diffraction limitation of near-field light optical resolution, thermal effects and many other disadvantages, can achieve the capture on particles in nano order, and have aroused much attention in the field of physics, cell engineering, biomedicine, and so on. Firstly, the model of near-field optical tweezers based on evanescent field and the basic principles of trapping were described. Secondly, the development of total reflection prism optical tweezers, probe type optical tweezers, nano-pore optical tweezers, focused evanescent field optical tweezers, micro-nano fiber optical tweezers, and micro-resonator coupling structure type near-field optical tweezers was introduced. In the end, the applications of optical tweezers in the field of biomedicine were mainly introduced.

Abstract:Optical tweezers (OTs) can transfer light momentum to particles, achieving the precise manipulation of particles through optical forces. Due to the properties of non-contact and precise control, OTs have provided a gateway for exploring the mysteries behind nonlinear optics, soft-condensed-matter physics, molecular biology, and analytical chemistry. In recent years, OTs have been combined with microfluidic chips to overcome their limitations in, for instance, speed and efficiency, creating a technology known as "optofluidic tweezers." This paper describes static OTs briefly first. Next, we overview recent developments in optofluidic tweezers, summarizing advancements in capture, manipulation, sorting, and measurement based on different technologies. The focus is on various kinds of optofluidic tweezers, such as holographic optical tweezers, photonic-crystal optical tweezers, and waveguide optical tweezers. Moreover, there is a continuing trend of combining optofluidic tweezers with other techniques to achieve greater functionality, such as antigen-antibody interactions and Raman tweezers. We conclude by summarizing the main challenges and future directions in this research field.

Abstract:As a versatile tool for trapping and manipulating neutral particles, optical tweezers have been studied in a broad range of fields such as molecular biology, nanotechnology, and experimentally physics since Arthur Ashkin pioneered the field in the early 1970s. By levitating the sensor with a laser beam instead of adhering it to solid components, excellent environmental decoupling is achieved. Furthermore, unlike levitating particles in liquid or air, optical tweezers operating in vacuum are isolated from environmental thermal noise, thus eliminating the primary source of dissipation present for most inertial sensors. This attracted great attention in both fundamental and applied physics. In this paper we review the history and the basic concepts of optical tweezers in vacuum and provide an overall understanding of the field.

Abstract:Since the pioneering work of Arthur Ashkin, optical tweezers have become an indispensable tool for contactless manipulation of micro- and nanoparticles. Nowadays optical tweezers are employed in a myriad of applications demonstrating the importance of these tools. While the basic principle of optical tweezers is the use of a strongly focused laser beam to trap and manipulate particles, ever more complex experimental set-ups are required in order to perform novel and challenging experiments. With this article, we provide a detailed step- by-step guide for the construction of advanced optical manipulation systems. First, we explain how to build a single-beam optical tweezers on a home-made microscope and how to calibrate it. Improving on this design, we realize a holographic optical tweezers, which can manipulate independently multiple particles and generate more sophisticated wavefronts such as Laguerre-Gaussian beams. Finally, we explain how to implement a speckle optical tweezers, which permit one to employ random speckle light fields for deterministic optical manipulation.

Abstract:Optical trapping is widely used in different areas, ranging from biomedical applications, to physics and material sciences. In recent years, optical fiber tweezers have attracted significant attention in the field of optical trapping due to their flexible manipulation, compact structure, and easy fabrication. As a versatile tool for optical trapping and manipulation, optical fiber tweezers can be used to trap, manipulate, arrange, and assemble tiny objects. Here, we review the optical fiber tweezers-based trapping and manipulation, including dual fiber tweezers for trapping and manipulation, single fiber tweezers for trapping and single cell analysis, optical fiber tweezers for cell assembly, structured optical fiber for enhanced trapping and manipulation, subwavelength optical fiber wire for evanescent fields-based trapping and delivery, and photothermal trapping, assembly, and manipulation.

Multiple Optical Tweezers Generated from Phase Fresnel Lens Array

Abstract:We report a new method to generate multiple optical traps by using phase Fresnel lens (PFL) array. We also demonstrate its applications on manipulating micro particles in experiment. In our experiment, the PFL array is formed by a spatial light modulation. The multiple beams generated by PFL array are directed into the inverted microscope and are highly focused in the focus plane of the objective. The 1.4μm polystyrene spheres are trapped in the experiment. Each of the trapped particles can be controlled by changing the position of the corresponding Fresnel zone plate in the array. Comparing with the hologram methods, which is the most popular method in generating optical trap arrays, the PFL array method has increased the trapping efficiency. Because the power of the useless zero-order light in the hologram method can be used in PFL array method. Besides, each of the trapped particles can be controlled separately in PFL array method, which makes micromanipulation more conveniently.

Abstract:Since their invention in 1986 by Arthur Ashkin and colleagues, optical tweezers have become an essential tool in several fields of physics, spectroscopy, biology, nanotechnology, and thermodynamics. In this Tutorial, we provide a primer on how to calibrate optical tweezers and how to use them for advanced applications. After a brief general introduction on optical tweezers, we focus on describing and comparing the various available calibration techniques. Then, we discuss some cutting-edge applications of optical tweezers in a liquid medium, namely to study single-molecule and single-cell mechanics, microrheology, colloidal interactions, statistical physics, and transport phenomena. Finally, we consider optical tweezers in vacuum, where the absence of a viscous medium offers vastly different dynamics and presents new challenges. We conclude with some perspectives for the field and the future application of optical tweezers. This Tutorial provides both a step-by-step guide ideal for non-specialists entering the field and a comprehensive manual of advanced techniques useful for expert practitioners. All the examples are complemented by the sample data and software necessary to reproduce them.

Abstract:Abstract The possibility for the manipulation of many different samples using only the light from a laser beam opened the way to a variety of experiments. The technique, known as Optical Tweezers, is nowadays employed in a multitude of applications demonstrating its relevance. Since the pioneering work of Arthur Ashkin, where he used a single strongly focused laser beam, ever more complex experimental set-ups are required in order to perform novel and challenging experiments. Here we provide a comprehensive review of the theoretical background and experimental techniques. We start by giving an overview of the theory of optical forces: first, we consider optical forces in approximated regimes when the particles are much larger (ray optics) or much smaller (dipole approximation) than the light wavelength; then, we discuss the full electromagnetic theory of optical forces with a focus on T-matrix methods. Then, we describe the important aspect of Brownian motion in optical traps and its implementation in optical tweezers simulations. Finally, we provide a general description of typical experimental setups of optical tweezers and calibration techniques with particular emphasis on holographic optical tweezers.

Abstract:Abstract Optical tweezers and associated manipulation tools in the far field have had a major impact on scientific and engineering research by offering precise manipulation of small objects. More recently, the possibility of performing manipulation with surface plasmons has opened opportunities not feasible with conventional far-field optical methods. The use of surface plasmon techniques enables excitation of hotspots much smaller than the free-space wavelength; with this confinement, the plasmonic field facilitates trapping of various nanostructures and materials with higher precision. The successful manipulation of small particles has fostered numerous and expanding applications. In this paper, we review the principles of and developments in plasmonic tweezers techniques, including both nanostructure-assisted platforms and structureless systems. Construction methods and evaluation criteria of the techniques are presented, aiming to provide a guide for the design and optimization of the systems. The most common novel applications of plasmonic tweezers, namely, sorting and transport, sensing and imaging, and especially those in a biological context, are critically discussed. Finally, we consider the future of the development and new potential applications of this technique and discuss prospects for its impact on science.

Recent advances promise to take optical tweezers out of the laboratory and into the mainstream of manufacturing and diagnostics; they may even become consumer products. Abstract:Neutral atoms trapped in microscopic optical tweezers have emerged as a growing platform for quantum science. Achieving homogeneity over the tweezers array is an important technical requirement, and our research focuses on improving it for holographic arrays generated with a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM). We present a series of optimization methods to calculate better holograms, fueled by precise measurement schemes. These innovations enable to achieve intensity homogeneity with a relative standard deviation of 0.3 %, shape variations below 0.5 %, and positioning errors within 70 nm. Such ultra-precise holographic optical tweezers arrays allow for the most demanding applications in quantum science with atomic arrays.

Abstract:Optical tweezers have become the method of choice in single-molecule manipulation studies. In this Primer, we first review the physical principles of optical tweezers and the characteristics that make them a powerful tool to investigate single molecules. We then introduce the modifications of the method to extend the measurement of forces and displacements to torques and angles, and to develop optical tweezers with single-molecule fluorescence detection capabilities. We discuss force and torque calibration of these instruments, their various modes of operation and most common experimental geometries. We describe the type of data obtained in each experimental design and their analyses. This description is followed by a survey of applications of these methods to the studies of protein–nucleic acid interactions, protein/RNA folding and molecular motors. We also discuss data reproducibility, the factors that lead to the data variability among different laboratories and the need to develop field standards. We cover the current limitations of the methods and possible ways to optimize instrument operation, data extraction and analysis, before suggesting likely areas of future growth.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single fiber optical tweezer for particle multi-dimensional arrangement based on an optical bottle beam produced by concatenating a few-mode fiber and a step-index multimode fiber. We use the mode division multiplexing technology to produce the optical bottle beam with uneven energy distribution. The LP11 and LP21 mode beams are excited by docking a 980 nm single-mode fiber at the outlet of the light source to a few-mode fiber with a defined offset. The few-mode fiber allows LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams to be spread in. The optical bottle beam is focused on a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end. The LP01 mode beam is used to trap particles and array them in a one-dimension space (linear arrangement), the LP01 and LP11 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a two-dimension space (planar arrangement), and the LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a three-dimension space (solid arrangement). The proposed fiber optical tweezer is simple in structure and will allow us to examine the interaction between the cells when held in close proximity.

Abstract:It is common to introduce optical tweezers using either geometric optics for large particles or the Rayleigh approximation for very small particles. These approaches are successful at conveying the key ideas behind optical tweezers in their respective regimes. However, they are insufficient for modelling particles of intermediate size and large particles with small features. For this, a full field approach provides greater insight into the mechanisms involved in trapping. The advances in computational capability over the last decade has led to better modelling and understanding of optical tweezers. Problems that were previously difficult to model computationally can now be solved using a variety of methods on modern systems. These advances in computational power allow for full field solutions to be visualised, leading to increased understanding of the fields and behaviour in various scenarios. In this paper we describe the operation of optical tweezers using full field simulations calculated using the finite difference time domain method. We use these simulations to visually illustrate various situations relevant to optical tweezers, from the basic operation of optical tweezers, to engineered particles and evanescent fields.

In vacuum metasurface for optical microtrap array

Abstract:Optical tweezer arrays of laser-cooled and individual controlled particles have revolutionized the atomic, molecular and optical physics, and they afford exquisite capabilities for applications in quantum simulation of many-body physics, quantum computation and quantum sensing. Underlying this development is the technical maturity of generating scalable optical beams, enabled by active components and high numerical aperture objective. However, such a complex combination of bulk optics outside the vacuum chamber is very sensitive to any vibration and drift. Here we demonstrate the generation of 3*3 static tweezer array with a single chip-scale multifunctional metasurface element in vacuum, replacing the meter-long free space optics. Fluorescence counts on the camera validates the successfully trapping of the atomic ensemble array. Further, we discuss the strategy to achieve low scattering and crosstalk, where a metasurface design featuring dual-wavelength independent control is included. Our results, together with other recent development in integrated photonics for cold atoms, could pave the way for compact and portable quantum sensors and simulators in platforms of neutral atom arrays.
