Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new approach of extracting texture features for texture image retrieval. A set of rotated wavelet filters (RCWF) is used jointly with dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) for texture analysis in twelve different directions. Wavelet signatures are generated from the decomposition coefficients. Graph-based spectral clustering method is applied on the distance of the signatures. Because the wavelet signature represents the image texture well and the spectral based method exploits the local relationship significantly, experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other existing methods remarkably.
Spline Wavelets Based Texture Features For Image Retrieval

Abstract:An effective texture feature is very important for accurate image retrieval with less computational complexity. The spline wavelets based texture features, mean and standard deviation of the magnitudes of the subband coefficients in the wavelet frame decomposition, are proposed for image retrieval. The experiments are performed on a database of 1792 texture images to check the retrieval performance. We also perform feature selection and further compare the performances of several wavelets based features. The detailed comparison results indicate that the new method is superior to the existing methods.

Abstract:As an important feature, texture plays a critical role in image retrieval. A clustering method is proposed based on image texture. Rotated complex wavelet (RCW) and dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) are used to decompose image into high frequency coefficients in twelve directions. The histogram signatures can be computed from each high frequency sub-band. Combined with other features, those signatures are employed to compute the similarity between data points for the improved spectral clustering to reduce dimensionality. In the final step, k-means is applied on the dimensionality-reduced data to get the clustering result. The proposed histogram signature for RCW and DT-CWT decomposition can capture the high frequency information in each direction effectively. In addition, an adaptive approach is proposed to compute the similarity between data points in spectral clustering. The experimental results show the proposed method outperforms the traditional methods remarkably.

Abstract:For dealing with the limitation that the acquired image cannot exhibit the whole character of texture object, a novel image fusing algorithm was proposed. This algorithm was based on the property that a great deal of texture information lying in the high frequency sub-band. Two images with redundancy were decomposed by wavelet transform, and the low frequency sub-band was fused by mean operator. After the local edge information in high frequency sub-band was extracted as fusion rule by Gauss-Laplacian operator, the high frequency sub-band was fused according to the similarity between two images with redundancy. Results show that this fusing algorithm can yield much richer texture information and clear images by fusing many images with redundancy, and provide exact foundation for checking defects.

Abstract:An image retrieval method using watermarking is proposed in this paper This method consists of three parts: computing texture features (CTF), embedding these texture features in the images (ETI) and improved image retrieval method (IIR). We choose three texture features in CTF They are texture browsing descriptor, HTD (homogeneous texture descriptor) and Edge histogram descriptor. Then these features are invisibly embedded into images. We embed watermark in DCT domain using dither modulation algorithm in ETI. Then we use IIR to retrieval images. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:A dual tree rotated complex wavelet (DT-RCW) transform was applied on images to solve the clustering problem in image retrieval. Kullback-Leibler distances were computed with the generalized Gaussian density model of each high-frequency band. A local binary pattern was employed on each image and the log-likelihood distances were computed. The two distances were combined with the pre-computed weight to produce new distance,on which an adjacent matrix was built. Then spectral clustering was performed with the generated adjacent matrix. Because the local binary pattern can be considered as the complementary feature of rotated complex wavelet,the experimental results show that combining the rotated complex wavelet and the local binary pattern can effectively improve the clustering performance.

Abstract:An improved image texture clustering method was proposed to solve the clustering problem in image retrieval.In feature extraction stage,dual-tree complex wavelet transform(DT-CWT)is applied to decompose image into tens of sub-bands.For those high frequency sub-bands,histogram signatures are generated as one of the texture features.In clustering stage,the distances between the data points are computed adaptively according to the data distribution density.Locality preserving projection is then employed on the distances to reduce the dimensionality of the data space.k-means is used to cluster the data in the lower dimensionality space.Histogram signature can represent image texture well in multiple directions of the DT-CWT decomposition.Moreover,the distance matrix built on data density can detect dataset locality effectively in combination with locality preserving projection.The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the traditional methods.

Abstract:The car plate recognition system is an indispensable part of intelligent traffic system. In car plate recognition system, one of the most difficult problems is the feature and recognition of car plate Chinese character. The multiresolution property of wavelet is applied to extract car plate Chinese character feature extraction, and a method that directly extracts feature from gray scale image is proposed. The method firstly extracts two kinds of features: one is wavelet moments in different multiresolution, and the other is the zoning density of wavelet-decomposed image. Then, two kinds of features are combined and a feature selection algorithm based recognition rate is presented to choose better features. Finally, the selected features are as the input of BP neural network, which is adopted to recognize car plate Chinese character. As a result, the proposed method avoids the binary operation used in some traditional Chinese character feature extractions that will seriously destroy the Chinese character structure. Furthermore, the extracted features can describe the local and global property of the character. Compared with some other feature extraction methods, the proposed method can achieve better recognition performance.

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of boundary locations and region homogeneity as well as to reduce the error rate in texture image segmentation, a novel approach based on wavelet-transform and using feature weighting is proposed in this paper. This new technique contains three consecutive stages: feature extraction, pre-segmentation and post-segmentation. In the feature extraction stage, texture features are extracted by using the pyramid-structured wavelet transform. The original image is then segmented initially using the means clustering algorithm in the pre-segmentation stage. According to the pre-segmentation results, the extracted features are weighted and the pre-segmented image is further processed with a minimum distance classifier in the post-segmentation stage to finally get the segmented image. All technical points are clearly described and presented in detail. Some segmentation experiments with different Brodatz's texture images are performed to test the performance of the new technique and are also included. Compared with a typical traditional method, the present approach shows visible improvements both in diminishing segmentation error, and in increasing boundary precision and region harmony.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel approach to texture retrieval using independent component analysis (ICA) in wavelet domain is proposed. It is well recognized that the wavelet coefficients in different subbands are statistically correlated, resulting in the fact that the product of the marginal distributions of wavelet coefficients is not accurate enough to characterize the stochastic properties of texture images. To tackle this problem, we employ (ICA) in feature extraction to decorrelate the analysis coefficients in different subbands, followed by modeling the marginal distributions of the separated sources using generalized Gaussian density (GGD), and perform similarity measure based on the maximum likelihood criterion. It is demonstrated by simulation results on a database consisting of 1776 texture images that the proposed method improve the accuracy of texture image retrieval in terms of average retrieval rate, compared with the traditional method using GGD for feature extraction and Kullback-Leibler divergence for similarity measure.

Abstract:The extraction of terrain texture characteristics is the key step of DEM based terrain classification.A new terrain tex ture characteristics extraction method is presented based on improved dual-tree complex wavelet transform.This new method tries to introduce traditional image texture algorithms into terrain texture analysis.At first,set 1/4 as the sample period of Qshift DT-CWT,then the texture characteristics and the distance between different texture characteristics with mean and variance value of complex wavelet coefficients were calculated.In order to improve the accuracy of terrain classification,vertical characteristic information of terrain surface was introduced in dual-tree complex wavelet transform model.Meanwhile,109 test samples in hilly and gully region of Loess Plateau were selected for terrain texture recognition.Experiments show that vertical characteristic information of terrain surface could improve the recognition accuracy of DEM based terrain test areas.Also,compared with Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrices (GLCM) model and Gabor filtering with PCA,the improved dual-tree complex wavelet transform method presented in this paper could effectively identify six typical test areas with different texture patterns.The average recognition accuracy of improved dual-tree complex wavelet transform method can reach up to 60.82％ with the least time consumption of texture characteristics database construction.

Abstract:Texture classification plays an important role in image analysis. The wavelet is a very efficient multiscale analysis method that has been successfully applied to describe the texture. However, it is translation-invariant. The recent double-density discrete wavelet transform have two interesting property, low computational complexity and nearly shift invariant. In this paper, the texture feature based on the double-density discrete wavelet transform are derived from the subbands and tested in two texture databases. The experimental results suggest the potential capacity of the double-density discrete wavelet transform in texture analysis.

Abstract:Wavelet transform modulus maximum is considered as one of the most important characterizations of a signal. This paper presents a new texture descriptor based on modulus maximum of the wavelet frame representation for texture retrieval, which includes two aspects: the density of modulus maxima and the mean of magnitudes of modulus maxima. Modulus maxima are related to the sharp variations in the texture. So the former is a multiresolution measure of the coarseness of the texture. The latter reflects the distribution of energy of modulus maxima along the frequency axis over scale and orientation. To combine the two different kinds of characterizations, a new dissimilarity measure is proposed. The detailed experiments are Performed over two benchmark texture image databases to verify the effectiveness of the proposed feature and dissimilarity measure.

Abstract:Statistical modeling of wavelet subbands has frequently been used for image recognition and retrieval. However, traditional wavelets are unsuitable for use with images containing distributed discontinuities, such as edges. Shearlets are a newly developed extension of wavelets that are better suited to image characterization. Here, we propose novel texture classification and retrieval methods that model adjacent shearlet subband dependences using linear regression. For texture classification, we use two energy features to represent each shearlet subband in order to overcome the limitation that subband coefficients are complex numbers. Linear regression is used to model the features of adjacent subbands; the regression residuals are then used to define the distance from a test texture to a texture class. Texture retrieval consists of two processes: the first is based on statistics in contourlet domains, while the second is performed using a pseudo-feedback mechanism based on linear regression modeling of shearlet subband dependences. Comprehensive validation experiments performed on five large texture datasets reveal that the proposed classification and retrieval methods outperform the current state-of-the-art.

Abstract:The wavelet transform as an important multiresolution analysis tool has already been commonly applied to texture analysis and classification. Nevertheless, it ignores the structural information while capturing the spectral information of the texture image at different scales. In this paper, we propose a texture analysis and classification approach with the linear regression model based on the wavelet transform. This method is motivated by the observation that there exists a distinctive correlation between the sample images, belonging to the same kind of texture, at different frequency regions obtained by 2-D wavelet packet transform. Experimentally, it was observed that this correlation varies from texture to texture. The linear regression model is employed to analyze this correlation and extract texture features that characterize the samples. Therefore, our method considers not only the frequency regions but also the correlation between these regions. In contrast, the pyramid-structured wavelet transform (PSWT) and the tree-structured wavelet transform (TSWT) do not consider the correlation between different frequency regions. Experiments show that our method significantly improves the texture classification rate in comparison with the multiresolution methods, including PSWT, TSWT, the Gabor transform, and some recently proposed methods derived from these.

Abstract:The advent of large scale multimedia databases has led to great challenges in content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Even though CBIR is considered an emerging field of research, however it constitutes a strong background for new methodologies and systems implementations. Therefore, many research contributions are focusing on techniques enabling higher image retrieval accuracy while preserving low level of computational complexity. Image retrieval based on texture features is receiving special attention because of the omnipresence of this visual feature in most real-world images. This paper highlights the state-of-the-art and current progress relevant to texture-based image retrieval and spatial-frequency image representations. In particular, it gives an overview of statistical methodologies and techniques employed for texture feature extraction using most popular spatial-frequency image transforms, namely discrete wavelets, Gabor wavelets, dual-tree complex wavelet and contourlets. Indications are also given about used similarity measurement functions and most important achieved results.

Feature Extraction Through Contourlet Subband Clustering for Texture Classification.

Abstract:Feature extraction is an important processing procedure in texture classification. For feature extraction in the wavelet domain, the energies of subbands are usually extracted for texture classification. However, the energy of one subband is just a specific feature. In this paper, we propose an efficient feature extraction method for texture classification. In particular, feature vectors are obtained by c-means clustering on the contourlet domain as well as using two conventionally extracted features that represent the dispersion degree of contourlet subband coefficients. The c-means clustering algorithm is initialized via a nonrandom initialization scheme. By investigating these feature vectors, we employ a weighted L1-distance for comparing any two feature vectors that represent the corresponding subbands of two images and define a new distance between two images. According to the new distance, a k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) classifier is utilized to perform texture classification, and experimental results show that our proposed approach outperforms five current state-of-the-art texture classification approaches.
