Abstract:Objective To research the relations between the incidence of sudden deafness and the season, lunar phase and solar activities. Methods The onset date in 332 cases of sudden deafness treated between 2000 and 2006 was retrospectively analyzed. The proportional rate of sudden deafness among hospitalized patients in the authors' department in the past 30 years was also reviewed. Results Of the 332 cases treated between 200 and 2006,66 occurred in spring,94 in summer,86 in autumn and 87 in winter. The highest incidence of sudden deafness was in August and September, and the lowest in May and October.More cases started on the first and 15th days on the lunar calendar than on the 28th and 29th days. The onset of 185 cases was between the first and 15th days on lunar-calendar(new moon to full moon),and 147 cases between the 16th and 30th days(full moon to dark moon). In the past 30 years, sunspot eruption was most active in 1989 and 2000,and least active in 1996.The proportional rate of sudden deafness among hospitalized patients in the authors' department was 1.99% in 1989,4.3% in 1996 and 5.01%.in 2000,not different from the averaged rate of sudden deafness among hospitalized patients of the corresponding decade(P > 0.05),which was 1.69% in the 1980s,3.31% in the 1990s and 4.38% between 2000 and 2009,showing a consistent increase over time(P < 0.01).The local annual mean surface air temperature increased rapidly from 1980 to 2009.Conclusions The highest incidence of sudden deafness seems to be in summer, especially in August and September. The moon phase also appears to affect incidence of sudden deafness.Sunspot outbreaks do not appear to be correlated to the incidence of sudden deafness. The increase of sudden deafness cases in the past 30 years in the authors' department parallels the increase of local surface air temperature caused by increasing CO2 emission and greenhouse effect.
