Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:Potassium dichromate supported on neutral alumina is a heterogeneous catalyst for the liquid phase oxidation of hydrocarbons. The material has been used to catalyse the oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone using air as the consumable oxidant with high selectivity and is truly catalytic in the metal, unlike homogeneous Cr(VI) systems. Optimisation of reaction conditions has been achieved in terms of air flow rate, agitator speed, and catalyst quantity. An induction period prior to achievement of maximum catalytic turnover, which is proportional to both temperature and the concentration of catalyst, may be reduced by doping the substrate with 5-15% acetophenone (w/w) and eliminated by doping with 30% (w/w) acetophenone , A rate of conversion of ca. 3.8% h(-1) (0.39 turnover s(-1)) may be achieved at a reaction temperature of 130 degrees C for a period of ca. 10 h before catalyst deactivation occurs. However, this rate may be maintained for periods in excess of 24 h by continuous addition of substrate to the reaction vessel in order to maintain a constant molar ratio of substrate to product, It may thus be concluded that, at high agitator speeds, the rate-limiting factor is adsorption/desorption at the catalyst surface (and is therefore affected by the overall polarity of the medium) rather than mass transfer between solid-liquid-gas interfaces, The catalyst has been successfully recovered and reused with no induction period, and initial activity is comparable with that for fresh catalyst, although deactivation occurs readily thereafter.

Abstract:Traditional C-H halogenation of organic compounds often requires corrosive agent or harsh condition, and current researches are focused on the use of noble metals as catalyst. In order to give an efficient, benign, activity-adjustable and cost-effective system for halogenation, a series of Ti-Al mixed oxides are prepared as catalyst through sol-gel in this work. Characterizations reveal all catalysts contain more aluminum than titanium, but preparative conditions affect their composition and crystallinity. Monitoring of particle size, zeta potential and UV-vis of preparative solution reveals that formation of catalyst colloids undergoes chemical reaction, affecting catalyst morphology. In halogenation, all catalysts show moderate to high activities, copper chloride proves to be an effective halogen source rather than sodium chloride. The chlorination and bromination are better than iodization, phenol and ketone appear to be more appropriate substrates than aldehyde. Additionally, oxide backbone of catalyst is more durable than its organic components during recycling. This study may provide new catalytic materials for progress of C-H activation.

Abstract:Active transition metal species (Co, Cu, Cr, Ni or Mn) supported on a chemically modified silica gel are used as heterogeneous catalysts in a range of Liquid phase oxidation reactions: alkyl aromatic side chain oxidations, epoxidations of alkenes and Baeyer-Villiger oxidations of linear ketones to esters and cyclic ketones to lactones. The catalyst employs metal centres bound to the silica surface via a hydrophobic spacer chain and is thus chemically robust and has a relatively high loading for a supported reagent (c 0.4mmolg(-1)). The Cr version of the catalyst promotes the oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenone in a solvent-free system at a rate of 5.5% h(-1) (>370 turnover h(-1)). It is also active for the oxidation of p-chlorotoluene and p-xylene to p-chlorobenzoic acid and p-toluic acid respectively. Cyclohexene is converted to its oxide at room temperature at a rate of c 28% h(-1) (c 12 turnover h(-1)) using either the Ni or Cu versions of the catalyst. The room temperature Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of cyclohexanone is achieved at a rate of 44% h(-1) (49 turnover h(-1)) using the Ni-containing catalyst. The same material also promotes the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of linear aliphatic ketones and aromatic side chains. All the above systems use either air or molecular oxygen as the oxidant rather than peroxides or peracids. (C) 1999 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The value of catalytic dehydrogenation of aliphatics (CDA) in organic synthesis has remained largely underexplored. Known homogeneous CDA systems often require the use of sacrificial hydrogen acceptors (or oxidants), precious metal catalysts, and harsh reaction conditions, thus limiting most existing methods to dehydrogenation of non- or low-functionalized alkanes. Here we describe a visible-light-driven, dual-catalyst system consisting of inexpensive organophotoredox and base-metal catalysts for room-temperature, acceptorless-CDA (Al-CDA). Initiated by photoexited 2-chloroanthraquinone, the process involves H atom transfer (HAT) of aliphatics to form alkyl radicals, which then react with cobaloxime to produce olefins and H2. This operationally simple method enables direct dehydrogenation of readily available chemical feedstocks to diversely functionalized olefins. For example, we demonstrate, for the first time, the oxidant-free desaturation of thioethers and amides to alkenyl sulfides and enamides, respectively. Moreover, the system's exceptional site selectivity and functional group tolerance are illustrated by late-stage dehydrogenation and synthesis of 14 biologically relevant molecules and pharmaceutical ingredients. However, their application in synthetic organic chemistry is exceedingly rare due to the challenging C–H bond cleavage, which typically demands high temperatures and pressures, thereby limiting their utility in the construction of complex organic molecules. In particular, the formation of C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds is crucial for constructing biologically active molecules, including pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. In this study, we present the previously elusive coupling between gaseous alkanes and (hetero)aryl bromides, achieved through a combination of Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT) photocatalysis and nickel-catalyzed cross coupling at room temperature. Utilizing flow technology allowed us to conduct this novel coupling reaction with reduced reaction times and in a scalable fashion, rendering it practical for widespread adoption in both academia and industry. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations unveiled that the oxidative addition constitutes the rate-determining step, with the activation energy barrier increasing with smaller alkyl radicals. Furthermore, radical isomerization observed in propane and butane analogues could be attributed to the electronic properties of the bromoarene coupling partner, highlighting the crucial role of oxidative addition in the observed selectivity of this transformation.

Abstract:With halogen-atom transfer as an effective tool, a novel catalytic enantioselective protocol to generate chiral trifluoromethylated alkynes has been established by a cooperative photoredox and nickel catalysis system, providing a straightforward and modular route to access this type of product in good yields and enantioselectivities. The halogen-atom transfer process is essential for the reaction and this novel strategy offers another promising way to utilize alkyl halides with highly negative reduction potentials. It firstly expands nickel-catalyzed asymmetric reductive cross-couplings of organohalides from the traditional single-electron transfer to halogen-atom transfer.

Abstract:A synergetic catalytic system of organophotocatalyst 4CzIPN, thianthrene, and methanol was developed for visible‐lightinduced Giese reactions of various alkanes and alkenes, upon using alkoxy radicals as hydrogen atom transfer reagents. The reaction can be performed under mild conditions to provide the alkylated products in moderate to excellent yields, avoiding the use of any strong oxidants and transition metal reagents. Different from the known LMCT and PCET processes, the key to success of this approach is the in situ thianthrenation of methanol by thianthrene radical cation to trigger the generation of methoxy radical.

Abstract:The formation of aldehydes and ketones via selective oxidation of alcohols is an essential transformation in organic synthesis. However, the usually harsh reaction conditions using toxic metal catalysts or corrosive reagents lead to undesired side products and wastes. Environmentally friendly and mild reaction conditions using metal-free catalysts remain a huge challenge. Herein, we report the use of a thiophene-based covalent triazine framework (CTF) as pure organic and visible-light-active photocatalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols at room temperature. Molecular oxygen was activated as a clean and selective oxidant. The high selectivity and efficiency of the pure organic photocatalyst could be demonstrated and were comparable to those of the state-of-art metal or nonmetal catalytic systems reported.

Abstract:Through effective regulation of active species in photocatalytic process, the oxidation or C(sp3)‐S bond cleavage upgrading of widespread aryl alkyl sulfides under mild conditions was successfully achieved by using a pyridinium photocatalyst. Benefiting from the excellent redox ability of the photocatalyst, the electron transfer between the pyridinium molecule and the substrate, molecular oxygen, or counter‐anion effectively promotes the conversion and upgrading of the substrate thioether. Among them, the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) enables the highly selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under visible light and air atmosphere. More importantly, the chlorine radical (Cl•) generated by electron transfer, reported for the first time, contributes to the cleavage of C(sp3)‐S bonds, achieving the transformation of aryl alkyl sulfides to disulfides. By harnessing the superior photocatalytic ability of pyridinium molecules, this work not only achieves the highly selective conversion of thioether by taming the active species in the photocatalytic process, but also sheds light on the untapped potential of chlorine radicals in the field of C(sp3)‐S bond activation and cleavage.

Abstract:Alkene hydrocarbofunctionalization represents one of the most important classes of chemical transformations, but related branched-selective examples with unactivated olefins are scarce. Here, we report that catalytic amounts of a dimeric Ni(I) complex and an exogenous alkoxide base promote Markovnikov-selective hydroarylation(alkenylation) of unactivated and activated olefins using organo bromides or triflates derived from widely available phenols and ketones. Products bearing aryl- and alkenyl-substituted tertiary and quaternary centers could be isolated in up to 95% yield and >99:1 regioisomeric ratios. Contrary to previous dual-catalytic methods that rely on metal-hydride atom transfer (MHAT) to the olefin prior to carbofunctionalization with a cocatalyst, our mechanistic evidence points toward a nonradical reaction pathway that begins with site-selective carbonickelation across the C═C bond followed by hydride transfer using alkoxide as the hydride source. Abstract:Asymmetric catalysis is an advanced area of chemical synthesis, but the handling of abundantly available, purely aliphatic hydrocarbons has proven to be challenging. Typically, heteroatoms or aromatic substructures are required in the substrates and reagents to facilitate an efficient interaction with the chiral catalyst. Confined acids have recently been introduced as tools for homogenous asymmetric catalysis, specifically to enable the processing of small unbiased substrates 1 . However, asymmetric reactions in which both substrate and product are purely aliphatic hydrocarbons have not previously been catalysed by such super strong and confined acids. We describe here an imidodiphosphorimidate-catalysed asymmetric Wagner–Meerwein shift of aliphatic alkenyl cycloalkanes to cycloalkenes with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity. Despite their long history and high relevance for chemical synthesis and biosynthesis, Wagner–Meerwein reactions utilizing purely aliphatic hydrocarbons, such as those originally reported by Wagner and Meerwein, had previously eluded asymmetric catalysis.

Abstract:One of the most useful transformations in the synthetic chemist arsenal is the oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl congeners. Despite its seemingly straightforward nature, this transformative reaction predominantly relies on the use of metals or hazardous reagents, making these processes highly unsustainable. To address this challenge, we have developed a sustainable metal‐free method for the oxidation of alcohols in continuous flow. Using a solid phase hypervalent iodine catalyst and nBu4HSO5 as a phase transfer catalyst and co‐oxidant, primary and secondary alcohols were selectively oxidized to the corresponding carbonyl motifs. This operationally simple continuous‐flow set‐up is highly robust (15 cycles run without significant catalyst leaching or loss of reaction efficiency), uses green solvents, such as acetonitrile or acetic acid, and is readily scalable.

Abstract:A novel strategy of visible‐light photoredox catalysis ipso‐annulation of activated alkynes with polychloroalkanes for the synthesis of 3‐polychloroalkyl spiro[4,5]trienones, which used 4‐methoxybenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate salt as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent, is described. This polychloroalkylation/ spirocyclization of alkynes offers a widely range of 3‐polychloroalkyl‐spiro[4,5]trienone derivatives in high yields with a broad substrate scope via selective C(sp3)‐H homolytic cleavage. The results of controlled experiments showed that this method involves a radical process. The polyhaloalkyl radical species generated from intermolecular hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) between aryl radical and polychloroalkanes.

The procedure employs diazenes as catalysts, which effect the cyclization of alkenyl alkyl halides to generate cyclic olefins and carbonyl products. The synthesis of phenanthrene, coumarin, and quinolone derivatives is demonstrated as well as the potential to apply this strategy to other electrophiles.

Abstract:Investigations into the selective oxidation of inert sp3 C-H bonds using polymer photocatalysts under mild conditions have been limited. Additionally, the structure-activity relationship of photocatalysts often remains insufficiently explored. Here, a series of thiophene-based covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are used for the efficient and selective oxidation of hydrocarbons to aldehydes or ketones under ambient aerobic conditions. Spectroscopic methods conducted in situ and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the sulfur atoms within the thiophene units play a pivotal role as oxidation sites due to the generation of photogenerated holes. The effect of photogenerated holes on photocatalytic toluene oxidation was investigated by varying the length of the spacer in a CTF donor-acceptor based photocatalyst. Furthermore, the manipulation of reactive oxygen species was employed to enhance selectivity by weakening the peroxidative capacity. As an illustrative example, this study successfully demonstrated the synthesis of a precursor of the neurological drug AMG-579 using a photocatalytic protocol.

Abstract:One-step hydroxylation of aromatics is an intriguing topic in catalysis for its useful materials in industry and organic synthesis for more than a century. This review systematically outlines the progress of catalytic hydroxylation of aromatics in liquid/homogeneous phase systems with the emphasis on the active species and reaction mechanisms based on the different active center of atoms such as iron, vanadium, copper and palladium since 1990's. Developing a two-phase mimicbiological catalytic system seems to be primary trend by synthesis a kind of complex containing N, O ligands for liquid aromatic hydroxylation to overcome the drawbacks of traditional catalytic systems. Several active species of hydroxo radical, high value metal oxo and peroxo and hydroxo as well as mechanism of radicals and complexes were suggested via using advanced analytic technologies. Though some of these mechanisms are still disputable, this review could offer a more thorough consideration of mechanisms of hydroxylation. for understanding some reactions more profoundly.
