Abstract:The authors propose a complete software and hardware framework for a novel spherical robot to cope with exploration in harsh and unknown environments. The proposed robot is driven by a heavy pendulum covered by a fully enclosed spherical shell, which is strongly protected, amphibious, anti‐overturn and has a long‐battery‐life. Algorithms for location and perception, planning and motion control are comprehensively designed. On the one hand, the authors fully consider the kinematic model of a spherical robot, propose a positioning algorithm that fuses data from inertial measurement units, motor encoder and Global Navigation Satellite System, improve global path planning algorithm based on Hybrid A* and design an instruction planning controller based on model predictive control (MPC). On the other hand, the dynamic model is built, linear MPC and robust servo linear quadratic regulator algorithm is improved, and a speed controller and a direction controller are designed. In addition, based on the pose and motion characteristics of a spherical robot, a visual obstacle perception algorithm and an electronic image stabilisation algorithm are designed. Finally, the authors build physical systems to verify the effectiveness of the above algorithms through experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, a fuzzy PID controller based on yaw angle prediction is applied to design an attitude controller for a spherical rolling robot. The robot consists of a 2-DOF pendulum located inside a spherical shell with freedom to rotate about the transversal and longitudinal axis. The proposed controller allows the robot to autonomously change its parameters to adapt to different environments based on current state. The past researches on the motion of spherical robots mostly focused on simulation or ideal experimental environment. But in this paper, a physical system is built and experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and adaptability of the controller.

Abstract:In this paper, the momentum wheel and heavy pendulum are used as dual control elements, and the coope-rative control system based on the conservation of Angular momentum is studied to drive the spherical robot. The algorithm complexity of the robot is reduced through model decoupling. A nonlinear controller based on the Inter-connection and Damping Assignment Passivity Based Control (IDA-PBC) method was designed to stabilize the robot's roll angle for the momentum wheel, and a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller with feedforward control and output angle was designed for the heavy pendulum. The experiment proves the feasibility of the cooperative control system, The experiment also proves that the maximum stable running speed of the spherical robot is increased by the cooperative control system to more than four times of the original speed and retains a certain turning ability, and retains a certain turning ability, and has a certain robustness when running at high speed.

Abstract:Spherical robots have garnered increasing interest for their applications in exploration, tunnel inspection, and extraterrestrial missions. Diverse designs have emerged, including barycentric configurations, pendulum-based mechanisms, etc. In addition, a wide spectrum of control strategies has been proposed, ranging from traditional PID approaches to cutting-edge neural networks. Our systematic review aims to comprehensively identify and categorize locomotion systems and control schemes employed by spherical robots, spanning the years 1996 to 2023. A meticulous search across five databases yielded a dataset of 3199 records. As a result of our exhaustive analysis, we identified a collection of novel designs and control strategies. Leveraging the insights garnered, we provide valuable recommendations for optimizing the design and control aspects of spherical robots, supporting both novel design endeavors and the advancement of field deployments. Furthermore, we illuminate key research directions that hold the potential to unlock the full capabilities of spherical robots.

Abstract:The spherical robot is designed on the principle of carrying out the turning and driving motions independently. In this paper, the dynamic models of the spherical robot are developed. It is shown by analysis that ball rotation velocity and pendulum angle approach to stability due to the influence of viscous damp, which is verified by simulition. The hardware and software implementations of the spherical robot control system are introduced. The experiment shows that the spherical robot could fulfill general exploration tasks with the smart steering and fast rolling.

Abstract:A novel spherical rolling robot based on stability of sphere was proposed.The robot is designed symmetrically,with every component placed diametrically opposite on the sphere.It moves ahead by two motors which are attached to the shell and drive the corresponding screw transmission mechanism respectively,and turns by changing the position of the barycenter.The mathematical model of the robot was simplified by separating the inside drive unit as the driving force of the shell,while the spherical rolling robot dynamics was precisely analyzed by using D'Alembert-Lagrange principle and nonholonomic system theory.Its motion capabilities,including moving in straight line or circular arc,slope climbing and over obstacle,were also analyzed respectively.Some factors which affect the motion capability of the robot were given.

Abstract:For the spherical robot, an efficient and precise velocity controller suitable for different terrains is crucial. In this paper, a new Riccati controller with feedforward compensation based on Kalman observer (FKO-Riccati controller) with better control performance and stronger robustness is proposed for velocity control of the spherical robot. An accurate dynamic model of the robot is established. Based on the model, a Riccati controller with velocity tracking performance and a Kalman velocity observer are proposed, and the output is feedforward compensated. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller, a series of experiments were conducted using a spherical robot named Rotunbot. The simulations and experimental results show that no matter what terrain the robot was in, compared with the traditional PID controller, the FKO-Riccati controller had better control performance and stronger robustness, whether it was going straight or turning.

Abstract:There are few studies on the lateral motion of spherical robots. In this article, a new algorithm is proposed to solve the problem of low control accuracy of the lateral motion. A single lateral motion model is established, and the optimal solution of the linear quadratic regulator in infinite time domain is obtained. Aiming at the problems of longitudinal velocity and lateral angle coupling and low control precision, state compensation and velocity feedforward are carried out, and an improved robust servo linear quadratic regulator control algorithm is proposed. Experiments show that the proposed lateral control algorithm has strong adaptability and robustness to changing speeds and lateral angles, and the control effect is stable and reliable.

Abstract:A design principle of the spherical robot, which carries out the turning and driving ahead motion independently,is proposed to deal with the complex calculation and bad real-time problem of present spherical robot in the process of the dynamic analysis and control system design.The quasistatic kinematic equations about two-input and five-output state variables are derived by using the projection method of rotation speed vectors,which can be used to control the robot when the speeds of motors are lower.A new trajectory strategy called point-to-point method based on decoupling motion is developed.Those can be used to approximately realize any desired path.

Abstract:The objective of this article is to propose a novel spherical robot with a built-in four-wheel omnidirectional mobile platform. The employment of a four-wheel structure helps to improve the friction coefficient and thus reduce the slipping motion. In addition, it increases the velocity augmentation factor, and thus compensation methods can be effectively implemented into the system to decrease the slipping motion further. Moreover, the traction force is increased and thus the loading capacity can be improved correspondingly. First, the schematic structure along with the operating principle of the proposed spherical robot is introduced. Then, the kinematic and dynamic models are formulated analytically. The slipping error between the omnidirectional wheels and the inner wall of the sphere is analyzed. The slip observer and the motion controller are designed, and their convergence is proved theoretically. Subsequently, simulation is conducted to validate the proposed slip observer that is in turn implemented into the motion controller. The trajectory tracking of the spherical robot on a straight line and circle is verified. Following that, one research prototype of the spherical robot with a built-in four-wheel omnidirectional mobile platform is developed. Experimental investigation shows that the research prototype embedded with the slip observer can achieve the trajectory tracking performance very well.

Unveiling the Complete Variant of Spherical Robots

Abstract:This study presents a systematic enumeration of spherical ($SO(3)$) type parallel robots' variants using an analytical velocity-level approach. These robots are known for their ability to perform arbitrary rotations around a fixed point, making them suitable for numerous applications. Despite their architectural diversity, existing research has predominantly approached them on a case-by-case basis. This approach hinders the exploration of all possible variants, thereby limiting the benefits derived from architectural diversity. By employing a generalized analytical approach through the reciprocal screw method, we systematically explore all the kinematic conditions for limbs yielding $SO(3)$ motion.Consequently, all 73 possible types of non-redundant limbs suitable for generating the target $SO(3)$ motion are identified. The approach involves performing an in-depth algebraic motion-constraint analysis and identifying common characteristics among different variants. This leads us to systematically explore all 73 symmetric and 5256 asymmetric variants, which in turn become a total of 5329, each potentially having different workspace capability, stiffness performance, and dynamics. Hence, having all these variants can facilitate the innovation of novel spherical robots and help us easily find the best and optimal ones for our specific applications.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem of insufficient stability of the existing spherical robot, a spherical robot driven by eccentric pendulums and self-stabilizing by flywheel is proposed in this paper. The robot is driven by the gravity shift of the pendulum and its stability is improved by flywheels rotating at high speed. This paper designed the structure of the robot and established a three-dimensional model in SolidWorks. After finishing the spherical robot prototype, its motion performance is verified by experiment. According to the experimental results, the maximum climbing angle of the spherical robot driven only by the eccentricity of the gravity pendulum is 7 degrees, and the stability can be significantly improved when the flywheel is enabled. With fast braking of the flywheel, the robot can climb over the obstacles to the instantaneous climbing angle of 28 degrees and move steadily in rugged terrain.

Abstract:Spherical robots have many desirable traits when designing mass efficient systems interacted with unstructured terrain. In this letter, we propose a hybrid bionic spherical robot based on the morphological properties of sea urchins and the movement characteristics of tumbleweeds. This robot enables it to move freely in harsh terrain with the distributed high-aspect-ratio telescopic units, where our control strategy is based on a central pattern generator, and combines foot pressure measurements and actuator state information. In particular, these data from multiple foot pressure sensors also are used to compute the robots center of mass, with evaluating locomotion state during rolling maneuvers. The experimental results show the ability of our design to provide reliable pose estimates, also overcoming a challenge in the field of mobile robotics, including switch directions flexibly in harsh terrain due to their anisotropy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design of a spherical robot with a high spherical shell to drive-unit mass ratio. A drive unit and a novel shell structure design for the spherical robot are proposed, and reaction wheels are used to reduce the robot’s oscillations. Dynamic models of the spherical robot are established for linear motion and static state by using Lagrange equation. The stability of the robot is studied via simulations in different, such as accelerated state, uniform state, and so on. The results demonstrate the ability of the reaction wheel structure to enhance the robot’s stability.

Abstract:This paper proposes a multi-pose spherical robot designed to meet obstacle avoidance requirements within complex mobile environments. The motion state of the spherical robot is analyzed comprehensively in ROS and Gazebo environments. The robot can climb, roll, and fly by combining four-legged crawling, wheel-rolling, and four-rotor-flying movement methods. The robot can flexibly switch between movement modes through a corresponding deformation mechanism and spherical split design in both ROS and Gazebo environments.

Abstract:The spherical robot's hermetically sealed spherical housing renders it flexible and capable of functioning continuously in harsh weather conditions and challenging environments. In order to address the issue of insufficient climbing ability of spherical robots, a single eccentric mass-driven spherical robot was designed. The climbing process of a spherical robot was subjected to analysis, with particular attention paid to the mass distribution of the robot's spherical shell and internal structure. A kinematics model and a dynamics model were developed to decompose the robot's motion into linear and steering motions. The mass size and swing amplitude of the eccentric mass are the key factors affecting the motion performance and stability of the spherical robot, and the swinging process of the heavy pendulum with different eccentric masses is analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the robot has a minimum turning radius of 0.5 m and is capable of climbing slopes with a gradient of 12°. The maximum error in the speed control of the spherical robot is 0.3314 rad/s.

Abstract:Conventional spherical robots have the problems complex mechanical structure,lack of a stable platform and other obvious problems.To overcome these shortcomings,a simplified mechanical structure of spherical robot was designed,and a stable platform for expansion of on-board device was built.A dynamic model was built on the design scheme of the spherical robot based on Lagrange-Routh equations,and Matlab / Simulink was used to simulate and analyze the existing mathematical model of the spherical robot.By combining the system hardware assembly,the robot was initially tested on walking straight,climbing and other activities,respectively.Experiments show that the new simplified mechanical structure of the spherical robot is able to follow established walking instructions.This research lays a foundation for further application and promotion.

Abstract:Using Lagrange equation and other mechanics methods,this paper analyzes the motion characteristics of rolling and turning of a micro-spherical robot,and achieves the conditions of jumping.A general dynamics model is built based on the analysis of characteristics of precession,which can make the robot roll along any curve.A virtual prototype of the spherical robot is developed,and the motion simulation is conducted.The result verifies the correctness of above analysis.The work in this paper establishes the foundation for further research on nonlinear control of spherical robot.

Abstract:In order to reinforce the operation stability and obstacle capability of a spherical robot, this paper presents a spherical robot with high-speed rotating flywheel, the mechanical structure of which is mainly composed of a spherical shell, a double pendulum on both sides and two high-speed flywheels. The robot has three excitation modes: level running, self-stability operating, and obstacle surmounting. The dynamic characteristics of the pendulum, flywheel, and brake of the robot are discussed through the establishment of kinematic and dynamic model of the spherical robot and the influence of parameters like weight, flywheel speed. and flywheel position on its dynamic characteristics and robot performance is optimized and analyzed in detail. The research results indicate that the two flywheels located in the center of the sphere apart can bring maximum stability gain to the sphere. Finally, the simulation and experiment of the stability gain brought by the high-speed flywheel to the sphere verify that the operation stability of the sphere is effectively improved after using the flywheel, and the robot that stops the flywheel through a brake fixed on the pendulum has better obstacle surmounting performance.
