Abstract:Oil leakage, which is inevitable in the process of extraction, processing, transportation and storage, seriously undermines the soil and groundwater environment. Surfactants can facilitate the migration and solution of oil contaminants from nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) or solid phase to water by reducing the (air/water) surface tension, (oil/water) interfacial tension and micellar solubilization. They can effectively enhance the hydrodynamic driven remediation technologies by improving the contact efficiency of contaminants and liquid remediation agents or microorganism, and have been widely used to enhance the remediation of oil-contaminated sites. This paper summarizes the characteristics of different types of surfactants such as nonionic, anionic, biological and mixed surfactants, their enhancements to the remediation of oil-contaminated soil and groundwater, and examines the factors influencing surfactant performance. The causes of tailing and rebound effects and the role of surfactants in suppressing them are also discussed. Laboratory researches and actual site remediation practices have shown that various types of surfactants offer diverse options. Biosurfactants and mixed surfactants are superior and worth attention among the surfactants. Using surfactant foams, adding shear-thinning polymers, and combining surfactants with in-situ chemical oxidation are effective ways to resolve tailing and rebound effects. The adsorption of surfactants on soils and aquifer sediments decreases remediation efficiency and may cause secondary pollution, Therefore the adsorption loss should be noticed and minimized.

Abstract:As the energy demand increases, there is a significant expansion and utilization of oil resources, resulting in the inevitable occurrence of environmental pollution. Oil has been identified as a prevalent soil contaminant, posing substantial risks to the soil ecosystems. The remediation of soil contaminated with oil is a formidable undertaking. Increasing evidence shows that chemical washing, a remediation technique employing chemical reagents like surfactants to augment the solubilization, desorption, and separation of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil, proves to be an efficacious approach, but the latest advances on this topic have not been systematically reviewed. Here, we present the state of knowledge about the surfactant-based chemical washing to remediate oil-contaminated soil. Using the latest data, the present article systematically summarizes the advancements on ex situ chemical washing of oil pollution and provides a concise summary of the underlying principles. The use of various surfactants in chemical washing and the factors influencing remediation efficiency are highlighted. Based on the current research status and knowledge gaps, future perspectives are proposed to facilitate chemical washing of oil-polluted soil. This review can help recognize the application of chemical washing in the remediation of oil-polluted soil.

Abstract:The chemical cleaning method applied to the remediation of petroleum contaminated soil has the advantages of short remediation time, simple operation, low energy consumption, wide adaptability and eluted oil recycling. In this paper, the researches on the remediation of petroleum contaminated soil by chemical cleaning in recent years were reviewed from the aspects of surfactant mixing, additive application, process intensification and the effects of the properties of petroleum contaminated soil. In order to promote the practical application of the chemical cleaning method, it was recommended to research further the interaction mechanism between surfactants and between surfactant and additive, explore systematically the effects of properties of petroleum contaminated soil on the cleaning technology, investigate the methods to reduce the adverse effects of chemical cleaning on soil properties, and study intensively the recycling and effective treatment of waste water.

Abstract:This study investigated the effectiveness of various surfactants at different concentrations in removing high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from soil with high mineral content, focusing on the impact of surfactant treatment on the mobility of the residual PAHs in soil. The results revealed that the cationic surfactant (CTMAB) inhibited removal of PAHs in the whole tested concentration range of 0.1–8 g/L. In contrast, the non-ionic and anionic surfactants (Triton X-100 and SDBS) significantly enhanced removal of PAHs as their amendment concentrations reached 2 g/L and above. Triton X-100 exhibited steadily increased efficacy with increasing amendment concentrations and maintained favorable solubilization capability when continuously amended, making it the preferable choice for remediating PAHs-contaminated soil. Surfactant and water washing processes altered soil physicochemical properties by removing some clay minerals (e.g., faujasite) and organic matter that can bind or sequester PAHs, potentially increasing their extractability and bioavailability in the washed soil, thereby posing higher ecological risks compared to the original one. Although soil washing decreased retention of the remaining PAHs in soil, it did not significantly impact PAHs release from soil by flowing water. These findings provide insights into the long-term effectiveness and ecological impacts of surfactant-enhanced washing as a potential remediation technique for PAHs-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Organic-contaminated soils are a major health issue because pollutants can be transferred to waters, air, and living organisms. Many remediation technologies have been developed, yet single methods are usually not fully efficient due to the wide diversity of soil and pollutant properties. Therefore, combining several methods has recently shown wider application range, higher efficiency, and better economic benefits. Here we compare combined remediation technologies to clean organic-contaminated soils, with focus on physical–chemical, physical–chemical-biological, and biological-microbial methods. Physical–chemical methods are the most widely used due to their high efficiency, yet they are costly, and they alter soil properties. These issues can be alleviated by adding a biological treatment. Combined biological-microbial methods are more recent and rely on bioengineering.

Abstract:Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation (SEBR) is frequently employed to clean up soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons, but few studies have focused on how surfactants affect microbial communities and different fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons, particularly in the field. Here, the surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween80, and rhamnolipid were combined with the oil-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. SB to remediate oil-contaminated soil in the laboratory. AOS gave the highest removal efficiency (65.1%) of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Therefore, AOS was used in a field experiment with Pseudomonas sp. SB and the removal efficiency of TPHs and long-chain hydrocarbons C21-C40 reached 57.4 and 53.0%, respectively, significantly higher than the other treatments. During bioremediation the addition of Pseudomonas sp. SB significantly stimulated the growth of bacterial genera such as Alcanivorax, Luteimonas, Parvibaculum, Stenotrophomonas, and Pseudomonas and AOS further stimulated the growth of Sphingobacterium, Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax. This study validates the feasibility of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation in the field and partly reveals the mechanism of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation from the perspective of changes in different fractions of petroleum and microbial community dynamics.

Abstract:Petroleum hydrocarbons as pervasive pollutants pose a significant threat to soil ecology and human health. Surfactant washing as an established technique can effectively remediate soils contaminated by hydrocarbons. Biosurfactants, which combine the properties of surfactants and environmental compatibility, have attracted increasing interest. However, due to the high production cost of biosurfactants, their practical application is restricted. This study addressed these limitations by selecting two biosurfactants, β-cyclodextrin (C1) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (C2), and developed a promising cleaning agent formula through compounding and the addition of suitable additives. When the volume ratio of C1 to C2 was 8:2 and an 8 g/L mixture of sodium humate and sodium carbonate electrolyte was added, the surfactant system's surface tension reached a minimum, yielding optimal oil removal. The formation and synergistic behaviour of mixed micelles of surfactants were explained using ideal solution theory and the Rubingh model. By optimising the oil washing process parameters – normal temperature of 25 °C, pH 11, washing time of 2 h, solid–liquid ratio of 1:5, and oscillation frequency of 200 r/min – the oil removal rate achieved 76%. This cleaning agent, characterised by low production cost, straightforward application, environmental compatibility, and rapid, significant cleaning effect, shows potential for field-scale purification of petroleum-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Soil washing is widely considered as a common method of soil remediation. This study examined the developments in soil washing during the past 20 years via a bibliometric and systematic critical review. Different washing agents (inorganic and organic chelating agents and surfactants) exhibit different effects and mechanisms under varying conditions. Most previous research has involved only laboratory-scale studies; however, pilot field studies are more relevant to actual conditions and soil characteristics. Soil factors include physical and chemical properties, coexisting ion species content, and heavy metals and their forms in the soil. Washing conditions include type of leaching agent, concentration, pH, time, and solid–liquid ratio. Combinations of remediation techniques, such as advanced oxidation, electric remediation, and phytoremediation, can avoid many disadvantages of using only soil washing. In future soil washing studies, focus must be placed on developing environmentally friendly washing agents, optimizing washing conditions while reducing economic costs and preventing destruction of the function of the soil, problems associated with complex pollution, and the entire soil–ground environment to avoid groundwater pollution. This study expects for relevant research directions and provides guidance for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the huge toxicity of co-contaminated soil with PAHs and heavy metals and the complexity of their remediation, it is thus critical to take effective remediation actions to remove heavy metals and PAHs simultaneously from the co-contaminated soil. Biosurfactant-enhanced soil washing (BESW) were investigated in this study for remediation of soil co-contaminated with phenanthrene (PHE) and cadmium (Cd). The co-existence of PHE and Cd caused the change of the structure of soil and rhamnolipid micelle, which lead to different removal rate of PHE and Cd from co-contaminated soil compared with single contaminated soil. The results of FT-IR and NMR showed that PHE entered micelles of rhamnolipid and Cd formed the complexation with the external carboxyl groups of rhamnolipid micelle. We also found that pH, concentration of rhamnolipid solution, temperature and ionic strength had influence on co-contaminated soil remediation. The effects of above mentioned four factors on co-contaminated soil remediation in BESW processes were analyzed by using Taguchi design of experiment method. Taguchi based Grey Relational Analysis was conducted to identify the optimal remediation conditions, which included pH = 9, concentration of rhamnolipid = 5 g/L, temperature = 15 °C and ionic strength = 0.01 M. Under the optimal conditions for BESW, removal rates of cadmium and phenanthrene reached 72.4% and 87.8%, respectively in co-contaminated soil.

Abstract:The objective of this review is to highlight the need for further investigation of microbial toxicity caused by desorption of surfactant from Surfactant Modified Zeolite (SMZ). SMZ is a low cost, versatile permeable reactive media which has the potential to treat multiple classes of contaminants. With this combination of characteristics, SMZ has significant potential to enhance water and wastewater treatment processes. Surfactant desorption has been identified as a potential issue for the ongoing usability of SMZ. Few studies have investigated the toxicity of surfactants used in zeolite modification towards microorganisms and fewer have drawn linkages between surfactant desorption and surfactant toxicity. This review provides an overview of natural zeolite chemistry, characteristics and practical applications. The chemistry of commonly used surfactants is outlined, along with the kinetics that drive their adsorption to the zeolite surface. Methodologies to characterise this surfactant loading are also described. Applications of SMZ in water remediation are highlighted, giving focus to applications which deal with biological pollutants and where microorganisms play a role in the remediation process. Studies that have identified surfactant desorption from SMZ are outlined. Finally, the toxicity of a commonly used cationic surfactant towards microorganisms is discussed. This review highlights the potential for surfactant to desorb from the zeolite surface and the need for further research into the toxicity of this desorbed surfactant towards microorganisms, including pathogens and environmental microbes.

Abstract:Remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with toxic metals has been a major environmental challenge for decades. Yet, cost-effective and sustainable in situ remediation technologies remain lacking. Over the last 15 years or so, an innovative in situ remediation strategy has shown promising by means of stabilized nanoparticles. Stabilized nanoparticles are prepared using novel stabilizers that facilitate the deliverability and transport of nanoparticles in the subsurface. This study reviews synthesis and characterization of some model stabilized nanoparticles and their application for remediation of metal-contaminated soil and water. Fate and transport of these stabilized nanoparticles in groundwater and soil are also examined. Lastly, this review identifies the key knowledge gaps such as lack of field data pertaining to the long-term effectiveness of the immobilized metals and impacts of the delivered nanoparticles on the biogeochemical conditions in the subsurface. The information may facilitate further development of this promising remediation technology.

Abstract:Soil with heavy metals' contamination has caused worldwide concern, and there is an increasing interest in the application of washing agents for the remediation of soils with heavy metals' contamination. The review summarizes the recent findings about soil washing with different washing agents. For soil washing technologies, the solubilizing capability, toxicity, and biocompatibility of agents are essential concerns. Washing agents can enhance heavy metals' desorption and removal from soil. Inorganic acids/bases/salts, synthetic surfactants, and synthetic chelators are often limited due to their adverse effects on soil. Biosurfactants, HAs (humic acids), and LMWOA (low-molecular-weight organic acids) are suggested washing agents, but the limitation of their low production needs to be conquered. Moreover, both washing with a mixture agent and sequential washing have often been adopted to improve the overall capacity of the washing agent for decontamination. Mixture washing can obtain the synergetic effect for soil washing and increase washing efficiency. Sequential washing can apply an agent with a high heavy metals removal rate. However, this may cause environmental risks in the early stage, and then remove the washing agent injected in the early stage by the secondary washing stage. Overall, the already known cases reveal the good prospect of soil washing for soil remediation.

Abstract:The occurrence of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in the soil has become a highly significant environmental issue. This problem has been exacerbated by the strong sorption of HOCs to the soils, which makes them unavailable for most remediation processes. More and more works show that surfactant-enhanced biological technologies offer a great potential to clear up HOCs-contaminated soils. This article is a critical review of HOCs removal from soils using Tween 80 (one of the mostly used nonionic surfactants) aided biological remediation technologies. The review begins with a discussion of the fundamentals of Tween 80-enhanced desorption of HOCs from contaminated soils, with special emphasis on the biotoxicity of Tween 80. Successful results obtained by Tween 80-enhanced microbial degradation and phytoremediation are documented and discussed in section 3 and section 4, respectively. Results show Tween 80-enhanced biotechnologies are promising for treating HOCs-contaminated soils. However, considering the fact that most of these scientific studies have only been conducted at the laboratory-scale, many improvements are required before these technologies can be scaled up to the full-scale level. Moreover, further research on mechanisms related to the interaction of Tween 80 with degrading microorganisms and the plants is in high demand.

Abstract:The sorption of surfactants onto soils has a significant effect on the performance of surfactant enhanced desorption. In this study, the efficiency of surfactants in enhancing desorption for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soils relative to water was evaluated with a term of relative efficiency coefficient (REC). Since the sorption of surfactants onto soils, surfactants only enhanced PAH desorption when REC values were larger than 1 and the added surfactant concentration was greater than the corresponding critical enhance desorption concentration (CEDC), which was defined as the corresponding surfactant concentration with REC=1. A model was utilized to describe and predict the REC and CEDC values for PAH desorption. The model and experimental results indicated that the efficiency of surfactants in enhancing PAH desorption showed strong dependence on the soil composition, surfactant structure and PAH properties. These results are of practical interest for the selection of surfactant to optimize soil remediation technologies.
Laboratory Characterization of Surfactant-Enhanced Air Sparging Effectiveness on VOC-Contaminated Soil with Low Permeability

Abstract:Surfactant-enhanced air sparging (SEAS) technology has been widely accepted to remediate VOC-contaminated soil with medium or high permeability, while the remediation efficiency and mechanism in low permeability soil have been rarely explored, which is of great importance to the field implementation due to the heterogeneous stratigraphic distribution at site. For this purpose, the surfactant-enhanced single air channel sparging tests and solubilization/desorption tests are comprehensively designed and performed in this study. Results showed that the exhaust gaseous MTBE concentration is significantly lower, and the time to reach concentration equilibrium is longer for air sparging in low permeability soil, which could be modified with surfactant incorporation. The reduced MTBE concentration, enlarged remediation zone, and the total MTBE removal rate in the low permeability soil could be observed after implementing the SEAS technology and will be further enhanced with sparging pressure increasing. The mass transfer zone (MTZ) in low permeability soil is enlarged with the increased surfactant concentration, based on which an exponential growth relation is established for MTZ quantitative prediction. The improved remediation efficiency of SEAS technology on low permeability soil is confirmed to be controlled by the contaminant solubilization/desorption mechanism, rather than the surface tension reduction mechanism that was conventionally confirmed in medium or high permeability soil.

Abstract:This review aims to provide an overview of the sources and reactions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and surfactants in soil and sediments, the surfactant-enhanced solubilisation of POPs, and the unintended consequences of surfactant-induced remediation of soil and sediments contaminated with POPs. POPs include chemical compounds that are recalcitrant to natural degradation through photolytic, chemical, and biological processes in the environment. POPs are potentially toxic compounds mainly used in pesticides, solvents, pharmaceuticals, or industrial applications and pose a significant and persistent risk to the ecosystem and human health. Surfactants can serve as detergents, wetting and foaming compounds, emulsifiers, or dispersants, and have been used extensively to promote the solubilization of POPs and their subsequent removal from environmental matrices, including solid wastes, soil, and sediments. However, improper use of surfactants for remediation of POPs may lead to unintended consequences that include toxicity of surfactants to soil microorganisms and plants, and leaching of POPs, thereby resulting in groundwater contamination.

Abstract:Chemical washing applied to the remediation of soil contaminated with oil pollutants is a new technique developed in recent years.Application of ex-situ chemical washing technology in remediation of soil contaminated with oil pollutants and the corresponding progress are described in detail.This paper focuses on characteristics of washing technology,mechanisms of chemical washing,selection of washing agent and influencing factor of washing efficiency.Problems and technical difficulties in remediation of oil contaminated soil by chemical washing and the prospect of further research and application are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Due to improved soil deliverability and high reactivity, stabilized nanoparticles have been studied for nearly two decades for in situ remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated with organic pollutants. While large amounts of bench- and field-scale experimental data have demonstrated the potential of the innovative technology, extensive research results have also unveiled various merits and constraints associated different soil characteristics, types of nanoparticles and particle stabilization techniques. Overall, this work aims to critically overview the fundamental principles on particle stabilization, and the evolution and some recent developments of stabilized nanoparticles for degradation of organic contaminants in soil and groundwater. The specific objectives are to: 1) overview fundamental mechanisms in nanoparticle stabilization; 2) summarize key applications of stabilized nanoparticles for in situ remediation of soil and groundwater contaminated by legacy and emerging organic chemicals; 3) update the latest knowledge on the transport and fate of stabilized nanoparticles; 4) examine the merits and constraints of stabilized nanoparticles in environmental remediation applications; and 5) identify the knowledge gaps and future research needs pertaining to stabilized nanoparticles for remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. Per instructions of this invited special issue, this review is focused on contributions from our group (one of the pioneers in the subject field), which, however, is supplemented by important relevant works by others. The knowledge gained is expected to further advance the science and technology in the environmental applications of stabilized nanoparticles.
