Abstract:We first explain problems with the default scheduler used by the Linux kernel MPTCP implementation. Then we propose the design of a new scheduler. Preliminary empirical results show that our proposed scheduler improves the throughput in MPTCP by alleviating the problems caused by the default scheduler.

Abstract:Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is considered as a promising protocol that enables multi-homed terminals with multiple interfaces, to transmit data concurrently through all the available paths in heterogeneous wireless networks. However, the dissimilar characteristics among different paths may cause the out-of-order problem at the receiver with limited receiving buffer, which will significantly degrade the overall throughput. Many packet scheduling schemes for MPTCP have been proposed to keep data in-order delivery, but most of them only consider the path latency, ignoring the bandwidth and packet loss rate. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic packet scheduling method for MPTCP. We first use a low-complexity way to estimate the packets sent on other paths concurrently, taking both the bandwidth and packet loss rate into consideration, then modify the scheduling value with the feedback information. Simulation results show that our method can enhance the overall throughput and reduce the unordered packets at the receiver.

Abstract:Multipath TCP enables remarkable optimizations for throughput, load balancing, and mobility in today's networks. The design space of Multipath TCP scheduling, i.e., the application-aware mapping of packets to paths, is largely unexplored due to its inherent complexity. Evidence in this paper suggests that an application-aware scheduling decision, if leveraged right, pushes Multipath TCP beyond throughput optimization and thereby provides benefits for a wide range of applications. This paper introduces a high-level programming model that enables application-defined Multipath TCP scheduling. We provide an efficient interpreter and eBPF-based runtime environment for the Linux Kernel, enabling isolated application-defined schedulers in multi-tenancy environments. In combination with a high-level API, our work closes the gap between scheduler specification and deployment. We show the strength of our programming model by implementing seven novel schedulers tackling diverse objectives. Our real world measurements, for example, of an application- and preference-aware scheduler, show that the programming model enables timely scheduling decisions to retain fine-grained throughput objectives. Further measurements of a novel HTTP/2-aware scheduler show significantly improved interactions with upper-layer protocols, e.g., an optimized dependency resolution, while preserving path preferences.

Abstract:We use one-way communication delay of a TCP connection to design an MPTCP scheduler that transmits data out-of-order over multiple paths such that their arrival is in-order. Our Linux implementation shows our proposed scheduler can reduce receive buffer utilization, and increase overall throughput when a small receive buffer size results in receive buffer blocking.

Abstract:Multipath TCP(MPTCP) is a new multipath protocol at transport layer, proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) work group as it can improve the throughput by aggregating multipath bandwidth resources. However, with the bounded receiving buffer and heterogeneous network, MPTCP could suffer from degradation of its performances. The default data schedule in MPTCP is the Round-Robin data scheduling (RRDS) which transmits data packets to every path in turn. Without the consideration of the factors like bandwidth or delay, RRDS generates numbers of disordered data, which will degrade the performance of MPTCP in many situations. To solve this problem, we propose a novel multiple attribute-aware scheduling algorithm based on the delay and congestion status for MPTCP. The proposed algorithm gets the information of every path constantly and adaptively transmits data packets over multiple paths. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher throughput than existing solutions.

Abstract:MPTCP exploits using a device's multiple interfaces to achieve higher end-to-end throughput and increased robustness during times of path failure. We consider potential delay advantages that MPTCP can provide users of real-time applications (e.g., online gaming) where higher throughput does not necessarily guarantee a higher quality experience. We first explain a situation where jitter can occur in an MPTCP data transfer even when underlying network paths are stable. We propose a new scheduling policy that mitigates jitter by transmitting packets out-of-order on different sub flows such that they arrive in-order at the MPTCP receiver.

Abstract:Using multiple interfaces on mobile devices to get high throughput is promising to improve the user experience. However, Multipath TCP (MPTCP), the de-facto standardized solution, suffers when different paths have heterogeneous quality. This problem is especially severe when the difference is the path latency. Our experimental results show that it causes the burst sending of packets from the fast path, which requires the in-network buffer to be big to achieve the full benefit of the bandwidth aggregation. In addition, it also requires bigger host buffer to fully utilize the fast path. To solve these problems, we propose and implement a new scheduler, which pre-allocates packets to send over the fast path for in-order arrival. Instead of relying on the estimation of network path condition, our scheduler dynamically adapts the MPTCP-level send window based on the packets acknowledged. Our evaluation shows that our scheduler can improve the throughput by 30% when the in-network buffer is limited, 15% when the host buffer is limited.

Abstract:In order to be TCP-friendly, the original Multipath TCP (MPTCP) congestion control algorithm is always restricted to gain no better throughput than a traditional single-path TCP on the best path. However, it is unable to maximize the throughput over all available paths when they do not go through a shared bottleneck. Also, bottleneck fairness based solutions detect the bottleneck and conduct different congestion control algorithms at different bottleneck sets to increase throughput while remaining fair to single TCP. However, existing solutions generally detect shared bottlenecks through delay correlation and loss correlation between two flows, which often lead to misjudgement in dynamic and complex network scenarios. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a new Shared Bottleneck based Congestion Control scheme, called SB-CC, which leverages ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) mechanism to detect shared bottlenecks among subflows and estimate the congestion degree of each subflow. Then, with the congestion degree, SB-CC balances the loads among all subflows, and smooths out congestion window fluctuation. Also, in order to prevent throughput degradation due to out-of-order packets, we propose a Shared Bottleneck based Forward Prediction packet Scheduling scheme, called SB-FPS. SB-FPS distributes data according to the window size changes of each subflow, and thus could more accurately schedule data in shared bottleneck scenarios. We implement our proposed scheme in the Linux kernel and simulation platform to evaluate the performance in different scenarios. Measurement results indicate that our scheme can detect the bottleneck more accurately and improve the overall network performance while still keeping bottleneck fairness.

Abstract:Multi-path Transmission Control Protocol (MP-TCP) Coupled Congestion Control algorithm focuses on amalgamating the increased BandWidth (BW) of multiple available links while avoiding MP-TCP's higher aggressiveness in comparison to usual TCP flows on every utilized link. Therefore, this leads to exceedingly conventional behavior when the network paths do not share a congested link. Further, the situation worsens when the network paths possess varying characteristics (i.e., available BW, Packet Loss Rate (PLR), and delay), leading to incurring overheads such as higher re-ordering, buffer-blocking, and needless retransmissions in the network. We observe that the presently implemented MP-TCP scheduler suffers from lower channel utilization due to its conventional congestion window (cwnd) adaptation scheme. As a result, the protocol compromises application-level throughput performance. To address these issues, we propose an Adaptive-Data Scheduling Policy (A-DSP), which dynamically adjusts the cwnd growth according to the paths' Round Trip Time (RTT) variations. To regulate the transmission rate of each path concerning its assessed RTT variation, we design and implement an adaptive fast retransmission policy as well. The evaluations indicate that A-DSP decreases the File Transfer Time by over 50% compared to the MP-TCP scheduler. We also observe throughput performance gains of up to 46%, 19%, and 34% for different PLR, BW, and path delay values, respectively, compared to MP-TCP. Moreover, A-DSP also offers considerable performance improvement compared to other multi-path approaches.

Abstract:Quite a few algorithms have been proposed to optimize the transmission performance of Multipath TCP (MPTCP). However, existing MPTCP protocols are still far from satisfactory in lossy and ever-changing networks because of their loss-based congestion control and the difficulty of managing multiple subflows. Recently, a congestion-based congestion control, BBR, is proposed to promote TCP transmission performance through better use of bandwidth. Due to the superior performance of BBR, we try to boost MPTCP with it. For this propose, coupled congestion control should be redesigned for MPTCP, and a functional scheduler able to effectively make use of the characteristics of BBR must also be developed for better performance. In this paper, we first propose Coupled BBR as a coupled congestion control algorithm for MPTCP to achieve high throughput and stable sending rate in lossy network scenarios with guaranteed fairness with TCP BBR flows and balanced congestion. Then, to further improve the performance, we propose an Adaptively Redundant and Packet-by-Packet (AR\&P) scheduler, which includes two scheduling methods to improve adaptability in highly dynamic network scenarios and keep in-order packet delivery in asymmetric networks. Based on Linux kernel implementation and experiments in both testbed and real network scenarios, we show that the proposed scheme not only provides higher throughput, but also improves robustness and reduces out-of-order packets in some harsh circumstances.

Bandwidth Scheduling For Multipath Tcp Based Concurrent Multipath Transfer

Abstract:Concurrent multipath transfer (CMT) can achieve bandwidth aggregation by employing multiple TCP subflows in a connection. However, constrained by the transport layer protocols such as Multipath TCP, the throughput cannot increase linearly with bandwidth, which means bandwidth resources cannot be fully utilized. To improve the spectral efficiency, in this paper we propose a bandwidth scheduling scheme by allocating appropriate spectral resources for each link. Firstly, the concept of validity bandwidth (VBW) is employed to estimate the required size of bandwidth based on Mathis Model. Secondly, the Kalman Filter is applied to smooth the value of VBW caused by dynamical changes of network status. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in achieving a tradeoff between throughput and spectral efficiency. With path loss rate varies, the spectral efficiency improves by 92.6%. while the corresponding throughput suffers a decline by 17.4%. When delay changes, the biggest gap occurs at 100ms with 14.1% decline in throughput and 89.5% growth in spectral efficiency.
OCPS: Offset Compensation Based Packet Scheduling Mechanism for Multipath TCP.

Abstract:As terminals are equipped with multiple interfaces and allowed to access heterogeneous networks, transferring data simultaneously through all the available paths becomes possible and also brings many benefits. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) distributes an application stream over different TCP connections. Since different paths have disparate latencies, out-of-order packets problem occurs at receiver. Large number of these packets exhaust the limited receive buffer and make the receive window stall, which greatly degrade the throughput. Thus, a scheduling mechanism plays an important role to keep in-order delivery. Previous intelligent scheduling mechanisms schedule data independently each time and doesn't utilize the feedback carried in acknowledgements, which lose flexibility. Our Offset Compensation based Packet Scheduling (OCPS) mechanism gets feedback information from SACK options and gains the knowledge of whether last scheduling round still causes out-of-order problem. Then it modifies the scheduling next round accordingly by using an offset. The simulation results illustrate our mechanism enhance throughput and reduce cache occupancy at receiver.

Abstract:Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) promises to aggregate concurrent and multiple communications interfaces to improve data transmission rate. There is, however, an open issue of flow management under highly asymmetric condition where the throughput may degrade. This paper proposes an algorithm for flow scheduling in the sender to minimize the degree of out-of-order packets arriving in the receiver. The Round Trip Times (RTTs) of each path of a MPTCP connection are taken into traffic allocation over subflows. Simulations are conducted by extending the MPTCP open source modules for the NS2 tool set. It is found that the proposed algorithm is superior to a traditional Round-Robin (RR) technique in both buffer size and effective throughput.

Abstract:Multipath TCP is designed to utilize multiple network paths to achieve improved throughput and robustness against network failure. These features are supposed to make MPTCP preferable to single-path TCP in mobile networks. However, it fails to achieve the expected performance in practice. A key challenge of using MPTCP in mobile networks is how to effectively spread packets over heterogeneous and unstable network paths to mobile devices with limited buffers. If packets are not sent in an effective way, MPTCP may only provide equal or even lower throughput than single-path TCP. Several packet scheduling algorithms have been designed to tackle this challenge. Unfortunately, they still cannot achieve the expected performance in dynamic scenarios such as mobile networks. In this paper, we propose an Online-Learning Assisted Packet Scheduler (OLAPS) to solve the packet scheduling problem by modeling it as a multi-armed bandit problem. Over time, OLAPS can adaptively learn from current network conditions to make the best scheduling policy to provide the highest possible throughput in a dynamic environment. Moreover, when the inbuilt reward monitor detects the mismatch between network conditions and the learned policy, OLAPS aborts the outdated policy and switches to a new one swiftly. We implement OLAPS as a Linux kernel module and evaluate it over a wide range of ns-3-simulated network conditions. The results show that OLAPS retains MPTCP's ability to provide higher throughput and also significantly improves the throughput performance of MPTCP when other in-kernel schedulers suffer a dramatic throughput decline.

Abstract:Multipath TCP protocol (MPTCP) is a complicated transport layer protocol that transfers data by multiple paths simultaneously. It can improve end to end transmission throughput and increase network utilization. However, we find there are still deficiencies in the congestion control algorithm and throughput model of MPTCP, so we investigate these deficiencies in this study. Firstly, we design a novel congestion control algorithm, Path Associativity Congestion Control (PACC), which further enhances the throughput of MPTCP. PACC is based on fairness, the definition of which is more reasonable. Secondly, we find the adaptation problem of MPTCP that affects its performance, and propose a MPTCP throughput model, which can predict the throughput in real network environment. Finally, by analyzing the main factors causing the adaptation problem based on the throughput model, we design a dynamic reservation algorithm to improve the tra_c distribution and eliminate that issue. Extensive ns-2 simulation study has been performed to validate our design and algorithms.

Abstract:Traditional internet protocol (IP) networks, adhering to a "best-effort" service model, typically utilize shortest-path routing for data transmission. Nevertheless, this methodology encounters limitations, especially considering the increasing demands for both high reliability and high bandwidth. These demands reveal shortcomings in this routing strategy, notably its inefficient bandwidth utilization and fault recovery capabilities. The method of multipath transmission has been extensively researched as a solution to these challenges. With the emergence of innovative Internet architectures, notably information-centric networking (ICN), network nodes have gained enhanced capabilities, opening new avenues for multipath transmission design. This paper introduces a multipath scheduling approach for network nodes, capitalizing on the advanced features of these modern nodes. It reimagines the conventional next-hop node as a group of potential next-hop nodes based on both global and local routing strategies and assigns traffic shares to each node within this group for balanced traffic distribution. Network nodes are configured to periodically review and adjust traffic shares according to the link statuses. If scheduling cannot be completed within the set, feedback is sent to upstream nodes. Simulations demonstrate that this approach effectively leverages network path variety, improves bandwidth usage and throughput, and minimizes average data transmission time.

Abstract:Aiming at improving the performance of Multipath TCP (MPTCP) in heterogeneous wireless network environments, in this paper, by taking the advantages Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) and considering bottleneck fairness, we propose BBR-based Congestion Control and Packet Scheduling scheme, called BCCPS. The proposed BCCPS first considers a BBR-based congestion control algorithm, MPTCP-BBR, for MPTCP by adaptively adjusting the sending rate of each subflow according to the real probing rate rather than the loss information to enhance the goodput while keeping bottleneck fairness with regular TCP. Then, considering that the different sending rates of the subflows in heterogeneous wireless networks will result in the problem of out-of-order (OFO) delivery, a fine-grained packet scheduling scheme is proposed to keep in-order delivery and so as to reduce the application layer completion time. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated via both NS-3 and real network scenarios. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme far outperforms existing MPTCP schemes in heterogeneous wireless environment.
Adaptive Cheapest Path First Scheduling in a Transport-Layer Multi-Path Tunnel Context

Abstract:Bundling multiple access technologies increases capacity, resiliency and robustness of network connections. Multi-access is currently being standardized in the ATSSS framework in 3GPP, supporting different access bundling strategies. Within ATSSS, a multipath scheduler needs to decide which path to use for each user packet based on path characteristics. The Cheapest Path First (CPF) scheduler aims to utilize the cheapest path (e.g. WiFi) before sending packets over other paths (e.g. cellular). In this paper, we demonstrate that using CPF with an MP-DCCP tunnel may lead to sub-optimal performance. This is due to adverse interactions between the scheduler and end-to-end and tunnel congestion control. Hence, we design the Adaptive Cheapest Path First (ACPF) scheduler that limits queue buildup in the primary bottleneck and moves traffic to the secondary path earlier. We implement ACPF over both TCP and DCCP congestion controlled tunnels. Our evaluation shows that ACPF improves the average throughput over CPF between 24% to 86%.

A Loss Aware MPTCP Scheduler for Highly Lossy Networks

Abstract:A variety of wireless communication links today, such as HSPA+ access in high speed trains, balloon-based aerial wireless networks and satellite Internet connections have high loss rates. In such environments, Multipath TCP (MPTCP) offers a robust solution compared to regular TCP. However, MPTCP and existing schedulers suffer from performance degradation for both constant bit rate (CBR) and bulk traffic. To tackle this challenge, we develop LAMPS, a novel scheduler for MPTCP, which considers both the loss and delay when selecting subflows and chooses segments based on subflows' state. The design goal of LAMPS is to achieve a steady performance for different traffic and significantly reduce the unnecessary bandwidth consumption, especially in case of bursty losses. We have implemented LAMPS and evaluated its performance for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), CBR, and bulk traffic. Our experiment results show that LAMPS preserves application latency, keeps low memory consumption, and significantly reduces extra bandwidth consumption in the presence of high packet loss rate.

Abstract:Multipath Transport Control Protocol (MPTCP) is a promising solution to support simultaneous transmission of packets through multiple paths. With bounded receive buffer and heterogeneous networks, MPTCP could suffer from degradation of its performances, undermining the advantage from multiple path transmission. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective method to manage the multiple paths of MPTCP, called Receive Buffer based Path Management (RBPM), which operates based on the available receive buffer size and dissimilar characteristics of multiple paths. The RBPM scheme estimates out-of-ordered packets, predicts the buffer blocking problem in advance and stops transferring over bad performance paths. We implement RBPM in the Linux kernel and evaluate its performances over a virtual network environment using NS-3 Direct Code Execution. The results show that the proposed scheme significantly improves the throughput and network utilization with bounded receive buffer in heterogeneous networks.
