Abstract:Relatively few studies have compared invasibility and species invasiveness among microhabitats within communities, synchronously We surveyed the abundance and performance of non-native Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb. (alligator weed), its co-occurring native congener, Alternanthera sessilis (L.) DC. (sessile joyweed), and other species in a wetland community along a riparian zone in southeast China to test the hypotheses that: i) degree of invasion differs between different types of microhabitats within the community; and ii) microhabitat types that differ in invasibility also differ in soil resource availability or in sediment characteristics likely to affect resource availability; iii) phenotypic plasticity of A. philoxeroides may play a key role in its adaptation to diverse habitats as can be concluded from its extremely low genetic diversity in China. The study riparian zone comprises different types of microhabitats including wet abandoned field, swamp, marsh dunes and gravel dunes. Consistent with these hypotheses, cover of A. philoxeroides was high in abandoned fields (73 +/- 2.9%) and swamps (94 +/- 1.3%), which had high soil nutrients and water availability. On the contrary, cover of native A. sessilis was relatively high in marsh dunes and grave dunes, which had coarse gravel surfaces, low soil nutrients and low water availability. A. philoxeroides showed greater morphological plasticity in response to habitat variation. In abiotically harsh habitats, stems had limited growth, and were prostrate with weak adventitious roots at nodes, forming thin, scattered patches. In the two richer habitats, the highly branched plants spread over the water or soil surface, supporting dense stronger leaf-bearing stems which grew vertically The growth pattern of A. sessilis among microhabitats did not exhibit significant variations. These results suggest that morphological plasticity and microhabitat types with high soil resources may facilitate invasions of A. philoxeroides. (c) 2006 Published by Elsevier Masson SAS.
Phenotypic Plasticity of Invasive Alternanthera Philoxeroides in Relation to Different Water Availability, Compared to Its Native Congener

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity and genetic differentiation are two possible mechanisms that plants use to cope with varying environments. Although alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) possesses very low genetic diversity, this alien weed has successfully invaded diverse habitats with considerably varying water availability (from swamps to dry lands) in China. In contrast, its native congener (Alternanthera sessilis) has a much narrower ecological breadth, and is usually found in moist habitats. To understand the mechanisms underlying the contrasting pattern, we performed a greenhouse experiment to compare the reaction norms of alligator weed with those of its native congener, in which water availability was manipulated. Our results revealed that the two congeners had similar direction of phenotypic plasticity. However, A. philoxeroides showed greater plasticity in amount than did A. sessilis in many traits examined during the switch from wet to drought treatment. Nearly all of the phenotypic variance in A. philoxeroides could be ascribed to plasticity, while A. sessilis had a much higher fraction of phenotypic variance that could be explained by genotypic variation. These interspecific differences in plastic responses to variable water availability partially explained the difference in spatial distribution of the two congeners. (c) 2006 Elsevier Masson SAS. Effects of submergence and eutrophication on the morphological traits and biomass allocation of the invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides

Abstract:Submergence and eutrophication are increasingly common in riparian zones as a result of climate change and artificial disturbance. This study aimed to test the effects of submergence level and eutrophication degree on a worldwide invasive riparian plant, Alternanthera philoxeroides. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in which the new ramets of A. philoxeroides were treated with three submergence levels (0, 7, and 13 cm) combined with five nutrient concentrations (1000-, 100-, 50-, 10-, and 1-fold dilution of modified Hoagland solution). The results showed that submergence severely inhibited the growth of A. philoxeroides, whereas a great increase in nutrient concentration promoted its growth. Submergence and increasing nutrients both reduced biomass allocation to the roots in A. philoxeroides, which primarily increased investment into stems upon submergence or leaves when not submerged. A. philoxeroides also showed significant phenotypic plasticity, elongating its stems by increasing internode length rather than number to cope with submergence. These results suggest that A. philoxeroides could actively adapt to submergence and mild eutrophication would not promote its growth, while extremely high nutrient concentrations in water would be beneficial for its adaptive growth. Our study contributes to understanding the causes of the invasiveness and wide distribution of A. philoxeroides in disturbed riparian zones where submergence and eutrophication often co-occur.

Abstract:The endangered medicinal herb, Changium smyrnioides can only be found in deciduous forest gaps within the middle to northern subtropical broad-leaved evergreen forest zone of China. The considerable plasticity of its shoot and root structure helps it to capture light more effectively in winter and early spring, and to adapt to the soil moisture conditions in its narrow habitat. Another medicinal plant, Anthriscus sylvestris, is of similar economic importance but commonly distributed widely. In contrast to C. smyrnioides, it has low structural plasticity. It is also specialized to adapt to the moist and sunny environment, where habitat, such as the banks of creeks and rivers, is abundant.

Abstract:To reveal the effects of flooding on the photosynthesis of riparian plant species Arundinella anomala Steud.in Three Gorges reservoir region,a flooding simulation experiment was conducted and the photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence of A.anomala were analyzed.Four flooding-depth levels and four flooding durations were set in the experiment.Four flooding-depth levels included: control,aboveground half-submerged(half of the aboveground of plant submerged in water),submerged with 0.5m water depth(top of plants 0.5m below water surface),submerged with 2m water depth(top of plants 2m below water surface).Four flooding durations included: 0 days,20 days,40 days and 60 days.The net photosynthetic rate(Pn),total chlorophyll content,maximal photochemical efficiency of PSⅡ,electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield,photosynthetic chlorophyll utilization efficiency and carboxylation efficiency of A.anomala plants were determined after 0 days,20 days,40 days and 60 days inundation treatments,respectively.It was shown that flooding did not have significant effects on photosynthetic characteristics of A.anomala subjected to inundation less than 60 days.After 20d and 40d inundation,Pn of plants subjected to treatments of three inundation depths did not decrease significantly as compared with Pn of control plants.The aboveground half-submerged plants after 20d inundation contrarily had 16.1% higher Pn than control plants.After 60d inundation,Pn of plants submerged with 0.5m water depth and plants submerged with 2m water depth decreased to 7.51μmol·m~(-2)·s~(-1) and 9.15μmol·m~(-2)·s~(-1),which was significantly lower than the Pn of control and aboveground half-submerged plants.In the experiment,it was found that inundation of 20d and 40d did not affect electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency.After inundation of 60d,the electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield,photosynthetic chlorophyll utilization efficiency and carboxylation efficiency of aboveground halfsubmerged A.anomala plants did not decrease as compared with control plants, but the electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield,photosynthetic chlorophyll utilization efficiency and carboxylation efficiency of plants submerged with 0.5m and 2m water depth decreased.During the whole experimental period,the net photosynthetic rate,electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield and carboxylation efficiency of half-submerged A.anomala plants were not affected by inundation.Although the net photosynthetic rate,the electron transport rate,apparent quantum yield,photosynthetic chlorophyll utilization efficiency and carboxylation efficiency of plants submerged with(0.5m) and 2m water depth experienced inundation of 60d decrease,but they are still not lower than those of some plant species which do not experience inundation.Our work shows that as regards photosynthesis,A.anomala has high tolerance to inundation,it is a promising species for revegetation of riparian area in Three Gorge reservoir region.
Phenotypic plasticity in resource allocation to sexual trait of alligatorweed in wetland and terrestrial habitats

Abstract:Environmental heterogeneity in resource availability affects invasive plant reproductive strategies and resource allocation to reproduction. Here, we conducted two field surveys to examine the effect of wetland and terrestrial habitats on inflorescence production and resource allocation to inflorescence of the amphibious invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides in its invasive range (China). We also specifically examined the effects of water availability, fertilizer application, and plant density (space) in a greenhouse experiment. In field surveys, inflorescence biomass, normal monoclinous flowers and ratio of inflorescences to shoots of plants from wetlands were about 2.4-, 0.8- and 1.3-fold higher than those from terrestrial habitats, respectively. In greenhouse experiment, plants with higher fertilizer application and lower competition conditions produced more inflorescences, and had a lower ratio of roots to shoots and a comparable ratio of inflorescences to shoot and root. Furthermore, water availability had a significant interactive effect when combined with fertilizer level or plant density on inflorescence production and resource allocation. Together, our results indicate that high resources, such as those found in wetland habitats, favor both vegetative growth and sexual trait in A. philoxeroides. However, in terrestrial habitats where resources are relatively poor, the invader can adapt to the environment by allocating more resources to vegetative growth for clonal reproduction and less resources for sexual trait. This phenotypic plasticity in resource allocation likely facilitates the plant to invade heterogeneous wetlands and terrestrial environments.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity is the property that a given genotype can produce different phenotypes in response to various environmental conditions,and a trait that has a certain genetic basis and can evolve independently.Allometry is used to study and measure the relative growth of one part of an organism,in comparison with the other parts of the organism.The allometry of a plant individual can be seen as a fixed trait determined by the inheritance of species,and plants evolve towards optimal allometric trajectory.The phenotypic variations of a specific genotype under different environmental conditions such as biomass allocation and community geometry difference may result from allometric growth and phenotypic plasticity as well.The allometry of a plant can be seen as 'apparent plasticity',whereas the real plasticity is the change of the allometric trajectory.Both phenotypic plasticity and allometry are the important traits for the invasiveness of plants.The species with higher phenotypic plasticity would adapt to more heterogeneous habitats,and phenotypic plasticity would become a better trait for the survival and spread in heterogeneous environment.The plant invasiveness can be influenced by both the allometry of plant and the change of allometric trajectory.
Phenotypic Plasticity Drives the Successful Expansion of the Invasive Plant Pedicularis kansuensis in Bayanbulak, China

Abstract:To better understand the phenotypic plasticity of the highly invasive native weed, Pedicularis kansuensis, we investigated and compared phenotypes (morphology, biomass, and nutrient composition) at different levels of invasion (low: 0 < cover ≤ 30%; medium: 30% 70%). With the increase in invasion level, the plasticity of inflorescence length, single-leaf thickness, and specific leaf area increased, while the plasticity of single-leaf area and crown width decreased. During the invasion process, we observed significant density-dependent effects, including changed morphological characteristics, increased total aboveground biomass, and decreased plant height, inflorescence length, root length, crown width, single-leaf area, structure biomass of structures (root, stem, inflorescence), and individual biomass (p < 0.05). During the reproductive period of P. kansuensis, the resource allocation (C, N, and P content, total biomass, biomass allocation) to inflorescence was significantly higher than to root and stem, while the elemental ratios (C:N, C:P, N:P) of inflorescences were significantly lower than those of roots and stems (p < 0.05). When the invasion level increased, the ratio of inflorescence C:N and biomass allocation to roots increased significantly; conversely, inflorescence N and biomass allocation to inflorescences and stems decreased significantly (p < 0.05). This led to a decrease in resource allocation to aboveground parts and more resources allocated to the roots, significantly increasing the root-to-shoot ratio (p < 0.05). Based on the phenotypic differences among different invasion levels, we suggest that P. kansuensis adapted to a competitive environment by regulating morphology, biomass, and nutrient allocation, thereby enhancing the potential of invasion and spread.

Abstract:Both phenotypic plasticity and locally adapted ecotypes may contribute to the success of invasive species in a wide range of habitats. Here, we conducted common garden experiments and molecular marker analysis to test the two alternative hypotheses in invasive alligator weed ( Alternanthera philoxeroides ), which colonizes both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Ninety individuals from three pairs of aquatic versus terrestrial populations across southern China were analyzed, using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker, to examine population differentiation in neutral loci. Two common gardens simulating aquatic and terrestrial habitats were set up to examine population differentiation in quantitative traits. We found no evidence of population differentiation in both neutral loci and quantitative traits. Most individuals shared the same ISSR genotype. Meanwhile, plants from different habitats showed similar reaction norms across the two common gardens. In particular, plants allocated much more biomass to the belowground roots in the terrestrial environment, where alligator weed may lose part or all of the aboveground shoots because of periodical or accidental disturbances, than those in the aquatic environment. The combined evidence from molecular marker analysis and common garden experiments support the plasticity hypothesis rather than the ecotype hypothesis in explaining the adaptation of alligator weed in a wide range of habitats.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity has been proposed as an important adaptive strategy for clonal plants in heterogeneous habitats. Increased phenotypic plasticity can be especially beneficial for invasive clonal plants, allowing them to colonize new environments even when genetic diversity is low. However, the relative importance of genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity for invasion success remains largely unknown. Here, we performed molecular marker analyses and a common garden experiment to investigate the genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity of the globally important weed Alternanthera philoxeroides in response to different water availability (terrestrial vs. aquatic habitats). This species relies predominantly on clonal propagation in introduced ranges. We therefore expected genetic diversity to be restricted in the two sampled introduced ranges (the USA and China) when compared to the native range (Argentina), but that phenotypic plasticity may allow the species' full niche range to nonetheless be exploited. We found clones from China had very low genetic diversity in terms of both marker diversity and quantitative variation when compared with those from the USA and Argentina, probably reflecting different introduction histories. In contrast, similar patterns of phenotypic plasticity were found for clones from all three regions. Furthermore, despite the different levels of genetic diversity, bioclimatic modeling suggested that the full potential bioclimatic distribution had been invaded in both China and USA. Phenotypic plasticity, not genetic diversity, was therefore critical in allowing A. philoxeroides to invade diverse habitats across broad geographic areas.
Latitudinal trends in the structure, similarity and beta diversity of plant communities invaded by Alternanthera philoxeroides in heterogeneous habitats

Abstract:Variations in latitudinal gradients could lead to changes in the performance and ecological effects of invasive plants and thus may affect the species composition, distribution and interspecific substitution of native plant communities. However, variations in structure, similarity and beta (β) diversity within invaded communities across latitudinal gradients in heterogeneous habitats remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a two-year field survey along 21°N to 37°N in China, to examine the differential effects of the amphibious invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides on native plant communities in terrestrial and aquatic habitats. We compared the differences in the invasion importance value ( IV ), species distribution, community similarity (Jaccard index and Sorenson index) and β diversity (Bray−Curtis index and β sim index) between terrestrial and aquatic communities invaded by A . philoxeroides , as well as analyzed their latitudinal trends. We found that the IV of A . philoxeroides and β diversity in aquatic habitats were all significantly higher than that of terrestrial, while the terrestrial habitat had a higher community similarity values. The aquatic A . philoxeroides IV increased with increasing latitude, while the terrestrial IV had no significant latitudinal trend. With increasing latitude, the component proportion of cold- and drought-tolerant species in the terrestrial communities increased, and the dominant accompanying species in the aquatic communities gradually changed from hygrophytes and floating plants to emerged and submerged plants. In addition, the aquatic communities had lower community similarity values and higher β diversity in higher latitudinal regions, while terrestrial communities had the opposite parameters in these regions. Our study indicates that the bioresistance capacities of the native communities to invasive A . philoxeroides in heterogeneous habitats are different; A . philoxeroides invasion leads to higher community homogenization in terrestrial habitats than in aquatic habitats, and terrestrial communities experience more severe homogenization in higher latitudinal regions. These findings are crucial for predicting the dynamics of invasive plant communities under rapid global change.

Abstract:Plant invasions are a global problem that requires studying plants and their environmental associations across native and introduced ranges. We surveyed 150 populations of Japanese knotweed, a key invader of the temperate zone, along 2000 km transects in native China and the introduced ranges of Europe and North America. We found that larger plants and denser populations in the introduced ranges were associated with shifts in leaf economy and chemical defenses. Introduced knotweed populations had higher SLA but reduced leaf chlorophyll, lignin, C:N and leaf toughness along with altered leaf tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids. We found three distinct multivariate knotweed phenotypes primarily in the introduced ranges, and two phenotype clusters mainly in native populations. Decreased herbivore and pathogen impacts in invasive populations and changes in environmental associations indicate that enemy release and novel habitat conditions might have driven the emergence of novel ecological strategies in this global plant invader.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity is crucial for plants to survive in changing environments. Discovering microRNAs, identifying their targets and further inferring microRNA functions in mediating plastic developmental responses to environmental changes have been a critical strategy for understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity. In this study, the dynamic expression patterns of microRNAs under contrasting hydrological habitats in the amphibious species Alternanthera philoxeroides were identified by time course expression profiling using high-throughput sequencing technology. A total of 128 known and 18 novel microRNAs were found to be differentially expressed under contrasting hydrological habitats. The microRNA:mRNA pairs potentially associated with plastic internode elongation were identified by integrative analysis of microRNA and mRNA expression profiles, and were validated by qRT-PCR and 5' RLM-RACE. The results showed that both the universal microRNAs conserved across different plants and the unique microRNAs novelly identified in A. philoxeroides were involved in the responses to varied water regimes. The results also showed that most of the differentially expressed microRNAs were transiently up-/down-regulated at certain time points during the treatments. The fine-scale temporal changes in microRNA expression highlighted the importance of time-series sampling in identifying stress-responsive microRNAs and analyzing their role in stress response/tolerance.

Abstract:Patterns of flowering phenology can affect the success of plant invasions, especially when introduced species spread across a wide range of latitude into different climatic conditions. We combined a 4‐year field survey and a 3‐year common garden experiment with the invasive grass Spartina alterniflora that is now widespread along the coast of China to document the latitudinal pattern of flowering phenology, determine if phenology was related to climate or oceanographic variables, and determine whether phenology patterns were fixed versus plastic. In the field, first flowering day displayed a hump‐shaped relationship with latitude, with low‐ and high‐latitude plants flowering 100 days and 10 days earlier than plants at middle latitudes, respectively. Peak flowering day showed a similar hump‐shaped relationship with latitude, with the interval between first and peak flowering day decreasing with increasing latitude. First flowering day had a hump‐shaped relationship with annual growing‐degree days but a linear positive relationship with tidal range. In the common garden, first flowering day decreased linearly with increasing latitude of origin, as did peak flowering day, and the interval between first and peak flowering day increased with increasing latitude. First flowering day in the common garden had weak or no relationships with abiotic variables at the sites of origin. In both the field and common garden, first flowering day was later in site‐years for which plants were taller. These results indicate a high degree of plasticity in flowering phenology, with plants flowering later in the field at sites with intermediate temperatures and high tide ranges. Common garden results indicate some selection for earlier flowering at sites with low temperatures, consistent with a shorter growing season. Consistent with life‐history theory, plants flowered later under conditions favoring vigorous growth. Earlier flowering and smaller size of plants at high and low latitudes suggests that S. alterniflora has already occupied much of the geographic range favorable for it on the East Coast of Asia.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity and rapid evolution are two important strategies by which invasive species adapt to a wide range of environments and consequently are closely associated with plant invasion. To test their importance in invasion success of Crofton weed, we examined the phenotypic response and genetic variation of the weed by conducting a field investigation, common garden experiments, and intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) marker analysis on 16 populations in China. Molecular markers revealed low genetic variation among and within the sampled populations. There were significant differences in leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), and seed number (SN) among field populations, and plasticity index (PIv) for LA, SLA, and SN were 0.62, 0.46 and 0.85, respectively. Regression analyses revealed a significant quadratic effect of latitude of population origin on LA, SLA, and SN based on field data but not on traits in the common garden experiments (greenhouse and open air). Plants from different populations showed similar reaction norms across the two common gardens for functional traits. LA, SLA, aboveground biomass, plant height at harvest, first flowering day, and life span were higher in the greenhouse than in the open-air garden, whereas SN was lower. Growth conditions (greenhouse vs. open air) and the interactions between growth condition and population origin significantly affect plant traits. The combined evidence suggests high phenotypic plasticity but low genetically based variation for functional traits of Crofton weed in the invaded range. Therefore, we suggest that phenotypic plasticity is the primary strategy for Crofton weed as an aggressive invader that can adapt to diverse environments in China.
Morphological Plasticity of Primula Nutans to Hummock-and-hollow Microsites in an Alpine Wetland

Abstract:Hummock-and-hollow microtopography is common in wetlands of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The physical environment of hummocks contrasts strongly with that of hollows. To address how Primula nutans Georgi, a herbaceous species broadly distributed on the plateau, can inhabit both hummocks and hollows, we investigated the plasticity of its morphology and biomass growth in relation to the environmental variables during the growing season. The results are as follows: (1) total daily photosynthetic photon flux density, maximum soil temperature, and diurnal soil temperature range were significantly larger on the hummocks than in the hollows; (2) individual ramets had smaller leaves, higher leaf mass per unit area, and shorter petiole and peduncle length on the hummocks, but leaf and root dry weights per ramet differed little between microsites; (3) P. nutans allocated most of its dry mass to peduncles and flowers and the proportion of reproductive mass was significantly higher for plants in the hollows than on the hummocks; (4) the coefficients of variation of most morphological and biometric parameters was higher on hummocks than in hollows. The results suggest that P. nutans favors hummocks but can tolerate hollows through morphological adjustments in that the mass investment to peduncles and flowers is much larger in plants in the hollows than hummocks.
The invasive Alternanthera philoxeroides modifies the sediment microbiome in urban and periurban river wetlands

Abstract:Few studies have evaluated the invasive effects on soil properties in urban ecosystems. In this study, population density and impervious surface area were used to divide the two river wetlands of Qingdao City, China— River Zhangcun and River Wenquan—into urban and periurban types. Sediments were sampled from plots colonized by the invasive Alternanthera philoxeroides and the native Typha angustifolia in these two river wetlands. The sediment properties, including fertility, stoichiometry, microbial diversity indices (observed species, Chao1, Shannon's diversity index and Simpson's diversity index) and species composition, were evaluated and compared. We found similar fertility and stoichiometry between sediments derived from invasive and native species. A greater bacterial diversity was found in the sediment derived from A. philoxeroides in the periurban river, while a greater fungal diversity was merely shown for the Shannon's diversity index of A. philoxeroides regardless of river types. In addition, more microbes relevant to nutrient cycling processes, such as denitrification, accumulated in response to invasion, which may have decreased the habitat quality and impeded the invasion of T. angustifolia into A. philoxeroides populations. The discrepancy in urbanization status affected the impact of plant colonization on sediment properties, and the opposite results were shown for the comparisons of sediment nitrogen availability and bacterial diversity between the two species. Urbanization discriminated the impact of invasion to some degree. The invasion of A. philoxeroides altered the sediment microbiome, and the potential plant‒soil feedback needs further investigation.

Abstract:Natural disturbances and human activities frequently fragment aquatic plants. Vegetative fragments of invasive clonal plants have a high capacity for colonization and regrowth, which results in rapid spreading of these plants. A case study was conducted to explore the effects of the water level and light on the colonization and regrowth of a clonal invasive plant – Alternanthera philoxeroides . In the study, the growth of 10-cm-long fragments of A. philoxeroides was followed in three water levels (0, 2, and 10 cm) and two light conditions (10% and 80% of natural light). Results showed that total biomass of A. philoxeroides under all treatments except 10% of natural light and 10 cm of water level was higher than the initial biomass, which suggested that fragments of A. philoxeroides can regrow under most conditions. However, treatments of high water levels and low light inhibited regrowth, clonal expansion, and vegetative propagation of clonal fragments by reducing their total biomass, number of nodes and storage root biomass. Creating habitats of high water levels and low light, for example, by planting native emergent aquatic plants, can hamper the spread of this clonal invader. Our study contributes a new perspective to controlling the spread of invasive clonal plants by creating habitats that inhibit the colonization of invasive plant propagules.

Abstract:Plant invasion succeeds because of such invader characteristics as fecundity and high-efficiency multiple reproduction modes. The acquisition of individual resources and the benefits of individual fitness are driven by optimum patterns of life history and trade-offs of reproductive allocation (RA) in plants, and variations in RA strategy play an key role in plant adaptation to environmental changes. Thus determining the RA strategy of invasive plants is important for understanding the successful mechanism underlying plant invasion. This study aims to determine the reproductive allocation (RA) strategy of two herbaceous invasive plants (Conyza canadensis and Solidago canadensis) across different cover classes in eastern China. Plant height, maximum branch length, the reproductive branch number, aboveground biomass, the amount of reproductive investment, and the coefficient of RA of the two plants decreased with increasing cover class (although the changes were not pronounced). Thus the two plants may decrease physiological investment on reproductive behavior and reduce RA under competitive conditions because of interspecies competition that progressively decreased and intraspecific competition that gradually increased with increasing cover class. The RA of the two plants may be principally influenced by plant community composition at low cover classes, but by soil pH at high cover classes. This may be the outcome that soil pH of the two plants decreased with increasing cover class significantly. Thus, intraspecific competition for resources may play an important role in the RA strategy of the two plants under high cover class.
