Abstract:We numerically demonstrate that a supersolid phase exists in a frustrated hard-core boson system on a triangular lattice over a wide range of interaction strength. In the infinite repulsion (Ising) limit, we establish a mapping to the same problem with unfrustrated hopping, which connects the supersolid to the known results in that case. The weak superfluidity can be destroyed or strongly enhanced by a next nearest neighbor hopping term, which provides valuable information for experimental realization of a supersolid phase on optical lattice.

Abstract:We study the effect of a short-ranged hard-core repulsion on the stability and superfluid properties of the cluster crystal phase of two-dimensional (2D) soft core bosons. Results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a cogent test case suggest that the main physical properties of the phase remain unaltered if the range d of the inner repulsive core is sufficiently short, even if the strength of the repulsion is several orders of magnitude greater than the outer soft core barrier. Only if d is an appreciable fraction of the size of the clusters (> 5%) does a sufficiently strong hard core repulsion cause the crystal to break down into a homogeneous superfluid; a moderate inner core repulsion enhances the superfluid response of the crystalline phase.

Extended Supersolid Phase of Frustrated Hard-Core Bosons on a Triangular Lattice.

Abstract:We study a model of hard-core bosons with frustrated nearest-neighbor hopping (t) and repulsion (V) on the triangular lattice. We argue for a supersolid ground state in the large repulsion (V>>|t|) limit where a dimer representation applies, by constructing a unitary mapping to the well-understood unfrustrated hopping case. This generalized "Marshall sign rule" allows us to establish the precise nature of the supersolid order by utilizing a recently proposed dimer variational wave function, whose correlations can be efficiently calculated using the Grassmann approach. By continuity, a supersolid is predicted over the wide parameter range, V>-2t>0. This also establishes a simple phase diagram for the triangular lattice spin 1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet.

Abstract:We present a numerical study on ground state properties of a one-dimensional (1D) general Hubbard model (GHM) with particle-assisted tunnelling rates and repulsive on-site interaction (positive-U), which describes fermionic atoms in an anisotropic optical lattice near a wide Feshbach resonance. For our calculation, we utilize the time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm, which is an extension of the density matrix renormalization group and provides a well-controlled method for 1D systems. We show that the positive-U GHM, when hole-doped from half-filling, exhibits a phase with coexistence of quasi-long-range superfluid and charge-density-wave orders. This feature is different from the property of the conventional Hubbard model with positive-U, indicating the particle-assisted tunnelling mechanism in GHM brings in qualitatively new physics.

Abstract:A chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase has been recently reported in the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice. It emerges in an intermediate coupling regime at half -filling, which is sandwiched between a 120 degrees antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and a metallic phase as a function of on -site repulsion U. In this work, we examine the mechanism of the CSL and complex phase diagram via analytic analysis and numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. First, we identify an exact Berry -phase -like sign structure in the partition function of the model at arbitrary U, which is originated from the Fermi sign structure at U = 0.The spin and charge degrees of freedom are generally entangled via a singular phase string in such a many -body sign structure. In the large -U limit, the suppression of the charge fluctuation at half -filling can render the phase string ineffective, resulting in the AFM order. However, if one precisely switches off such a phase string in the DMRG calculation, the 120 degrees AFM is shown to survive all the way down to a much weaker U without the emergence of the CSL and metallic phases. It indicates that the phase -string sign structure plays the key role to mediate the mutual interaction between the charge and spin fluctuations, which results in the CSL and metallic phases at finite U. General implications for the Mott physics in the Hubbard model will also be discussed.

Abstract:We investigate a supersolid state in hardcore boson models on the face-centered-cubic (FCC) lattice. The supersolid state is characterized by a coexistence of crystalline order and superfluidity. Using a quantum Monte Carlo method based on the directed-loop algorithm, we calculate static structure factors and superfluid density at finite temperature, from which we obtain the phase diagram. The supersolid phase exists at intermediate fillings between a three-quarter-filled solid phase and a half-filled solid phase. We also discuss the mechanism of the supersolid state on the FCC lattice.

Abstract:Bosonic and fermionic Hubbard models on the checkerboard lattice are studied numerically for infinite on-site repulsion. At particle density n=1/4 and strong nearest-neighbor repulsion, insulating Valence Bond Crystals (VBC) of resonating particle pairs are stabilized. Their melting into superfluid/metallic phases under increasing hopping is investigated at T=0K. More specifically, we identify a novel and unconventional commensurate VBC supersolid region, precursor to the melting of the bosonic crystal. Hardcore bosons (spins) are compared to fermions (electrons), as well as positive to negative (frustrating) hoppings.

Abstract:Interacting crystalline SPT phases were first classified by Thorngren and Else through the crystalline equivalence principle, suggesting that a spatial group symmetry can be treated as if it were an internal symmetry group. Using techniques from topology we elucidate how this principle holds for one of the proposals for the interacting bosonic case and yet fails for weak free fermion phases. Last we show how a variant of the principle does hold for strong crystalline free fermion phases.

Novel Mechanism of Supersolid of Ultracold Polar Molecules in Optical Lattices

Abstract:We study the checkerboard supersolid of the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with the dipole-dipole interaction. This supersolid is different from all other supersolids found in lattice models in the sense that superflow paths through which interstitials or vacancies can hop freely are absent in the crystal. By focusing on repulsive interactions between interstitials, we reveal that the long-range tail of the dipole-dipole interaction have the role of increasing the energy cost of domain wall formations. This effect produces the supersolid by the second-order hopping process of defects. We also perform exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations and observe a novel double peak structure in the momentum distribution of bosons, which is a clear evidence for supersolid. This can be measured by the time-of-flight experiment in optical lattice systems.

Supersolid Phase of Cold Fermionic Polar Molecules in Two-Dimensional Optical Lattices

Abstract:We study a system of ultracold fermionic polar molecules in a two-dimensional square lattice interacting via both the long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range on-site attractive interaction. Singlet-superfluid, change density wave, and supersolid phases are found to exist in the system. We map out the zero-temperature phase diagram and find that the supersolid phase is considerably stabilized by the dipole-dipole interaction and thus can exist over a large region of filling factors. We study the melting of the supersolid phase with increasing temperature, map out a finite-temperature phase diagram of the system at fixed filling, and determine the parameter region where the supersolid phase can possibly be observed in experiments.
A Wavefunction Describing Superfluidity in A Perfect Crystal

Abstract:We propose a many-body wavefunction that exhibits both diagonal and off-diagonal long-range order. Incorporating short-range correlations due to interatomic repulsion, this wavefunction is shown to allow condensation of zero-point lattice vibrations and phase rigidity. In the presence of an external velocity field, such a perfect crystal will develop non-classical rotational inertia, exhibiting supersolid behaviour. In a sample calculation we show that the super fluid fraction in this state can be as large as of order 0.01 in a reasonable range of microscopic parameters. The relevance to the recent experimental evidence of a supersolid state given by Kim and Chan is discussed.

Abstract:A chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase has been recently reported in the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at half-filling. It emerges in an intermediate coupling regime, which is sandwiched between a $120^\circ$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and a metallic phase as a function of on-site repulsion $U$. In this work, we examine how the charge fluctuation may cause the CSL and complex phase diagram. We first identify an exact sign structure of the model at arbitrary temperature, sample size, and doping, which is reduced from the original Fermi exchange signs of the electrons by finite $U$. In particular, the spin and charge degrees of freedom are generally entangled via the phase-string in the sign structure. By precisely switching off such a phase-string, the CSL phase is shown to disappear, with only the $120^\circ$ AFM order remaining down to weak $U$ by a density matrix renormalization group calculation. Here the charge fluctuation is effectively decoupled from the AFM background, which is a $120^\circ$ AFM order due to a geometric Berry phase in the sign structure of the triangular lattice. General implications for the Mott physics will also be discussed.

Abstract:Hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsion are a prototypical example of a system with supersolid behavior on a lattice. We show that in this model the physical origin of the supersolid phase can be understood quantitatively and analytically by constructing quasiparticle excitations of defects that are moving on an ordered background. The location of the solid to supersolid phase transition line is predicted from the effective model for both positive and negative (frustrated) hopping parameters. For positive hopping parameters the calculations agree very accurately with numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The numerical results indicate that the supersolid to superfluid transition is first order.

Abstract:In this paper we address the behavior of the superfluid transition temperature Tc in the attractive Hubbard model. The attractive Hubbard model can be regarded as the generalization of the BCS to Bose-Einstein condensation BEC crossover to a lattice and, as such, may have implications for future optical lattice studies. Nevertheless, the BEC limit of the Hubbard model is very different from that of the better-studied Fermi gases, owing to the strong intersite repulsion between pairs. Here we address systematically the effects of pairing fluctuations for all filling fractions over the entire range of attractive interaction strength. A central conclusion of our work is that in a lattice, around half filling, the smooth evolution from the BCS to the BEC limits is interrupted: Tc vanishes when the system approaches the bosonic regime with increasing interaction strength. We suggest that this interruption of crossover may signal a quantum critical transition to another form of superfluid not continuously connected to a BCS-like phase. A simple variational ansatz for an alternate ground state in this more strongly coupled superfluid is presented. A generalization of the s-wave Hubbard model to d-wave pairing allows us to address issues of relevance to high-Tc superconductivity. The phase diagram representing the pairing or pseudogap onset temperature T* and Tc shows that here too one observes a vanishing of Tc when T* becomes sufficiently large. Given this predicted breakdown of the crossover, and given the striking similarity to features of the cuprate phase diagram, we suggest that future experiments on ultracold fermions in optical lattices should not be exclusively limited to the repulsive Hubbard model, but should address the attractive model in order to elucidate features of high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:We investigate the superfluid fraction of crystalline stationary states within the framework of mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Our primary focus is on a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a non-local soft-core interaction, where the superfluid fraction is described by a rank-2 tensor. We then calculate the superfluid fraction tensor for crystalline states exhibiting triangular, square, and stripe geometries across a broad range of interaction parameters. Factors leading to an anisotropic superfluid fraction tensor are also considered. We also refine the Leggett bounds for the superfluid fraction of the 2D system. We systematically compare these bounds to our full numerical results, and other results in the literature. This work is of direct relevance to other supersolid systems of current interest, such as supersolids produced using dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates.

Dislocation-induced superfluidity in a model supersolid

Abstract:Motivated by recent experiments on the supersolid behavior of $^4$He, we study the effect of an edge dislocation in promoting superfluidity in a Bose crystal. Using Landau theory, we couple the elastic strain field of the dislocation to the superfluid density, and use a linear analysis to show that superfluidity nucleates on the dislocation before occurring in the bulk of the solid. Moving beyond the linear analysis, we develop a systematic perturbation theory in the weakly nonlinear regime, and use this method to integrate out transverse degrees of freedom and derive a one-dimensional Landau equation for the superfluid order parameter. We then extend our analysis to a network of dislocation lines, and derive an XY model for the dislocation network by integrating over fluctuations in the order parameter. Our results show that the ordering temperature for the network has a sensitive dependence on the dislocation density, consistent with numerous experiments that find a clear connection between the sample quality and the supersolid response.

Peculiar Supersolid Phases Induced by Frustrated Tunneling in the Extended Bose-Hubbard Model

Abstract:By using a state-of-the-art tensor network state method, we study the ground-state phase diagram of an extended Bose-Hubbard model on the square lattice with frustrated next-nearest-neighbor tunneling. In the hard-core limit, tunneling frustration stabilizes a peculiar half-supersolid phase with one sublattice being superfluid and the other sublattice being Mott insulator away from half filling. In the soft-core case, the model shows very rich phase diagrams above half filling, including three different types of supersolid phases depending on the interaction parameters. The considered model provides a promising route to experimentally search for a novel stable supersolid state induced by frustrated tunneling in the region below half filling with dipolar atoms or molecules.

Abstract:By using the dual vortex method (DVM), we develop systematically a simple and effective scheme to use the vortex degree of freedoms on dual lattices to characterize the symmetry breaking patterns of the boson insulating states in the direct lattices. Then we apply our scheme to study quantum phases and phase transitions in an extended boson Hubbard model slightly away from 1/3 (2/3) filling on frustrated lattices such as triangular and Kagome lattice. In a triangular lattice at 1/3, we find a X-CDW, a stripe CDW phase which was found previously by a density operator formalism (DOF). Most importantly, we also find a new CDW-VB phase which has both local CDW and local VB orders, in sharp contrast to a bubble CDW phase found previously by the DOF. In the Kagome lattice at 1/3, we find a VBS phase and a 6-fold CDW phase. Most importantly, we also identify a CDW-VB phase which has both local CDW and local VB orders which was found in previous QMC simulations. We also study several other phases which are not found by the DVM. By analyzing carefully the saddle point structures of the dual gauge fields in the translational symmetry breaking sides and pushing the effective actions slightly away from the commensurate filling f=1/3 (2/3), we classified all the possible types of supersolids and analyze their stability conditions. In a triangular lattice, there are X-CDW supersolid, stripe CDW supersolid, but absence of any valence bond supersolid (VB-SS). There are also a new kind of supersolid: CDW-VB supersolid. In a Kagome lattice, there are 6-fold CDW supersolid, stripe CDW supersolid, but absence of any valence bond supersolid (VB-SS). There are also a new kind of supersolid: CDW-VB supersolid. We show that independent of the types of the SS, the quantum phase transitions from solids to supersolids driven by a chemical potential are in the same universality class as that from a Mott insulator to a superfluid, therefore have exact exponents z=2, ν=1/2, η=0 (with logarithmic corrections). Excitation spectra of all these insulating phases and supersolid phases are also studied. Implications on QMC simulations with both nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions in both lattices are given. Some possible intrinsic problems of the DOF in identifying the insulating phases are also pointed out.
Superconducting Pairing Symmetries In Anisotropic Triangular Quantum Antiferromagnets

Abstract:Motivated by the recent discovery of a low temperature spin liquid phase in layered organic compound kappa-(ET)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) which becomes a superconductor under pressure, we examine the phase transition of Mott insulating and superconducting (SC) states in a Hubbard-Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice. We use a renormalized mean field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected BCS wave functions. The half filled electron system is a Mott insulator at large onsite repulsion U, and is a superconductor at a moderate U. The symmetry of the SC state depends on the anisotropy, and is gapful with d(x2-y2)+id(xy) symmetry near the isotropic limit and is gapless with d(x2-y2) symmetry at small anisotropy ratio.
