Abstract:Most of current image synthesis models are based on optics of visible-spectrum. While simulating the illumination effect of visible light, they cannot show the infrared signature of the objects. This paper presents a synthesis model for generating realistic infrared images. We first establish a heat equilibrium equation of the object surface. Then according to it and the heat transfer inside the object and on the boundary surface of the object, we compute the temperature and radiometries of each surface patch of the object. Finally on the basis of the radiometries, each patch is drawn by Gouraud Shading. Experimental examples of the generated infrared images are presented, which illustrate the potential of our method.

Abstract:Most of the current illumination models for realistic image synthesis are based on optics of visual range. These models cannot be used to simulate the infrared signature of objects, so they can't meet the requirements of infrared image synthesis. This paper proposes a simulation model of object's infrared signature based on infrared physics and heat transfer, which successfully simulates the infrared signature of a object having the internal heat source. The paper first presents the theoretic model integrating conduction heat transfer, surface heat diffusion and infrared radiation. Initial results demonstrate the potential of our method.

Abstract:Most of current infrared image synthesis models mainly base on target's quantum self-radiation, they fait to simulate the infrared specular highlight effect and the infrared attenuation effect through atmosphere. This paper presents a new realistic image synthesis model for infrared scene. Within our model, we consider various kinds of infrared radiation components in infrared scene. By combining the advantage of the illumination models of computer graphics and the characteristics of infrared imaging, infrared specular highlight scene and infrared attenuation effect through atmosphere and other infrared scenes are realistically simulated. The new model is a global image synthesis model suitable both for infrared image synthesis and visible image synthesis. Experimental results of various scenes demonstrate the potential of our model.

Abstract:Although a number of infrared models are available for synthesizing the infrared image of static objects, they fail to simulate the infrared signature of targets flying at high speed. This paper presents an infrared image synthesis model for such kind of targets. Within this model, we account for not only all forms of heat transfer inside the targets but also the dynamic interaction between the target's surface and the surrounding air-flow. The heat transfer process between the target's surface and the air-flow is carefully analyzed based on the principles of infrared physics, aerodynamics and heat transfer, and a term due to aerodynamic heating is incorporated into our new model. This paper presents a global infrared image synthesis model for large-scale complex urban scene which can be applied to various weather conditions and suitable for various parts of the urban scene. First, we analysis the influence of various factors on the infrared characteristic of urban scene Then based on principle of energy equilibrium we propose a global infrared image synthesis model for urban scene and discuss the specific forms for various parts of the scene. As the rendering principle for infrared scene differs from that for visible scene, we propose a novel rendering criterion for infrared scene. Finally based on Planck's law, infrared images of urban scene from different viewpoints at different time are presented. Field measurement further shows that our model is robust and feasible.

Abstract:Most of current illumination models in realistic image synthesis are based on visible waveband. These models can not simulate the realistic image synthesis in infrared waveband. This paper presents a new quantity optics based illumination model for infrared image synthesis. The model adds a quantity radiation term of the object itself, E(ε, T, λ1, λ2), based on the traditional illumination models such as Phong model. Where λ1 and λ2 are the initial and terminal wavelengths of the received waveband of detector, respectively, and ε is the black-degree of the object, T is the absolute temperature of the object. This model is suitable both for the image synthesis in infrared waveband and for the image synthesis in visible waveband. When the received waveband locates in the visible waveband with low-temperature objects in the scene, this model returns to be the traditional illumination model. The new model can simulate the phenomena that the traditional illumination models cannot simulate, such as the different colors of iron during the process of fusion. Several realistic visible and infrared images in different scenes are rendered based on the model at last.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a real-time infrared sky image synthesis model based on atmospheric optics, infrared physics and hardware acceleration techniques of computer graphics. We can real-time generate infrared sky image at different time and from changing viewpoint realistically. In our model, we first establish an infrared image synthesis for clear sky. Then we determine the infrared radiation and distribution of stars in the sky at given time and location. Based on infrared star catalogue, we propose a new rule to determine the infrared star magnitude in the given infrared receiving waveband. By series of coordinate change, infrared star distribution in the sky at given time and at given viewpoint can be drawn. Total IR radiation of the cloud includes IR self emitted radiation of the cloud, IR reflected radiation from the surface of the earth and IR sun radiance are calculated. Using the particle systems, the cloud is modeled and it can be rendered on a series of dynamically image planes. Finally by adopting the hardware accelerating techniques of computer graphics, the infrared dynamic sky scenes could be successfully drawn in real time.
New Model for Realistic IR Image Rendering of City Buildings

Abstract:A new model for realistic IR image rendering of city buildings was proposed in this paper. Within the model, We first analyzed the main kinds of factors affecting the infrared characteristic of city buildings such as air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, sun and sky radiations. Then we established an energy equation based on principle of energy equilibrium for the surface parts of city building scene and by adopting multi-layer infinite difference method and Gauss-Seidier's iterative method, the surface temperatures of building scene under various conditions were acquired. To make the IR scene more realistic, we proposed a new method to obtain IR texture from its corresponding visible image based on the spectral correlation and the thermal attribute of the classified materials in scene. Using Ray tracing to determine IR shadow area and render the IR scene of city building with high-reality. To simulate the attenuated and blurred effect of atmosphere, we propose an IR attenuation imaging model. Finally, various IR images of city buildings at different time in a day and at different detected distance are realistically rendered based on our model.

Abstract:Recently infrared signature simulation has been in a state of great interest. Although various models have been developed to generate synthetic image of infrared scenes, little work has been done to create high fidelity infrared image of bridge. In this paper a realistic model for infrared image synthesis of bridge based on its thermal energy transmission is proposed to generate the infrared image of bridge at different time. Our new IR image synthesis model of bridge accounts for meteorological, environmental, material and artificial factors. Then an energy equilibrium equation is built based on the principle of heat transfer and infrared physics. And a finite difference method is adopted to solve the equations. Finally we get the radiance distribution of target surface. To get high fidelity, the effect of atmosphere is added using LOWMAN model. The value of attenuation is pre-computed and stored in our database. We also pregenerate infrared texture and depth attenuated image from visible image. Infrared images of bridge from different viewpoints at different time can be rendered. Our results of simulation show that the model is robust and feasible.

Abstract:Realistic infrared image synthesis of targets and their background is the key techniques to produce infrared scene and realize its virtual walkthrough. Considering the effect of various environment factors, we first establish the thermal model of ground target such as tank based on the principle of heat transfer and draw infrared images of tank at various states. Then we calculate the re-distribution of temperature field after the tanks passing through and draw the infrared synthesis images of tanks and its underlying ground. Finally by using the methods of three-dimensional finite difference, we calculate and render the effect of Infrared Shadow which describes the temperature rising of the center area originally occupied by tanks in comparison with the surrounding area after the tanks are driven away. We also render different gray and color infrared images of the ground at different intervals after the tanks have been driven away. Based on these, we can determine the existence of the infrared targets some time ago.

Abstract:To obtain infrared images more conveniently, a method for constructing a wide range of infrared scenes based on visible light remote sensing images and acquiring infrared image is proposed. Visible images are divided into different material region by superpixel segmentation and manual adjustment. According to different material types, four types of heat balance equation models are used to predict the temperature of surface materials under different conditions and calculate their radiant energy. Based on the OSG engine, a large-scale infrared scene is reconstructed. The atmospheric transmission effect is considered, infrared image is generated by using ray tracing. Experiments show that the material partitioning method can improve the efficiency, and the temperature prediction value is more accurate. The infrared large-scale scenes obtained by the infrared texture modulation are rich in details and high in realism, and the infrared images at various angles can be easily obtained by using ray tracing.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method to generate the dynamic infrared outer space scene in real time. In the paper, we first model the dynamic infrared background of star sky based on the infrared star catalogue and temporal and spacial coordinate transformations. We also present a new concept called infrared star magnitude for given infrared receiving wavebands to display the infrared star sky effectively. Then we put forward an infrared image synthesis model for outer space targets based on the method of divided elements and energy equilibrium. To generate the dynamic infrared outer space scene, several simplification and accelerating techniques such as Billboard, Levels of Details and Occlusion Culling are hired to accelerate the generating speed of the scene. Finally infrared images of targets, background of outer space scene at different infrared receiving wavebands are drawn and the dynamic infrared outer space scene is successfully carried out in real time.

Abstract:This paper proposes a hybrid approach of geometry based modeling and multi-spectral texture image based rendering to realize real-time walkthrough of infrared scene. The targets and background of infrared scene are first modeled geometrically. Then by incorporating the attenuation effect of atmosphere and the noise mechanism of infrared image sensor, the infrared depth images of objects in the scene front different viewpoint are pre-generated. Real-time walkthrough of infrared scene is finally achieved.

Abstract:Due to the low contrast, lack of details and difficulties to distinguish target from background in traditional infrared(IR) imaging systems, the detection and recognition probability of camouflage infrared target is relatively low. Compared with the traditional IR imaging systems, the method of polarimetric imaging uses polarization information, which can help detect and isolate manmade objects from the natural environment in complex. The method of infrared polarimetric imaging is proposed in this paper. The experiment builds the IR polarimetric imaging system. An IR polarizer made of BaF2 is assembled before the IR camera. By rotating the IR polarizer, twelve polarization images are obtained at every thirty degree. The gray levels of the images are calculated by program. Stokes polarization vector representation is introduced to calculate I of stokes vector and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) with polarization images. According to the character of parameter I of stokes vector and DoLP, we propose an IR polarization fusion method based on Shearlets using regional saliency analysis. This method can highlight the target area and have good performance in the fusion of IR radiation information and IR polarization characteristics. To test the effectiveness of this method, we use mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera and long-wave infrared(LWIR) camera to get real images. Compared with original image, both the subjective and objective evaluation results indicate that the enhanced images obtained by our method have much more image details and polarization information, which is useful for target detection and recognition.

Abstract:There always exist contrast reduction and details degradation when the infrared imaging system works on water surface because of fog and water mist. An image enhancement method is proposed based on radiative transfer theory. Firstly, the infrared enhancement model is built according to radiative transfer theory, with which we construct an optimization frame. Secondly, edge matrix is designed for weight analysis, which is particularly important for next estimation of fine transmissivity and optical path radiation. Finally, enhancement is achieved with edge matrix. The main contribution and novelty includes the derivation of enhancement based on radiative transfer theory, design of edge matrix, and estimation of fine transmissivity and optical path radiation. The experimental comparisons show the proposed method can generate results with a good visual effect, which is proved by both subjective and objective assessment. The experiments also indicate that the proposed algorithm runs fast to apply in real system.

Abstract:Although many models have been put forward to realize static infrared scene, they could not generate dynamic infrared scene real time in interactive way. In this paper a new method is proposed to solve the problem. We first model the targets and background of infrared scene based on the hybrid way of geometry and multi-spectral texture images. Then considering the attenuation effect of atmosphere and the noise mechanic of infrared image sensor, we present an infrared depth image model to generate dynamic images of the objects in the scene from different viewpoint. The complexity of infrared dynamic scene is thus reduced greatly and the reality of infrared scene is improved. Finally, real-time walkthrough for infrared scene is successfully realized and the average walkthrough speed is larger than 25 frames per second.

Abstract:The integration of infrared and visible images has become increasingly relevant in the field of remote sensing technologies and image processing applications. This technique has proven beneficial in scenarios such as thermal source monitoring and anomaly detection for industrial machines. The fusion of these two images allows for the creation of a compound image that contains important information from both sources, resulting in an enhanced image with rich background details and clear targets. This paper presents a model for image fusion and probabilistic generation of infrared and visible images. The variational Bayesian approximation method is utilized to fuse the information from both images. The proposed method also introduces a hierarchical prior model using wavelet transform and a variational Bayesian inference algorithm to achieve information fusion. The proposed method provides a feasible and effective solution for health monitoring applications of high-speed direct-drive blowers in industrial scenarios.
Synthesis of Infrared Ground Target and Its Background

Abstract:We establish an infrared model for ground target such as tank considering the effect of inner heat source, friction and various environmental factors and draw infrared images of target at various states using the techniques of Computer Graphics. We then propose a thermal model for different grounds using one-dimension finite difference method to calculate the surface temperature changing with time. The results are quite satisfied compared with the measured values. Also the re-distributing of temperature field after the touch between targets and ground is calculated and the realistic infrared synthesis images of targets and the ground background are drawn. Finally by using the methods of three-dimensional finite difference, we successfully calculate and render Infrared Shadow which describes the effect of higher temperature distribution of the center area originally occupied by targets than that of the around area after the targets are driven away. We also draw different IR images of the ground at the different intervals after the targets have been driven away. Based on these IR images, we can determine the existence of the IR targets some certain interval ago.
PID: Physics-Informed Diffusion Model for Infrared Image Generation

Abstract:Infrared imaging technology has gained significant attention for its reliable sensing ability in low visibility conditions, prompting many studies to convert the abundant RGB images to infrared images. However, most existing image translation methods treat infrared images as a stylistic variation, neglecting the underlying physical laws, which limits their practical application. To address these issues, we propose a Physics-Informed Diffusion (PID) model for translating RGB images to infrared images that adhere to physical laws. Our method leverages the iterative optimization of the diffusion model and incorporates strong physical constraints based on prior knowledge of infrared laws during training. This approach enhances the similarity between translated infrared images and the real infrared domain without increasing extra training parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that PID significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.
