Abstract:Fossil fuels are major cause of environmental destruction in pollutions. It has created much needed momentum for renewable energies, such as hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, fuel cell (hydrogen), ocean, etc., which are envi- ronmentally benign, generated locally, and can play a significant role in developing economy. Wind power, as a fastest growing sustainable energy source, can grow at a rapid pace to meet increasing demands for electricity in a cost- effective way. The historical evolution, the state of the art and developing trends and classification of the wind power technologies are presented in this paper. Power electronics playing an important role in the utilization of wind energies are also introduced.
