Abstract:Atomic nuclei are composite systems, and they may be dynamically excited during nuclear reactions. Such excitations are not only relevant to inelastic scattering but they also affect other reaction processes such as elastic scattering and fusion. The coupled-channels approach is a framework which can describe these reaction processes in a unified manner. It expands the total wave function of the system in terms of the ground and excited states of the colliding nuclei, and solves the coupled Shrödinger equations to obtain the $S$-matrix, from which several cross sections can be constructed. This approach has been a standard tool to analyze experimental data for nuclear reactions. In this paper, we review the present status and the recent developments of the coupled-channels approach. This includes the microscopic coupled-channels method and its application to cluster physics, the continuum discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method for breakup reactions, the semi-microscopic approach to heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions, the channel coupling effects on nuclear astrophysics and syntheses of superheavy elements, and inclusive breakup and incomplete fusion reactions of weakly-bound nuclei.

Pion-Nucleon Scattering and the Pi-Nn Coupling-Constant in the Chiral Color-Dielectric Model

Abstract:We apply the chiral color dielectric model to low- and medium-energy scattering within the coupled πN and πΔ system. Dynamic baryon states in which quarks are confined by the scalar color-dielectric field are constructed in Fock space. Spurious motion of the center of mass is eliminated by constructing momentum eigenstates via a Peierls-Yoccoz projection. The relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation is solved for the complex energies of the T matrix poles, and the pole positions of the nucleon and delta are used to fix the few parameters of the model. The S- and P-wave phase shifts, the bare N and Δ masses, the renormalized πNN and πNΔ coupling constants, and the πNN and πNΔ vertex functions are predicted. nucleon and delta are used to fix the few parameters of the model. Coupled-channel analysis of the near-threshold $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}$ cross sections

Abstract:The possible existence of nucleon-antinucleon bound states has been studied for decades. We investigate the $e^+e^-\to p\bar{p}$ and $e^+e^-\to n\bar{n}$ cross sections in the nonrelativistic effective field theory framework. The proton-antiproton and neutron-antineutron coupled-channel final state interactions are considered and found responsible for near-threshold enhancements. Both the proton-neutron mass difference and the Coulomb interaction between $p$ and $\bar{p}$ are considered, and the $N\bar{N}$ strong interactions are taken into account through a short-distance optical potential. By fitting the low energy constants in the amplitudes to the data for the near-threshold $e^+e^-\to N\bar{N}$ cross sections from the BESIII and SND Collaborations, a $N\bar{N}$ quasi-bound state is found just above the $p\bar{p}$ threshold, and another $N\bar{N}$ pole is found on the unphysical Riemann sheet, farther away from the threshold. The constructed coupled-channel amplitude with Coulomb effects also offers a framework that can be used directly in experimental analyses on fine structures near the $N\bar{N}$ thresholds.

Adding Corrections to Global Spherical Potentials for Use in a Coupled-Channel Formulation

Abstract:The coupled-channel technique augments a non-relativistic distorted wave born approximation scattering calculation to include a coupling to virtual states from the negative energy region. It has been found to be important in low energy nucleon-nucleus scattering. We modify the nucleon-nucleus standard optical potentials, not designed for a coupled-channel space, so they can be used in that setting. The changes are small and systematic. We use a standard scattering code to adjust a variety of optical potentials and targets such that the original fit to scattering observables are maintained as we incorporate the coupled-channel environment. Overall over forty target nuclei were tested from $A=12$ to $A=205$ and nucleon projectile energies from 1 MeV to 200 MeV. There is excellent improvement in fitting the scattering observables, especially for low energy neutron scattering.The corrections were found to be unimportant for projectile energies greater than 200 MeV. The largest changes are to the surface amplitudes while the real radii and the real central amplitude are modified by only a few percent, every other parameter is unchanged. This technique is general enough to be applied to a variety of inelastic theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A procedure of combining the medium energy scattering theory in the Eikonal approximation with the interacting boson model is proposed to study the pion-nucleus scattering. The channel coupling effects in the excitation of nuclear collective state with pi- and pi+ elastic and inelastic scattering are analyzed. The calculated cross sections for the excitation of 2(1)+ state of Sn-118 agree with experimental data quite well.

Abstract:Positivity constraints are derived on pion–nucleon scattering amplitudes and their even-order derivatives inside the Mandelstam triangle with the help of dispersion relations. Fairly interesting constraints are obtained on some of the low-energy constants, by a combination of the chiral perturbation theory for heavy baryons and existing fitting results from available pion–nucleon phase shifts at intermediate energies.

Abstract:We consider the nuclear effective field theory including pions in the two-nucleon sector in the S waves up to including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) terms according to the power counting suggested by the Wilsonian renormalization group analysis done in a previous paper. We treat only the leading contact interaction nonperturbatively, and the rest, including the long-distance part of pion exchange, are treated as perturbations. To define the long-distance part, it is important to introduce a separation scale, or a cutoff. We employ a hybrid regularization, in which the loops with only contact interactions are regularized with Power Divergence Subtraction (PDS), while the loops with (long-distance part of) pion exchange are regularized with a Gaussian damping factor (GDF), to simplify the (nonperturbative) leading-order amplitudes. The scale introduced by PDS is identified with the cutoff of GDF up to a numerical factor. We emphasize that the introduction of the GDF requires a careful definition of the coupling constant for the pion exchange. We obtain the analytic expressions for the phase shifts for the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ channels. By fitting them to the Nijmegen partial wave analysis data, it is shown that the effective theory expansion with perturbative long-distance part of pion exchange is converging.

Abstract:Described is a 9421 line Fortran program PiN that solves momentum-space integral Lippmann-Schwinger equations for the scattering observables and the bound/resonant state properties of the coupled (pi N,pi Delta) system. The elementary interactions arise from the chiral color-dielectric quark and the cloudy bag models, which are computed by the code. On Two Nucleons Near Unitarity with Perturbative Pions

Abstract:We explore the expansion of two-nucleon S-wave scattering phase shifts and pole parameters about Unitarity in Chiral Effective Field Theory with Perturbative Pions at N2LO: the only LO scale is the scattering momentum; NLO adds scattering length, effective range and non-iterated one-pion exchange (OPE); N2LO adds once-iterated OPE. We take advantage of the high degree of symmetry of the nontrivial fixed point at Unitarity, where Physics is universal and invariant under both scaling and Wigner's combined SU(4) transformation of spin and isospin. Both are explicitly but weakly broken in the Unitarity Expansion, including by OPE. This version applies in the Unitarity Window (45deg<delta(k)<135deg), including around k=mpi. Agreement in the 1S0 channel is very good. Apparent large discrepancies in the 3S1 channel at k>100MeV are remedied by taking only the central part of the pion's N2LO contribution. In contradistinction to the tensor part, it is invariant under Wigner-SU(4) symmetry and hence identical in 1S0 and 3S1. NLO pions are Wigner-invariant. In the resulting $\chi$EFT with Perturbative Pions in the Unitarity Expansion, both channels describe PWAs and empirical pole parameters well within several mutually consistent quantitative theory uncertainty estimates. Pionic effects are small, even for k>mpi. Empirically determined breakdown scales agree well with $\Lambda_{NN}=\frac{16\pi f_\pi^2}{g_A^2M}$=300MeV where iterated OPE is not suppressed. We therefore hypothesise: The footprint of both scale invariance and Wigner-symmetry in the Unitarity Expansion shows persistence, i.e. both dominate even for k=mpi and are more relevant than chiral symmetry, so that the tensor/Wigner-SU(4) symmetry-breaking part of OPE does not enter before N3LO. We also speculate that this may resolve a conflict with the strength of the tensor interaction in the large-Nc expansion.

Abstract:The coupled reaction channel approach has proven to be quite effective in explaining the mechanism of nucleon transfer in heavy-ion reactions. Nevertheless, significant ambiguities remain regarding the selection of potential parameters and the states of the nuclei that should be coupled together for a specific reaction channel. Using the coupled reaction channel formalism, we have analyzed the excitation functions for one- and two-neutron transfer in 6,7 Li-induced reactions on various targets. Spectroscopic amplitudes are taken from existing literature and shell model calculations. The one-neutron transfer cross sections from 6 Li+ 93 Nb and 7 Li+ 115 In reactions are reasonably well reproduced by coupled reaction channel calculations. A reasonable match for the measured cross sections was obtained for the two-neutron transfer in 7 Li+ 181 Ta reaction by employing the extreme cluster model.

Coupled-Channel Effects in Collisions between Heavy Ions near the Coulomb Barrier

Abstract:With the recent availability of state-of-the-art heavy-ion stable and radioactive beams, there has been a renew interest in the investigation of nuclear reactions with heavy ions. I first present the role of inelastic and transfer channel couplings in fusion reactions induced by stable heavy ions. Analysis of experimental fusion cross sections by using standard coupled-channel calculations is discussed. The role of multi-neutron transfer is investigated in the fusion process below the Coulomb barrier by analyzing $^{32}$S+$^{90,96}$Zr as benchmark reactions. The enhancement of fusion cross sections for $^{32}$S+$^{96}$Zr is well reproduced at sub-barrier energies by NTFus code calculations including the coupling of the neutron-transfer channels following the Zagrebaev semi-classical model. Similar effects for $^{40}$Ca+$^{90}$Zr and $^{40}$Ca+$^{96}$Zr fusion excitation functions are found. The breakup coupling in both the elastic scattering and in the fusion process induced by weakly bound stable projectiles is also shown to be crucial. In this lecture, full coupled-channel calculations of the fusion excitation functions are performed by using the breakup coupling for the more neutron-rich reaction and for the more weakly bound projectiles. I clearly demonstrate that Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channel calculations are capable to reproduce the fusion enhancement from the breakup coupling in $^{6}$Li+$^{59}$Co.

Abstract:In view of persisting misunderstanding about the determination of the pion-nucleon coupling constants in the Nijmegen multienergy partial-wave analyses of pp, np, and pbar-p scattering data, we present additional information which may clarify several points of discussion. We comment on several recent papers addressing the issue of the pion-nucleon coupling constant and criticizing the Nijmegen analyses.

Leading order covariant chiral nucleon nucleon interaction

Abstract:Motivated by the successes of relativistic theories in studies of atomic/molecular and nuclear systems and the strong need for a covariant chiral force in relativistic nuclear structure studies, we develop a new covariant scheme to construct the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The chiral interaction is formulated up to leading order with a covariant power counting and a Lorentz invariant chiral Lagrangian. We find that the covariant scheme induces all the six spin operators needed to describe the nuclear force, which are also helpful to achieve cutoff independence for certain partial waves. A detailed investigation of the partial wave potentials shows a better description of the scattering phase shifts with low angular momenta than the leading order Weinberg approach. Particularly, the description of the $^1S_0$, $^3P_0$, and $^1P_1$ partial waves is similar to that of the next-to-leading order Weinberg approach. Our study shows that the relativistic framework presents a more efficient formulation of the chiral nuclear force.
Electromagnetic Single-nucleon Response involving Polarized Targets

Abstract:This work is an extension of our past study focused on a covariant representation of the electromagnetic (EM) current of spin-1/2 Dirac particles, specifically, nucleons. In the past study the EM responses that occur in unpolarized electron scattering from unpolarized nucleons were derived; however, scattering of polarized electrons from polarized nucleons was beyond the scope of that earlier work. Here such extensions are studied in detail. While in other work the EM response has already been developed for the double-polarization scattering problem, that effort was focused on high-energy collider physics. In the present study the formalism is recast into a set of EM response functions that have transparent dependencies on the relevant kinematic variables, especially on how these behave with respect to the momentum p of the (moving) struck, polarized nucleon. The motivation for such a reformulation of the problem is the desire to see a clear path to expansions in $p$ of the EM response for use in devising ``prescriptions for nuclear physics''. Results are provided where comparisons of the full (unexpanded) responses with various approximations that are frequently employed in studies of EM nuclear physics are made, demonstrating that under some circumstances such approximations are reasonable, whereas in other circumstances the expanded results are likely to be invalid. In addition, the EM current operators and approximations to them are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In this work, we apply the relativistic chiral nuclear force to describe the state-of-the-art lattice simulations of the nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitude. In particular, we focus on the $^3S_1$-$^3D_1$ coupled channel for a pion mass of 469 MeV. We show that at leading order the relativistic chiral nuclear force can only describe $\delta_{3S1}$ and $\varepsilon_1$ up to $T_\mathrm{lab.}\approx10$ MeV, while at the next-to-leading order it can do much better up to $T_\mathrm{lab}=200$ MeV. However, at the next-to-next-to-leading order, the description deteriorates, which can be attributed to the fact that the pion-mass dependence of the pion-nucleon couplings $c_{1,2,3,4}$ may not be negligible. Furthermore, all the studies consistently yield negative $\delta_{3D1}$, contrary to the lattice QCD results which are positive but consistent with zero. The present study is relevant to a better understanding of the lattice QCD nucleon-nucleon force and more general baryon-baryon interactions.
A unitary coupled-channel three-body amplitude with pions and kaons

Abstract:Three-body dynamics above threshold is required for the reliable extraction of many amplitudes and resonances from experiment and lattice QCD. The S-matrix principle of unitarity can be used to construct dynamical coupled-channel approaches in which three particles scatter off each other, re-arranging two-body subsystems by particle exchange. This paper reports the development of a three-body coupled-channel, amplitude including pions and kaons. The unequal-mass amplitude contains two-body S- and P-wave subsystems ("isobars") of all isospins, $I=0,\,1/2,\,1,\, 3/2, \, 2$, and it also allows for transitions within a given isobar. The $f_0(500)\, ("\sigma"),\,f_0(980),\,\rho(700), K_0^*(700)\,("\kappa")$, and $K^*(892)$ resonances are included, apart from repulsive isobars. Different methods to evaluate the amplitude for physical momenta are discussed. Production amplitudes for $a_1$ quantum numbers are shown as a proof of principle for the numerical implementation.

Abstract:The covariant density functional theory with a few number of parameters allows a very successful phenomenological description of ground state properties of nuclei all over the nuclear chart. The newly proposed point-coupling parametrization PC-PK1 [1] and its application is reported. In particular, the description of the nuclear ground state properties and the neutron single-particle spectrum in Sn-132 is discussed in details.

Abstract:We study S -wave interactions in the I(Jp)=1/2(1/2−) ΛcK+−pDs system on the basis of the coupled-channel Hadrons to Atomic nuclei from Lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics method. The potentials which are faithful to QCD S-matrix below the pD* threshold are extracted from Nambu-Bethe-Salpeter wave functions on the lattice in flavor SU(3) limit. For the simulation, we employ 3-flavor full QCD gauge configurations on a (1.93 fm)3 volume at mπ≃872 MeV . We present our results of the S-wave coupled-channel potentials for the ΛcK+−pDs system in the 1/2(1/2−) state as well as scattering observables obtained from the extracted potential matrix. We observe that the coupling between ΛcK+ and pDs channels is weak. The phase shifts and scattering length obtained from the extracted potential matrix show that the ΛcK+ interaction is attractive at low energy and stronger than the pDs interaction though no bound state at mπ≥872 MeV . https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.109.074506 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Relativistic Chiral Description of the 1 S 0 Nucleon–Nucleon Scattering

Abstract:Recently, a relativistic chiral nucleon–nucleon interaction was formulated up to leading order, which provides a good description of the phase shifts of J ≤ 1 partial waves [Chin. Phys. C 42 (2018) 014103]. Nevertheless, a separable regulator function that is not manifestly covariant was used in solving the relativistic scattering equation. In the present work, we first explore a covariant and separable form factor to regularize the kernel potential and then apply it to study the simplest but most challenging 1 S 0 channel which features several low-energy scales. In addition to being self-consistent, we show that the resulting relativistic potential can describe quite well the unique features of the 1 S 0 channel at leading order, in particular the pole position of the virtual bound state and the zero amplitude at the scattering momentum ∼ 340 MeV, indicating that the relativistic formulation may be more natural from the viewpoint of effective field theories.
