Abstract:Chillers are widely used in commercial buildings for air conditioning, and their energy consumption is the main contribution to the building’s carbon emissions. Currently, the COPs of small- and medium-capacity screw chillers are still generally lower than 6.5, whereas large-capacity commercial centrifugal chillers have achieved an ultra-high energy-efficiency level of COP ≥ 7.0. To achieve an ultra-high energy efficiency of COP ≥ 6.5 in medium-capacity chillers, the authors developed a 200 RT screw chiller by adopting the technologies of two-stage compression and interstage vapor injection. The whole development process, including the design, simulation, analysis, and experiment, is presented in this paper. It was found that the two-stage compression technology could effectively boost the performance of the chiller’s compressor to a maximum volumetric and adiabatic efficiency of 99% and 80%, respectively. With the interstage vapor injection technology, the chiller’s cooling capacity and COP were increased by more than 11% and 8%, respectively. When the use of these two technologies was combined, the maximum COP of the chiller reached 7.17. Additionally, under these working conditions, the COP and integrated part-load value (IPLV) were 6.74 and 10.04, respectively. In all, the combination use of vapor injection and two-stage compression technologies shows great potential to improve the performance of chillers. The work and conclusions described here might provide an effective reference for the future development of high-efficiency small- and medium-capacity screw chillers.

Abstract:Starts with the occurrence of backflow in by-pass pipe in a case,illustrates that chilled water of large flow rate and small temperature difference in user side not only affects the chilled water transporting efficiency,but also adversely affects the chiller's operation.The problem is attributed to the irrational designed demand of terminals and over supply by chilled water system.Both of the terminals and chilled water system differential pressure set points should be optimized in renovation.With an actual example,presents the process of chilled water system diagnosis and renovation and its energy saving effect.

Energy Efficiency Optimization Strategies for University Research Buildings with Hot Summer and Cold Winter Climate of China Based on the Adaptive Thermal Comfort

Abstract:Hot summer and cold winter zone is a typical climate region in China with high temperatures and stuffiness in summer and low temperature and moisture in winter. The existing buildings bear of both poor thermal performance of building envelope and poor indoor thermal environment. With the development of social economy, increasing demand towards building indoor thermal environment is much more urgent than before, and hence energy consumption has rapidly risen. Energy efficiency retrofit with low cost has become a priority in this region. Universities and colleges are one of the typical energy consumers in this region, which are insufficient in research. Over all the campus buildings, research building occupies a large part in total campus energy use, and hence becomes the main retrofit objects. Research buildings have complicated functions of offices, scientific research and laboratories, and space heating and cooling behaviors have their own characteristics, which have the large effect on space heating and cooling use. However, there is little knowledge about adaptive thermal comfort and corresponding heating and conditioning energy-use behaviors. In view of this, in this paper, a typical research building located in Hangzhou was chosen and the measurements on indoor thermal environment heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and energy consumption were carried out during July 2016 to October 2017. By the analysis on field investigation, delivered questionnaires and measured data, the typical space heating and cooling behaviors, fenestration and thermal environment are analyzed. On this base, energy efficiency optimization strategies in terms of building envelope thermal performance, sun shading, and adaptive space heating and cooling behavior are explored by the simulation. The study provides the technic support for energy saving retrofitting of campus buildings in this region.
Research on Systematic Analysis and Optimization Method for Chillers Based on Model Predictive Control: A Case Study

Abstract:Chillers are key components of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and consume large amounts of energy in commercial buildings. This study conducted field tests on the operation per-formance of chillers in large-scale commercial buildings and analyzed the typical problems influencing their energy efficiency. Subsequently, based on the field test results, a systematic optimization method for chillers was proposed based on external factors, internal factors, and synergy control between them. For external factors, the cooling load prediction model comprising a linear model based on the time series was constructed using historical operation data; the proposed model could be applied to guide the con-trol of chillers to match the building cooling demand accurately with high energy efficiency. For internal factors, the energy performance model of the chiller was constructed using historical operation data, and the operation characteristics of constant-speed and variable-speed centrifugal chillers were compared and summarized. Then, using the cooling load prediction model and energy performance model of the chillers, a new control strategy was proposed to improve the energy performance under different oper-ating conditions throughout the year. Compared with previous operation modes in 2018 and 2019, the energy saving rates reached 19.21% and 5.22%, respectively, achieving considerable energy-saving and CO2 emission reduction effects.(c) 2023 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The chilled water system is the major component of HVAC systems, and it consumes a large amount of energy and has significant influence on the cooling effect. To save energy and provide a comfortable indoor environment, the energy performance of the chilled water system should be analyzed and improved. This paper introduces a systematic optimization process of the chilled water system in a high-rise office building. First, the influencing factors and their characteristics are summarized and analyzed, and the results show that higher temperature difference, energy efficiency of typical devices, and lower terminal resistance contribute to the improvement in energy performance. Then, based on the analysis, a systematic optimization method is put forward considering the external factors, internal factors, and synergies between them. Finally, an optimization of the studied building is conducted, from terminals to the chiller plant, and considerable energy saving effects are achieved on the premise of ensuring the indoor cooling demand. Abstract:Buildings consume about 20% of the total primary energy use in China. It is critical to enhancing building energy efficiency for sustainable development. The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems account for about half of the energy consumption in commercial buildings. For large commercial buildings, central chiller plants are typically used to provide chilled water for space cooling and consume lots of energy. This study evaluates the impacts of different chiller design and their operation strategy on the energy performance of central chiller plants. A case study is conducted using an office building located in Beijing, China. Feasible chiller combinations are studied based on 13 available chillers with different capacities. Four control strategies are explored, including three sequencing control strategies based on weekly, daily, and hourly maximum cooling loads and one optimal control strategy. A building energy model is created using DeST to simulate the hourly cooling load of the office building, and calibrated using the measured data. An integration model has been developed in MATLAB scripts to calculate the annual energy consumption of the chillers for each chiller design under each control strategy. The results indicate that it is essential to control the chiller plant hourly; however, the optimal control may not be necessary. It is not good to select the chillers with all the same capacity. The capacity of the chillers should be slightly different to provide flexibility for control. The design of the chiller combination is essential in the design stage. When bad combinations of chillers were designed, the performance of the chiller plant may be low even with optimization control strategies. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper,the coefficient of performance for refrigeration(COP_e) of air-conditioning water chillers in 28 existing high-rise complex office buildings in Shenzhen was investigated and studied.According to Design Standard for Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings(GB 50189-2005) and The Minimum Allowable Values of the Energy Efficiency and Energy Efficiency Grades for Water Chillers(GB 19577-2004),their design energy efficiency and energy-saving potential were analyzed.It was concluded that more than 20% water chillers should be removed immediately or recently,and energy efficiency level of the rest should be improved.Furthermore,for air-conditioning systems which had been built for more than 10 years with high energy consumption indices,the energy-efficient retrofit on cold source side should be carried out or chillers should be replaced with new ones after comprehensive consideration.

Abstract:Conventional chiller plants rely on human judgment or control, based on pressure and temperature variables for setting and adjusting component-operating status. However, these methods lack scientific, systematic, and optimal logic and results in imprecise operation and excessive energy consumption. This study proposes a new control model for chiller plant operation. The new model is built upon System Optimization Theory and based on actual cooling capacity for operating adjustment, and with performance, condition, and relevance of each component during actual operation. It also uses an actual case study to test model rationality and efficiency. Test results show that the new control model achieves better energy efficiency operations in the original chiller plant.

Abstract:The HVACs in super high-rise buildings commonly consists of variable air volume (VAV) systems, multistage chilled and cooling water systems, primary-secondary chilled water system in chiller plant, and the chillers combination is much more complex, leading to the significantly higher energy consumption than that of normal buildings. This paper contains field tests and comparative studies on the operation performance of HVACs in two super high-rise buildings and summarized representative issues accounting for the high energy consumption. Field test results showed that the annual energy efficiency of the whole HVAC system, before being commissioned, was only 1.79 and 2.15 in two projects. The HVACs, typically VAV systems, chilled and cooling water systems, all suffered from over-supplying and energy wasting. Besides, the chillers commonly operated with a low partial load ratio (PLR), whose energy performance was much lower than expected. Aiming to dig out the typical issues, analyses were carried out from external, internal factors, and their interconnection. Furthermore, optimization methods were put forward with corrected vital indexes. Results showed that proper control strategies should maintain the VAV system, multistage chilled and cooling water system operating with significant distribution temperature differences, tiny distribution pressure drops, and high energy efficiency, thus achieving energy saving and ensuring space cooling effects. Besides, the control strategies, especially the number control of chillers, were influential during the whole cooling season to ensure the chillers operate with optimal PLR and thus achieve better energy performance.

Abstract:Central air-conditioning systems account for the largest share of energy consumption in public buildings, wherein the chiller room is the main source. The current empirical strategies of chiller room group control have difficulty realizing integrity, timeliness, and equipment adjustment accuracy and lead to energy wastage. Therefore, the operation strategy optimization model is of great value for achieving energy savings. This study proposed a stepwise optimization method for central air-conditioning systems, which is divided into the chilled side (the chiller and chilled water pump) and the cooling side (the chiller, cooling water pump, and cooling tower). The optimal points of the two sides are calculated sequentially and integrated as the global optimization result. To construct the stepwise optimization model, mathematical power models of the equipment in use were established to provide mathematical support for objective functions, and a short-term load prediction model with a matching optimization step size was established for energy constraints. The TRNSYS simulation model was developed to verify the energy-saving effects of the stepwise optimization model according to the energy-saving rates of 6.41% and 13.56% attained in both cases. The stepwise optimization strategy can more effectively guide practical applications and provide another way of thinking with respect to the group control optimization of chiller rooms in public buildings.

Abstract:Tests the operation performances of the energy saving retrofit projects of centrifugal magnetic suspension water chillers in different cities.The results show that the average operation efficiency of centrifugal magnetic suspension water chillers in whole cooling season exceeds the highest efficiency values in the relevant national standards and is also far higher than the actual operation efficiency of screw water chillers or fixed speed centrifugal water chillers.However,centrifugal magnetic suspension water chillers have some problems in the practical applications,such as unequal load distribution of multiple water chillers,low efficiency under the part load conditions and high energy consumption of pumps in distribution systems.There is still a huge potential to increase system energy efficiency.

Abstract:In this study, the factors that influence the power consumption of a data center centralized-cooling system were investigated from both the indoor thermal environment and chilled water mass flow rate perspectives to maximize the free cooling utilization potential. First, a cooling load model is proposed and verified. Subsequently, based on a typical centralized-cooling system that combines free cooling devices and chillers, mathematical analyses were conducted on its thermal performance, considering different climate regions and heat dissipation densities related to the IT equipment. The results indicated that up to 83.5 % and 75.3 % of the annual cooling demand could be recovered by free cooling in Harbin and Beijing, respectively. However, during actual operations, this value is reduced because of the mixture of cold and hot air and inappropriate chilled water flow rates. To achieve the lowest annual or daily power consumption of the cooling system, the chilled water flow rates were optimized. Under optimal conditions, Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) can be improved by 4.5 to 30.6 % compared to the worst case scenario under discussion.

Abstract:In addressing the performance degradation issue of district cooling systems, although various evaluation methods exist, they either neglect design objectives or focus on independent equipment, overlooking the synergies between devices. Therefore, the study establishes a comprehensive performance assessment framework, encompassing efficiency, environmental impact, economic factors, and technological aspects. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy Weight Method are employed to determine the comprehensive weights for each indicator. In a specific case study, the operational status of an existing district cooling system is assessed, considering collaborative interactions among equipment. A fault tree analysis is applied to scrutinize 13 potential events contributing to system inefficiency and their logical relationships with relevant parameter variations. Based on these findings, specific optimization measures, such as check valve replacement and adjustments to pump and fan frequencies, are recommended. The performance of the optimized system is then re-evaluated, demonstrating substantial improvements with comprehensive performance scores increasing from 18.3 to 27.8 and 29.5, respectively.

Abstract:The high rates of electricity consumption in data centers become a worldwide concern. Water-side free cooling is an effective solution to reduce the energy consumed by the data center's cooling system. However, the water-side free cooling system is not well planned, and the free cooling utilization rate is low in different climate zone. Moreover, the effects of local climatic conditions on the optimal setting parameters have not been researched. In this study, the optimal setting in chilled water supply temperature, temperature difference, and chilled water return temperature is analyzed to enhance the efficiency of the free cooling system. We observed that the optimal setting could reduce annual energy consumption by 23.5%-60.8% in various climate zones and has substantial energy-saving potential in the subtropical highland climate zone. The results show that the optimal setting parameters are highly affected by the annual accumulative wet-bulb temperature distribution. Furthermore, considering a monthly analysis of these enhanced parameters, we proposed a dual-working condition cooling system for the data center's future construction. This research work guides the design of such cooling systems in various climate zones.
Optimization of a weather-based energy system for high cooling and low heating conditions using different types of water-cooled chiller

Abstract:A weather-based energy system consisting of a tri-generation unit, photovoltaics, and water-cooled chiller is proposed here for improving the energy and environmental performance. Together with capacities of other devices, the cooling ratio, and capacities of different types of chiller are optimized to find the ideal system configuration setting the energy and cost savings and renewable energy use as the objectives. In addition, daily and monthly operating modes with the optimal system composition are analyzed followed by a sensitivity analysis. The results show that increasing energy saving ratio improves the cost saving benefits, but the renewable energy penetration rate would decrease due to lower grid electricity consumption. The ideal system configuration in ratio optimization process has a higher gas turbine and chiller capacity resulting in higher performance than the system with capacity optimization process, or 2.7%, 1.6%, and 0.2%-unit higher of the considered indices. When increasing the specific cost of the chiller, cost saving ratio of the ideal system decreases, while the impacts on the energy savings and renewable energy use are lower. The analysis indicates that the price of grid electricity is the most sensitive factor, while the influence of carbon cost is slight.

Abstract:The emergence of building condenser water systems with all-variable speed pumps and tower fans allows for increased efficiency and flexibility of chiller plants in partial load operation but also increases the control complexity of condenser water systems. This study aims to develop an integrated modeling technique for evaluating and optimizing the energy performance of such a condenser water system. The proposed system model is based on the semi-physical semi-empirical chiller, pump, and cooling tower models, with capabilities of fully considering the hydraulic and thermal interactions in the condenser water loop, being solved analytically and much faster than iterative solvers and supporting the explicit optimization of the pump and tower fan frequency. A mathematical approach, based on the system model and constrained optimization technique, is subsequently established to evaluate the energy performance of a typical dual setpoint-based variable speed strategy and find its energy-saving potential and most efficient operation by jointly optimizing pumps and tower fans. An all-variable speed chiller plant from Wuhan, China, is used for a case study to validate the system model's accuracy and explore its applicability. The results showed that the system model can accurately simulate the condenser water system's performance under various operating conditions. By optimizing the frequencies of pumps and tower fans, the total system energy consumption can be reduced by 12%–13% compared to the fixed dual setpoint-based strategy with range and approach setpoints of 4 °C and 2 °C. In contrast, the energy-saving potential of optimizing the cooling tower sequencing is insignificant. A simple joint speed control method for optimizing the pumps and tower fans emerged, i.e., the optimal pump and fan frequency are linearly correlated (if both are non-extremes) and depend on the chiller part load ratio only, irrespective of the ambient wet-bulb temperature and chilled water supply temperature. It was also found that the oversizing issue has further limited the energy-saving space of the studied system and results in the range and approach setpoints being inaccessible. The study's findings can serve as references to the operation optimization of all-variable speed condenser water systems in the future.

This research paper concentrates on the study of high energy efficiency of the water chiller system. Based on two aspects of structure and algorithm, refined calculation and selection are carried out .It introduces a linkage control logic based on three adjustable main components (water pump, fan, and compressor).
