Abstract:A new lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is introduced, based on a regularization of the pre-collision distribution functions in terms of the local density, velocity, and momentum flux tensor. The model dramatically improves the precision and numerical stability for the simulation of fluid flows by LB methods. This claim is supported by simulation results of some 2D and 3D flows.

Abstract:A numerical method, based on a discrete Boltzmann equation, is presented for solving the equations of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). The algorithm provides advantages similar to the cellular automaton method in that it is local and easily adapted to parallel computing environments. Because of much lower noise levels and less stringent requirements on lattice size, the method appears to be more competitive with traditional solution methods. Examples show that the model accurately reproduces both linear and nonlinear MHD phenomena.

Abstract:A unified method is proposed to treat 3D moving boundaries at arbitrary velocity as an extension of kinetic format and bounce-back format.Velocities at inlet and on solid wall are special cases of the model.A simplified expression is given in a three dimensional 15velocity model.Numerical simulation for a diagonally lid-driven three-dimensional cavity flow is performed to verify this scheme.Compared with finite difference method(FDM),the proposed method proves reasonable.

Abstract:Lattice Boltzmann schemes rely on the enlargement of the size of the target problem in order to solve PDEs in a highly parallelizable and efficient kinetic-like fashion, split into a collision and a stream phase. This structure, despite the well-known advantages from a computational standpoint, is not suitable to construct a rigorous notion of consistency with respect to the target equations and to provide a precise notion of stability. In order to alleviate these shortages and introduce a rigorous framework, we demonstrate that any lattice Boltzmann scheme can be rewritten as a corresponding multi-step Finite Difference scheme on the conserved variables. This is achieved by devising a suitable formalism based on operators, commutative algebra and polynomials. Therefore, the notion of consistency of the corresponding Finite Difference scheme allows to invoke the Lax-Richtmyer theorem in the case of linear lattice Boltzmann schemes. Moreover, we show that the frequently-used von Neumann-like stability analysis for lattice Boltzmann schemes entirely corresponds to the von Neumann stability analysis of their Finite Difference counterpart. More generally, the usual tools for the analysis of Finite Difference schemes are now readily available to study lattice Boltzmann schemes. Their relevance is verified by means of numerical illustrations.

Abstract:In contrast to the commonly used lattice Boltzmann method, off-lattice Boltzmann methods decouple the velocity discretization from the underlying spatial grid, thus allowing for more efficient geometric representations of complex boundaries. The current work combines characteristic-based integration of the streaming step with the free-energy based multiphase model by Lee et. al. [Journal of Computational Physics, 206 (1), 2005 ]. This allows for simulation time steps more than an order of magnitude larger than the relaxation time. Unlike previous work by Wardle et. al. [Computers and Mathematics with Applications, 65 (2), 2013 ] that integrated intermolecular forcing terms in the advection term, the current scheme applies collision and forcing terms locally for a simpler finite element formulation. A series of thorough benchmark studies reveal that this does not compromise stability and that the scheme is able to accurately simulate flows at large density and viscosity contrasts.

Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann method on nonuniform quadtree grids is proposed. Our method employs the interpolation-supplemented lattice Boltzmann model. The advantages of the quadtree grid are preserved by using linear interpolation instead of quadratic interpolation to complete the streaming step in the lattice Boltzmann method. The back-and-forth error compensation and correction (BFECC) method is used to improve the accuracy, so that the second-order accuracy of the conventional lattice Boltzmann method is maintained. Several numerical cases, including a BFECC streaming test, lid-driven cavity flow, and flow over an asymmetrically placed cylinder in a channel, are carried out to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of our method.

Abstract:A hybrid method that combines an advanced lattice Boltzmann model with traditional finite difference techniques is developed. An operator splitting technique is applied to separate the numerical scheme into two subproblems. Each subproblem is solved with different techniques, namely lattice Boltzmann and finite differences. This method is applied for the first time to a two-phase flow simulation case. Major simplifications are obtained in the lattice Boltzmann implementation. Simulations are presented to show these improvements and to validate the technique with kinematic viscosity down to 10−4 in lattice Boltzmann units. This technique does not add instabilities, and in contrast improves the stability behavior compared to reducing the relaxation time.

Abstract:The lattice evolution method for solving the nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann equation in confined domain is developed by introducing the second-order accurate Dirichlet and Neumann boundary implements, which are consistent with the non-slip model in lattice Boltzmann method for fluid flows. The lattice evolution method is validated by comparing with various analytical solutions and shows superior to the classical numerical solvers of the nonlinear Poisson equations with Neumann boundary conditions. The accuracy and stability of the method are discussed. This lattice evolution nonlinear Poisson–Boltzmann solver is suitable for efficient parallel computing, complex geometry conditions, and easy extension to three-dimensional cases.

Abstract:A new implementation of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for fluid–structure interactions is presented. The idea of the distributed-Lagrange-multiplier/fictitious-domain method (DLM/FD) is introduced in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann algorithm. This implementation employs a fixed mesh for the solution of the fluid problem and a Lagrangian formulation for the solid problem. The main advantage of the method is that the re-meshing procedure normally required in the ALE method is circumvented. Numerical examples are provided to verify the algorithm and illustrate the capacity of the method to deal with the fluid/elastic–solid interactions.

Abstract:Lattice Boltzmann (LB) Methods are a somewhat novel approach to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. These methods simulate Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations on the mesoscopic (quasi-kinetic) scale by solving for a statistical distribution of particles rather than attempting to solve the nonlinear macroscopic equations directly. These LB methods allow for a highly parallelizable code since one replaces the difficult nonlinear convective derivatives of MHD by simple linear advection on a lattice. New developments in LB have significantly extended the numerical stability limits of its applicability. These developments include multiple relaxation times (MRT) in the collision operators, maximizing entropy to ensure positive definiteness in the distribution functions, as well as large eddy simulations of MHD turbulence. Improving the limits of this highly parallelizable simulation method allows it to become an ideal candidate for simulating various fluid and plasma problems; improving both the speed of the simulation and the spatial grid resolution of the LB algorithms on today’s high performance supercomputers. Some of these LB extensions are discussed and tested against various problems in magnetized plasmas.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a vectorial finite-difference-based lattice Boltzmann method (FD-LBM), which unifies several different numerical schemes for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. By using the Maxwell iteration, we analyze the consistency under the diffusive scaling. In the situation that the widely used bounce-back or “anti-bounce-back” boundary schemes are not applicable, a new boundary scheme is developed to accompany the vectorial method. It is shown that the scheme has second-order accuracy when the boundary is located at the middle of two neighboring lattice nodes. We also prove the numerical stability of the vectorial method on periodic domains and the vectorial method together with the boundary scheme on bounded domains. Several numerical experiments for 2D & 3D flow problems with straight and curved boundaries validate the stability and accuracy of the vectorial LBM with the proposed boundary scheme.
A consistent and conservative diffuse-domain lattice Boltzmann method for multiphase flows in complex geometries

Abstract:Modeling and simulation of multiphase flows in complex geomerties are challenging due to the complexity in describing the interface topology changes among different phases and the difficulty in implementing the boundary conditions on the irregular solid surface. In this work, we first developed a diffuse-domain (DD) based phase-field model for multiphase flows in complex geometries. In this model, the irregular fluid region is embedded into a larger and regular domain by introducing a smooth characteristic function. Then, the reduction-consistent and conservative phase-field equation for the multiphase field and the consistent and conservative Navier-Stokes equations for the flow field are reformulated as the diffuse-domain based consistent and conservative (DD-CC) equations where some additional source terms are added to reflect the effects of boundary conditions. In this case, there is no need to directly treat the complex boundary conditions on the irregular solid surface, and additionally, based on a matched asymptotic analysis, it is also shown that the DD-CC equations can converge to the original governing equations as the interface width parameter tends to zero. Furthermore, to solve the DD-CC equations, we proposed a novel and simple lattice Boltzmann (LB) method with a Hermite-moment-based collision matrix which can not only keep consistent and conservation properties, but also improve the numerical stability with a flexible parameter. With the help of the direct Taylor expansion, the macroscopic DD-CC equations can be recovered correctly from the present LB method. Finally, to test the capacity of LB method, several benchmarks and complex problems are considered, and the numerical results show that the present LB method is accurate and efficient for the multiphase flows in complex geomerties.

Abstract:The motivation of this study is twofold. First, a recursive mathematical formulation of the discrete-velocity Boltzmann equation (DVBE) under the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) approximation is introduced. This formulation allows us to formally express the solution of the DVBE as an infinite sum over successive particle derivatives of the distributions associated with local equilibrium. A Chapman-Enskog multiple-scales expansion shows that this sum can be safely truncated beyond the second order if the Navier-Stokes level of description is requested. Therefore, the distribution functions depend only on the first and second-order derivatives of the related equilibrium distributions. This alternative equation to the DVBE defines a basis to design kinetic schemes for the evolution of the distribution functions based solely on flow variables that are sufficient to define local equilibrium. Second, a family of mass-conserving numerical schemes is introduced from this kinetic equation by discretizing the particle derivatives by backward finite differences. Interestingly, a so-called "simplified Lattice Boltzmann method" introduced by Chen et al. in 2017 can be recast in this family. Numerical simulations highlight a level of numerical dissipation that is generally higher than the level obtained with a standard Lattice Boltzmann scheme, as expected by approximating derivatives by finite differences. Nevertheless, we show by using a von Neumann analysis that it is possible to parametrize our scheme, according to the relaxation coefficient of the DVBE, to reduce significantly its numerical dissipation and improve its spectral properties.We believe that this modeling can also be of interest to connect macroscopic and kinetic representations, e.g. when dealing with initial and boundary conditions or in hybrid simulations matching Navier-Stokes and Lattice Boltzmann schemes.

Abstract:Lattice Boltzmann methods are a popular mesoscopic alternative to macroscopic computational fluid dynamics solvers. Many variants have been developed that vary in complexity, accuracy, and computational cost. Extensions are available to simulate multi-phase, multi-component, turbulent, or non-Newtonian flows. In this work we present lbmpy, a code generation package that supports a wide variety of different methods and provides a generic development environment for new schemes as well. A high-level domain-specific language allows the user to formulate, extend and test various lattice Boltzmann schemes. The method specification is represented in a symbolic intermediate representation. Transformations that operate on this intermediate representation optimize and parallelize the method, yielding highly efficient lattice Boltzmann compute kernels not only for single- and two-relaxation-time schemes but also for multi-relaxation-time, cumulant, and entropically stabilized methods. An integration into the HPC framework waLBerla makes massively parallel, distributed simulations possible, which is demonstrated through scaling experiments on the SuperMUC-NG supercomputing system

Abstract:An additional potential energy distribution function is introduced on the basis of previous D3Q25 model, and the equilibrium distribution function of D3Q25 is obtained by spherical function. A novel three-dimensional (3D) shifted lattice model is proposed, therefore a shifted lattice model is introduced into D3Q25. Under the finite volume scheme, several typical compressible calculation examples are used to verify whether the numerical stability of the D3Q25 model can be improved by adding the shifted lattice model. The simulation results show that the numerical stability is indeed improved after adding the shifted lattice model.

Abstract:This paper proposes a density-based topology optimization method for natural convection problems using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). As the LBM can be developed as a completely explicit scheme, its attractive features over the traditional ones, such as the finite element method, are (1) suitability for solving unsteady flow problems and (2) scalability for large-scale parallel computing. We develop an LBM code for solving unsteady natural convection problems and provide its sensitivity analysis based on the so-called adjoint lattice Boltzmann method. Notably, the adjoint equation is derived from the discrete particle velocity Boltzmann equation and can be solved similarly to the original LBM concerning unsteady natural convection problems. We first show that the proposed method can produce similar results to the previous work in a steady-state natural convection problem. We then demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method through 2D numerical examples concerning unsteady natural convection. As a large-scale problem, we tackle a 3D unsteady natural convection problem on a parallel supercomputer. Parallelised Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm for lattice-Boltzmann simulations

Abstract:We discuss two topics that we have encountered in our lattice-Boltzmann simulations of complex fluids: the sizes of droplets in particle-stabilised emulsions and deformable particles in fluid flow. The common factor in these seemingly disparate subjects is that both represent an opportunity for a novel application of the Hoshen-Kopelman algorithm. This algorithm is based on detecting connected clusters on a lattice and labelling the involved lattice sites such that all sites that are connected share the same label. The assumption of the presence of a lattice makes it a convenient algorithm to use in combination with lattice-Boltzmann simulations. In order to apply this algorithm on the fly during massively parallel simulations, it needs to be parallelised as well. We present our parallel implementation, which is tailored to a common parallelisation scheme for the lattice-Boltzmann method, and compare it to previous work. We then briefly discuss some examples of results obtained using this procedure.

Abstract:The lattice Boltzmann method, after close to thirty years of presence in computational fluid dynamics has turned into a versatile, efficient and quite popular numerical tool for fluid flow simulations. The lattice Boltzmann method owes its popularity in the past decade to its efficiency, low numerical dissipation and simplicity of its algorithm. Progress in recent years has opened the door for yet another very challenging area of application: Combustion simulations. Combustion is known to be a challenge for numerical tools due to, among many others, the large number of variables and scales both in time and space, leading to a stiff multi-scale problem. In the present work we present a comprehensive overview of models and strategies developed in the past years to model combustion with the lattice Boltzmann method and discuss some of the most recent applications, remaining challenges and prospects.

High-order thread-safe lattice Boltzmann model for HPC turbulent flow simulations

Abstract:We present a highly-optimized thread-safe lattice Boltzmann model in which the non-equilibrium part of the distribution function is locally reconstructed via recursivity of Hermite polynomials. Such a procedure allows the explicit incorporation of non-equilibrium moments of the distribution up to the order supported by the lattice. Thus, the proposed approach increases accuracy and stability at low viscosities without compromising performances and amenability to parallelization with respect to standard lattice Boltzmann models. The high-order thread-safe LB is tested on two types of turbulent flows, namely the turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=180$ and the axisymmetric turbulent jet at $Re = 7000$, it delivers results in excellent agreement with reference data (both DNS, theory, and experiments) and a) achieves peak performances ($\sim 5 \; TeraFlop/s$ and an arithmetic intensity of $\sim 7\; FLOP/byte$ on single GPU) by significantly reducing the memory footprint, b) retains the algorithmic simplicity of standard lattice Boltzmann computing and c) allows to perform stable simulations at vanishingly low viscosities. Our findings open attractive prospects for high-performance simulations of realistic turbulent flows on GPU-based architectures. Such expectations are confirmed by the excellent agreement among lattice Boltzmann, experimental, and DNS reference data.

Abstract:Lattice gas and lattice Boltzmann methods are recently developed numerical schemes for simulating a variety of physical systems. In this paper a new lattice Boltzmannmodel for modeling two‐dimensional (2‐D) incompressible magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) is presented. The current model fully utilizes the flexibility of the lattice Boltzmann method in comparison with previous lattice gas and lattice BoltzmannMHDmodels, reducing the number of moving directions from 36 in other models to 12 only. To increase computational efficiency, a simple single time relaxation rule is used for collisions, which directly controls the transport coefficients. The bidirectional streaming process of the particle distribution function in this paper is similar to the original model [H. Chen and W. H. Matthaeus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 1845 (1987), S. Chen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 3776 (1991)], but has been greatly simplified, affording simpler implementation of boundary conditions and increasing the feasibility of extension into a workable three‐dimensional (3‐D) model. Analytical expressions for the transport coefficients are presented. Also, as example cases, numerical calculation for the Hartmann flow is performed, showing a good agreement between the theoretical prediction and numerical simulation, and a sheet‐pinch simulation is performed and compared with the results obtained with a spectral method.
