Abstract:Rail-yard graphs are a general class of graphs introduced in \cite{bbccr} on which the random dimer coverings form Schur processes. We study asymptotic limits of random dimer coverings on rail yard graphs with free boundary conditions on both the left boundary and the right boundary (double-sided free boundary) when the mesh sizes of the graphs go to 0. Each dimer covering corresponds to a sequence of interlacing partitions starting with an arbitrary partition and ending in an arbitrary partition. Under the assumption that the probability of each dimer covering is proportional to the product of weights of present edges, we obtain the moment formula for the height function which includes an infinite product. By passing down to the scaling limit, we compute the limit shape (law of large numbers) of the rescaled height functions and prove the convergence of unrescaled height fluctuations to a diffeomorphic image of the restriction of the 0-boundary Gaussian free field (central limit theorem) on the upper half plane to a subset. Applications include the limit shape and height fluctuations for free boundary steep tilings as proposed in \cite{BCC17}. The technique to obtain these results is to analyze a class of Macdonald processes with dual specializations, subject to further complexities arising from the infinite product in the moment formula. We also obtain a new algorithm to sample double-sided free boundary dimer coverings on rail-yard graphs, which fulfills an open problem in \cite{bbbccv14}.

Abstract:In this work we study the variational problem associated to dimer models, a class of models from integrable probability and statistical mechanics in dimension two which have been the focus of intense research efforts over the last decades. These models give rise to an infinite family of non-differentiable functionals on Lipschitz functions with gradient constraint, determined by solutions of the Dirichlet problem on compact convex polygons for a class of Monge-Ampère equations. We settle a number or outstanding open questions for this infinite class functionals. In particular we prove a complete classification of the regularity of minimizers, also known as height functions, for all dimer models for a natural class of polygonal (simply or multiply connected) domains much studied in numerical simulations and elsewhere. Our classification in particular implies that the Pokrovsky-Talapov law holds for all dimer models at a generic point on the frozen boundary and in addition shows a very strong local rigidity of dimer models which can be interpreted as a geometric universality result. Furthermore, we give a complete classification of the regularity of the associated free boundary, also known in the literature as frozen boundary or arctic curves and prove that they are all algebraic curves. The lack of differentiability of the functionals is intimately connected to the boundary behaviour of the solutions to the Monge-Ampère equations and we prove a complete classification for these, of independent interest.

Abstract:We present a general approach for the study of dimer model limit shape problems via variational and integrable systems techniques. In particular we deduce the limit shape of the Aztec diamond and the hexagon for quasi-periodic weights through purely variational techniques. Putting an M-curve at the center of the construction allows one to define weights and algebro-geometric structures describing the behavior of the corresponding dimer model. We extend the quasi-periodic setup of our previous paper [7] to include a diffeomorphism from the spectral data to the liquid region of the dimer. Our novel method of proof is purely variational and exploits a duality between the dimer height function and its dual magnetic tension minimizer and applies to dimers with gas regions. We apply this to the Aztec diamond and hexagon domains to obtain explicit expressions for the complex structure of the liquid region of the dimer as well as the height function and its dual. We compute the weights and the limit shapes numerically using the Schottky uniformization technique. Simulations and predicted results match completely.

Abstract:In random tiling and dimer models we can get various limit shapes which gives the boundaries between different types of phases. The shape fluctuations at these boundaries give rise to universal limit laws, in particular the Airy process. We survey some models which can be analyzed in detail based on the fact that they are determinantal point processes with correlation kernels that can be computed. We also discuss which type of limit laws that can be obtained.

Abstract:We consider the dimer model on the square and hexagonal lattices with doubly periodic weights. The purpose of this paper is threefold: (a) we establish a rigourous connection with the massive SLE$_2$ constructed by Makarov and Smirnov (and recently revisited by Chelkak and Wan); (b) we show that the convergence takes place in arbitrary bounded domains subject to Temperleyan boundary conditions, and that the scaling limit is universal; and (c) we prove conformal covariance of the scaling limit. For this we introduce an inhomogeneous near-critical dimer model, corresponding to a drift for the underlying random walk which is a smoothly varying vector field or alternatively to an inhomogeneous mass profile. When the vector field derives from a log-convex potential we prove that the corresponding loop-erased random walk has a universal scaling limit. Our techniques rely on an exact discrete Girsanov identity on the triangular lattice which may be of independent interest. We complement our results by stating precise conjectures making connections to a generalised Sine-Gordon model at the free fermion point.

Large deviations for the 3D dimer model

Abstract:In 2000, Cohn, Kenyon and Propp studied uniformly random perfect matchings of large induced subgraphs of $\mathbb Z^2$ (a.k.a. dimer configurations or domino tilings) and developed a large deviation theory for the associated height functions. We establish similar results for large induced subgraphs of $\mathbb Z^3$. To formulate these results, recall that a perfect matching on a bipartite graph induces a flow that sends one unit of current from each even vertex to its odd partner. One can then subtract a "reference flow'' to obtain a divergence-free flow. We show that the flow induced by a uniformly random dimer configuration converges in law (when boundary conditions on a bounded $R \subset \mathbb R^3$ are controlled and the mesh size tends to zero) to the deterministic divergence-free flow $g$ on $R$ that maximizes $$\int_{R} \text{ent}(g(x)) \,dx$$ given the boundary data, where $\text{ent}(s)$ is the maximal specific entropy obtained by an ergodic Gibbs measure with mean current $s$. The function $\text{ent}$ is not known explicitly, but we prove that it is continuous and {\em strictly concave} on the octahedron $\mathcal O$ of possible mean currents (except on the edges of $\mathcal O$) which implies (under reasonable boundary conditions) that the maximizer is uniquely determined. We further establish two versions of a large deviation principle, using the integral above to quantify how exponentially unlikely the discrete random flows are to approximate other deterministic flows. The planar dimer model is mathematically rich and well-studied, but many of the most powerful tools do not seem readily adaptable to higher dimensions. Our analysis begins with a smaller set of tools, which include Hall's matching theorem, the ergodic theorem, non-intersecting-lattice-path formulations, and double-dimer cycle swaps.

Conformally invariant boundary arcs in double dimers

Abstract:We consider two different versions of the double dimer model on a planar domain, where we either fold a single dimer cover on a symmetric domain onto itself across the line of symmetry, or we superimpose two independent dimer covers on two, almost identical, domains that differ only on a certain portion of the boundary. This results in a collection of loops and doubled edges that, unlike in the classical double dimer case of Kenyon, are accompanied by arcs emanating from the line of symmetry or the chosen portion of the boundary. We argue that these arcs together with the associated height function satisfy a discrete version of the coupling of Qian and Werner between the Arc loop ensemble (ALE) and two different variants of the Gaussian free field (with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions). We also show that certain statistics of the arcs (when the loops are disregarded from the picture) converge to conformally invariant quantities in the small-mesh scaling limit, and moreover the limits are the same for the two versions of the model, and equal to the corresponding statistics of the arc loop ensemble (ALE). This gives evidence to the conjecture of [7] (that concerns one of these models).

Abstract:We investigate the percolation transition of aligned, overlapping, non-symmetrical shapes on lattices. Using the recently proposed lattice version of excluded volume theory, we show that shape-asymmetry leads to some intriguing consequences regarding the percolation behavior of asymmetric shapes. We consider a prototypical asymmetric shape - rectangle - on a square lattice and show that for rectangles of width unity (sticks), the percolation threshold is a monotonically decreasing function of the stick length, whereas, for rectangles of width greater than two, it is a monotonically increasing function. Interestingly, for rectangles of width two, the percolation threshold is independent of its length. The limiting case of the length of the rectangles going to infinity shows that the limiting threshold value is finite and depends upon the width of the rectangle. Unlike the case of symmetrical shapes like squares, there seems to be no continuum percolation problem that corresponds to this limit. We show that similar results hold for other asymmetric shapes and lattices. The critical properties of the aligned and overlapping rectangles are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the threshold values given by the lattice-excluded volume theory are in good agreement with the simulation results, especially for larger rectangles. We verify the isotropy of the percolation threshold and also compare our results with models where rectangles of mixed orientation are allowed. Our simulation results show that alignment increases the percolation threshold. The calculation of critical exponents places the model in the standard percolation universality class. Our results show that shape-anisotropy of the aligned, overlapping percolating units has a marked influence on the percolation properties, especially when a subset of the dimensions of the percolation units are made to diverge.

Geometry of the doubly periodic Aztec dimer model

Abstract:The purpose of the present work is to provide a detailed asymptotic analysis of the $k\times\ell$ doubly periodic Aztec diamond dimer model of growing size for any $k$ and $\ell$ and under mild conditions on the edge weights. We explicitly describe the limit shape and the 'arctic' curves that separate different phases, as well as prove the convergence of local fluctuations to the appropriate translation-invariant Gibbs measures away from the arctic curves. We also obtain a homeomorphism between the rough region and the amoeba of an associated Harnack curve, and illustrate, using this homeomorphism, how the geometry of the amoeba offers insight into various aspects of the geometry of the arctic curves. In particular, we determine the number of frozen and smooth regions and the number of cusps on the arctic curves. Our framework essentially relies on three somewhat distinct areas: (1) Wiener-Hopf factorization approach to computing dimer correlations; (2) Algebraic geometric `spectral' parameterization of periodic dimer models; and (3) Finite-gap theory of linearization of (nonlinear) integrable partial differential and difference equations on the Jacobians of the associated algebraic curves. In addition, in order to access desired asymptotic results we develop a novel approach to steepest descent analysis on Riemann surfaces via their amoebas.

Abstract:We study a translational invariant free fermions model in imaginary time, with nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor hopping terms, for a class of inhomogeneous boundary conditions. This model is known to give rise to limit shapes and arctic curves, in the absence of the next-nearest neighbor perturbation. The perturbation considered turns out to not be always positive, that is, the corresponding statistical mechanical model does not always have positive Boltzmann weights. We investigate how the density profile is affected by this nonpositive perturbation. We find that in some regions, the effects of the negative signs are suppressed, and renormalize to zero. However, depending on boundary conditions, new "crazy regions" emerge, in which minus signs proliferate, and the density of fermions is not in $[0,1]$ anymore. We provide a simple intuition for such behavior, and compute exactly the density profile both on the lattice and in the scaling limit.

Abstract:In this paper we aim to review some works on the asymptotic behaviors of random partitions. The focus is upon two basic probability models— uniform partitions and Plancherel partitions. One of fundamental results is the existence of limit shapes, which corresponds to the classic law of large numbers. The fluctuations around the limit shape are also considered; the well-known Gumbel distribution, Tracy-Widom distribution and normal distribution will be used to describe the asymptotic fluctuations at the edge and in the bulk of the spectrum of random partitions. The technique used in asymptotic analysis is the so-called poissonization and depoissonization method, a peculiar conditioning argument. We are content with describing some basic facts and remarkable results; no complete proof is given.
Dimers on Riemann surfaces and compactified free field

Abstract:We consider the dimer model on a bipartite graph embedded into a locally flat Riemann surface with conical singularities and satisfying certain geometric conditions in the spirit of the work of Chelkak, Laslier and Russkikh, see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.11871" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.11871">arXiv:2001.11871</a>. Following the approach developed by Dubédat in his work ["Dimers and families of Cauchy-Riemann operators I". In: J. Amer. Math. Soc. 28 (2015), pp. 1063-1167] we establish the convergence of dimer height fluctuations to the compactified free field in the small mesh size limit. This work is inspired by the series of works of Berestycki, Laslier, and Ray (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1908.00832" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1908.00832">arXiv:1908.00832</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2207.09875" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2207.09875">arXiv:2207.09875</a>), where a similar problem is addressed, and the convergence to a conformally invariant limit is established in the Temperlian setup, but the identification of the limit as the compactified free field is missing. This identification is the main result of our paper.

Exact finite-size corrections in the dimer model on a cylinder

Abstract:The exact finite-size corrections to the free energy $F$ of the dimer model on lattice $\mathcal{M} \times \mathcal{N}$ with cylindrical boundary conditions have been derived for three cases where the lattice is completely covered by dimers: $\mathcal{M} = 2M$, $\mathcal{N} = 2N$; $\mathcal{M} = 2M - 1$, $\mathcal{N} = 2N$; and $\mathcal{M} = 2M$, $\mathcal{N} = 2N - 1$. For these types of cylinders, ratios $r_p(\rho)$ of the $p$th coefficient of $F$ have been calculated for the infinitely long cylinder (${\mathcal M} \rightarrow \infty$) and infinitely long strip (${\mathcal N} \rightarrow \infty$) at varying aspect ratios. As in previous studies of the dimer model on the rectangular lattice with free boundary conditions and for the Ising model with Brascamp-Kunz boundary conditions, the limiting values $p \to \infty$ exhibit abrupt anomalous behaviour of ratios $r_p(\rho)$ at certain values of $\rho$. These critical values of $\rho$ and the limiting values of the finite-size expansion coefficient ratios vary between the different models.

Abstract:Let a random geometric graph be defined in the supercritical regime for the existence of a unique infinite connected component in Euclidean space. Consider the first-passage percolation model with independent and identically distributed random variables on the random infinite connected component. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of the asymptotic shape, and we show that the shape is a Euclidean ball. We give some examples exhibiting the result for Bernoulli percolation and the Richardson model. In the latter case we further show that it converges weakly to a nonstandard branching process in the joint limit of large intensities and slow passage times.

Double dimers on planar hyperbolic graphs via circle packings

Abstract:In this article we study the double dimer model on hyperbolic Temperleyan graphs via circle packings. We prove that on such graphs, the weak limit of the dimer model exists if and only if the removed black vertex from the boundary of the exhaustion converges to a point on the unit circle in the circle packing representation of the graph. One of our main results is that for such measures, we prove that the double dimer model has no bi-infinite path almost surely. Along the way we prove that the height function of the dimer model has double exponential tail and faces of height larger than k do not percolate for large enough k. The proof uses the connection between winding of uniform spanning trees and dimer heights, the notion of stationary random graphs, and the boundary theory of random walk on circle packings.

Abstract:We study nematic equilibria on rectangular domains, in a reduced two-dimensional Landau–de Gennes framework. These reduced equilibria carry over to the three-dimensional framework at a special temperature. There is one essential model variable, [Formula: see text], which is a geometry-dependent and material-dependent variable. We compute the limiting profiles exactly in two distinguished limits: the [Formula: see text] 0 limit relevant for macroscopic domains and the [Formula: see text] limit relevant for nanoscale domains. The limiting profile has line defects near the shorter edges in the [Formula: see text] limit, whereas we observe fractional point defects in the [Formula: see text] 0 limit. The analytical studies are complemented by some bifurcation diagrams for these reduced equilibria as a function of [Formula: see text] and the rectangular aspect ratio. We also introduce the concept of ‘non-trivial’ topologies and study the relaxation of non-trivial topologies to trivial topologies mediated via point and line defects, with potential consequences for non-equilibrium phenomena and switching dynamics.

Abstract:We study random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond with different weights for horizontal and vertical dominoes. A domino tiling of an Aztec diamond can also be described by a particle system which is a determinantal process. We give a relation between the correlation kernel for this process and the inverse Kasteleyn matrix of the Aztec diamond. This gives a formula for the inverse Kasteleyn matrix which generalizes a result of Helfgott. As an application, we investigate the asymptotics of the process formed by the southern dominoes close to the frozen boundary. We find that at the northern boundary, the southern domino process converges to a thinned Airy point process. At the southern boundary, the process of holes of the southern domino process converges to a multiple point process that we call the thickened Airy point process. We also study the convergence of the domino process in the unfrozen region to the limiting Gibbs measure.
