Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of sodium glutamate on the stability of total parenteral nutrition(TPN). METHODS: Various dosages of sodium glutamate were added into different prescriptions of TPN respectively, with pH and osmotic pressure and other related indexes measured at 0, 24 and 48h. The stability of the TPN was observed as well. RESULTS: For every 5mL sodium glutamate increase, the pH value of TPN would rise by about 0.04±0.18 and the osmotic pressure would rise by about 41±12mOsm. When the osmotic pressure was <800mOms, the appearance and size of the fat emulsion particles were stable after 24 and 48h with intact surface, and no conglomeration was noted. If the osmotic pressure > 800mOms, the surface of fat emulsion particles were destructed, and paramorphia as well as conglomeration of which were noted after 24h. CONCLUSION: Sodium glutamate can be used in combination with total parenteral nutrition prescription. It is suggested that the TPN infusion be performed within 48h after combination.
