Abstract:Dimensionality reduction has received much attention in image retrieval. Even though the dimension of image feature vectors is normally very high, the embedded dimension is much lower. Before we utilize any image retrieval technique, it is beneficial to first perform dimensionality reduction. Principal component analysis (PCA) is one of the popular methods for dimensionality reduction, and is shown to be optimal when the underlying structure of data points is linear. However, it fails to discover the nonlinear structure if the data lie on a low-dimensional manifold embedded in a high-dimensional feature space. In this paper, we propose a geometrically motivated linear dimensionality reduction algorithm, called Locality Preserving Projection (LPP), for representing high dimensional data lying on a low dimensional manifold, which has locality preserving properties. The algorithm provides a computationally efficient approach to linear dimensionality reduction. Moreover, a novel relevance feedback scheme on image manifold is proposed. Experimental results on real-world image collections have shown the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed approaches.

Abstract:Given i.i.d. observations uniformly distributed on a closed manifold $\mathcal{M}\subseteq \mathbb{R}^p$, we study the spectral properties of the associated empirical graph Laplacian based on a Gaussian kernel. Our main results are non-asymptotic error bounds, showing that the eigenvalues and eigenspaces of the empirical graph Laplacian are close to the eigenvalues and eigenspaces of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of $\mathcal{M}$. In our analysis, we connect the empirical graph Laplacian to kernel principal component analysis, and consider the heat kernel of $\mathcal{M}$ as reproducing kernel feature map. This leads to novel points of view and allows to leverage results for empirical covariance operators in infinite dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove an upper bound on the second non-zero Laplacian eigenvalue on $n$-dimensional real projective space. The sharp result for 2-dimensions was shown by Nadirashvili and Penskoi and later by Karpukhin when the metric degenerates to that of the disjoint union of a round projective space and a sphere. That conjecture is open in higher dimensions, but this paper proves it up to a constant factor that tends to 1 as the dimension tends to infinity. Also, we introduce a topological argument that deals with the orthogonality conditions in a single step proof.

Abstract:In his seminal 1943 paper F. Rellich proved that, in the complement of a cavity $\Omega = \{x\in \mathbb R^n\mid |x|>R_0\}$, there exist no nontrivial solution $f$ of the Helmholtz equation $\Delta f = - \lambda f$, when $\lambda>0$, such that $\int_{\Omega} |f|^2 dx < \infty$. In this note we generalise this result by showing that if $\int_{\Omega} |f|^p dx < \infty$ for some $0<p\leq \frac{2n}{n-1}$, then $f\equiv 0$. This result is sharp since for any $p> \frac{2n}{n-1}$, eigenfunctions do exist in $\Omega$.

Abstract:For the eigenvalue problem of the Dirichlet Laplacian on a bounded domain in Euclidean space R-n, we obtain estimates for the upper bounds of the gaps between consecutive eigenvalues which are the best possible in terms of the orders of the eigenvalues. Therefore, it is reasonable to conjecture that this type of estimate also holds for the eigenvalue problem on a Riemannian manifold. We give some particular examples.

Abstract:One of the central problems in machine learning and pattern recognition is to develop appropriate representations for complex data. We consider the problem of constructing a representation for data lying on a low-dimensional manifold embedded in a high-dimensional space. Drawing on the correspondence between the graph Laplacian, the Laplace Beltrami operator on the manifold, and the connections to the heat equation, we propose a geometrically motivated algorithm for representing the high-dimensional data. The algorithm provides a computationally efficient approach to nonlinear dimensionality reduction that has locality-preserving properties and a natural connection to clustering. Some potential applications and illustrative examples are discussed.

Abstract: The Laplacian matrix of a simple graph is the difference of the diagonal matrix of vertex degree and the (0,1) adjacency matrix. In the past decades, the Laplacian spectrum has received much more and more attention, since it has been applied to several fields, such as randomized algorithms, combinatorial optimization problems and machine learning. This paper is primarily a survey of various aspects of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of a graph for the past teens. In addition, some new unpublished results and questions are concluded. Emphasis is given on classifications of the upper and lower bounds for the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs (including some special graphs, such as trees, bipartite graphs, triangular-free graphs, cubic graphs, etc.) as a function of other graph invariants, such as degree sequence, the average 2-degree, diameter, the maximal independence number, the maximal matching number, vertex connectivity, the domination number, the number of the spanning trees, etc.

Abstract:Abstract Let be the simplicial complex whose vertices are the nontrivial subspaces of and whose simplices correspond to families of subspaces forming a flag. Let be the ‐dimensional weighted upper Laplacian on . The spectrum of was first studied by Garland, who obtained a lower bound on its nonzero eigenvalues. Here, we focus on the case. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of as tends to infinity. In particular, we show that for large enough , has exactly distinct eigenvalues, and that every eigenvalue of tends to as goes to infinity. This solves the zero‐dimensional case of a conjecture of Papikian.

Abstract:In this study, the bounds for eigenvalues of the Laplacian operator on an L-shaped domain are determined. By adopting some special functions in Goerisch method for lower bounds and in traditional Rayleigh-Ritz method for upper bounds, very accurate bounds to eigenvalues for the problem are obtained. Numerical results show that these functions can also be successfully used to solve the problem on the region with other reentrant angle.

Abstract:Let $L$ be the distinguished Laplacian on the Iwasawa $AN$ group associated with a semisimple Lie group $G$. Assume $F$ is a Borel function on $\mathbb{R}^+$. We give a condition on $F$ such that the kernels of the functions $F(L)$ are uniformly bounded. This condition involves the decay of $F$ only and not its derivatives. By a known correspondence, this implies pointwise estimates for a wide range of functions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on symmetric spaces. In particular, when $G$ is of real rank one and $F(x)={\rm e}^{it\sqrt x}\psi(\sqrt x)$, our bounds are sharp.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the first Dirichlet eigenfunction of the Laplacian on certain convex domains of the model spaces $\mathbb S^2,\mathbb R^2$ and $\mathbb H^2$. We prove that the first eigenfunction has exactly one non-degenerate critical point (a maximum, if the eigenfunction is chosen positive). The proof consists in relating the critical points of the eigenfunction with the critical points of a suitable auxiliary function, jointly with a topological degree argument.

Abstract:This article studies the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian equations Δu =-λ u, χ∈ Ω, u=0, δ∈Ω, where Ω ⊂ Rn is a smooth bounded convex domain. By using the method of appropriate barrier function combined with the maximum principle, authors obtain a sharp lower bound of the difference of the first two eigenvalues for the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem.
