Abstract:Objective To investigate the changes of bone mineral density(BMD) in young adult patients with hyperthyroidism. Methods BMD at lumbar spine(L2~4),left proximal femur(femoral neck, greater trochanter and hip joint)and the whole skeleton was detected using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA) in 84 untreated young hyperthyroid patients and 84 healthy controls matched for age and sex.Serum free T3-index(FT3) and T4-index(FT4) levels were measured with chemiluminescence immunoassay. Results Abnormal bone mineral content occurred in 51.7%(30/58) of the untreated female patients and 46.2%(12/26) of the untreated male.Of the female and male with abnormal bone mineral content, the osteopenia incidence was 36.2%(21/58)and 30.8%(8/26)and the osteoporosis incidence was 15.5%(9/58)and 15.4%(4/26),respectively.BMD at L2~4(except male's;P >0.05),left proximal femur and whole skeleton in the patients with hyperthyroidism was lower than that in the control group(P< 0.01).In the hyperthyroid patients, duration of disease and the contents of serum FT3 and FT4 were negatively related with BMD at the whole skeleton,L2~4(except male's;P >0.05),and left proximal femur. Conclusion Hyperthyroidism is one of the major risk factors for BMD reduction or osteoporosis in young males and females.
