Abstract:Asymptotic analysis based on the fluids governing equations with the exponential model of thermophysical properties is introduced to quantify the influence of each property on the heat and mass transfer behavior of the near-critical fluid. The one-dimensional asymptotic model finds the different behavior in boundary layers and bulk regions controlled by the diffusion and wave mode, respectively. From the asymptotic model, three characteristic parameters are found: nondimensional wave velocity for wave mode, nondimensional diffusion coefficient for diffusion mode, and nondimensional mass transport coefficient for the coupling in between. Larger thermal conductivity, fluid compressibility, and lower specific heat are found to enhance the thermal wave. However, the efficiency of heat transfer by thermal waves is irrelevant to the thermal diffusivity but related to the fluid compressibility. From the calculation of the asymptotic model for supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ), such efficiency is 0.150, which indicates that most of the thermal energy is accumulated in the boundary layers.

Abstract:An asymptotic local solution to the axisymmetric conduction problem with a discontinuous temperature boundary condition in the radial direction is presented. The Laplace's equation in cylindrical coordinates (r, z) is expanded near the discontinuity at r = 1, z = 0. The leading order term arises from the step-change in the boundary condition. The next term reflects the effect of curvature at the position of the temperature discontinuity and is a particular solution to the Poisson's equation. Subsequent higher-order terms involve general solutions to the Laplace's equation in Cartesian coordinates and depend on conditions on the far end boundaries. Three domain sizes are thus considered: (i) infinite solid cylinder (0 <= r < infinity, 0 <= z < infinity); (ii) semi-infinite solid cylinder with finite radius (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z < infinity); and (iii) finite solid cylinder (0 <= r <= a, 0 <= z <= a). Exact solutions for temperature in those three cases are used to determine the coefficients in the higher order terms of the asymptotic solution. As a result, a simple expression for local normal wall heat flux near the discontinuity is obtained and the accuracy is confirmed by comparing with the heat flux obtained through high order extrapolation of the exact temperature field near the wall. Abstract:Axisymmetric analogue is a reliable and effective method of aerothermal heating calculating for non-axisymmetric flowfield.According to traditional method,metrics along streamlines are gained in cylindrical coordinates system and the iteration process is very complex.A new axisymmetric analogue,calculating metric directly in rectangular coordinate system,was introduced and the process is greatly simplified.An improved streamline trace method was applied to increase the calculating efficiency.Surface heating of a spherically blunted cone and a twin-ellipsoid configuration were calculated and the results accorded well with experimental data and CFD solutions both in the stage region and the surface distribution.Additionally,the computational efficiency is much higher than direct numerical method.

Abstract:The convection phenomena in two-layer liquid systems have attracted great attention in the past two decades, mainly owing to their relevance in nature and in many engineering applications. Many works have been carried out to investigate the thermocapillary convection in two-layer liquid systems in rectangular cavities or in infinite horizontal layers. However, few studies focused on the convection phenomena in two-layer liquid systems in the annular cavity. In order to understand the basic characteristics of thermocapillary convection of the thin two superposed horizontal liquid layers subjected to a radial temperature gradient in an annular cavity, an approximate analytical solution is obtained using asymptotical analysis. The cavity is heated from the outer cylindrical wall and cooled at the inner wall. Bottom and top surfaces are adiabatic. Results show that the expressions of velocity and temperature field in the core region are the same as the results obtained by Nepomnyashchy et al (Physics of Fluids, 2006, 18: 032105) when thin annular pool approaches to thin two-dimensional slot. The numerical experiments are also carried out to compare with the asymptotic solution. It is found that there is a good agreement between the asymptotic solution and numerical result in the core region.

Abstract:The time evolution of a two-dimensional line thermal-a turbulent flow produced by an initial element with significant buoyancy released in a large water body, is numerically studied with the two-equation k - epsilon model for turbulence closure. The numerical results show that the thermal is characterized by a vortex pair flow and a kidney shaped concentration structure with double peak maxima; the computed flow details and scalar mixing characteristics can be described by self-similar relations beyond a dimensionless time around 10. There are two regions in the flow field of a line thermal: a mixing region where the concentration of tracer fluid is high and the flow is turbulent and rotational with a pair of vortex eyes, and an ambient region where the concentration is zero and the flow is potential and well-described by a model of doublet with strength very close to those given by early experimental and analytical studies. The added virtual mass coefficient of the thermal motion is found to be approximately 1. The aspect ratio for the kidney-shaped sectional thermal is found to be around 1.45 for the self-similar phase. The predicted thermal spreading and mixing rate compares well with experimental data.

Abstract:In this work, we find that a free axisymmetric jet in air displays self-similarity in the fully developed part of the jet ( ≳30 jet exit diameters from the jet exit). We report accurate measurements of first, second, and third order spatially averaged statistical functions of the axial velocity component performed with a laser Doppler anemometer, including the outer (high intensity, ≳20% ) regions of the jet. The measurements are compared to predictions derived from a simple jet model, which is described in a separate publication, and we discuss the implications for the further study of self-similarity in a free jet. It appears that all statistical functions included in this study can be scaled with a single geometrical scaling factor—the downstream distance from a common virtual origin, z−z0 .

Abstract:The core idea of similarity theory is to use the scaled model to replace prototype for equivalent experiments, to obtain approximate solutions to the research problems based on saving research costs. The major goal of this work is to propose a new steady-state heat transfer similarity theory based on dimensional analysis and construct a heat transfer model that can be used for low-speed, small-scale target heat transfer experiments. This theory comprehensively considers geometric similarity, flow similarity, heat transfer similarity and optical similarity, providing an innovative theoretical basis for heat transfer shrinkage experiments. In addition, it has higher applicability and scalability when facing complex heat transfer experiments. The results showed that, Although the experiments in this article have certain environmental errors and systematic errors, the theory and model still show extremely high heat transfer prediction accuracy in numerical simulations and experiments. The maximum value of the intra-group relative temperature errors during numerical simulation does not even exceed 1% and the mean value is within 0.5%.

Abstract:In this brief report, a thermal lattice-Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for axisymmetric thermal flows in the incompressible limit. The model is based on the double-distribution-function LB method, which has attracted much attention since its emergence for its excellent numerical stability. Compared with the existing axisymmetric thermal LB models, the present model is simpler and retains the inherent features of the standard LB method. Numerical simulations are carried out for the thermally developing laminar flows in circular ducts and the natural convection in an annulus between two coaxial vertical cylinders. The Nusselt number obtained from the simulations agrees well with the analytical solutions and/or the results reported in previous studies.

Abstract:Full-scale test for turbine blade internal cooling is difficult for laboratory researches. The original turbine blade channel is always proportionally scaled up to laboratory-scale channel, as well as its hydraulic diameter and rotating radius. But the proportion scale of radius is too large for any rotating rig to operate the test, and thus the insufficient rotating radius causes incomplete similarity application. Because of the dissimilar radius induced incomplete similarity, heat transfer results obtained in laboratory-scale channel cannot be directly used by actual turbine blade design process. Therefore, this paper deals with this problem and numerically studies the influence of incomplete similarity through a rotating square channel with smooth walls and radially outward flow.Dimensionless parameters analysis demonstrates that the radius ratio (RID) only shows influence on the buoyancy number (Buo) which causes much smaller buoyancy number for dissimilar model. Thus, three models with various scales and rotating radius are built. Model 1 is the original channel simplified from actual turbine blade internal cooling channel; Model 2 (similar model) and Model 3 (experimental model) are the corresponding scaled-up channels from Model 1 with complete similar radius and insufficient radius respectively. And two correction methods (variable radius and variable wall temperature) are developed to revise the influence caused by incomplete similarity of Model 3. Variable radius is used to vary rotating radius and variable wall temperature is used to vary wall temperature. The simulation is completed using commercial CFD solver and k-omega turbulent model.Result shows that the conventional application of similarity theory can predict heat transfer well for complete similar model (Model 2), but with a large deviation for dissimilar model (Mode 3). Given the same Re and Ro, the smaller Buo in Model 3 causes over 17% deviation heat transfer result. Then, the two revised methods concerning the effect of rotational radius ratio and wall temperature ratio are detailedly discussed, and both of them show less than 3% deviation in heat transfer distribution results. Self-similar asymptotics for a class of Hele-Shaw flows driven solely by surface tension

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of relaxation, by surface tension, of a family of curved interfaces between an inviscid and viscous fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell. At t=0 the interface is assumed to be of the form |y|=A x^m, where A>0, m \geq 0, and x>0. The case of 0<m<1 corresponds to a smooth shape, m>1 corresponds to a cusp, whereas m=1 corresponds to a wedge. The inviscid fluid tip retreats in the process of relaxation, forming a lobe which size grows with time. Combining analytical and numerical methods we find that, for any m, the relaxation dynamics exhibit self-similar behavior. For m\neq 1 this behavior arises as an intermediate asymptotics: at late times for 0\leq m<1, and at early times for m>1. In both cases the retreat distance and the lobe size exhibit power law behaviors in time with different dynamic exponents, uniquely determined by the value of m. In the special case of m=1 (the wedge) the similarity is exact and holds for the whole interface at all times t>0, while the two dynamic exponents merge to become 1/3. Surprisingly, when m\neq 1, the interface shape, rescaled to the local maximum elevation of the interface, turns out to be universal (that is, independent of m) in the similarity region. Even more remarkably, the same rescaled interface shape emerges in the case of m=1 in the limit of zero wedge angle.

Abstract:Abnormal transport phenomena are generally found in supercritical fluids heat transfer due to their unique thermophysical properties on the gas–liquid critical point. In the vicinity of the critical point, static or transport properties of fluids can be scaled by the critical exponents along any thermal path being defined. In this work, with such scaling on the critical isochore, the asymptotic technique is applied to investigate the behavior of the near-critical fluids by studying the response to the thermal perturbation in the acoustic time scale. The full asymptotic governing equations are found in both non-viscous and viscous cases that describe the wave mode in bulk and diffusion mode in the boundary layer. The analytical solutions for the mass transport correlation demonstrate the direct bond between the wave mode and boundary conditions regardless of the motion of boundary layers in both heating and cooling cases. Such correlation shows the asymptotic behavior characterized by exponent −0.5 α - x L = −0.625. Thus, the thermal waves that cause cooling and heating, respectively, can coexist and propagate independently due to the one-to-one bonding with respective boundaries (wave sources). This bonding is still valid even if the enlarged viscosity hinders the fluid flow out of the boundary layers. The viscosity leads to the extra pressure work, whose asymptotic behavior follows the exponent −0.5 α - x b = −1.875, to overcome the viscous stress as the boundary layers expand.

Abstract:We report an experimental study of flow dynamics and structure in turbulent thermal convection. Flow visualization, together with particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement, reveal that the instantaneous flow structure consists of an elliptical circulatory roll and two smaller counterrotating rolls, and that the azimuthal motion of the quasi-2D instantaneous flow structure produces a time-averaged 3D flow pattern featuring two toroidal rings near the top and bottom plates, respectively. The apparently stochastic azimuthal motion of the flow structure, which generates a net rotation on average, is found to possess the characters of a Brownian ratchet. Using an artificially generated flow mode, we are able to produce a bimodal-Nu behavior and thus demonstrate that different flow states can indeed produce different global heat transport in a turbulent convection system.
Asymptotics of self-similar solutions to coagulation equations with product kernel

Abstract:We consider mass-conserving self-similar solutions for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with kernel $K(\xi,\eta)= (\xi \eta)^{\lambda}$ with $\lambda \in (0,1/2)$. It is known that such self-similar solutions $g(x)$ satisfy that $x^{-1+2\lambda} g(x)$ is bounded above and below as $x \to 0$. In this paper we describe in detail via formal asymptotics the qualitative behavior of a suitably rescaled function $h(x)=h_{\lambda} x^{-1+2\lambda} g(x)$ in the limit $\lambda \to 0$. It turns out that $h \sim 1+ C x^{\lambda/2} \cos(\sqrt{\lambda} \log x)$ as $x \to 0$. As $x$ becomes larger $h$ develops peaks of height $1/\lambda$ that are separated by large regions where $h$ is small. Finally, $h$ converges to zero exponentially fast as $x \to \infty$. Our analysis is based on different approximations of a nonlocal operator, that reduces the original equation in certain regimes to a system of ODE.

Abstract:In this paper we give analytical similarity solutions of the Navier–Stokes equations coupled with energy equation of Newtonian fluid in a microchannel between two parallel plates taking into account the effects of viscous dissipation, the velocity slip and the temperature jump at the wall. Two different thermal boundary conditions are considered: the constant heat flux (CHF) and the constant wall temperature (CWT). We provide new similarity transformations for the governing equations and derive the expressions of Poiseuille number (Po) and Nusselt number (Nu). Then, the homotopy analysis method (HAM) is employed to solve the nonlinear differential equations with related boundary conditions. Both the dimensionless analytical expressions of velocity and temperature are obtained. The rarefaction effects on velocity distribution and flow friction are exhibited. The interactive effects of the Brinkman number (Br) and the Knudsen number (Kn) on Nu are analytically studied for both the CHF and CWT cases.

Abstract:From the hydrodynamic and heat transfer governing equations of the flight derived the similarity criteria about the external flow field and internal heat transfer. On the basis of the existing aerodynamic similarity criteria, added the heat transfer similarity criteria under the complex coupling boundary of thermal conduction, radiation and convection. Considering the external and internal coupling heat transfer, the aerodynamic/thermal coupling similarity conditions under different working conditions were established and verified. The average relative errors between the results in aerodynamic calculations of the scaled model which are established by the similarity theory and the real aircraft model are less than 0.5%, and those between the models in the coupling heat transfer calculations are less than 1%. The results show that the similarity criteria obtained has great accuracy and feasibility, and can be used to guide the ground test of the aircraft.
Thermalization in One-Dimensional Chains: the Role of Asymmetry and Nonlinearity

Abstract:The symmetry of interparticle interaction potential (IIP) has a crucial influence on the thermodynamic and transport properties of solids. Here we focus on the effect of the asymmetry of IIP on thermalization properties. In general, asymmetry and nonlinearity interweave with each other. To explore the effects of asymmetry and nonlinearity on thermalization separately, we here introduce an asymmetric harmonic (AH) model, whose IIP has the only asymmetry but no nonlinearity in the sense that the frequency of a system is independent of input energy. Through extensive numerical simulations, a power-law relationship between the thermalization time T_ eq and the perturbation strength (here the degree of asymmetry) is still confirmed, yet a larger exponent is observed instead of the previously found inverse square law in the thermodynamic limit. Then the quartic (symmetric) nonlinearity is added into the AH model, and the thermalization behavior under the coexistence of asymmetry and nonlinearity is systematically studied. It is found that Matthiessen's rule gives a better estimation of the T_ eq of the system. This work further suggests that the asymmetry plays a distinctive role in the properties of relaxation of a system.
