Abstract:Intellectual property strategy of one country should vary with the importance of intellectual property domain and the creativity of intellectual property. According to the current creativity capacity of intellectual property in China, the whole intellectual property domain can be divided four parts: strong-important domain, weak-important domain, weak-common domain and strong-common domain. Accordingly, there are four strategy: offensive strategy, break-through strategy, defensive strategy and development strategy.

Abstract:Recently digital watermarking has emerged as a candidate solution for reusable IP core protection. The key idea of IP watermarking is try to use IP cores as cover media, and hide some digital information (watermarks) in their circuit designs, for intellectual property authentication and infringements tracing. In this paper, we present the basic research framework and survey the recent advancement on IP watermarking techniques. Several typical IP watermarking schemes are evaluated and compared. The technical difficulties are discussed, and future directions are outlined.

Abstract:The current design era of consumer electronics (CE) is reliant on global integrated circuit (IC) supply chains. To maximize design productivity and minimize design time, the use of intellectual property (IP) cores, often supplied by a third-party vendor, has become a standard practice in the industry. However, there are increasing threats to security and growing piracy issues that threaten global supply chains as system-on-chip (SoC) design becomes increasingly commoditized. As a consequence, the requirements for protecting IP-core designs and the know-how they represent have become of importance to industry. This article provides an insight into this task faced by many CE manufacturers and an overview of current and past methodologies. The pros and cons of each approach and some practical case studies will help the reader understand this challenge. Some consideration is also given to the potential future evolution of IP protection.

Abstract:In this paper, a method of system on chip (SOC) design based on IP cores for digital protective relay is presented. Compared with a microprocessor, SOC provides many benefits: reduced product cost and reduced complexity due to the integration of the logic functions in a fewer devices, improved reliability and increased system availability, increased data processing speed, and reduced time-to-market due to the more flexible design. The major design tasks are defining and implementing each IP core. Some typical IP cores, such as data acquisition control block, data processing block, algorithm for protection block, data distribution and procedure management block are introduced in this paper. By integrating these IP cores, we have implemented a chip for power transmission line protection. The result of hardware simulation on FPGA and the experiments on apparatus, which based on SOC shows that our design is perfect. The chips for other power equipment protection can also be implemented by just changing some algorithm blocks and reconfiguring data distribution and procedure management block.

Abstract:A survey on engineering students' attitude toward intellectual property (IP) education has been conducted in several China's universities, revealing the need for more effective teaching and learning methods. To improve the students' IP awareness and the capability of innovative learning, a small module of patent and circuit design case study has been included in an engineering course, namely, radio-frequency integrated circuit (IC) design, which is offered to senior undergraduate or postgraduate students in a top engineering university in China. Along with the instruction of the RFIC design techniques, the concepts of the IP for the ICs are presented, followed by the analysis of innovative circuits to explore potential legal issues. The feedback of the students suggests that the curriculum is considerably helpful to enrich the knowledge of engineering students in both the design technique and IP awareness.

Abstract:This study reviews the current situation regarding design protection in the microelectronics industry. Over the past 10 years, the designers of integrated circuits (IC) and intellectual properties (IP) have faced increasing threats including counterfeiting, reverse‐engineering and theft. This is now a critical issue for the microelectronics industry, mainly for fabless designers and IP designers. Coupled with increasing pressure to decrease the cost and increase the performance of ICs, the design of a secure, efficient, lightweight protection scheme for design data is a serious challenge for the hardware security community. However, several published works propose different ways to protect design data including functional locking, hardware obfuscation and IC/IP identification. This study presents a survey of academic research on the protection of design data. It concludes with the need to design an efficient protection scheme based on several properties.

Abstract:As the rapid improvements of technique of semiconductor, the density of integrated circuits on a single chip continues to increase. This impacts SoC entering into the mainstream of integrated circuits design technique. Due to the hot competition between the companies, time-to-market becomes a crucial factor for products to be successful. Therefore, People are looking for new methods to carry out SoC more quickly and efficiently. The programmable logic IP cores is such a technique that enables products to be changed after fabrication. So the time for SoC design can be greatly cut down. Further more it also makes the SoC design more flexible. The technique will be elaborated in this paper comprehensively.

Abstract:A new IP protection method is described,which is a mutual authentication based on triple DES and is applicable for protection of security for SRAM FPGA bit streams.Legality of the IP core user is assured through the communication authentication between inner protection circuit outside IP core in FPGA and the external authentication device,which protects IP core information efficiently from detection and replication when it is downloaded into FPGA.The principle,architecture and implementation of the IP core protection system are demonstrated,and a simplified mutual authentication system using this new technology is designed.

Abstract:In this paper we first analyze the importance of intellectual property (IP) to the integrated circuit IP industry at the industry and firm level. Using detailed data of United States Patent & Trademark Office's (USPTO) database; we find that some countries which own advanced IC technology all have large quantity of IPs, especially invention patents. And successful IC firms in the world mostly benefit massively from IP. In the second section, we trace the history of the world IC industry IP protection, which indicates that the IP and its protection are becoming more and more crucial to the IC industry. Nevertheless, there are fewer independent IPs in China IC industry comparing with some advanced countries; with the development of China IC firms, some overseas firms begin to attack them by patent litigation. China IC industry is now confronted with a troublesome predicament and improvement of the IP is one of the most vital strategic actions for China IC industry. Based on this situation, we propose to establish "Preproduction alliance" for strengthening radical innovation and developing independent IPs of the whole country. Corresponding to different kinds of attacks from oversea firms, we expatiate on several measures to be free or infringements and countermeasures to cope with litigations, which is of great significance for IC firms.

Abstract:Intellectual Property (IP) core reuse is a trend in SOC and IC design. However, sharing IP cores in current competitive market poses significant high security risks due to soft-IPs can be easily copied or even partitioned to cover the ownership proof. In this paper, a digital copyright protection scheme for soft-IP core based on finite-state machines (FSMs) is proposed, in which the authorship of designs can be identified by embedding a digital watermark in the FSMs of the soft-IP during the IC design and detecting the watermark in the authentication process. Our experimental results have shown that the proposed scheme is efficient and robust to attacks and easy to implement without affecting the original performance of the Soft-IP.

Abstract:The intellectual property (IP) reuse-based design model is vulnerable to misappropriation and fraud. The situation requires new IP protection mechanisms to guarantee the rights for both IP producers and IP users. In this study, the authors study the constraints used in circuit partitioning and hereby introduce two fingerprinting methods by cell perturbations. They evaluate the proposed methods on ISPD98 benchmark suits by the state-of-the-art partitioner hMetis and cell manipulation. By tuning the fingerprinting strategies, the performance of fingerprinted designs is well maintained. Experimental result shows that the overhead of fingerprinting methods is trivial. The relative Hamming distance of cell fixing method is high, which indicates the method could yield distinct fingerprinting solutions. The relative Hamming distance of cell exchange method is low which is due to the low percentage of cell being fixed.

Abstract:Now the SOC technology has become a kind of mainstream technology of IC design, whose key problem is whether the reusable IP cores can be available. IP core web management system can organize and manage the data of IP cores effectively, and provide a convenient platform for users to search and choose the right IP cores. This paper concentrates on analyzing the characteristic of IP core data, building up the data frame of IP cores, and discussing the design considerations and achievement of IP core web management system in detail.

Abstract:With the development of the IC technique,SOC becomes popular as its low dispersion,low cost and high performance.The extension of media instruction on the general processor make the real-time multimedia processing algorithm based on processor possible.The reuse of multimedia processor IP core is the key and difficulty of programmable media SOC design.The paper studies the design of data paths and the communication mechanism of control information,focusing on the reuse of media processor IP core in media SOC.Finally,a multimedia SOC chip with typical multiprocessor architecture is shown developed by our R&D.

Abstract:The continuously widening design productivity gap in the past few decades gives high incentives to counterfeiting ICs. Existing intellectual property (IP) protection schemes demand high overheads, and some techniques like watermarking do not facilitate tracing of illegal users. In this letter, we propose a novel fingerprinting method based on post-processing on circuit partitions. We evaluate our method on the ISPD98 benchmark suite. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal. The fingerprinting design is distinct because the Hamming distance between fingerprinted IP designs is large enough to resist a collusion attack.
