Abstract:Some regions and boundaries can be obtained after image segmentation.Usually, region of interest (ROI) is termed object and others background.The ultimate aim is to make a computer recognize these objects. To do this,description of object is necessary, that is to say,to provide some useful information and interact relationship. Comprehensive analyses of existing image description methods by means of three parts--region interior description, boundary description and relationship description are discussed in this paper.In the end,the future of image description methods is presented.
Shape Representation and Recognition in High Dimensional Feature Space

Abstract:We present a novel approach for shape representation using support vector domain description (SVDD). The shape contour of an object is mapped to spherical surface in high dimensional feature space, where similar contours with different size look like concentric spheres in the learned feature/kernel space. Shape matching in cluttered image, therefore, can be seen as finding the corresponding super spherical surface after the nonlinear transformation. The shape model, which consists of several Support Vectors (SVs), is partially invariant to contour scaling and rotation. A coarse-to-fine strategy is then adopted for shape matching in the forward matching process. Experimental results show that the approach is robust and suitable for shape-based image retrieval. In addition, our approach enables the user to fast construct the template shape by a small quantity of points which represent the shape roughly. The precise shape contour is not needed. It can greatly improve the human-machine interaction friendliness of practical image retrieval systems. Though our analysis is based on 2D shapes, this idea can be easily extended to the 3D shapes.
A new facial feature based on the fusion of texture and shape characteristics

Abstract:The original facial features can be mainly divided into two categories, texture characteristic and structure characteristic. Both of them have advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a new feature, which is fusion of texture and structure feature. A standard fiducial point detector is applied to locate five facial key points. The new feature will be generated adaptively by revising the gray value of pixel according to the distance to its relevant key point. The new feature involves geometric structure feature and information of key points, which is more robust than the original texture feature. Meanwhile, the five key points are beneficial to part-based face recognition. Experimental results show that the new feature can obtain 5% higher recognition rates than original texture features generally, and the improved part-based method, which combines the new feature and the face blocking, achieves recognition rates close to 100% in two different available databases.
Full and Partial Shape Similarity Through Sparse Descriptor Reconstruction

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach to measuring similarity between two shapes based on sparse reconstruction of shape descriptors. The main feature of our approach is its applicability in situations where either of the two shapes may have moderate to significant portions of its data missing. Let the two shapes be A and B. Without loss of generality, we characterize A by learning a sparse dictionary from its local descriptors. The similarity between A and B is defined by the error incurred when reconstructing B’s descriptor set using the basis signals from A’s dictionary. Benefits of using sparse dictionary learning and reconstruction are twofold. First, sparse dictionary learning reduces data redundancy and facilitates similarity computations. More importantly, the reconstruction error is expected to be small as long as B is similar to A, regardless of whether the similarity is full or partial. Our proposed approach achieves significant improvements over previous works when retrieving non-rigid shapes with missing data, and it is also comparable to state-of-the-art methods on the retrieval of complete non-rigid shapes.
A New Shape Descriptor For Object Recognition And Retrieval

Abstract:We present a. new shape descriptor for measuring the similarity between shapes and exploit it in graphical object recognition and retrieval. By statistically integrating the local length-ratio and angle constraints between contour points relative to the shape skeleton, we construct the shape descriptor capturing the global spatial distribution of the shape contour. Then, the dissimilarity between two shapes is computed as a weighted sum of matching errors between corresponding constraint histograms. Experimental results are presented for symbols and shapes data set, showing the effectiveness of our method.
Local Deep Feature Learning Framework for 3D Shape.

Abstract:For 3D shape analysis, an effective and efficient feature is the key to popularize its applications in 3D domain. In this paper, we present a novel framework to learn and extract local deep feature (LDF), which encodes multiple low-level descriptors and provides high-discriminative representation of local region on 3D shape. The framework consists of four main steps. First, several basic descriptors are calculated and encapsulated to generate geometric bag-of-words in order to make full use of the various basic descriptors׳ properties. Then 3D mesh is down-sampled to hundreds of feature points for accelerating the model learning. Next, in order to preserve the local geometric information and establish the relationships among points in a local area, the geometric bag-of-words are encoded into local geodesic-aware bag-of-features (LGA-BoF). However, the resulting feature is redundant, which leads to low discriminative and efficiency. Therefore, in the final step, we use deep belief networks (DBNs) to learn a model, and use it to generate the LDF, which is high-discriminative and effective for 3D shape applications. 3D shape correspondence and symmetry detection experiments compared with related feature descriptors are carried out on several datasets and shape recognition is also conducted, validating the proposed local deep feature learning framework.

Abstract:Following the feature‐based image matching pipeline, we provide a deep investigation into feature detection, description, and matching techniques. And we briefly introduce several representative methods with their mechanisms, scenarios of application, etc. Then we provide a comprehensive evaluation of these classical and latest methods by conducting extensive experiments on representative datasets. Feature matching plays a crucial role in computer vision, with applications in visual localization, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), image stitching, and more. It establishes correspondences between sets of feature points from multiple images, enabling various tasks. Over the years, feature matching has witnessed significant development, with an increasing number of methods being applied. However, different methods exhibit different degrees of applicability in different scenarios and requirements due to their different rationales. To cope with these issues, a comprehensive analysis and comparison of matching methods are essential. Existing reviews often lack coverage of deep learning models and focus more on feature detection and description, neglecting the matching process. This survey investigates feature detection, description, and matching techniques within the feature‐based image‐matching pipeline. Representative methods, their mechanisms, and application scenarios are also briefly introduced. In addition, comprehensive evaluations of classical and state‐of‐the‐art methods are conducted through extensive experiments on representative datasets. Particularly, matching‐based applications are compared to fully demonstrate the advantages of the methods. Lastly, this survey highlights current problems and development directions in matching methods, serving as a reference for researchers in the field.

Local Feature Descriptor for Image Matching: A Survey

Abstract:Image registration is an important technique in many computer vision applications such as image fusion, image retrieval, object tracking, face recognition, change detection and so on. Local feature descriptors, i.e., how to detect features and how to describe them, play a fundamental and important role in image registration process, which directly influence the accuracy and robustness of image registration. This paper mainly focuses on the variety of local feature descriptors including some theoretical research, mathematical models, and methods or algorithms along with their applications in the context of image registration. The existing local feature descriptors are roughly classified into six categories to demonstrate and analyze comprehensively their own advantages. The current and future challenges of local feature descriptors are discussed. The major goal of the paper is to present a unique survey of the state-of-the-art image matching methods based on feature descriptor, from which future research may benefit.

Envelope extraction for composite shapes for shape retrieval

Abstract:Analysis of composite shapes recently receives increasing amount of research attention. Different from a silhouette, a composite shape rarely contains a complete envelope. In the paper, we propose a novel envelope extraction algorithm based on the Delaunay triangulation for composite shapes. By analyzing the spatial relationship among individual components of contours and their concavities, we establish new models to describe the envelope edges and their corresponding local enclosed regions. These new models are then used to extract accurate envelopes for composite shapes. We then apply the extracted envelopes to improve shape classification used in shape retrieval. The experimental results show that our algorithm effectively boosts existing shape retrieval algorithms.
A Unified Feature Representation and Learning Framework for 3D Shape

Abstract:In conventional 3D shape retrieval and classification, they differentiate each other in their final stages. We propose a unified feature representation and learning framework for the instance-based shape retrieval and classification. Firstly, we render every 3D model in several directions and use the produced view-sets to represent the 3D models. In this way, both tasks can be tackled by measuring the distances between rendered views of 3D models. Secondly, we construct the viewsets as Symmetric positive definite matrices（SPDMs）,which are points on a Riemannian manifold. Thus, the shape retrieval and classification tasks are reduced to a problem of measuring the distances between projected views and SPDMs. To solve this heterogeneous problem,we map them to a Hilbert space using a method of point-to-set matching. In this Hilbert space, the distances are surprisingly easy to calculate. Finally, we use a robust nearest-neighbor approach to unify the instancebased shape retrieval and classification. Our framework combines the state-of-the-art deep learning approaches with traditional mathematical optimization method, makes full use of both advantages, which is much more flexible than pure deep learning methods. Experimental results show the efficiency of our approach.
A Survey on Partial Retrieval of 3D Shapes

Abstract:Content-based shape retrieval techniques can facilitate 3D model resource reuse, 3D model modeling, object recognition, and 3D content classification.Recently more and more researchers have attempted to solve the problems of partial retrieval in the domain of computer graphics, vision, CAD, and multimedia.Unfortunately, in the literature, there is little comprehensive discussion on the state-of-the-art methods of partial shape retrieval.In this article we focus on reviewing the partial shape retrieval methods over the last decade, and help novices to grasp latest developments in this field.We first give the definition of partial retrieval and discuss its desirable capabilities.Secondly, we classify the existing methods on partial shape retrieval into three classes by several criteria, describe the main ideas and techniques for each class, and detailedly compare their advantages and limits.We also present several relevant 3D datasets and corresponding evaluation metrics, which are necessary for evaluating partial retrieval performance.Finally, we discuss possible research directions to address partial shape retrieval.
A Survey on Facial Features Localization

Abstract:Facial features localization, an important technique in human face analyzing, is specialized in searching for facial features (eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc) within a given region in an image or image sequence. It finds applications in various areas, such as face detection, face recognition, gesture recognition, expression recognition, face image compression and reconstruction, face cartoon, etc. This paper attempts to give an overview of the latest development in this field by classifying the newly proposed methods into five categories, namely the ones based on knowledge, geometry information, color, appearance and relative location. All these methods appeared in related papers or works published on international, as well as Chinese, journals and conferences in recent years. Then their performances in accurate rate, robustness and computational expense are roughly estimated and compared while some discussions about the criteria on which the estimation and comparison bases are provided. At the end of this paper, a prospect of the future development in this field is presented based on the observation of how an effective face feature location system should be build.
Learning Contour-Based Mid-Level Representation for Shape Classification

Abstract:This article proposes a novel contour-based mid-level shape description method for shape classification. This method resolves the shortcomings of low-level shape descriptors in dealing with the shapes of objects with large intra-class changes and non-linear deformation (articulation, occlusion and noise), thus improving the accuracy of shape classification. First, we extract the outer contour of an object and sample it. We next describe each sampling point on the shape contour with a triangular feature and regard it as a local feature. Then, a shape codebook is learned, and the Fisher vector encoding method is used to produce a compact mid-level shape feature. Finally, the learned mid-level shape features are sent to the linear support vector machine (SVM) classifier for shape recognition. The proposed method has been extensively tested on several standard shape datasets, and the experimental results show that our approach attains high accuracy of shape classification. Comparisons to other state-of-the-art shape classification approaches further prove the superiority and effectiveness of our method.
Data Driven Composite Shape Descriptor Design for Shape Retrieval with a VoR-Tree

Abstract:We develop a data driven method（probability model） to construct a composite shape descriptor by combining a pair of scale-based shape descriptors. The selection of a pair of scale-based shape descriptors is modeled as the computation of the union of two events, i.e.,retrieving similar shapes by using a single scale-based shape descriptor. The pair of scale-based shape descriptors with the highest probability forms the composite shape descriptor. Given a shape database, the composite shape descriptors for the shapes constitute a planar point set.A VoR-Tree of the planar point set is then used as an indexing structure for efficient query operation. Experiments and comparisons show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed composite shape descriptor.

Abstract:We associate a contour point with an object thickness value.We propose a new descriptor to combine both contour and skeleton information.Our method achieves the state-of-the-arts results on several shape dataset. Contour and skeleton are two complementary representations for shape recognition. However combining them in a principal way is nontrivial, as they are generally abstracted by different structures (closed string vs graph), respectively. This paper aims at addressing the shape recognition problem by combining contour and skeleton according to the correspondence between them. The correspondence provides a straightforward way to associate skeletal information with a shape contour. More specifically, we propose a new shape descriptor, named Skeleton-associated Shape Context (SSC), which captures the features of a contour fragment associated with skeletal information. Benefited from the association, the proposed shape descriptor provides the complementary geometric information from both contour and skeleton parts, including the spatial distribution and the thickness change along the shape part. To form a meaningful shape feature vector for an overall shape, the Bag of Features framework is applied to the SSC descriptors extracted from it. Finally, the shape feature vector is fed into a linear SVM classifier to recognize the shape. The encouraging experimental results demonstrate that the proposed way to combine contour and skeleton is effective for shape recognition, which achieves the state-of-the-art performances on several standard shape benchmarks.
A Comparative Study of Three Shape Normalization Algorithms

Abstract:Shape is one of the fundamental visual features in pattern recognition and target tracking. And shape normalization is a very important pre-processing step in image understanding. In general, there are four basic forms of planar shape distortions caused by changes in viewer's location: translation, rotation, scaling and skewing. A good shape descriptor should be invariant to these distortions. In this paper, we study and compare three shape normalization algorithms: J.G. Leu's shape compacting algorithm and its two modified versions: Wang's image ellipse algorithm and Liang J.J.'s principal axis algorithm. Experiments on a set of images show that all of these algorithms have some drawbacks and we give some advices for modification.

Abstract:In this paper the deformation invariant curve matching problem is addressed. The proposed approach exploits an image pyramid to constrain correspondence search at a finer level with those at a coarser level. In comparison to previous methods, this approach conveys much richer information: curve topology, affine geometry and local intensity are combined together to seek correspondences. In experiments, the method is tested in two applications, contour matching and shape recognition, and the results show that the approach is effective under perspective and articulated deformations.
Shape Topics: A Compact Representation and New Algorithms for 3D Partial Shape Retrieval

Abstract:This paper develops an efficient new method for 3D partial shape retrieval. First, a Monte Carlo sampling strategy is employed to extract local shape signatures from each 3D model. After vector quantization, these features are represented by using a bag-of-words model. The main contributions of this paper are threefold as follows: 1) a partial shape dissimilarity measure is proposed to rank shapes according to their distances to the input query, without using any timeconsuming alignment procedure; 2) by applying the probabilistic text analysis technique, a highly compact representation "Shape Topics" and accompanying algorithms are developed for efficient 3D partial shape retrieval, the mapping from "Shape Topics" to "object categories" is established using multi-class SVMs; and 3) a method for evaluating the performance of partial shape retrieval is proposed and tested. To our best knowledge, very few existing methods are able to perform well online partial shape retrieval for large 3D shape repositories. Our experimental results are expected to validate the efficacy and effectiveness of our novel approach.
