Abstract:This note is concerned with the connections between the conformal group and the quantum states of photons. It is shown that there exist analogies between the photonic quantum states and the conformal group, namely, the time-development operator (with a free Hamiltonian), displacement and squeezing operators of the vacuum state corresponds to the dilatation, translation, proper Lorentz transformations, respectively, and that the three quantum states of photons ({\it i.e.}, Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state) in quantum optics thus bear some analogy to the above three transformations in the conformal group. Based on this comparison, we argue by analogy that if the phase transformation operators acting on a vacuum state (hence the Fock state, coherent state and squeezed state are generated) are truly exactly analogous to the conformal transformations, then a fourth quantum state of photons (referred to as the {\it conformal state}), which corresponds to the {\it special conformal} transformation (acceleration transformation) and will therefore be of special physical interest, can be suggested.

Abstract:Coherent states have three main properties: coherence, overcompleteness and intrinsic geometrization. These unique properties play fundamental roles in field theory, especially, in the description of classical domains and quantum fluctuations of physical fields, in the calculations of physical processes involving infinite number of virtual particles, in the derivation of functional integrals and various effective field theories, also in the determination of long-range orders and collective excitations, and finally in the exploration of origins of topologically nontrivial gauge fields and associated gauge degrees of freedom.
Ultra-quantum coherent states in a single finite quantum system

Abstract:A set of $n$ coherent states is introduced in a quantum system with $d$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d)$. It is shown that they resolve the identity, and also have a discrete isotropy property. A finite cyclic group acts on the set of these coherent states, and partitions it into orbits. A $n$-tuple representation of arbitrary states in $H(d)$, analogous to the Bargmann representation, is defined. There are two other important properties of these coherent states which make them `ultra-quantum'. The first property is related to the Grothendieck formalism which studies the `edge' of the Hilbert space and quantum formalisms. Roughly speaking the Grothendieck theorem considers a `classical' quadratic form ${\mathfrak C}$ that uses complex numbers in the unit disc, and a `quantum' quadratic form ${\mathfrak Q}$ that uses vectors in the unit ball of the Hilbert space. It shows that if ${\mathfrak C}\le 1$, the corresponding ${\mathfrak Q}$ might take values greater than $1$, up to the complex Grothendieck constant $k_G$. ${\mathfrak Q}$ related to these coherent states is shown to take values in the `Grothendieck region' $(1,k_G)$, which is classically forbidden in the sense that ${\mathfrak C}$ does not take values in it. The second property complements this, showing that these coherent states violate logical Bell-like inequalities (which for a single quantum system are quantum versions of the Frechet probabilistic inequalities). In this sense also, our coherent states are deep into the quantum region.

Abstract:We provide a group theory approach to coherent states describing quantum space-time and its properties. This provides a relativistic framework for the metric of a Riemmanian space with bosonic and fermionic coordinates, its continuum and discrete states, and a kind of {\it"quantum optics"} for the space-time. {\bf New} results of this paper are: (i) The space-time is described as a physical coherent state of the complete covering of the SL(2C) group, eg the Metaplectic group Mp(n). (ii) (The discrete structure arises from its two irreducible: $\textit{even}$ $(2n)$ and $\textit{odd}$ $(2n\;+\;1)\;$ representations, ($n = 1,\, 2, \,3\,...$ ), spanning the complete Hilbert space $\mathcal{H} = \mathcal{H}_{odd}\oplus \mathcal{H}_{even}$. Such a global or {\it complete} covering guarantees the CPT symmetry and unitarity. Large $n$ yields the classical and continuum manifold, as it must be. (iii) The coherent and squeezed states and Wigner functions of quantum-space-time for black holes and de Sitter, and (iv) for the quantum space-imaginary time (instantons), black holes in particular. They encompass the semiclassical space-time behaviour plus high quantum phase oscillations, and notably account for the classical-quantum gravity duality and trans-Planckian domain. The Planck scale consistently corresponds to the coherent state eigenvalue $\alpha = 0$ (and to the $n = 0$ level in the discrete representation). It is remarkable the power of coherent states in describing both continuum and discrete space-time. The quantum space-time description is {\it regular}, there is no any space-time singularity here, as it must be.

Abstract:This paper studies coherent quantization, the way operators in the quantum space of a coherent space—defined in the recent book 'Coherent Quantum Mechanics' by the first author—can be studied in terms of objects defined directly on the coherent space. The results may be viewed as a generalization of geometric quantization, including the non-unitary case. Care has been taken to work with the weakest meaningful topology and to assume as little as possible about the spaces and groups involved. Unlike in geometric quantization, the groups are not assumed to be compact, locally compact, or finite-dimensional. This implies that the setting can be successfully applied to quantum field theory, where the groups involved satisfy none of these properties. The paper characterizes linear operators acting on the quantum space of a coherent space in terms of their coherent matrix elements. Coherent maps and associated symmetry groups for coherent spaces are introduced, and formulas are derived for the quantization of coherent maps. The importance of coherent maps for quantum mechanics is due to the fact that there is a quantization map that associates homomorphically with every coherent map a linear operator from the quantum space into itself. The quantization map generalizes the second quantization procedure for free classical fields to symmetry groups of general coherent spaces. Field quantization is obtained by specialization to Klauder spaces, whose quantum spaces are the bosonic Fock spaces. Implied by the new approach is a short, coordinate-free derivation of all basic properties of creation and annihilation operators in Fock spaces.

Abstract:We study the transformation between quantum states under incoherent operations and unitary incoherent operations. In high dimensional systems, we show any two pure states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations. For mixed states, we show any two incoherent states can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations. Furthermore, we show any incoherent states can be transformed by any mixed states under incoherent operations. In qubit systems, we prove the necessary and sufficient condition for the transformation between any two mixed states by incoherent operations alternatively and obtain the corresponding incoherent operations. Moreover we prove any two mixed qubit states with nonzero coherence can be transformed into each other under incoherent operations if and only if they can be transformed into each other under unitary incoherent operations.

Abstract:We define generalized Gaussian states for quantum cosmological models based on the su(1,1) algebra, with particular emphasis on its realization in group field theory for a single field mode, and study their semiclassical properties. These states are generalizations of coherent, squeezed, and thermal states considered previously. As two possible characterizations of semiclassicality, we contrast the requirement of small relative fluctuations in volume and energy with the saturation of the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty principle. We find that for the most general class of states, the appearance of small relative fluctuations, which we take as the main criterion relevant for the emergence of cosmology, is mostly determined by the amount of displacement used to define the state. Quantum circuit synthesis for generalized coherent states

Abstract:We present a method that outputs a sequence of simple unitary operations to prepare a given quantum state that is a generalized coherent state. Our method takes as inputs the expectation values of some relevant observables on the state to be prepared. Such expectation values can be estimated by performing projective measurements on $O(M^3 \log(M/\delta)/\epsilon^2)$ copies of the state, where $M$ is the dimension of an associated Lie algebra, $\epsilon$ is a precision parameter, and $1-\delta$ is the required confidence level. The method can be implemented on a classical computer and runs in time $O(M^4 \log(M/\epsilon))$. It provides $O(M \log(M/\epsilon))$ simple unitaries that form the sequence. The number of all computational resources is then polynomial in $M$, making the whole procedure very efficient in those cases where $M$ is significantly smaller than the Hilbert space dimension. When the algebra of relevant observables is determined by some Pauli matrices, each simple unitary may be easily decomposed into two-qubit gates. We discuss applications to quantum state tomography and classical simulations of quantum circuits.

Coherent states for ladder operators of general order related to exceptional orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:We construct the coherent states of general order, m, for the ladder operators and , which act on rational deformations of the harmonic oscillator. The position wavefunctions of the eigenvectors involve type III Hermite exceptional orthogonal polynomials. We plot energy expectations, time-dependent position probability densities for the coherent states and for the even and odd cat states, Wigner functions, and Heisenberg uncertainty relations. We find generally non-classical behaviour, with one exception: there is a regime of large magnitude of the coherent state parameter, z, where the otherwise indistinct position probability density separates into m + 1 distinct wavepackets oscillating and colliding in the potential, forming interference fringes when they collide. The Mandel Q parameter is calculated to find sub-Poissonian statistics, another indicator of non-classical behaviour. We plot the position standard deviation and find squeezing in many of the cases. We calculate the two 'photon' number probability density for the output state when the m = 4, coherent states (where μ labels the lowest weight in the superposition) are placed on one arm of a beamsplitter. We find that it does not factorize, again indicating non-classical behaviour. Calculation of the linear entropy for this beamsplitter output state shows significant entanglement, another non-classical feature. We also construct linearized versions, , of the annihilation operators and their coherent states and calculate the same properties that we investigate for the coherent states. For these we find similar behaviour to the coherent states, at much smaller magnitudes of z, but comparable average energies.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct the phase space of a constantly curved tetrahedron with fixed triangle areas in terms of a pair of Darboux coordinates called the length and twist coordinates, which are in analogy to the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for flat connections, and their quantization. The curvature is identified to the value of the cosmological constant, either positive or negative. The physical Hilbert space is given by the $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ intertwiner space. We show that the quantum trace of quantum monodromies, defining the quantum length operators, form a fusion algebra and describe their representation theory. We also construct the coherent states in the physical Hilbert space labeled by the length and twist coordinates. These coherent states describe quantum curved tetrahedra and peak at points of the tetrahedron phase space. This works is closely related to 3+1 dimensional Loop Quantum Gravity with a non-vanishing cosmological constant. The coherent states constructed herein serve as good candidates for the application to the spinfoam model with a cosmological constant.

The regularization of the half line boundary and the consequent quantum motion are expounded within the framework of covariant affine quantization, although alternative approaches are also feasible. The former approach is rooted in affine coherent states and offers a consistent semiclassical representation of quantum motion. However, this method has been known to possess two shortcomings: (a) the dependence of affine coherent states on the choice of a vector, denoted as the "fiducial vector" (which remains unspecified), introduces significant arbitrariness in boundary regularization, and (b) regardless of the choice of fiducial vector, affine coherent states fail to evolve parametrically under the Schrödinger equation, thus limiting the accuracy of the semiclassical description. This limitation, in particular, hampers their suitability for approximating the evolution of compound observables. We demonstrate that a distinct and more refined definition of affine coherent states can simultaneously address both of these issues. In other words, these new affine coherent states exhibit parametric evolution only when the fiducial vector, denoted as |ψ0⟩ , possesses a highly specific character, such as being an eigenstate of a well-defined Hamiltonian. Abstract:Quantum coherence plays an important role in quantum resource theory, which is strongly related with entanglement. In order to quantify the full coherence of qudit states, we define G-coherence and convex roof of G-coherence, and prove that the G-coherence is a strong coherence monotone and the convex roof of G-coherence is a coherence measure under fully and strictly incoherent operation (FSIO), respectively. Similar to the entanglement factorization law, we prove a coherence factorization law for arbitrary d-dimensional quantum pure and mixed states under FSIO channels, which generalizes the entanglement factorization law for bipartite pure states. Our results will play an important role in the simplification of dynamical coherence measure.

Abstract:We approach the problem of finding generalized states for matter fields in a de Sitter universe, moving from a group theoretical point of view. This has profound consequences for cosmological perturbations during inflation, and for other CMB observables. In a systematic derivation, we find all the allowed generalities that such a state may have, within the requirements of coherent states. Furthermore, we show their relation to the more familiar excited initial states, often used in inflation.

Abstract:We present a formulation of coherent states as of consistent quantum description of classical configurations in the BRST-invariant quantization of electrodynamics. The quantization with proper gauge-fixing is performed on the vacuum of the theory, whereas other backgrounds are obtained as BRST-invariant coherent states. One of the key insights is the possibility of constructing the coherent states of pure-gauge configurations. This provides a coherent state understanding of topologically non-trivial configurations in gauge theories, and makes number of features, such as the suppression of transitions between topologically-distinct sectors, very transparent at full quantum level. As an example, we construct the Nielsen-Olesen string as a BRST-invariant coherent state. The Abelian pure-gauge configurations can also be viewed as useful analogs for a set of space-times related by coordinate reparameterizations in General Relativity.
