Abstract:Objective To study the effect of frequent subclinical epileptiform discharges on sleep architecture. Methods A continuous overnight video-EEG polysomnography(VPSG)was performed in 44 children with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes(BECTS).Results The spike wave index(SWI)in patients with BECTS decreased from the first sleep cycle to the second sleep cycle, with higher values during the non-rapid eye movement(NREM)sleep compared with the rapid eye movement(REM)sleep(P<0.05).SWI was the highest in the NREM stage 2 sleep, followed by the NREM stage 1 sleep, the NREM stage 3/4 sleep, and the REM sleep(P<0.05).The majority of BECTS patients had increased proportions of NREM stage 1 sleep and decreased proportions of NREM stage 3/4 sleep and REM sleep compared to normal values. There was a positive correlation between SWI and the incidence of sleep architecture abnormality in patients with BECTS(P<0.05).Conclusions Frequent subclinical epileptiform discharges during the night may be contributed to sleep architecture impairments in children with BECTS.
