Abstract:The Ministry of Agriculture has drafted a prescription for raising animals for fur production. It contains high standards of knowledge about raising, feeding and care for those animals. Included is combined interest and negotiation between farmers and the organisations for the protection of animals. Some facts of ethology need clarification soon. Especially: the social deprive of Minks; the bath taking possibility for the Mink; the requirement of space for the Mink; the collar plate on Chinchillas; the water requirement of swamp Beavers; the size group and dense occupation of Foxes. All recommendations, directions and prescriptions up to now are patchwork. In certain cases must the advisor and the farmer be in position to recognize deficiencies in care and management and be able to stop it if necessary. In this connection they must observe behaviour of tail biting, skin tearing and consumption of new born, disturbances in mating behaviour as well as in upbringing. They must also look for stereotyped movements and the expressions of pain and anxiety. The Council of Europe gave also a draft of recommendations concerning fur animals and in this paper is also attached the importance to farmers diagnosis of disturbed behaviour.

Abstract:Research on the origins and development of animal domestication is one of the most important topics in Chinese zooarchaeology. In recent years, faunal remains from a large number of sites have been subjected to zooarchaeological analysis and many new results have come from this research (Yuan Jing 2002, 2007). Here we first explain the methods used to identify domesticated animals and then present preliminary positions on the origins of six important domestic animals taxa. In conclusion, we present a model of the origins of domestication in China and discuss the different patterns of meat acquisition in the Yellow River and Yangzi River basins during the Neolithic period.

Abstract:The North American fur on Chinese road pioneer were the British,Americans were also involved in the following. American and British fur exports to China reached a peak in 1801,in contrast,in the early,the British had the advantage status,slightly after the Americans economy were. The Chinese people were wearing leather for terrestrial animals,while the North American exports to China were mainly marine animal fur. Before the completion of the industrial revolution,the international trade for resource management,but the human overkill would inevitably cause the precious animal resources were on the verge of extinction. This is a profound lesson in18 th and 19 th century at the turn of the international fur trade from prosperity to decline left.

Abstract:Excessive human population growth, uncontrolled use of natural resources, including deforestation, mining, wasteful systems, biodiversity reduction by agriculture, and damaging climate change affect the existence of all animals, including humans. This discussion is now urgent and people are rethinking their links with the animals we use for clothing, food, work, companionship, entertainment, and research. The concepts of one health, one welfare, and one biology are discussed as a background to driving global change. Nothing should be exploited without considering the ethics of the action and the consequences. This review concerns domesticated animals, including those used for human consumption of meat, eggs, and milk; horses kept for work; and dogs kept for company. Animal welfare includes health, emotional state, and comfort while moving and resting, and is affected by possibilities to show behavior and relationships with others of the same species or with humans. We show some examples of the relations between humans and domesticated animals in the environmental context, including zoonotic diseases, and consider the consequences and the new paradigms resulting from current awareness.

Current Issues in Tourism

Abstract:China is rich in wildlife resources but no comprehensive review of the research literature in relation to the nexus between wildlife and tourism interests in China has been completed. This review considers research undertaken on both consumptive and non-consumptive wildlife tourism, and shows that wildlife tourism has gained much attention in China recently. A data set was created recording attributes including authors, article titles, publication years and sources, keywords and abstracts. A more detailed analysis of the research topics, methodologies and research regions was conducted and this was accompanied by recourse to the full texts to more fully identify key findings. The research has a predominant focus on captive, semi-captive and tourism experiences in the wild, with the giant panda and bird-watching as key subjects. Research articles have been published in a range of journals but only about 32% of these are considered as key journals in China. The analysis demonstrates a rising interest in wildlife tourism. Although topics include the development of wildlife tourism, studies of visitor attitudes, analysis of visitor impacts on destinations and aspects of environmental education for tourists, this research is in its infancy and there is scope for a comprehensive and extended wildlife tourism research agenda.

Abstract:Initial animal domestication in early Neolithic China may have resembled the behavior of raising animals as pets for entertainment. During the domestication process, the ecological characteristics and living habits of each animal and the subjective demands of ancient people jointly led to the formation of animal raising behaviors for utilitarian purposes. These commensal interactions involved both the actions of ancient people and the cooperative reactions of the animals themselves. Domestication processes were gradual and involved multiple repeated and progressive co-evolutionary developments.

Abstract:Animal welfare is the state of an animal’s body and mind and the level to which its requirements are satisfied. Animal welfare is affected by human decisions and actions. Numerous decisions concerning animals are driven by human desires to enhance their own lives, and some of these decisions may be influenced by self-interest or a strong emphasis on economic factors. How to assess the welfare state of animals is a central issue in animal welfare science. Two critical questions can be used to address animal welfare: first, is the animal healthy, and second, does the animal have what it needs? Both of these questions can potentially be answered using the study of animal behavior. The development of behavioral methodologies is crucial for evaluating welfare in contexts where concern for animal welfare is often highest, such as on intensive modern farms and sites where working animals are used. Herein, we discuss animal welfare by focusing on some of its major concepts and explanations. Later, to illustrate key aspects of animal welfare, we chose to examine the information that is available for some ‘neglected’ livestock species, which are commercially important on a global basis and found in large numbers: buffaloes ( Bubalus bubalis ), camels ( Camelus dromedarius ), donkeys ( Equus asinus ), mules ( Equus asinus × Equus caballus ), and lumpfish ( Cyclopterus lumpus ). We chose these species because there are major ongoing concerns about their welfare, and more research is required to help solve the various problems. Overall, there are strong imbalances in terms of the species that are usually studied in terms of animal welfare research, and we call for greater attention to those that have traditionally been neglected.

Abstract:With increasing attention given to wild animal welfare and ethics, it has become common to depict animals in the wild as existing in a state dominated by suffering. This assumption is now taken on board by many and frames much of the current discussion; but needs a more critical assessment, both theoretically and empirically. In this paper, we challenge the primary lines of evidence employed in support of wild animal suffering, to provide an alternative picture in which wild animals may often have lives that are far more positive than is commonly assumed. Nevertheless, while it is useful to have an alternative model to challenge unexamined assumptions, our real emphasis in this paper is the need for the development of effective methods for applying animal welfare science in the wild, including new means of data collection, the ability to determine the extent and scope of welfare challenges and opportunities, and their effects on welfare. Until such methods are developed, discussions of wild animal welfare cannot go beyond trading of intuitions, which as we show here can just as easily go in either direction.

Abstract:Judging from the trend of development in animal ethics, the relationship between man and ani-mals is shifting from taking animals as resources to use to the perception of animals being capable of feeling pain and being equal to the human being. Under the pressure of growing health consciousness, animal protec-tion movements and environmental protection movements, modern animal husbandry, which aims to supply the market with large amounts of meat and pursues quantity-expansion growth, is facing serious trouble and must be thoroughly transformed. Animal husbandry should be gradually transformed from breeding animals to produce meat, leather, wool and other services to developing animal husbandry tourism. Through enabling people to experience communication with animals to obtain economic returns, a sympathetic, healthy, and ecological transformation of animal husbandry can be realized.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to highlight animal stakeholders, evidenced-based best practices, care ethics, and compassion as essential components of sustainable wildlife tourism. These tenets stem from an animal geography lens, which is well-positioned for studies of animal-based tourism and transspecies caregiving. As a conceptual contribution, this paper presents a theory synthesis that 'stays with the trouble' of wildlife tourism and identifies ways to 'bring animals in'. Our approach could be described as multispecies, critical, and socio-ecological. We argue that the trouble with wildlife tourism writ large includes nonhuman suffering and biodiversity loss, unethical and unevidenced practices, gaps in the knowledge of wildlife welfare, and limited engagement with animals as stakeholders. We then present four ways to 'bring animals in' as co-participants in wildlife tourism research and practice. This involves enfranchising animals as stakeholders in wildlife tourism, buttressed by ethics of care, best practices, and a commitment to improved outcomes along the conservation-welfare nexus. Finally, we consider the extent to which wildlife sanctuary tourism serves as a further problem or panacea that balances the conservation and welfare of wild animals. The result of our theory synthesis is the promotion of a more care-full and compassionate paradigm for wildlife tourism, which draws from diverse scholarships that contribute, conceptually and practically, to the underserved niches of wildlife welfare, rehabilitation, and sanctuary research.

Abstract:Background: There are many kinds of medicinal animal resources, which are an important part of traditional Chinese medicine resources (TCM). However, the use of medicinal animals in TCM, especially wild animals, has become a sensitive problem at home and abroad. Systematic analysis on the research status and direction of medical animals in the last 10 years which for promoting the sustainable development of Chinese medicine. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, CNKI, VIP database and WanFang Database were selected, and SPSS 25.0 software was used to analyze annual publications, journals, global distribution, authors, coauthors and co-authors rate, author institutions and high-frequency keywords. Results: Chinese Journal of modern Chinese medicine occupies the majority articles with a high co-authorship rate, but low impact factors. The development of medical animals around the world is not balanced. The top three countries are China, United Kingdom and United States. However, these countries have less exchanges and cooperation with each other. The Institute of TCM of Chinese Academy owns the most research achievements. At present, the hot spots involve the identification and quality of medical animals, applied basic research. Conclusion: The identification, quality and applied basic research of medical animals are still worthy of increasing research investment. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen exchanges and international cooperation among different countries in TCM, and promote the high-quality development in medical animals.

[Characteristic features of ecological animal husbandry]

Abstract:In recent years conventional livestock farming has been impressively successful referring to the increase in performance of farm animals and to the decrease in production costs. On the contrary, following the dictate of production-intensification, animal health and welfare as well as environmentally friendly production have been pushed into the background because of being cost- and labour-intensive. Evaluations of animal health status of farm animals indicate that a considerable number of farm animals cannot cope with the requests of increase in performance. This may be due either to physiological limits or inadequate housing and management conditions. Ecological animal husbandry as an integrative Part of organic farming is an alternative to the previous development, aiming at high quality standards concerning animal health and welfare as well as environmentally friendly production. Farmers have to follow the code of practice before being entitled to label their products as organic food and demand for premium prices. The willingness of an increasing number of consumers to pay premium prices enables the farmers to balance the economical pressure on the production costs and on the yields of the farm animals. While the code of practice limits the amount of area-born products, options are gained for the optimization of the production process for the benefit of the farm animals and the environment. The capacities of ecological animal husbandry for high process quality standards are discussed hypothetically. Due to the phenomenon of various influences and interactions there is still a lack of methodology in order to assess the process qualities and the implications of different farming strategies in a complex and objective manner, resulting in a new challenge for natural science to establish a methodology that enables a more comprehensive approach.

Abstract:Food-producing animals make up the majority of animals that humans manage globally, and China has been a major producer and exporter of animal products since the late 1990s. The opinions of the population in China regarding animal welfare are not as well understood as those in Europe. In China, animal welfare as a societal concern is still at an early stage of development. This survey of Chinese attitudes aimed to understand consumer knowledge of and behaviour towards animal welfare, and to determine whether harnessing consumer interests may be a potential future influence on the development of high-welfare agricultural production. Most participants were not aware of the meaning of animal welfare, but the number of those that were aware was higher than reported previously. The welfare of wild animals was rated particularly important compared to other animals. The links between welfare and the taste and/or safety of food were considered to be important, and Chinese consumers reported a willingness to pay more for food from animals produced in good welfare conditions, although the quality of the food was considered more important than the animal suffering. A large majority of the respondents reported that there should be legislation protecting animals and certification of welfare on farms, that animals on farms should be provided with enjoyable experiences and that transportation times should be minimised. Furthermore, most respondents reported that animals should be stunned before slaughter. We conclude that animal welfare is of importance to the Chinese consumer, in particular because of its connection to food quality.

Abstract:China plays a critical role in global biodiversity conservation, as both a biodiversity hotspot and for its role in international and domestic animal trade. Efforts to promote wildlife conservation have sparked interest in the attitudes held by Chinese citizens towards animals. Using a questionnaire, we sought to investigate the attitudes of 317 Chinese nationals across 22 provincial-level administrative units regarding their uses of animals, their perceived emotional capacities and views on exotic pets. We reduced the variables related to perceived uses of animals via Principal Component Analysis and ran Generalised Linear Models and Structural Equation Modelling to test relationships between questionnaire-derived variables. Perceptions of animals were divided into two Kellert categories - Utilitarian and Humanistic uses - and 97% of participants believed in animals' capacities to have and express emotions. We found few interactions, with exotic pets, ie playing with or taking photographs, but the acceptability of owning an exotic pet influenced the likelihood of purchasing one. A belief that animals express emotions encouraged people to look for them as pets but thinking that pets make people happy made exotic pet ownership less acceptable. The shift in attitudes to include humanistic perceptions of animals, a belief in animals as emotive beings and understanding of terminology changed from the previous utilitarian views of pre-reform China, suggesting a readiness to embrace further conservation efforts in China. This deeper understanding of Chinese attitudes toward animals and drivers of the exotic pet trade within China may enable conservation efforts to better target future campaigns.

Abstract:Scholars argue that the ubiquity of the "virtual panda"—the panda people meet in zoos and consume as souvenirs, online memes, or videos—exists in a state of hybridity between wild and domesticated. The species has garnered a significant amount of attention because of their iconic status and because of how cute they are to an adoring crowd. However, given the degree of regard tourists have for the panda, there is a dearth of research on different types of visitors to captive panda venues. In filling this gap, we investigated (1) how deeply Chinese "fans" and "non-fans" consider the welfare of captive giant pandas, and (2) if these groups differ in their assessment of whether giant pandas consent to being used as tourist attractions. In both aims, we apply a recent model on animal welfare and animal consent to giant pandas of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.
