Abstract:Abstract The emergence of Homo sapiens in Eastern Asia is a topic of significant research interest. However, well-preserved human fossils in secure, dateable contexts in this region are extremely rare, and often the subject of intense debate owing to stratigraphic and geochronological problems. Tongtianyan cave, in Liujiang District of Liuzhou City, southern China is one of the most important fossils finds of H. sapiens , though its age has been debated, with chronometric dates ranging from the late Middle Pleistocene to the early Late Pleistocene. Here we provide new age estimates and revised provenience information for the Liujiang human fossils, which represent one of the most complete fossil skeletons of H. sapiens in China. U-series dating on the human fossils and radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence dating on the fossil-bearing sediments provided ages ranging from ~33,000 to 23,000 years ago (ka). The revised age estimates correspond with the dates of other human fossils in northern China, at Tianyuan Cave (~40.8–38.1 ka) and Zhoukoudian Upper Cave (39.0–36.3 ka), indicating the geographically widespread presence of H. sapiens across Eastern Asia in the Late Pleistocene, which is significant for better understanding human dispersals and adaptations in the region.

Abstract:The 2007 discovery of fragmentary human remains (two molars and an anterior mandible) at Zhirendong (Zhiren Cave) in South China provides insight in the processes involved in the establishment of modern humans in eastern Eurasia. The human remains are securely dated by U-series on overlying flowstones and a rich associated faunal sample to the initial Late Pleistocene, >100 kya. As such, they are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate by >60,000 y the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region. The Zhiren 3 mandible in particular presents derived modern human anterior symphyseal morphology, with a projecting tuber symphyseos, distinct mental fossae, modest lateral tubercles, and a vertical symphysis; it is separate from any known late archaic human mandible. However, it also exhibits a lingual symphyseal morphology and corpus robustness that place it close to later Pleistocene archaic humans. The age and morphology of the Zhiren Cave human remains support a modern human emergence scenario for East Asia involving dispersal with assimilation or populational continuity with gene flow. It also places the Late Pleistocene Asian emergence of modern humans in a pre-Upper Paleolithic context and raises issues concerning the long-term Late Pleistocene coexistence of late archaic and early modern humans across Eurasia.
Longquan Cave: an Early Upper Palaeolithic Site in Henan Province, China

Abstract:The Palaeolithic sequence of East Asia differs from that of western Eurasia in that it is characterised by core-and-flake tools. Blade industries only appear late in the sequence, long after the first appearance of modern humans; bone tools and personal ornaments may therefore function as a better marker of modern human presence. Longquan Cave provides vital new evidence to this effect, with dated hearths indicating an initial occupation around 40 kya cal BP, followed by a second period of activity around 35-31 kya cal BP. They are associated with a polished bone awl and a structured division of settlement space, features typically associated with modern humans.

Abstract:The human remains recovered from Upper Cave at Zhoukoudian are the richest and best preserved late Pleistocene human fossils ever found in east Asia. For decades, as the representative of the late Pleistocene human in east Asia, the Upper Cave skulls have played an important role in research on the origins of modern Mongoloids and American Indians. Recently, more attention has been paid to the details and mechanisms for late Pleistocene human evolution and the formation of modern human populations. Both the origin and diversification of modern humans have been stressed in research. Some studies further the debates on the evolutionary position of Upper Cave Man and this group's role in the formation of modern human populations in east Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on three Upper Cave skulls and modern Chinese unearthed from two archaeological sites in North China. Our results indicate that 8 features are expressed differently between Upper Cave Man and modern Chinese. We believe that more primitive characteristics define Upper Cave Man when compared to modern Chinese populations. These findings and some problems on late Pleistocene human evolution including intra-group variation and the standard for modern human populations, are discussed.

Some studies further trigger the debaters on the Upper Cave Man concerning its evolutionary level and its role in the formation of modern human populations in East Asia. To further explore these problems, we examined and compared 12 non-metric features on the 3 Late Pleistocene Upper Cave skulls and 162 Holocene individuals earthed from two archaeological sites of North China (Longxian and Yanqing). Our results indicate that 8 on the 12 features have different expression patterns between Upper Cave Man and recent Chinese leading the authors to believe that more primitive expressions appeared on the Upper Cave Man than on recent Chinese Populations. Deduction of the Age of the Dali Hominin Fossil Based on Regional Geomorphic-Sedimentary Evolution

Abstract:Dali hominin, an archaic type of early Homo sapiens, is of great significance to the understanding of the evolutionary processes of Homo sapiens in China. However, its age remains debatable. There developed a series of lacustrine and alluvial terraces both in the northeastern part of the Weihe Basin and in the stretch of the Luo River near the Dali hominin site, and the Dali hominin cranium fossil was yielded from the basal alluvium of T-3 of the Luo River. The paper first adopted the loess-paleosol sequence dating method to determine the age of each terrace, in order to delineate the history of the regional paleolake regression-transgression cycles. Then, in combination with the characteristics of the geomorphic-sedimentary body bearing the Dali hominin fossil, the paper verified which paleolake regression-transgression cycle is represented by the fossil-bearing deposits. Last, based on grain-size and pollen evidences from this geomorphic -sedimentary body, the paper deduced the age of the cranium-bearing bed. The results show that there occurred several paleolake regressions and river down-cutting events when S-14, L-9, L-6, S-2, L-2 and L-1SS developed or accumulated respectively, and that the alluvium bearing the cranium fossil was deposited after the paleolake regression in the late stage of L-6 deposition. This regression caused parts of the paleolake bed to emerge subaerially and the Luo River subsequently flowed over it, eroding the lacustrine sediment and depositing alluvium. The deposition of this alluvium was therefore probably synchronous with the development of S-5, with a mean age of similar to 550 ka. By comparison with Homo heidelbergensis at Mauer (Germany) in both the living paleoenvironment and the age, the paper found that both hominin may be penecontemporaneous. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Abstract Human remains recovered from the Donghulin site are key materials for the study of the physical evolution and biocultural adaptation of the North Chinese population during the early Holocene. Physical anthropological study of the skeletal remains of two Donghulin individuals shows that their craniofacial heterogeneity and diversity are comparable to that of the Upper Paleolithic population. Early Holocene is the critical period for the formation of the diagnostic craniofacial features of modern East Asian population. The dental macrowear, dental caries, and femoral midshaft diaphyseal cross section geometry suggest that the Donghulin people were undergoing a physical transformation attributable to reduced mobility and broad-spectrum diet, which is consistent with the Upper Paleolithic-Neolithic transition of lifestyle and subsistence strategy.
Internal structural properties of the humeral diaphyses in an early modern human from Tianyuan Cave, China

Abstract:Since the cross-sectional geometries of long bone diaphyses preserve evidence of a bone's mechanical loading history, examination of a bones' cross-sectional properties can be used to inform its loading history. Here, we use a novel colormap method to quantitatively visualize the topography of cortical bone, second moment of areas, and polar moment of areas along the humeral diaphyses to shed light on the potential manipulative behaviors of the Tianyuan 1 fossil human (Homo sapiens). We compare both humeri of Tianyuan 1 to two Holocene Chinese populations. Our results show that the standardized cortical bone thickness, standardized second moment of areas, and standardized polar moment of areas of Tianyuan 1's right humeral diaphysis are greater than those of the left diaphysis. This evidence supports the hypothesis that the individual was right-handed. The greater medial and lateral cortical reinforcement in the right midshaft humerus, relative to that of the left humerus, may be related to increased unilateral physical activity of the right arm. Unlike the lower humeral asymmetry of recent human agriculturalists, the relatively higher bilateral asymmetry, combined with the relatively larger femoral robusticity, indicate that Tianyuan 1 lived an activity lifestyle compared to the agriculturalists investigated in this study. The bilateral asymmetry of the right and left humeri may be more informative for discriminating between fossil and recent modern human samples than cortical thickness or rigidity values in only one side. This study also indicates that upper limb internal structures can provide important information for inferring the behavior of ancient hominins.
Morphological and morphometric analyses of a late Middle Pleistocene hominin mandible from Hualongdong, China

Abstract:Excavations in Hualongdong (HLD), East China, have yielded abundant hominin fossils dated to 300 ka. There is a nearly complete mandible that fits well with a partial cranium, and together they compose the skull labeled as HLD 6. Thus far, detailed morphological description and comparisons of the mandible have not been conducted. Here we present a comprehensive morphological, metric, and geometric morphometric assessment of this mandible and compare it with both adult and immature specimens of Pleistocene hominins and recent modern humans. Results indicate that the HLD 6 mandible exhibits a mosaic morphological pattern characterized by a robust corpus and relatively gracile symphysis and ramus. The moderately developed mental trigone and a clear anterior mandibular incurvation of the HLD 6 mandible are reminiscent of Late Pleistocene hominin and recent modern human morphology. However, the weak expression of all these features indicates that this mandible does not possess a true chin. Moreover, a suite of archaic features that resemble those of Middle Pleistocene hominins includes pronounced alveolar planum, superior transverse torus, thick corpus, a pronounced endocondyloid crest, and a well-developed medial pterygoid tubercle. The geometric morphometric analysis further confirms the mosaic pattern of the HLD 6 mandible. The combination of both archaic and modern human features identified in the HLD 6 mandible is unexpected, given its late Middle Pleistocene age and differs from approximately contemporaneous Homo members such as Xujiayao, Penghu, and Xiahe. This mosaic pattern has never been recorded in late Middle Pleistocene hominin fossil assemblages in East Asia. The HLD 6 mandible provides further support for the high morphological diversity during late Middle Pleistocene hominin evolution. With these findings, it is possible that modern human morphologies are present as early as 300 ka and earlier than the emergence of modern humans in East Asia.

Abstract:Hominins with morphology similar to present-day humans appear in the fossil record across Eurasia between 40,000 and 50,000 y ago. The genetic relationships between these early modern humans and present-day human populations have not been established. We have extracted DNA from a 40,000-y-old anatomically modern human from Tianyuan Cave outside Beijing, China. Using a highly scalable hybridization enrichment strategy, we determined the DNA sequences of the mitochondrial genome, the entire nonrepetitive portion of chromosome 21 (∼30 Mbp), and over 3,000 polymorphic sites across the nuclear genome of this individual. The nuclear DNA sequences determined from this early modern human reveal that the Tianyuan individual derived from a population that was ancestral to many present-day Asians and Native Americans but postdated the divergence of Asians from Europeans. They also show that this individual carried proportions of DNA variants derived from archaic humans similar to present-day people in mainland Asia.

Abstract:One of the most hotly debated and frontal issues in paleoanthropology focuses on the origins of modern humans. Recently, an incomplete hominin mandible with a distinctly weaker mental protuberance than modern human and a great variety of coexisting fossil mammals were unearthed from the Homo sapiens Cave of Mulan Mountain, Chongzuo, Guangxi. The mammalian fauna from the Homo sapiens Cave characterized by the combination of Elephas kiangnanensis, first occurring Elephas maixmus, and Megatapirus augustus, and strikingly different from the Early Pleistocene Gigantopithecus fauna and the Middle Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stogodon fauna of South China could be regarded as an early representive of the typical Asian elephant fauna. Faunal analysis, biostratigraphic correlation, and, most importantly, U-series dating all consistently support an estimate of ca. 110 ka for the age of the fossil Homo sapiens and coexisting mammalian fauna, that is, the early Late Pleistocene. The fauna is mainly made up of tropical-subtropical elements, but grassland elements have a much greater variety than forest elements, which probably indicates a drier climate at that time. This discovery of early Homo sapiens at the Mulan Mountain will play a significant role in the study of the origin and its environmental background of modern humans.
A New Chronological Framework for Chuandong Cave and Its Implications for the Appearance of Modern Humans in Southern China.

Abstract:Chuandong Cave is an important Late Paleolithic site because it documents the early appearance of bone tools in southern China. We used the single-aliquot regenerative-dose protocol for optically stimulated luminescence dating to improve the precision of the chronology for the Chuandong Cave sedimentary sequence. The age of each layer was determined using a Bayesian modeling approach which combined optically stimulated luminescence ages with published AMS C-14 dates. The results showed that Layer 10 began accumulating since 56 +/- 14 ka and provides the upper age limit for all artifacts from the sequence. Bone awl tools from Layer 8, the earliest grinding bone tools in this site, were recovered within sediments between 40 +/- 7 ka and 30 +/- 4 ka. Layer 8 also indicates the appearance of modern humans in the Chuandong Cave sequence. Layers 4-2, ranging from 15 +/- 3 ka until 11 +/- 1 ka and including the Younger Dryas period, contain a few bone awls and an eyed bone needle. The shift from bone awls to eyed bone needles in the Chuandong Cave sequence indicates that modern humans adapted to the changing climate of southern China. We conclude that modern human behavior in bone tools appeared in southern China as early as 40 +/- 7 ka, became more sophisticated during the Last Glacial Maximum, and spread more widely across southern China during the Younger Dryas. Abstract:Recent applications of 3D virtual imaging techniques in human palaeontology have increased the possibilities and the accuracy of anthropological analysis. Two examples are given for the reconsideration of fossils discovered more than 20 years ago, thanks to this new technology. The Lower and Middle Pleistocene skulls from Yunxian and Nankin in China, which were damaged in the process of fossilization, have been virtually reconstructed. A detailed reinvestigation has been conducted by considering those reconstructed skulls and their unpublished characters (i.e., inner anatomical features inaccessible until now). The results of this analysis provide new information about the early hominids of China and contribute to the discussion of variability in Homo erectus. (C) 2010 Academie des sciences. AMS 14C Dating of the Hominin Archaeological Site Chuandong Cave in Guizhou Province, Southwestern China

Abstract:This study presents detailed AMS C-14 dating of charcoals, burned and unburned bones, and teeth from the hominin archaeological site Chuandong Cave, located in Puding County, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. The charcoal samples were pretreated with either the acid - base - acid (ABA) or ORAU - XR method, the unburned bone and teeth samples with ABA-collagen pretreatment, and the burned bone samples with the ORAU - CB method. The AMS C-14 ages of the charcoal samples provide the most reliable results in this study. The AMS C-14 dates of the bone samples are generally younger, possibly due to posterior amino acid contamination. Based on the AMS C-14 ages, we propose the following chronology for the site: Layers 3 to 5 formed between 11.5-12.5 ka BP ( all C-14 ages reported in this study are calibrated ages unless stated otherwise. A BP - years before 1950 CE), a period corresponding to the Younger Dryas; Layers 6 to 7 formed between 14-24 ka BP, a period including the Last Glacial Maximum ( LGM); and Layers 8-9 likely formed before 34 ka BP corresponding to the late Pleistocene. According to the above chronology, the Chuandong humans ( modern Homo sapiens) were present at 12 ka BP, i.e., the late Pleistocene. This conclusion differs from the previous estimate at similar to 9 ka BP, i.e., the early Holocene. Furthermore, the Chuandong Culture likely began as early as 34 ka BP and survived in the region throughout the cold and dry LGM. Detailed studies on the hominin archaeological sites in Guizhou, including Chuandong Cave and Maomaodong Cave, are warranted to better understand hominin evolution in Asia. Abstract:Two early Late Pleistocene (~105,000- to 125,000-year-old) crania from Lingjing, Xuchang, China, exhibit a morphological mosaic with differences from and similarities to their western contemporaries. They share pan-Old World trends in encephalization and in supraorbital, neurocranial vault, and nuchal gracilization. They reflect eastern Eurasian ancestry in having low, sagittally flat, and inferiorly broad neurocrania. They share occipital (suprainiac and nuchal torus) and temporal labyrinthine (semicircular canal) morphology with the Neandertals. This morphological combination reflects Pleistocene human evolutionary patterns in general biology, as well as both regional continuity and interregional population dynamics.

Abstract:Two almost complete fossil hominid crania (EV9001 and EV9002) were found in 1989 and 1990 in Middle Pleistocene terrace deposit of Han River, Yunxian county, Hubei province, China. They are classified as Homo erectus. Nine fossil animal teeth stratigraphically associated with the skulls were selected for electron spin resonance (ESR) dating. The simple exponential function was used for determination of the accumulated dose De and its appropriateness was discussed on the base of the experimental study. The closed system assumption was checked and the early uranium uptake model was applied to age determination. A mean age value was yielded to be 581+/-93 ka. It deviates from the palaeomagnetic dating result of 830-870 ka. Micro-regional complete saturation of ESR signal in enamel of very high U-content may account for the underestimation of ESR ages. Nevertheless both ESR and palaeomagnetic dating results place Yunxian crania in between the Homo erectus of Lantian and Zhoukoudian, which means that Yunxian crania constitute an important link in the human evolutionary lineage of China. Abstract:The human skeletons studied in this article were buried ca. 5000Bp and unearthed at Guangrao Neolithic Site of Shandong. We observed 61 human skulls of them in eight minor skeletal variants and calculated the frequency of their occurrence. The results from the cluster analysis and the principle component analysis based on the mean measure of divergence(MMD) of eight groups of Mongoloids show that the Guangrao skeletons belong to the East Asian Mongoloid group and we also find that mylohyoid bridge, double hypoglossal canal and supraorbital foramen contribute more to differentiate the geographical types of Mongoloids.

Abstract:Significance Genetic studies show the founders of all living non-African populations expanded from Africa ca. 65 to 45 ka. This “late dispersal” model has been challenged by the discovery of isolated AMHs at caves in southern China suggested as early as ca. 120 ka. We assessed the age of early AMH fossils from five caves in this region using ancient DNA analysis and a multimethod geological dating strategy. We found they were much younger than previously suggested, with some remains dating to the Holocene owing to the complex depositional history at these subtropical caves. Current evidence shows AMHs settled southern China within the timeframe set by molecular data of less than ca. 50 to 45 ka and no earlier.
