Abstract:We present here a phenomenological solid quark star pulsar model to interpret the observed thermal X-ray emission of isolated pulsars. The heat capacity for solid quark stars was found to be quite small, so that the residual internal stellar heat gained at the birth of the star could be dissipated in an extremely short timescale. However, the bombardment induced by backflowing plasma at the poles of solid quark stars would get the stars be reheated, so that long term soft X-ray emission can be sustained. Such a scenario could be used for those X-ray pulsars with significant magnetospheric activities, and their cooling processes would thus be established. Dim X-ray isolated neutron stars (XDINs) as well as compact central objects (CCOs) have been observed with dominant soft X-ray radiation combined with little magnetospheric manifestations. Such sources could be solid quark stars accreting in the propeller regime.

Toward an Understanding of Thermal X-ray Emission of Pulsars

Abstract:We present a theoretical model for the thermal X-ray emission properties and cooling behaviors of isolated pulsars, assuming that pulsars are solid quark stars. We calculate the heat capacity for such a quark star, including the component of the crystalline lattice and that of the extremely relativistic electron gas. The results show that the residual thermal energy cannot sustain the observed thermal X-ray luminosities seen in typical isolated X-ray pulsars. We conclude that other heating mechanisms must be in operation if the pulsars are in fact solid quark stars. Two possible heating mechanisms are explored. Firstly, for pulsars with little magnetospheric activities, accretion from the interstellar medium or from the material in the associated supernova remnants may power the observed thermal emission. In the propeller regime, a disk-accretion rate M˙∼1% of the Eddington rate with an accretion onto the stellar surface at a rate of ∼0.1%M˙ could explain the observed emission luminosities of the dim isolated neutron stars and the central compact objects. Secondly, for pulsars with significant magnetospheric activities, the pulsar spindown luminosities may have been as the sources of the thermal energy via reversing plasma current flows. A phenomenological study between pulsar bolometric X-ray luminosities and the spin energy loss rates presents the probable existence of a 1/2-law or a linear law, i.e. Lbol∞∝E˙1/2 or Lbol∞∝E˙. This result together with the thermal properties of solid quark stars allow us to calculate the thermal evolution of such stars. Thermal evolution curves, or cooling curves, are calculated and compared with the ‘temperature-age’ data obtained from 17 active X-ray pulsars. It is shown that the bolometric X-ray observations of these sources are consistent with the solid quark star pulsar model.

Abstract:Members of the family of pulsar-like stars are distinguished by their different manifestations observed, i.e., radio pulsars, accretion-driven X-ray pulsars, X-ray bursts, anomalous X-ray pulsars/soft gamma-ray repeaters, certral compact objects, and dim thermal neutron stars. Though one may conventionally think that these stars are normal neutron stars, it is still an open issue whether they are actually neutron stars or quark stars, as no convincing work, either theoretical from first principles or observational, has confirmed Baade-Zwicky's original idea that supemovae produce neutron stars. After introducing briefly the history of pulsars and quark stars, the author summarizes the recent achievements in his pulsar group, including quark matter phenomenology at low temperature, starquakes of solid pulsars, low-mass quark stars, and the pulsar magnetospheric activities.

Abstract:The state of super-dense matter is essential for us to understand the nature of pulsars;however,nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics makes it very difficult to make direct calculations of the state of cold matter at realistic baryon number densities inside compact stars.Nevertheless,from an observational point of view,it is conjectured that pulsars could be made up of quark clusters since the strong coupling between quarks might render the quarks to be grouped in clusters.In this paper,we attempt to find an equation of state of condensed quark-cluster matter in a phenomenological way.Supposing that the quark-clusters could be analogized to inert gases,we apply here the corresponding-state approach to derive the equation of state of quark-cluster matter,as was similarly demonstrated for nuclear and neutron-star matter in the 1970s.According to the calculations that we have presented,the quark-cluster stars,which are composed of quark-cluster matter,could have a high maximum mass that is consistent with observations and,in turn,further observations of pulsar mass could also place a constraint on the properties of quark-cluster matter.We will also briefly discuss the melting heat during the solid-liquid phase conversion and its related astrophysical consequences.
A Polytropic Model of Quark Stars

Abstract:A polytropic quark star model is suggested in order to establish a general framework in which theoretical quark star models could be tested by observations. The key difference between polytropic quark stars and the polytropic model studied previously for normal (i.e. non-quarkian) stars is related to two issues: (i) a constant term representing the contribution of vacuum energy may be added in the energy density and the pressure for a quark star, but not for a normal star; (ii) the quark star models with non-vanishing density at the stellar surface are not avoidable due to the strong interaction between quarks. The first one implies that the vacuum inside a quark star is different from that outside, while the second one is relevant to the effect of color confinement. The polytropic equations of state are stiffer than that derived in conventional realistic models (e.g. the bag model) for quark matter, and pulsar-like stars calculated with a polytropic equation of state could then have high maximum masses (>2M⊙). Quark stars can also be very low massive, and be still gravitationally stable even if the polytropic index, n, is greater than 3. All these would result in different mass-radius relations, which could be tested by observations. In addition, substantial strain energy would develop in a solid quark star during its accretion/spindown phase, and could be high enough to take a star-quake. The energy released during star-quakes could be as high as ∼1047 ergs if the tangential pressure is ∼10-6 higher than the radial one.

Abstract:The state of cold quark matter at supra-nuclear density, depending on the non-perturbative nature of quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD), is essential for modelling pulsars. It is conventionally thought that the state equation of dense matter softens and thus cannot result in high maximum mass if pulsars are quark stars. However, this standard point of view would be revisited and updated if the strong coupling between quarks at realistic baryon densities of compact stars could render quarks grouped in quark-clusters, because the state equation of clustering quark matter stiffs to support compact stars with maximum mass M max > 2M⊙. Although the hypothetical quark-clusters has not been confirmed due to the lack of both theoretical and experimental evidence, the astrophysical observations of pulsars (e.g. pulsar-mass) could help us to explore the properties of cold quark matter.

Abstract:A pulsar-like compact star is the rump left behind after a supernova where normal baryonic matter is intensely compressed by gravity, but the real state of such compressed baryonic matter is still not well understood because of the non-perturbative nature of the fundamental color interaction. We argue that pulsars could be of condensed matter of quark clusters, i.e., "quark-cluster stars" which distinguish from conventional neutron and quark stars. In comparison with 2-flavour symmetric micro-nuclei, a quark-cluster star could simply be considered as a macro-nucleus with 3-flavour symmetry. New research achievements both theoretical and observational are briefly presented.

Abstract:Two kinds of difficulties have challenged the physics community for many years: (1) knowing nature's building blocks (particle physics) and (2) understanding interacting many-body systems (many-body physics). Both of them exist in the research of quark matter and compact stars. This paper addresses the possibility that quark clustering, rather than a color super-conducting state, could occur in cold quark matter at realistic baryon densities of compact stars, since a weakly coupling treatment of the interaction between quarks might not be reliable. Cold quark matter is conjectured to be in a solid state if thermal kinematic energy is much lower than the interaction energy of quark clusters. Different manifestations of pulsar-like compact stars are discussed, as well as modeled in a regime of solid quark stars.

Abstract:The gravitational radiation from compact pulsar-like stars depends on the state of dense matter at supranuclear densities, i.e., the nature of pulsar (e.g., either normal neutron stars or quark stars). The solid quark star model is focused for the nature of pulsar-like compact objects. Possible gravitational emission of quark stars (either fluid or solid) during the birth and later lifetime is discussed. Several observational features to distinguish various models for pulsar-like stars are proposed. It is suggested that the gravitational wave behaviors should be mass-dependent. Based on the data from the second LIGO science run, the upper limits of R·θ1/5 and thus M·θ3/5 (M: mass, R: radius, and θ: wobble angle) are provided for those targets of millisecond pulsars.

Abstract:More and more observational hints of quark stars are proposed these years though pulsars are considered conventionally to be normal neutron stars. The existence of low-mass quark stars is a direct consequence of the possibility that pulsar-like stars are actually quark stars, because of the ability that quark matter can confine itself by color interaction. After a brief introduction to the study of quark stars, the various astrophysical implications of low-mass quark stars are investigated. It is addressed that some of the transient unidentified γ -ray sources are probably merging quark stars. The observability of low-mass quark stars is discussed.
Thermal and Non-thermal Radiation from Pulsars: Hints of Physics

Abstract:Thermal and non-thermal radiation from pulsars carries significant information from surface and would have profound implications on the state of dense matter in compact stars. For the non-thermal radio emission, subpulse drifting phenomena suggest the existence of Ruderman-Sutherland-like gap-sparking and strong binding of particles on pulsar polar caps. While conventional neutron star models can hardly provide such a high binding energy, the strong self-bound surface of quark-cluster stars can naturally solve this problem. As for the thermal one, the featureless X-ray spectra of pulsars may indicate a bare surface without atmosphere, and the ultrarelativistic fireball of gamma-ray bursts and supernovae would also require strong self-bound surfaces. Recent achievements in measuring pulsar mass and mass-radius relation further indicate a stiff equation of state and a self-bound surface. Therefore, we conjecture that matters inside pulsar-like compact stars could be in a quark-cluster phase. The surface of quark-cluster stars is chromatically confined and could initially be bare. Such a surface can not only explain above features, but may also promote a successful core-collapse supernova, and the hydro-cyclotron oscillation of the electron sea above the surface could be responsible for those absorption features detected in the X-ray spectrum.

Abstract:The nature of pulsars is still unknown because of the non-perturbative effects of the fundamental strong interaction, so various models of pulsar inner structures are suggested, either for conventional neutron stars or quark stars. Additionally, a quark-cluster matter state is conjectured for cold matter at supranuclear density, and as a result pulsars can be quark-cluster stars. Besides understanding the different manifestations, the most important issue is to find an effective way to observationally differentiate these models. X-ray polarimetry plays an important role here. The thermal x-ray polarization of quark/quark-cluster stars is focused on, and while the thermal x-ray linear polarization percentage is typically higher than similar to 10% in normal neutron star models, the percentage of quark/quark-cluster stars is almost zero. This could then be an effective method to identify quark/quark-cluster stars by soft x-ray polarimetry. We are therefore expecting to detect thermal x-ray polarization in the coming decades.

Abstract:It is conventionally thought that the state equation of dense matter softens and thus cannot result in high maximum mass if pulsars are quark stars and that a recently discovered 2M(circle dot) pulsar (PSR J1614-2230) may make pulsars unlikely to be quark stars. However, this standard point of view would be revisited and updated if quark clustering could occur in cold quark matter because of the strong coupling between quarks at realistic baryon densities in compact stars. It can be argued that the state equation of clustered quark matter stiffens to support compact stars with maximum mass M-max > 2M(circle dot). In this brief note, it is demonstrated that large parameter space ranges are allowed for M-max > 2M(circle dot) in a Lennard-Jones model of clustered quark matter and the newly measured highest mass of PSR J1614-2230 would be meaningful for constraining the number of quarks inside a single quark-cluster to be N-q less than or similar to 10(3).

Abstract:During the 1960s and 1970s,hadrons were suggested to have substructures,i.e. quarks.In the 1970s,asymptotic freedom was found in deep inelastic scattering experiments and soon proved by theory,which inspired the idea of quark matter.Does quark matter exist? To prove the existence of quark matter or not will put considerable constrain on current theory of strong interaction.Quark star is one of the possible existences of quark matter.Studying of quark star is an effective way to understand superanuclear physics.The history of pulsar, quark star and neutron star is briefly reviewed in§1.We introduce the development of quark star theory in the early stage and the recent development of color-superconducting.The relation between pulsar,neutron star and particle physics is also presented.The difficulties to distinguish quark stars and neutron stars are mentioned.In§2,we present phenomenological description of quark matter.Phase diagrams considering color-superconducting and quark-clustering are shown.Possible color-superconducting phase such as color-flavor locked phase and two-flavor color-superconducting phase are discussed.The highly non-perturbation property of quantum chromodynamics and the difficulty in lattice quantum chromodynamics are discussed.Possible evidences for quark matter from heavy ion collider experiments are mentioned.In§3,we summa- rized the general properties of quark stars and their differences from neutron stars,including the surface electron layer,the idea of bare quark star,the mass-radius relation,and the upper limit of spin period.Recent research progresses in the study of quark star are summarized in§4 and§5.Possible ways to distinguish between quark star and normal neutron star are discussed,i.e. by featureless spectrum,low mass and small radius,and spin period less than 0.5 millisecond. Several quark star candidates are suggested,i.e.the accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pul- sar SAX J1808.4-3658,RX J1856-3754 which has quite good featureless black body spectrum, and PSR B0943+10 which is likely to have small radius.Infrared emission and possible exis- tence of accretion disk around newly-discovered pulsar-like stars are also introduced.Theoretical works including possible formation scenarios of quark stars and the connection to supernova and gamma-ray burst,the glitch phenomenon and star quark model,and quark star surface property are presented.Finally,a short introduction of recent work on quark matter as cosmic rays is given in§6.

Abstract:The nature of pulsar-like compact stars is still in controversy although the first pulsar was found more than 40 years ago. Generally speaking, conventional neutron stars and non-mainstream quark stars are two types of models to describe the inner structure of pulsars, with the former composed mainly of hadrons and the latter of a peculiar kind of matter whose state equation should be understood in the level of quarks rather than hadrons. To construct a more realistic model from both theoretical and observational points of view, we conjecture that pulsars could be "quark-cluster stars" which are composed of quark-clusters with almost equal numbers of up, down and strange quarks. Clustering quark matter could be the result of strong coupling between quarks inside realistic compact stars. The lightest quark clusters could be of H-dibaryons, while quark clusters could also be heavier with more quarks. Being essentially related to the non-perturbative quantum-chromo dynamics (QCD), the state of supra-nuclear condensed matter is really difficult to obtain strictly by only theoretical QCD-calculations, and we expect, nevertheless, that astrophysical observations could help us to have a final solution.

Abstract:The magnetar model and a solid quark star model for anomalous X-ray pulsars/soft gamma-ray repeaters (AXPs/SGRs) are discussed. Different manifestations of pulsar-like stars are speculated to be due to both their nature (e.g., mass and strain) and their nurture (ambience, and consequently the type of accretion) in the solid quark star scenario. Relevant arguments made by the author's group, including a debate on solid cold quark matter, are briefly summarized too.
