Abstract:In this paper,we define the weak qusi-normal cone condition and consider the nonlinear homotopy equation under the weak quasi-normal cone condition to solve constrained non-convex programming program.For almost all the point in some feasible subset, the existence of the homotopy path is proved and the homotopy path converges to the K-K-T point.Numerical examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Convex optimization encompasses a wide range of optimization problems, containing many efficiently solvable subclasses. Interior point methods are currently the state-of-the-art approach for solving such problems, particularly effective for classes like semidefinite programming, quadratic programming, and geometric programming. However, their success hinges on the construction of self-concordant barrier functions for the feasible sets. In this work, we introduce an alternative method for tackling convex optimization problems, employing a homotopy. With this technique, the feasible set of a trivial optimization problem is continuously transformed into the target one, while tracking the solutions. We conduct an analysis of this approach, focusing on its application to semidefinite programs, hyperbolic programs, and convex optimization problems with a single convexity constraint. Moreover, we demonstrate that our approach numerically outperforms state-of-the-art methods in several interesting cases.

We construct a homotopy path for the linear complementarity problem and prove that the homotopy path determines a smooth interior path from an arbitrary given interior point to the solution of LCP. Efficient Algorithm for Solving Hyperbolic Programs

Abstract:Hyperbolic polynomials is a class of real-roots polynomials that has wide range of applications in theoretical computer science. Each hyperbolic polynomial also induces a hyperbolic cone that is of particular interest in optimization due to its generality, as by choosing the polynomial properly, one can easily recover the classic optimization problems such as linear programming and semidefinite programming. In this work, we develop efficient algorithms for hyperbolic programming, the problem in each one wants to minimize a linear objective, under a system of linear constraints and the solution must be in the hyperbolic cone induced by the hyperbolic polynomial. Our algorithm is an instance of interior point method (IPM) that, instead of following the central path, it follows the central Swath, which is a generalization of central path. To implement the IPM efficiently, we utilize a relaxation of the hyperbolic program to a quadratic program, coupled with the first four moments of the hyperbolic eigenvalues that are crucial to update the optimization direction. We further show that, given an evaluation oracle of the polynomial, our algorithm only requires $O(n^2d^{2.5})$ oracle calls, where $n$ is the number of variables and $d$ is the degree of the polynomial, with extra $O((n+m)^3 d^{0.5})$ arithmetic operations, where $m$ is the number of constraints.

Abstract:Multi-homogeneous homotopy continuation method is one of the most efficient approaches in solving all isolated solutions of a polynomial system of equations. Finding the optimal partition of variables with the minimal multihomogeneous Bezout number is clearly an optimization problem. Multi-homogeneous continuation using the optimal partition of variables reduces the computational cost in path tracking to the minimum. In this article, a heuristic method for finding the optimal variable partition is constructed based on backward greedy idea. Numerical examples show the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:This paper studies the problem of minimizing hinging hyperplanes (HH) which is a widely applied nonlinear model. To deal with HH minimization, we transform it into a d.c. (difference of convex functions) programming and a concave minimization on a polyhedron, then some mature techniques are applicable. More importantly, HH is a continuous piecewise linear function and for concave HH, the super-level sets are polyhedra. Inspired by this property, we establish a method which searches on the counter map in order to escape a local optimum. Intuitively, this method bypasses the super-level set and is hence called hill detouring method, following the name of hill climbing. In numerical experiments, the proposed algorithm is compared with CPLEX and a heuristic algorithm showing its effectiveness.

Abstract:We show in this paper that via certain convexification, concavification and monotonization schemes a nonconvex optimization problem over a simplex can be always converted into an equivalent better-structured nonconvex optimization problem, e.g., a concave optimization problem or a D.C. programming problem, thus facilitating the search of a global optimum by using the existing methods in concave minimization and D.C. programming. We first prove that a monotone optimization problem (with a monotone objective function and monotone constraints) can be transformed into a concave minimization problem over a convex set or a D.C. programming problem via p th power transformation. We then prove that a class of nonconvex minimization problems can be always reduced to a monotone optimization problem, thus a concave minimization problem or a D.C. programming problem.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the convex min-max problem with infinite constraints. We propose an exchange method to solve the problem by using efficient inactive constraint dropping rules. There is no need to solve the maximization problem over the metric space, as the algorithm has merely to find some points in the metric space such that a certain criterion is satisfied at each iteration. Under some mild assumptions, the proposed algorithm is shown to terminate in a finite number of iterations and to provide an approximate solution to the original problem. Preliminary numerical results with the algorithm are promising. To our knowledge, this article is the first one conceived to apply explicit exchange methods for solving nonlinear semi-infinite convex min-max problems.

Abstract:Convex approximation sets for multiobjective optimization problems are a well-studied relaxation of the common notion of approximation sets. Instead of approximating each image of a feasible solution by the image of some solution in the approximation set up to a multiplicative factor in each component, a convex approximation set only requires this multiplicative approximation to be achieved by some convex combination of finitely many images of solutions in the set. This makes convex approximation sets efficiently computable for a wide range of multiobjective problems - even for many problems for which (classic) approximations sets are hard to compute. In this article, we propose a polynomial-time algorithm to compute convex approximation sets that builds upon an exact or approximate algorithm for the weighted sum scalarization and is, therefore, applicable to a large variety of multiobjective optimization problems. The provided convex approximation quality is arbitrarily close to the approximation quality of the underlying algorithm for the weighted sum scalarization. In essence, our algorithm can be interpreted as an approximate variant of the dual variant of Benson's Outer Approximation Algorithm. Thus, in contrast to existing convex approximation algorithms from the literature, information on solutions obtained during the approximation process is utilized to significantly reduce both the practical running time and the cardinality of the returned solution sets while still guaranteeing the same worst-case approximation quality. We underpin these advantages by the first comparison of all existing convex approximation algorithms on several instances of the triobjective knapsack problem and the triobjective symmetric metric traveling salesman problem.

Abstract:In multi-objective convex optimization it is necessary to compute an infinite set of nondominated points. We propose a method for approximating the nondominated set of a multi-objective nonlinear programming problem, where the objective functions and the feasible set are convex. This method is an extension of Benson’s outer approximation algorithm for multi-objective linear programming problems. We prove that this method provides a set of weakly ε-nondominated points. For the case that the objectives and constraints are differentiable, we describe an efficient way to carry out the main step of the algorithm, the construction of a hyperplane separating an exterior point from the feasible set in objective space. We provide examples that show that this cannot always be done in the same way in the case of non-differentiable objectives or constraints.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new homotopy method which is a non-interior point homotopy method for solving semi-infinite programming problems. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that the method determines a smooth path from a given point. The new homotopy method generalizes the existing combined homotopy interior point method for semi-infinite programming problems to unbounded set, moreover, it is more convenient in that it enlarges the choice scope of the initial point. Some numerical examples are given to show its efficiency.
A Minimization Approach for Minimax Optimization with Coupled Constraints

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization problem (MCC), where the inner maximization subproblem contains constraints that couple the primal variable of the outer minimization problem. We prove that by introducing the dual variable of the inner maximization subproblem, (MCC) has the same first-order minimax points as a nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization problem without coupled constraints (MOL). We then extend our focus to a class of nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization problems (MM) that generalize (MOL). By performing the partial forward-backward envelope to the primal variable of the inner maximization subproblem, we propose a minimization problem (MMPen), where its objective function is explicitly formulated. We prove that the first-order stationary points of (MMPen) coincide with the first-order minimax points of (MM). Therefore, various efficient minimization methods and their convergence guarantees can be directly employed to solve (MM), hence solving (MCC) through (MOL). Preliminary numerical experiments demonstrate the great potential of our proposed approach.
