Abstract:The Puguang gas field is the largest gas field found in recent years. The estimated gravity anomalies of Puguang gas field based on the density of reservoir rock and cap rock are less than 1 mGal. However, the negative gravity anomalies are interfered by regional field and other rocks. The distinct negative density anomalies are obtained by the novel method which called apparent density inversion, based on the separation of potential fields by cutting method and much deeper downward continuation of fields. The negative density anomalies are also obtained from the gravity data of other gas fields in the northeast of Sichuan basin. The gas-prospective areas in northeast of Sichuan basin are predicted according to the results of apparent density inversion.

Abstract:The giant Puguang gas field, with a proven original in-place gas volume of 350 x 10(9) m(3) (12.3 6 TCFG), was discovered in 2003 in the eastern Sichuan fold-thrust belt of the mature Sichuan Basin, southwest China. The field is a combination structural-stratigraphic trap closed by lateral depositional change and fault closure. The trap evolved from a paleo-oil reservoir originating in the Triassic-Jurassic. The entrapment of thermal gas, which was derived from Lower-middle Silurian and Permian source rocks, occurred during deep burial in the Jurassic-Cretaceous. Tertiary-Quaternary compression transformed the paleotrap into the present gas reservoir. Gas is contained in the Lower Triassic Feixianguan and the Upper Permian Changxing reservoirs, which consist predominantly of dolomitized oolites deposited in shelf and platform-margin shoal and backreef environments. Reservoir quality is characterized by porosity of 1-29% and permeability of 0.01-9664 md, with buried depth greater than 5000 m (16,400 ft). The discovery of the Puguang field exemplifies the successful application of a new play concept and new technology in a mature basin. The discovery resulted from a shift in exploration strategy from structures to stratigraphic traps in reef and shoal dolomites and benefited from advanced high-resolution seismic techniques. The discovery will not only broaden the exploration scope in the Sichuan Basin, but also provide an excellent analog for exploration in other fold-thrust belts worldwide.

Abstract:The Puguang sour gas field in northeastern Sichuan Basin is the largest gas discovery in the Paleozoic marine strata in China, with at least 9 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of proven gas reserves. It is one of the many anticlinal structures formed during the Indo-Sinian orogeny, with gas being trapped in a composite structure–lithology pool. The presence of the Upper Permian coal measures, Lower Silurian and Lower Cambrian marine shales provided excellent hydrocarbon source rocks. The Lower Triassic and Upper Permian oolitic dolomites serve as high quality reservoir rocks, with 10–25% porosity and 1–1000mD permeability, largely due to diagenetically produced secondary porosity. The Lower and Middle Triassic evaporate beds have acted as the direct top seal for the large Lower Triassic–Upper Permian gas accumulation. The thick Upper Triassic and Jurassic mudstone beds regionally cap the underlying marine carbonate strata. The deep-seated basement faults acted as vertical hydrocarbon migration conduits during faulting, and became effective flow barriers when the faulting ceased. The deep burial of a paleo-oil accumulation in reservoirs rich in sulfate resulted in extensive thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). This, together with the new gas injection and structural reconfiguration, transformed a paleo-oil pool to a large sour gas pool.
Deep and ultra-deep natural gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin: Progress and prospect

Abstract:In recent years, major breakthroughs have been made in natural gas exploration in deep and ultra-deep strata in the Sichuan Basin, but the overall successful rate is low. To further clarify the prospects there, it is necessary to make an in-depth analysis of the previously discovered large-scale reef-shoal gas fields such as Puguang, Yuanba, Anyue and Longgang and deep shale gas discovery in Dingshan and Dongxi, southern Sichuan Basin. On one hand, large high-energy facies are the basis for controlling the development of large-scale reef-shoal reservoirs in conventional reef-shoal areas. The reservoir original porosity is high. The atmospheric freshwater dissolution in the early diagenetic stage, dolomitization, unconformity karst, and "pore–fracture coupling" mainly control the development of secondary pores. The contribution of hydrothermal fluids to reservoir is double-sided, and such early pores can be preserved till present due to those retention processes such as early hydrocarbon charging. Apart from continuous preservation as the key factor, most gas reservoirs are featured by "near-source enrichment, phase transformation, and dynamic adjustment". On the other hand, deep shale gas generally has the characteristics of "high pressure, high porosity, and high gas content", that is, "overpressure and rich gas". The key to the development of high-quality deep shales with high pores are "quartz compression retaining pore" and "reservoir fluid overpressure". The weak tectonic effect in the late stage is the main reason for deep shale gas to maintain the "high pressure and high gas content". In conclusion, technological advances like geological target identification and "sweet spot" prediction, as well as deep, high-temperature and high-pressure engineering processes, are the guarantee for efficient exploration of conventional and unconventional deep and ultra-deep natural gas, which has great potential in the Sichuan Basin.
Process and Mechanism for Oil and Gas Accumulation, Adjustment and Reconstruction in Puguang Gas Field, Northeast Sichuan Basin, China

Abstract:With the discoveries of a series of large gas fields in the northeast of Sichuan Basin, such as Puguang and Longgang gas fields, the formation mechanism of the gas reservoir containing high H2S in the ancient marine carbonate formation in superposition-basin becomes a hot topic in the field of petroleum geology. Based on the structure inversion, numerical simulation, and geochemical research, we show at least two intervals of fluid transfer in Puguang paleo-oil reservoir, one in the forepart of late Indo-Chinese epoch to early Yanshan epoch and the other in the metaphase of early Yanshan epoch. Oil and gas accumulation occurred at Puguang structure through Puguang-Dongyuezhai faults and dolomite beds in reef and shoal facies in Changxing Formation (P-2 ch) - Feixianguan Formation (T-1 f) in the northwest and southwest directions along three main migration pathways, to form Puguang paleo-oil reservoir. Since crude oil is pyrolysised in the early stage of middle Yanshan epoch, Puguang gas reservoir has experienced fluid adjusting process controlled by tectonic movement and geochemical reconstruction process controlled by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). Middle Yanshan epoch is the main period during which the Puguang gas reservoir experienced the geochemical reaction of TSR. On one hand, TSR can recreate the fluid in gas reservoir, which makes the gas drying index larger and carbon isotope heavier. On the other hand, the reciprocity between fluid regarding TSR (hydrocarbon, H2S, and water) and reservoir rock induces erosion of the reservoir rocks and anhydrite alteration, which improves reservoir petrophysical properties. Superimposed by later tectonic movement, the fluid in Puguang reservoir has twice experienced adjustment, one in the late Yanshan epoch to the early Himalayan epoch and the other time in late Himalayan epoch, after which Puguang gas reservoir is finally developed.

Abstract:The discovery of Puguang Gas Field should be attributed to the innovation of exploration ideas,geological understanding and the development of exploration technologies.By anatomizing the exploration history of Xuanhan-Daxian area,this paper analyzed the formation of structural-lithologic complex trap exploration strategy in Puguang area,expounded the new geological understanding of predictive models of deep-ultra deep high quality carbonate reservoirs and the technical ideas of complicated carbonate reservoir prediction.The discovery of Puguang Gas Field has contributed to the development of deep strata exploration in the Yuanba,Heba and the whole Sichuan Basin,and established the solid resources basis for the "Gas Pipeline from Sichuan to China Eastern Region" Project.

Abstract:Puguang Gas Field was discovered in 2003 in Sichuan Basin. It is the gas field that has the largest scale of reserves, the largest buried depth and highest reserves abundance. Till to the end of 2005, it has the proved gas reserves in-place of 251.07×109m3 and the gas trap in Dongyuzai-Puguang anticline covers an area of 45.6km2. Main gas-bearing reservoirs are Lower Triassic Feixianduan and Upper Permian Changxing reef-shoal facies dolostone. Hydrocarbon derived from Lower Silurian Longmaxi and Upper Permian Longtan sandy mudstone and shale. The discovery and exploration history of the field, geological characteristics of the gas reservoir and the exploration revelation to the carbonate reservoirs are revealed.

Abstract:The Puguang gas field recently discovered in the Sichuan basin is the largest and deepest gas pool, and of the greatest abundance in resource. Based on the course of exploration and discovery as well as the basic features of the field, the discovery of the field and its enlightenment for hydrocarbon prospecting have been summarized, that is, new thoughtways are needed for the exploration of mature basins, survey techniques are the guarantee for accelerating the exploration, and exploration risks can be effectively reduced by three-dimensional exploration for basins rich in hydrocarbon and with various types and complicate conditions of reservoir formation.

Abstract:The shifting of exploration target from structural traps to structural-lithologic traps(represented by dolomite reservoirs reef flat facies in Changxing-Feixianguan Formation of) led to the discovery of Puguang gas field-China's largest marine gas field so far.Based on 40 years of exploration achievements,the reef flat sedimentary model,'ternary reservoir controlling mechanism' concerning the deep carbonate reservoirs,and the 'compound reservoir controlling' model,are established by integrating the geological with seismic data.Breakthroughs are also made in the exploration of oolitic beach limestone in the third and fourth members of Feixianguan Formation and dolomite in the second member of Jialinjiang Formation in the periphery structures.Meanwhile,a theoretical system of gas pooling in deep marine carbonates is constructed,and a series of technologies aiming at integrated reservoir prediction are developed.New exploration achievements reveal that there are several potential exploration targets in the area and that Sichuan basin is an important area for future gas exploration.
Source Rocks for the Giant Puguang Gas Field,Sichuan Basin:Implication for Petroleum Exploration in Marine Sequences in South China

Abstract:Detailed geochemistry studies were conducted to investigate the origin of solid bitumens and hydrocarbon gases in the giant Puguang gas field.Two types of solid bitumens were recognized:low sulfur content,low reflectance（LSLR）solid bitumens in sandstone reservoirs in the Xujiahe Formation and high sulfur content,high reflectance（HSHR）solid bitumens in the carbonate reservoirs in the Lower Triassic Feixianguan and Upper Permian Changxing formations.Solid bitumens in the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation correlate well with extracts from the Upper Triassic to Jurassic non- marine source rocks in isotopic composition of the saturated and aromatic fractions and biomarker distribution.Solid bitumens in the Feixianguan and Changxing formations are distinctly different from extracts from the Cambrian and Silurian rocks but display reasonable correlation with extracts from the Upper Permian source rocks both in isotopic composition of the saturated and aromatic fractions and in biomarker distribution,suggesting that the Permian especially the Upper Permian Longtan Formation was the main source of solid bitumens in the carbonate reservoirs in the Feixianguan and Changxing formations in the Puguang gas field.Chemical and isotopic composition of natural gases indicates that the majority of hydrocarbon gases originated from sapropelic organic matter and was the products of thermal cracking of accumulated oils.This study indicates that source rock dominated by sapropelic organic matter existed in the Upper Permian and had made major contribution to the giant Puguang gas field,which has important implication for petroleum exploration in marine sequences in South China.
NEW PROGRESS ACHIEVED BY NATURAL GAS EXPLORATION IN SULIGE AREA

Abstract:Sulige area is situated in the western Yi-shaan slope of the Ordos Basin with an exploration area of 40,000 km2. From the latest study, three types of reservoirs have been discovered with sandstones formations well-developed especially at the Permian He-8 in this area, sand bodies carpet-like distributed with zonal lithofacies, and so the objective exploration should turn its forecast from sandbodies to gas pay zones, with a relatively high difficulty. The recent full-scale exploration has found a large gas field with the reserves of 10 TCM, and new discoveries in the western and the southern part respectively in the Sulige area. This paper points out that since there are good conditions for gas accumulation with a huge resource (as abundant as 2 TCM of the explored reserves) but a rather low degree of exploration in this area, the western part should be the next important zone for a large discovery; while the southern part should become a succeeding main zone for increasing the gas reserves of the whole Sulige area.

Abstract:The discovery of carbonate gas fields in the Middle Triassic Leikoupo Formation of the Sichuan Basin has a complex history. In recent years, a series of structural fields have been discovered in the western Sichuan Basin. Their discovery confirms the immense exploration potential of the Leikoupo Formation. In this study, we analyze the characteristics of Leikoupo Formation exploration plays using exploration wells and test data, aiming to provide a reference for further discoveries. The Leikoupo Formation represents the uppermost unit in the Sichuan marine carbonate platform succession. During its deposition, the whole basin was characterized by a restricted and evaporitic platform. Two classes of reservoirs developed. One is pore-fracture reservoirs, in marginal platform and intraplatform shoals, and another is fracture-vug reservoirs in the karstic weathering crust of the formation-capping unconformity. Three hydrocarbon accumulation models were established for the Leikoupo Formation based on the spatial and temporal relationship among the source, reservoir, and cap rocks. Two types of exploration plays are present in the Leikoupo Formation, that is, shoal (including intraplatform shoal and marginal platform shoal) dolomite plays and karstic dolomite weathering crust plays (including intraplatform shoal karst and marginal platform shoal karst). The western Sichuan depression in the karstic slope belt presents immense exploration potential because of a proximal hydrocarbon supply, charging via an extensive fracture network, shoals and karstic reservoir, a good seal rock of terrestrial mudstone, and potential composite hydrocarbon accumulations in stratigraphic traps, making it a promising area for future exploration.

Abstract:Northeastern Sichuan Basin is one of the most significant areas for natural gas exploration in China, and Puguang and Maoba are the two most important and typical gas fields there. The common characteristics of the natural gases in the Puguang and Maoba gas fields include extremely high dryness, high H2S contents, high delta C-13(1) values, with a wide range of delta C-13(2) values. Based on gas composition and stable carbon isotope values, natural gases in the study area are classified into three genetic groups, derived from type III kerogen, type II kerogen and those with a complex origin. The latter group is most likely the result of mixing between low maturity ethane inherited from earlier oil accumulation and high maturity methane generated from subsequent in-reservoir oil cracking and thermochemical sulfate reduction. In conjunction with regional source rock data, the Upper Permian Longtan Formation is considered to be the main source rock for the gases in the Feixianguan-Changxing reservoirs of the Puguang and Maoba gas fields.
Exploration status of the deep Sinian strata in the Sichuan Basin: Formation conditions of old giant carbonate oil/gas fields

Abstract:To construct a giant Sichuan gas province, it is in an urgent need of exploring new replacement areas with abundant natural gas resources and great exploration potential. In this paper, the formation conditions (e.g. source rock, reservoir and play) and the distribution laws of the deep-seated old giant marine carbonate oil/gas fields in China's Craton Basins were investigated systematically. Then, the accumulation and enrichment conditions of deep Sinian natural gas in the Sichuan Basin were analyzed. Finally, potential and favorable target zones of natural gas exploration in the Dengying Formation of Upper Sinian were evaluated. And the following research results were obtained. Firstly, the effectiveness and scale of source kitchens, reservoirs and reservoir–caprock assemblages and the proximity are the necessary conditions for the formation of deep-seated giant carbonate oil/gas fields, and paleo-uplifts, paleo-slopes and paleo-fault zones are the favorable areas of searching deep-seated giant carbonate oil/gas fields. Secondly, in the Sichuan Basin, three sets of high-quality source rocks are developed in the Neoproterozoic–Cambrian System, and their maturity of organic matter is still in the optimal window for cracking gas, so the gas generation scale is large. Thirdly, after the microbial carbonate rocks of Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin were reconstructed by constructive diagenesis, effective reservoirs are formed and distributed widely. Fourthly, owing to the integrated source rocks and cap rocks of Dengying Formation, the marginal platform and the intra platform have favorable conditions for proximal hydrocarbon accumulation. In conclusion, the deep Sinian in the Sichuan Basin has good conditions of hydrocarbon accumulation and it is an important replacement area of natural gas exploration. Paleo-uplifts and slopes in the central Sichuan Basin have been the favorable locations of natural gas accumulation for a long period. Large-scale exploration shall focus on four favorable areas, including the marginal platform zone in the fourth member of Dengying Formation, the marginal platform zone in the second member of Dengying Formation, the bioherm shoalbody of Dengying Formation intra platform in the paleo-uplifts and slopes of the central Sichuan Basin, and the bioherm shoalbody of Dengying Formation in the eastern Sichuan Basin.
Diagenesis and Restructuring Mechanism of Oil and Gas Reservoir in the Marine Carbonate Formation, Northeastern Sichuan: A Case Study of the Puguang Gas Reservoir

Abstract:Based on the technology of balanced cross-section and physical simulation experiments associated with natural gas geochemical characteristic analyses, core and thin section observations, it has been proven that the Puguang gas reservoir has experienced two periods of diagenesis and restructuring since the Late Indo-Chinese epoch. One is the fluid transfer controlled by the tectonic movement and the other is geochemical reconstruction controlled by thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The middle Yanshan epoch was the main period that the Puguang gas reservoir experienced the geochemical reaction of TSR. TSR can recreate the fluid in the gas reservoir, which makes the gas drying index higher and carbon isotope heavier because C2+ (ethane and heavy hydrocarbon) and 12C (carbon 12 isotope) is first consumed relative to CH4 and 13C (carbon 13 isotope). However, the reciprocity between fluid regarding TSR (hydrocarbon, sulfureted hydrogen (H2S), and water) and reservoir rock results in reservoir rock erosion and anhydrite alteration, which increases porosity in reservoir, thereby improving the petrophysical properties. Superimposed by later tectonic movement, the fluid in Puguang reservoir has twice experienced adjustment, one in the late Yanshan epoch to the early Himalayan epoch and the other time in late Himalayan epoch, after which Puguang gas reservoir is finally developed.
Geochemical characteristics and origin of natural gases from Xuanhan area, eastern Sichuan

Abstract:Based on the molecular and stable carbon isotope compositions of over 60 gas samples collected from more than 10 exploration wells,in combination with the analytical data of source rocks and reservoir bitumen,the geochemical characteristics and origin of gases mainly from the Puguang and Maobachang gas traps in Xuanhan area, eastern Sichuan, were investigated. The studied results indicated that the natural gases in the reservoirs of traps of Feixianguan-Changxing Formation belonged to dry gas with high amounts of H2S, and showed a molecular composition features of the gas cracking from oil previously reservoired in the traps. The gases were dominated by methane in hydrocarbon component with dryness index mostly more than 0.99, and contained abundant no-hydrocarbon components with CO2 and H2S average concentration being 5.32 and 11.95% respectively. The methane was isotopically heavy (-33‰ - -29‰), suggesting a high level of thermal maturity,and the δ13C values for ethane ranged mainly from -33‰ to -28‰ indicative of sapropelic organic source. The studied gases were believed to have a common source with the gases from same reservoir age strata in adjacent gas fields in the eastern Sichuan Basin, but different in origin with Carboniferous reservoired gases due to different molecular and carbon isotope compositions. The high concentration of H2S was considered to be derived from TSR on sulfur isotopes for sulfide and element compositions of reservoir bitumen. Sulfur isotopes revealed that the layered anhydrite was the reactant for TSR, whereas the anhydrite vein appeared to be derived from precipitation of the reactive fluid. It was noted that TSR and derived H2S abundance were possibly associated with the porosity type of their gas reservoirs. H2S in gases from fractured reservoirs was less significantly than one in gases from corroded reservoirs. The carbon isotope correlation between ethane,bitumen and source rock kerogens showed that the gases in the reservoirs of Feixianguan-Changxing Formation were mainly derived from the Permian strata.
Basic Characteristics and Concentration of the Puguang Gas Field in the Sichuan Basin

Abstract:The Puguang Field is the biggest and deepest gas field recently found in the Sichuan Basin of southern China with a proved gas reserve of 1144 × 10 8m 3 of the Feixianguan Formation reported to the National Mining Reserves Committee. Reserves of the three degree proved is 3500 × 10 8m 3. The reservoir rock of the Lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation is pure dolomite with oolitic dolomite and remnant oolitic dolomite. The reservoir has a high quality with medium to high porosity and permeability. The porosity may be related to the dissolution of deep thermal water. Closeness to the main hydrocarbon-producing sag, high-quality reservoir rock and timely uplifting are the favorable geological conditions to form this gas field.
“Exploring petroleum inside source kitchen”: Shale oil and gas in Sichuan Basin

Abstract:The Sichuan Basin is rich in shale oil and gas resources, with favorable geological conditions that the other shale reservoirs in China cannot match. Thus, the basin is an ideal option for fully "exploring petroleum inside source kitchen" with respect to onshore shale oil and gas in China. This paper analyzes the characteristics of shale oil and gas resources in the United States and China, and points out that maturity plays an important role in controlling shale oil and gas composition. US shale oil and gas exhibit high proportions of light hydrocarbon and wet gas, whereas Chinese marine and transitional shale gas is mainly dry gas and continental shale oil is generally heavy. A comprehensive geological study of shale oil and gas in the Sichuan Basin reveals findings with respect to the following three aspects. First, there are multiple sets of organic-rich shale reservoirs of three types in the basin, such as the Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation and Ordovician Wufeng Formation-Silurian Longmaxi Formation marine shale, Permian Longtan Formation transitional shale, Triassic Xujiahe Formation lake-swamp shale, and Jurassic lacustrine shale. Marine shale gas enrichment is mainly controlled by four elements: Deep-water shelf facies, moderate thermal evolution, calcium-rich and silicon-rich rock association, and closed roof/floor. Second, the "sweet section" is generally characterized by high total organic carbon, high gas content, large porosity, high brittle minerals content, high formation pressure, and the presence of lamellation/bedding and natural microfractures. Moreover, the "sweet area" is generally characterized by very thick organic-rich shale, moderate thermal evolution, good preservation conditions, and shallow burial depth, which are exemplified by the shale oil and gas in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, Longtan Formation, and Daanzhai Member of the Ziliujing Formation. Third, the marine, transitional, and continental shale oil and gas resources in the Sichuan Basin account for 50%, 25%, and 30% of the respective types of shale oil and gas geological resources in China, with great potential to become the cradle of the shale oil and gas industrial revolution in China. Following the "Conventional Daqing-Oil" (i.e., the Daqing oilfield in the Songliao Basin) and the "Western Daqing-Oil & Gas" (i.e., the Changqing oilfield in the Ordos Basin), the Southwest oil and gas field in the Sichuan Basin is expected to be built into a "Sichuan-Chongqing Daqing-Gas" in China.

Abstract:There are abundant marine shale gas resources in the Sichuan Basin. After almost one decade of exploration and development, three national shale gas demonstration areas have been built in the Sichuan Basin and its periphery, and large-scale commercial development of middle and deep (above 3500 m in depth) shale gas has been successfully achieved. The volume of deep shale gas resources (3500–4500 m deep) of the upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation-lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the southern Sichuan Basin is 6.6 × 10 12 m 3 , with huge exploration and exploitation potential, so it is an important area for large-scale shale gas production increase in China during the 14th Five-year Plan. Deep shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin is influenced by complex geological engineering conditions, such as great burial depth, high temperature and pressure, and large stress and stress difference, and its high-quality development faces many challenges. After systematically summarizing the new progresses and achievements in deep shale gas exploration and development in the southern Sichuan Basin, this paper analyzes the difficulties and challenges in deep shale gas exploration and development and puts forward the next research directions. And the following research results are obtained. First, based on early practical exploration and independent innovation, key shale gas exploration and development technologies with good area selection, good well deployment, good well drilling, good well fracturing and good well management as the core are formed, and the cultivation mode of high production well is established, which supports the large-scale benefit development of deep shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin. Second, systematical analysis indicates that the exploration and development of deep shale gas still faces a series of challenges in such three major fields as basic theory, key technology and management mode. Third, in the face of challenges, it is necessary to deepen basic theory research related to exploration and development, continuously improve key main technologies and constantly innovate mechanisms, systems and management modes. In conclusion, after years of continuous researches and pilot tests, a series of main exploration and development technologies suitable for the working conditions of deep shale gas in the southern Sichuan Basin have been basically formed, the first deep shale gas reserves of trillion cubic meters has been submitted, and the first deep shale gas production increase block of ten billion cubic meters has been selected. Thus, great progresses have been made in the exploration and development of deep shale gas, which confirms the confidence and determination in exploring and developing deep shale gas and is of great guiding significance to the rapid development of shale gas industry in China.

Abstract:The enrichment characteristics of deep shale gas in the Ordovician Wufeng–Silurian Longmaxi formations in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas are investigated through experiments under high temperature and high pressure, including petrophysical properties analyses, triaxial stress test and isothermal adsorption of methane experiment. (1) The deep shale reservoirs drop significantly in porosity and permeability compared with shallower shale reservoirs, and contain mainly free gas. (2) With higher deviatoric stress and axial strain, the deep shale reservoirs have higher difficulty fracturing. (3) Affected by structural location and morphology, fracture characteristics, geofluid activity stages and intensity, deep shale gas reservoirs have more complicated preservation conditions. (4) To achieve the commercial development of deep shale gas reservoirs, deepening geological understanding is the basis, and exploring reservoir simulation technology befitting the geological features is the key. (5) The siliceous shale and limestone-bearing siliceous shale in the Metabolograptus persculptus – Parakidograptus acuminatus zones (LM1–LM3 graptolite zones) are the high-production intervals for deep shale gas and the most favorable landing targets for horizontal drilling. Deeps water areas such as Jiaoshiba, Wulong, Luzhou and Changning with deep shale reservoirs over 10 m thickness are the most favorable areas for deep shale gas enrichment. It is recommended to carry out exploration and development practice in deep-water shale gas areas deposited deep with burial depth no more than 5000 m where the geological structure is simple and the shale thickness in the LM1–LM3 graptolite zone is greater than 10 m. It is better to increase the lateral length of horizontal wells, and apply techniques including high intensity of perforations, large volume of proppant, far-field and near-wellbore diversions to maximize the stimulated deep reservoir volume.
