Invasion of Exotic Spartina Alterniflora Alters the Size, Availability, and Stability of the Soil Phosphorus Pool in the Coastal Wetlands of Eastern China

Abstract:Invasive plant species can significantly impact biogeochemical cycles, particularly carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Despite phosphorus (P) being an indispensable limiting nutrient for plant growth and one of the critical biogeochemical cycles, little consideration has been given to the effects of invasive plant species on soil P pool and their driving mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the impacts of Spartina alternifolia invasion on the size, availability, and stability of soil (0-30 cm) P pool, in contrast to bare flat, native Suaeda salsa, and Phragmites australis communities in the coastal wetlands of Eastern China. It was observed that S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased the concentrations and ratios of soil (0-30 cm) labile P and moderately-labile P compared with S. salsa and P. australis communities, while it decreased the concentration and proportion of stable P relative to P. australis community, which implied that S. alterniflora invasion promoted soil P availability but lowered its stability. Soil microbial attributes (i.e., alkaline phosphatase (ALP), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), microbial biomass P), and soil microenvironment (e.g., moisture, pH, salinity) were found as the overwhelming driving factors for the variations in soil labile P fraction. While soil microenvironment and plant properties mainly regulated stable P. We concluded that S. alterniflora invasion significantly enlarged soil (0-30 cm) P pool, increased soil P availability, and reduced P stability by modifying soil P fractions that were mainly affected by greatly increased aboveground biomass, foliar total P, soil moisture, salinity, nutrient substrates, ALP, AMF, and microbial biomass P following S. alterniflora invasion. The variations in these factors modified soil P fractions and promoted soil P cycle. Notably, enhanced soil P availability following S. alterniflora invasion may assist with its further expansion, and may increase the likelihood of potential water contamination in coastal areas by triggering the release of dissolved P.
