Abstract:The system of a two-level atom interacting with a quantized radiation field in a gravitational field is studied by making use of a dynamical algebraic method. A full quantum treatment of the internal and external dynamics of the atom is given and an exact expression for the time evolution operator of the system is obtained. The influence of the gravitational field on the collapses and revivals of the atomic population, sub-Poissonian statistics, radiation force, atomic momentum diffusion, and squeezing of the radiation field is also investigated.

Abstract:The medical application of ionizing radiation has the longest history,the most extensive uses and the strongest effect among the multiple applications of ionizing radiation technology.With the development of diagnostic radiology and radiotherapy,for instances,the radiology,the interventional radiology,the nuclear medicine,and the radiation oncology;the infrastructures and teambuilding of medical physics in China has been becoming more and more important and urgent.Fortunately,people in relevant fields have already recognized this situation and made lots of progresses in the recent years,for example,the 221(st) Xiangshan Science Conference took "The Development of Medical Physics" as its main topic in 2004;in recent years,a series of regulations and national standards regarding to the quality assurance and radiological protection of medical exposure and the teambuilding of the relevant departments in hospital have been successively issued;the subject of Medical Physics was opened as both undergraduate and graduated courses in more and more universities(Tsinghua University,Peking University etc);the Committee on Medical Physics was enrolled as a new member of the Chinese Physical Society.Modern medical physics should include 4 parts,medical imaging physics,nuclear medicine physics,radiation oncology physics,and health physics.Protection against ionizing radiation needs to fully cover the development of medical physics,which includes the protection against ianizing radiation in medical uses.This article emphasizes the improvement of the ionizing radiation protection in medical uses,for marking of 30(th) anniversary of the Journal of Radiation Protection.

Abstract:In order to protect human health from the hazards of nuclear radiation, it is necessary to standardize the management of irradiation equipment. According to the principle of “man-machine-management-environment” intrinsic safety, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and cloud model method were adopted. A quantitative safety evaluation index system was established from four aspects: safety management, safety environment, irradiation equipment and experimental team. Based on the actual situation of an experimental institution, the safety grade of this experimental institution was systematically analyzed. The safety grade of this experimental organization was excellent, but it still needs to improve certain aspects. Corresponding management recommendations were put forward for nuclear technology utilization units of different safety levels.

Abstract:On the basis of the introduction to the mechanism of ionizing radiation,the paper described its application to waste water treatment.Factors influencing radiation-induced degradation,including water quality(initial concentration,pH,solvent and free-radical scavenger) and radiation source(type and dose rate) ware reviewed.Kinetic model of pollutant removal was established,which simulated the influence of the water quality and radiation sources on pollutant decomposition.The problems and the future development direction of ionizing radiation were anticipated.
Progress on Characterizing and Evaluating Radiation Doses to Examinees from X-ray Diagnosis

Abstract:Objective: For accurate evaluation of radiation doses on examinees from medical X-ray diagnosis,methods for measuring or estimating the radiation exposure to examinees imparted by various types of diagnosis radiology were systematically discussed. Methods: By categorizing the X-ray diagnosis into the conventional radiography,digital radiography,mammography and computed tomography,the charactering radiation quantities corresponding to different categories were reviewed,and the methods of direct measurements or model estimations for various diagnostic X-ray imaging modalities were compared and evaluated. Results: Direct measurements of the charactering radiation quantities are possible for most categories of the X-ray diagnosis at present,however,the measurements can only be precisely performed under some certain conditions,and the work is time-consuming and costly. On the other hand,mathematical models are relatively convenient not only for estimating the characterizing radiation quantities,bust also for evaluating the effective doses directly related to the radiation risks. The latter one is considered to be more suitable for performing large-scale surveys,and for evaluating the collective dose as well as its related radiation risk. Conclusions: Accurate evaluation of the radiation dose to examinees in X-ray diagnosis is an important topic in the field of medical physics,studies on building rational mathematical models for evaluating the radiation doses are practical and indispensable.

Abstract:Background Heavy ion radiotherapy (HIRT) has great advantages as tumor radiotherapy. Methods Based on 1,558 literatures from core collections of Web of Science from 1980 to 2020, this study visually analyzes the evolution of HIRT research, and sorts out the hotspots and trends of HIRT research using CiteSpace software. Results Research on HIRT has received more extensive attention over the last 40 years. The development of HIRT is not only closely related to radiation and oncology, but also closely related to the development of human society. In terms of citation frequency, “International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics” was the top journal. In terms of influence, “Radiotherapy and Oncology” was the top journal. “Radiation therapy” and “carbon ion radiotherapy” were the two most frequently used keywords in this field. Conclusion The evolution of the HIRT research has occurred in approximately three stages, including technological exploration, safety and effectiveness research and technological breakthroughs. Finally, some suggestions for future research are put forward.

Abstract:The multiscale approach to the assessment of biodamage resulting upon irradiation of biological media with ions is reviewed, explained and compared to other approaches. The processes of ion propagation in the medium concurrent with ionization and excitation of molecules, transport of secondary products, dynamics of the medium, and biological damage take place on a number of different temporal, spatial and energy scales. The multiscale approach, a physical phenomenon-based analysis of the scenario that leads to radiation damage, has been designed to consider all relevant effects on a variety of scales and develop an approach to the quantitative assessment of biological damage as a result of irradiation with ions. This paper explains the scenario of radiation damage with ions, overviews its major parts, and applies the multiscale approach to different experimental conditions. On the basis of this experience, the recipe for application of the multiscale approach is formulated. The recipe leads to the calculation of relative biological effectiveness.

Abstract:Abstract This review presents basic information on the dosimetric quantities used in medical imaging for reporting patient doses and establishing diagnostic reference levels. The proper use of the radiation protection quantity “effective dose” to compare doses delivered by different radiological procedures and different imaging modalities with its uncertainties and limitations, is summarised. The estimates of population doses required by the European Directive on Basic Safety Standards is commented on. Referrers and radiologists should be familiar with the dose quantities to inform patients about radiation risks and benefits. The application of effective dose on the cumulative doses from recurrent imaging procedures is also discussed. Patient summary : Basic information on the measurement units (dosimetric quantities) used in medical imaging for reporting radiation doses should be understandable to patients. The Working Group on “Dosimetry for imaging in clinical practice” recommended that a brief explanation on the used dosimetric quantities and units included in the examination imaging report, should be available for patients. The use of the quantity “effective dose” to compare doses to which patients are exposed to from different radiological procedures and its uncertainties and limitations, should also be explained in plain language. This is also relevant for the dialog on to the cumulative doses from recurrent imaging procedures. The paper summarises these concepts, including the need to estimate the population doses required by the European Directive on Basic Safety Standards. Referrers and radiologists should be familiar with the dose quantities to inform patients about radiation risks and benefits.

Abstract:The key conceptions and theories of UV application were discussed in this paper.The conceptions of "fluence rate" and "irradiance" were firstly brought into Chinese literatures,and the corresponding translations in Chinese was suggested as well.The measurement and calculation of ultraviolet was then illustrated,"local volumetric rate of energy absorption,LVREA" and "dimension coefficient" were put forward for more scientific calculation and expression.The differences between "fluence rate" and "irradiance",as well as their applications in projects were introduced finally.

Abstract:During a radiological or nuclear emergency, occupational workers, members of the public, and emergency responders may be exposed to radionuclides, whether external or internal, through inhalation, ingestion, or wounds. In the case of internalized radiation exposure, prompt assessment of contamination is necessary to inform subsequent medical interventions. This review assembles the constituent considerations for managing nuclear and radiological incidents, focused on a parallel analysis of the evolution of radiation dose limits – notably in the emergency preparedness and response realm – alongside a discussion of triage systems and in vivo radionuclide detection tools. The review maps the development of international and national standards and regulations concerning radiation dose limits, illuminating how past incidents and accumulated knowledge have informed present emergency preparedness and response practices, specifically for internalized radiation. Additionally, the objectives and levels of radiation triage systems are explored in-depth, along with a global survey of practices and protocols. Finally, this review also focuses on in vivo detection systems and their capacities for radionuclide identification, prioritizing internalized gamma-emitting isotopes due to their broader relevance. Collectively, this study comprehensively addresses the intricacies of triage management following radiation emergencies, emphasizing the imperative for enhanced standardization and continued research in this critical domain.

The facilities where these sources are operated exploit the isotope separation online (ISOL) technique, in which a target is combined with an ion source to maximize the secondary beam intensity and chemical element selectivity. Three main classes of sources are operated, namely surface-type ion sources, arc discharge-type ion sources, and finally radio-frequency-heated plasma-type ion sources.

Abstract:Disinfection and sterilization technologies are of great significance in the food industry, medical field and water treatment, et al. Compared with traditional chemical and thermal methods, physical disinfection and sterilization approaches such as γ-rays, X-rays, electron beams, microwaves, low-temperature plasmas, ultraviolet rays and high-voltage pulsed electric fields have the advantages of no environmental pollution, low sterilization temperatures, no chemical residues, and so on. These physical disinfection and sterilization approaches are getting increasing concerns because of unique advantages. In this paper, the mechanisms of present physical disinfection and sterilization technics were summarized. The advantages and disadvantages of these physical means as well as their application areas are reviewed. Based on the superiorities and drawbacks of each method, different approaches should be adopted for the disinfection and sterilization of specific objects. Moreover, this paper highlights the trends on development of physical disinfection and sterilization approaches and proposes the extensive demands of the physical approaches on various aspects of our life.

Abstract:This research is devoted to the calculation and theoretical analysis of physical processes in the powerful electric discharge sources of UV radiation and shock waves with required and controlled technical and physical characteristics. Based on the calculations, the processes of converting the initially stored electromagnetic energy into internal, kinetic, magnetic and radiation energy formed in the electro-discharge plasma sources of plasma formation were studied, and the interactions of discharged plasma and its radiation with matter in different aggregate states were also studied. All the main magneto-plasma dynamic and radiative parameters of plasma formation in the electric discharge sources of UV radiation and shock waves are obtained.

Abstract:Under the background of rapid development in nuclear power,strengthen the knowledge of 135Cs analysis and application is extremely necessary.Therefore,based on published literatures and materials,the source term and instrumental analysis of 135Cs were summarized and addressed.Different chemical separation methods and mass spectrometry techniques (ICP-MS,TIMS,RIMS and AMS) for radiocesium determination were compared in this review.In addition,the obtained limit of detection and chemical yield in reported papers were also compared.Finally,we discussed the potential application of 135Cs/137Cs isotopic ratio in the environment with emphasis on Fukushima nuclear accident and prospects in accurate determination,migration behavior and application of 135Cs/137CS isotopic ratio for future research.
