An Investigation of Economies of Scale of Migratory Apiaries from 2007 to 2010 Based on 80 Apiaries in Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province

Abstract:Beekeeping scale is one of main factors affecting the economic returns of an apiary. What size of scale could bring the best economic returns is one focus of attention for beekeeping industry insiders. A survey was carried out to investigate the economic returns of different scales of 80 migratory apiaries, which mainly produce honey with some royal jelly and pollen from 2007 to 2010, in Jinyun County, Zhejiang Province. The result showed that most of the scales of 80 migratory apiaries consist of 2-4 people in the current beekeeping mode of production and productivity level. Among them, four-people family apiary to raise 185-195 colonies was the best moderate scale. Five-people apiary deserves attention and expectations,because such scale receives the best economic returns despite its slow development.
