Abstract:Time directions are not invariant in conventional thermodynamics. We broadly follow ideas of Ludwig Boltzmann and investigate implications of postulating time-directional invariance in thermodynamics. In this investigation, we require that thermodynamic descriptions are not changed under time reversal accompanied by replacement of matter by antimatter (i.e. CPT-invariant thermodynamics). The matter and antimatter are defined as thermodynamic concepts without detailing their physical structure. Our analysis stays within the limits of conceptual thermodynamics and leads to effective negative temperatures, to thermodynamic restrictions on time travel and to inherent antagonism of matter and antimatter. This antagonism is purely thermodynamic; it explains the difficulty in achieving thermodynamic equilibrium between matter and antimatter and does not postulate their mutual annihilation on contact. We believe that the conclusions of this work can be of interest not only for people researching or teaching thermodynamics but also for a wider scientific audience.

Abstract:The question why natural processes tend to flow along a preferred direction has always been considered from within the perspective of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, especially its statistical formulation due to Maxwell and Boltzmann. In this article, we re-examine the subject from the perspective of a new historico-philosophical formulation based on the careful use of selected theoretical elements taken from three key modern thinkers: Hans Reichenbach, Ilya Prigogine, and Roger Penrose, who are seldom considered together in the literature. We emphasize in our analysis how the entropy concept was introduced in response to the desire to extend the applicability of the Second Law to the cosmos at large (Reichenbach and Penrose), and to examine whether intrinsic irreversibility is a fundamental universal characteristics of nature (Prigogine). While the three thinkers operate with vastly different technical proposals and belong to quite distinct intellectual backgrounds, some similarities are detected in their thinking. We philosophically examine these similarities but also bring into focus the uniqueness of each approach. Our purpose is not providing an exhaustive derivations of logical concepts identified in one thinker in terms of ideas found in the others. Instead, the main objective of this work is to stimulate historico-philosophical investigations and inquiries into the problem of the direction of time in nature by way of crossdisciplinary examinations of previous theories commonly treated in literature as disparate domains.

Abstract:Emergence of one-time-direction macroscopic evolution of a classical system of two mixed gases having different temperatures is derived and explained. The analysis performed at the microscopic level, where the time-symmetric laws of mechanics govern the particles collisions, leads to a time-asymmetric macroscopic heat transfer equation and a theorem analogous to the Boltzmann H-theorem. Some statistical symmetries in the velocity distribution that should be satisfied by the incoming and outgoing particles are pointed out. The time reversed evolution is shown to be highly improbable because in this case these typical symmetries are broken. Additionally, some remarks explaining implicit time-asymmetry of the Boltzmann \emph{Stosszahlansatz} are made.

Abstract:We demonstrate that irreversibility arises from the principle of microscopic reversibility and the presence of memory in the time evolution of a single copy of a system driven by a protocol. We introduce microscopic reversibility by using the concept of protocol- and pathway-dependent thermodynamic function, as defined in J.R. Arias-Gonzalez, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1511.08017" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1511.08017">arXiv:1511.08017</a> [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://cond-mat.stat" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-mech], and memory by using the concept of non-Markovianity, as in J.R. We define work as the change in free energy and heat as the change in entropy for micoscopic, individual pathways of a system subject to a protocol. We find that all non-equilibrium statistics emerge naturally. In particular, we derive most known fluctuation theorems and formulate two others. While the conservation of energy is invoked both at the level of the individual pathway and in ensemble-average processes, the second law of thermodynamics and the time arrow, which are only fulfilled in ensemble-average processes, are shown to be consequences of microscopic reversibility and non-Markovianity.

Abstract:Fundamental laws of physics are symmetric under time reversal ($T$) symmetry, but the $T$ symmetry is strongly broken in the macroscopic world. In this Perspective, I review $T$ symmetry breaking frameworks: \textit{second law of thermodynamics, multiscale energy transfer}, and \textit{open systems}. In driven dissipative nonequilibrium systems, including turbulence, the multiscale energy flux from large scales to small scales helps determine the arrow of time. In addition, open systems are often irreversible due to particle and energy exchanges between the system and the environment. Causality is another important factor that breaks the $T$ symmetry.

Abstract:Finite-time thermodynamics is the extension of classical thermodynamics and a new branch of the modern thermodynamics. It is mainly used to investigate the regular of energy and entropy flows of non-equilibrium systems in finite time. It is different from not only irreversible thermodynamics established in the 1930's but also engineering thermodynamics, and has in itself some distinct theoretical characteristics. Now, it has extensively been applied to many new objec tives in physics, chemistry, and engineering thermal physics and a series of new relevant theories have been obtained. Moreover, it is pointed out that the endoreversible Carnot cycle models, CA efficiency at maximum power output, fundamental optimum relations, unified theory of endore versible cycles, and theory of irreversible cycles are some important problems of finite-time ther modynamics and play a great role during the development of finite-time thermodynamics. In this paper one part of our research work related to the important problems mentioned above is intro duced simply.

Abstract:Our fundamental theories, i.e., the quantum theory and general relativity, are invariant under time reversal. Only when we treat system from the point of view of thermodynamics, i.e., averaging between many subsystem components, an arrow of time emerges. The relation between thermodynamic and the quantum theory has been fertile, deeply explored and still a source of new investigations. The relation between the quantum theory and gravity, while it has not yet brought an established theory of quantum gravity, has certainly sparkled in depth analysis and tentative new theories. On the other hand, the connection between gravity and thermodynamics is less investigated and more puzzling. I review a selection of results in covariant thermodynamics, such as the construction of a covariant notion of thermal equilibrium by considering tripartite systems. I discuss how such construction requires a relational take on thermodynamics, similarly of what happens in the quantum theory and in gravity

The second concept is based on the idea of the initial microscopic irreversibility of dynamics, one of the mechanisms of which is the relativistic retardation of interactions between particles.

Abstract:The emergence of irreversibility in physical processes, despite the fundamentally reversible nature of quantum mechanics, remains an open question in physics. This thesis explores the intricate relationship between quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, with a particular focus on minimizing entropy production in finite-time processes. By employing tools from quantum information theory and geometric thermodynamics, we tackle the challenge of deriving irreversible thermodynamic behavior from the reversible microscopic framework of quantum mechanics. We begin with a comprehensive review of the laws of thermodynamics, setting the stage for the subsequent analyses. We introduce novel developments in quantum thermodynamics through a generalized framework for geometric thermodynamics, which enables the derivation of finite-time corrections beyond the Markovian regime. Building on this foundation, we extend Landauer's principle by incorporating a finite-time correction that highlights the necessity of strong coupling for optimal information erasure processes. This result underscores the emergence of Planckian time as a fundamental speed limit to thermalization. Additionally, we explore how collective effects can be harnessed to reduce energy dissipation in thermodynamic operations, revealing that classical correlations between systems can significantly mitigate dissipation, though this may pose new questions regarding the third law of thermodynamics. Finally, we optimize thermodynamic processes in mesoscopic systems, including quantum dot engines and information engines. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the fundamental limits of irreversibility but also open new avenues for research. Future works will focus on fully exploiting collective effects, aligning these with the third law of thermodynamics, and understanding the thermodynamic consistency of master equations.

Time-Reversal Symmetry in Open Classical and Quantum Systems

Abstract:Deriving an arrow of time from time-reversal symmetric microscopic dynamics is a fundamental open problem in physics. Here we focus on several derivations of dissipative dynamics and the thermodynamic arrow of time to study precisely how time-reversal symmetry is broken in open classical and quantum systems. These derivations all involve the Markov approximation applied to a system interacting with an infinite heat bath. We find that the Markov approximation does not imply a violation of time-reversal symmetry. Our results show instead that the time-reversal symmetry is maintained in standard dissipative equations of motion, such as the Langevin equation and the Fokker-Planck equation in open classical dynamics, and the Brownian motion, the Lindblad and the Pauli master equations in open quantum dynamics. In all cases, the resulting equations of motion describe thermalisation that occurs into the future as well as into the past. As a consequence, we argue that the resulting dynamics are better described by a definition of Markovianity that is symmetric with respect to the future and the past.

Abstract:The discussion on time-reversal in quantum mechanics exists at least since Wigner's ``Uber die Operation der Zeitumkehr in der Quantenmechanik'' paper in 1932. If and how the dynamics of the quantum world is time-reversible has been the subject of many controversies. Some have seen quantum mechanics as fundamentally time-irreversible, see for example von Neumann, and some have seen in that the ultimate cause of time's arrow and second law behavior. In his best-selling book ``The Emperor's New Mind'', Roger Penrose argues similarly and concludes that ``our sought-for quantum gravity must be a time-asymmetric theory'' [p.351]. Not so long ago, we read yet about another project in Physicalia 26: to extend quantum mechanics into new fundamentally irreversible equations, thus proposing a new theory giving ``... une description fondamentale irreversible de tout systeme physique''.

Abstract:Fundamental interactions are either fully or nearly symmetric under time reversal. But macroscopic phenomena have a definite arrow of time. Though there is no convergence on the origin of time's preferential direction, many researchers believe that the direction of time is towards increasing entropy. In this paper, we provide an alternate point of view. In driven-dissipative nonequilibrium systems forced at large scale, the energy flows from large scales to dissipative scales. This generic and multiscale process breaks time reversal symmetry and principle of detailed balance, thus can yield an arrow of time. In this paper we propose that conversion of large-scale coherence to small-scales incoherence could be treated as a dissipation mechanism for generic physical systems. We illustrate the above processes using turbulence as an example. We argue that the above picture of time irreversibility could be employed to the universe and to many-body quantum systems.

Abstract:People have long had a problem: the equations of motion that reflect the laws of physics are invariant under time inversion, while there always are irreversible processes for gases composed of microscopic particles. This article solves the problem. The point is that we should distinguish between the concepts of the equation of motion and concrete motion. We also need to distinguish between the concepts of time-inverse motion and reverse motion. The former is anticlockwise, which is a fictional motion, while the latter is clockwise. For the single-particle motions in classical mechanics and in quantum mechanics, we present mathematical expressions for time-inversion motion and reverse motion, respectively. We demonstrate that single-particle motion is irreversible. The definition of the reversibility of two-particle collisions is given. According to the definition, the two-particle collision as a microscopic motion process is irreversible. Consequently, for a gas consisting of a large number of particles colliding with each other, its movement should be irreversible, unless the condition of detailed balance is met. We provide a physical explanation for detailed balance, which does not concern the meaning of microscopic reversibility. The detailed balance means that after a pair of reciprocal collisions occur, the distribution function of the particles remains unchanged. Therefore, microscopic two-particle collision events are irreversible, but the statistical average of a large number of collision events makes it possible for the macroscopic process of a gas to be reversible. Conclusively, we clarify the microscopic mechanism of the irreversible process of gases.
A New Thermodynamics Featuring the Arrow in Time

Abstract:It is a truth universally acknowledged that all isolated macroscopic systems must be in want of ever greater disorder, with due apologies to Jane Austen for plagiarizing the opening line in her novel {\it Pride and Prejudice}. This common, everyday process, often referred to as the Arrow of Time, has not been able to find a comfortable home in the body of modern statistical physics. There is a hint of such a disordering arrow in the second law of traditional thermostatics but, properly stated, that law relates only to the static equilibrium state of confined, isolated macroscopic matter. We will attempt to enhance today's thermo{\it statics} with a true thermo{\it dynamics} in which the disordering arrow in time is shown to be responsible for all the order -- creation we find in the universe -- including the existential order needed to sustain life.

Abstract: Master equation with microscopic reversibility ($q_{ij}\neq 0$ iff $q_{ji}\neq 0$) has a {\em thermodynamic superstructure} in terms of two state functions $S$, entropy, and $F$, free energy: It is discovered recently that entropy production rate $e_p=-dF/dt+Q_{hk}$ with both $-dF/dt=f_d, Q_{hk} \ge 0$. The free energy dissipation $f_d\ge 0$ reflects irreversibility in spontaneous self-organization; house-keeping heat $Q_{hk}\ge 0$ reveals broken time-symmetry in open system driven away from equilibrium. In a Riemannian geometric space, the master equation is a geodesic flow when $Q_{hk}=0$; here we show that the $e_p$ decomposition is orthogonal: $e_p$, $f_d$, $Q_{hk}$ forms a pythagorean triples. Gradient flow means {\em maximum dissipation principle} outside Onsager's regime. The presence of $Q_{hk}$ makses gradient flow no longer generally true. Thermodynamics of stochastic physics requires a new geometric perspective.

Abstract:In classical thermodynamics, heat cannot spontaneously pass from a colder system to a hotter system, which is called the thermodynamic arrow of time. However, if the initial states are entangled, the direction of the thermodynamic arrow of time may not be guaranteed. Here we take the thermofield double state at $0+1$ dimension as the initial state and assume its gravity duality to be the eternal black hole in AdS$_2$ space. We make the temperature difference between the two sides by changing the Hamiltonian. We turn on proper interaction between the two sides and calculate the changes in energy and entropy. The energy transfer, as well as the thermodynamic arrow of time, are mainly determined by the competition between two channels: thermal diffusion and anomalous heat flow. The former is not related to the wormhole and obeys the thermodynamic arrow of time; the latter is related to the wormhole and reverses the thermodynamic arrow of time, i.e. transferring energy from the colder side to the hotter side at the cost of entanglement consumption. Finally, we find that the thermal diffusion wins the competition, and the whole thermodynamic arrow of time has not been reversed.

Abstract:Quantifying irreversibility of a system using finite information constitutes a major challenge in stochastic thermodynamics. We introduce an observable that measures the time-reversal asymmetry between two states after a given time lag. Our central result is a bound on the time-reversal asymmetry in terms of the total cycle affinity driving the system out of equilibrium. This result leads to further thermodynamic bounds on the asymmetry of directed fluxes; on the asymmetry of finite-time cross-correlations; and on the cycle affinity of coarse-grained dynamics.

Abstract:Does thermodynamics still hold true for mecroscopic small systems with only limited degrees of freedom? Do concepts such as temperature, entropy, work done, heat transfer, isothermal processes, and the Carnot cycle remain valid? Does the thermodynamic theory for small systems need modifying or supplementing compared with traditional thermodynamics applicable to macroscopic systems? Taking a single-particle system for example, we investigate the applicability of thermodynamic concepts and laws in small systems. We have found that thermodynamic laws still hold true in small systems at an ensemble-averaged level. After considering the information erasure of the Maxwell’s demon, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated. Additionally, ‘small systems’ bring some new features. Fluctuations in thermodynamic quantities become prominent. In any process far from equilibrium, the distribution functions of thermodynamic quantities satisfy certain rigorously established identities. These identities are known as fluctuation theorems. The second law of thermodynamics can be derived from them. Therefore, fluctuation theorems can be considered an upgradation to the second law of thermodynamics. They enable physicists to obtain equilibrium properties (e.g. free energy difference) by measuring physical quantities associated with non-equilibrium processes (e.g. work distributions). Furthermore, despite some distinct quantum features, the performance of quantum heat engine does not outperform that of classical heat engine. The introduction of motion equations into small system makes the relationship between thermodynamics and mechanics closer than before. Physicists can study energy dissipation in non-equilibrium process and optimize the power and efficiency of heat engine from the first principle. These findings enrich the content of thermodynamic theory and provide new ideas for establishing a general framework for non-equilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:Macroscopic many-body systems always exhibit irreversible behaviors. However, in principle, the underlying microscopic dynamics of the many-body system, either the (quantum) von Neumann or (classical) Liouville equation, guarantees that the entropy of an isolated system does not change with time, which is quite confusing compared with the macroscopic irreversibility. We notice that indeed the macroscopic entropy increase in standard thermodynamics is associated with the correlation production inside the full ensemble state of the whole system. In open systems, the irreversible entropy production of the open system can be proved to be equivalent with the correlation production between the open system and its environment. During the free diffusion of an isolated ideal gas, the correlation between the spatial and momentum distributions is increasing monotonically, and it could well reproduce the entropy increase result in standard thermodynamics. In the presence of particle collisions, the single-particle distribution always approaches the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution as its steady state, and its entropy increase indeed indicates the correlation production between the particles. In all these examples, the total entropy of the whole isolated system keeps constant, while the correlation production reproduces the irreversible entropy increase in the standard macroscopic thermodynamics. In this sense, the macroscopic irreversibility and the microscopic reversibility no longer contradict with each other.

Abstract:The mechanism by which thermodynamics sets the direction of time's arrow has long fascinated scientists. Here, we show that a machine learning algorithm can learn to discern the direction of time's arrow when provided with a system's microscopic trajectory as input. The performance of our algorithm matches fundamental bounds predicted by nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Examination of the algorithm's decision-making process reveals that it discovers the underlying thermodynamic mechanism and the relevant physical observables. Our results indicate that machine learning techniques can be used to study systems out of equilibrium, and ultimately to uncover physical principles.
