Abstract:Series of Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 red emitting phosphor were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra showed that the phosphors could be efficiently excited by near ultraviolet to blue light from 350 to 470nm to give bright red emission. There were four emission bands peaking at 591, 615, 655, and 700nm, due to the transition of the Eu3+ (5D0→7Fj (j=0, 1,2,3,4)), respectively. After using the 3.5% Li2CO3 as the flux, the sample's emission intensity increased obviously. White LED was obtained by combining blue LED chip (InGaN-based 460nm emitting) with Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 and YAG:Ce3+. As the x has the value of 0.5, the InGaN-based Ca(La0.5Eu0.5)4Si3O13 WLED presented intense white emitting and good color rendering of over 89.

Abstract:Series of BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+,Mn2+(BAM) Blue-green emitting phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction and X-ray powder diffraction(XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of BAM.The emission spectra of the co-doped BAM samples showed intense blue(455 nm) and green(525 nm) emission peaks.The emission peaks was at 455 nm originating from the transition 5d→4f of Eu2+ ions partially replaces Ba2+ sites in BAM,while the 525 nm emission was attributed to the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+.White LED was fabricated by combining with NUV LED chip(GaN-based 380 nm emitting),with Eu2+,Mn2+-codoped BAM and a red phosphor of Ca(La0.5Eu0.5)4Si3O13.Under the forward bias current of 20 mA,white LED with characteristics of color rendering index of 88 is obtained.

Under near-ultraviolet 396 nm excitation, the optimum SCB:0.005Ce 3+ sample shows a blue-cyan emission band with a peak of 473 nm, which is competent for filling the cyan-gap. Meanwhile, the SCB:0.005Ce 3+ blue-cyan phosphor possesses a high quantum efficiency (internal quantum efficiency = 66.5%, external quantum efficiency = 38.5%) and weak chromaticity shift (ΔE s = 1.29 × 10 −2 ). We produce white LED devices based on 395 nm LED chips and RGB or blue/yellow/red phosphors strategies. By comparing the performance parameters of white LED devices with or without blue-cyan SCB:0.005Ce 3+ phosphor, it is proved that SCB phosphor can offset the cyan gap of commercial RGB phosphors and the cyan emission lack of commercial Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ phosphor. Furthermore, SCB:0.005Ce 3+ phosphor can substitute for commercial BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ phosphor in RGB or blue/yellow/red phosphors combinations. The prepared white LEDs based on SCB:0.005Ce 3+ blue-cyan phosphor, green/red or yellow/red phosphors show a lower proportion of high-energy blue light and are suitable for healthy lighting applications.

Abstract:An intense bluish-green phosphor, CaLaGa3S6O:Ce3+, Tb3+, is developed. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, the lifetime, and the concentration effect are investigated. The results show that an efficient nonradiative energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ occurs and its efficiency is about 11%. Although the efficiency is not high enough, these results demonstrate that a Tb3+ ion with low 4f-4f absorption efficiency in the near-UV [(n)-UV] region can play the role of activator in a narrow green-emitting phosphor. This is potentially useful in (n)-UV (380-420 nm) GaN-based LEDs through efficient energy feeding by allowing 4f-5d absorption of Ce3+ with high oscillator strength. Abstract:Phosphor-converted white laser diode (pc-wLD) technology requires high-color-quality white light, which involves the development of an efficient red-emitting phosphor color converter. With regard to this, we have developed a new kind of orange-yellow-emitting Lu2-xMg2Al2-yGaySi2O12:xCe(3+) (LMAGS:Ce3+) solid-solution phosphor, which shows the desired abundant red-emissive components and nanosecond-range luminescent decay. LMAGS:Ce3+ is further compounded into an all-inorganic phosphor-in-glass (PiG) composite tightly bonded to a high-thermal-conductivity sapphire plate (SP) in the form of a film. There is no obvious interfacial reaction between phosphor and glass during co-sintering, which ensures good luminescent properties are retained. A comparative study was conducted to reveal the microstructure-property relationship and the key influencing factors of luminescence saturation upon being driven by a blue laser. "One-dimensional photonic crystal film" and "phosphor wheel" designs were adopted to further enhance the luminescent performance, successfully improving the luminous flux of the generated white light to 393.8 lm @ 5 W mm(-2) under static-transmissive excitation mode and 1080 lm @ 20 W mm(-2) under rotatory-reflective excitation mode. Probing into the luminescence saturation mechanism, the effects of thermal saturation and optical saturation were demonstrated, accounting for 44.0% and 56.0% contributions, respectively. A fabricated prototype neutral/warm-white LD lighting source based on LMAGS:Ce3+ PiG film-on-SP shows high light collimation and comfortable visual perception, demonstrating the bright application potentials of the developed composite material.

Abstract:Intense blue emission from Ca(4)P(2)O(9):Ce(3+) phosphor was observed with CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.157, 0.094) and a high external quantum yield up to 64.8%. Concentration quenching effect of Ca(4)P(2)O(9):xCe(3+) indicated that the optimal Ce(3+) concentration was at x = 0.005, and the energy transfer among the nearest neighbor ions accounted for this quenching. Good thermal stability of the optimal phosphor was also shown, since 90% of the initial intensity (at 300 K) remained as the temperature increased from 300 to 400 K. Ca(4)P(2)O(9):0.005Ce(3+) can act as a promising blue-emitting phosphor for white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of blue-emitting Mg2Al4Si5O18:Ce3+ phosphors were prepared via the conventional high temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase structure, photoluminescence (PL) properties, PL thermal stability, and fluorescence decay curves of the samples were investigated for the first time. Under excitation at 365 nm, the phosphor exhibited a broad band blue emission with peak at 440 nm, which was ascribed to the 4f --> 5d transition of Ce3+, and the color coordinate was (0.1602, 0.0849). When the temperature increased to 150 °C, the luminescence intensity of the Mg2Al4Si5O18:0.06Ce3+ phosphor was 55.73% of the initial value at room temperature. The activation energy ΔE was calculated to be 0.25 eV, which proved the good thermal stability of the sample. The energy transfer critical distance between Ce3+ ions in Mg2Al4Si5O18 host were also calculated. The above results indicate that the Mg2Al4Si5O18:Ce3+ is a promising candidate as a blue-emitting near ultraviolet convertible phosphor for application in white light emitting diodes (WLEDs).

Abstract:Phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs), with high luminous efficiency, low energy consumption, extended lifetime, and eco-friendly nature, have revolutionized various industries. Among them, an alkaline earth silicate-based phosphor host, Na4CaSi3O9, shows good crystal structure stability and flexible properties for diverse application. Here, Ce3+/Li+ singly doped and Ce3+/Li+/Tb3+ co-doped Na4CaSi3O9 phosphors are fabricated by the standard solid-state reaction approach. The Ce3+/Li+-activated phosphors show strong absorption within 200-400 nm and exhibit a blue emission centered at 423 nm. The quenching concentration of Ce3+ appears at x = 0.05 and can be attributed to the dipole-quadrupole interaction. When Tb3+ ions are co-doped, the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphor emission can be adjusted from blue to green under the irradiation of 365 nm through the dipole-dipole interaction induced energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions with a maximum value of 28.32%. This study highlights the Na4CaSi3O9:Ce3+,Li+,Tb3+ phosphors as a new and efficient material for w-LED applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:CaGdGaAl2O7 and CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) have been synthesized by a traditional solid state reaction for the first time. The Rietveld refinement confirmed that CaGdGaAl2O7 has a tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4[combining macron]21m. The photoluminescence properties show that the obtained phosphors can be efficiently excited in the range from 330 to 400 nm, which matches perfectly with commercial UV LED chips. A tunable blue-green emitting CaGdGaAl2O7:Ce(3+),Tb(3+) phosphor has been obtained, by codoping Ce(3+) and Tb(3+) ions into the host and varying their relative ratios, and may be a good candidate for blue-green components in UV white LEDs. The luminescence properties and lifetimes reveal an efficient energy transfer from the Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) ions. The energy transfer is demonstrated to be a dipole-quadrupole mechanism, and the critical distance for Ce(3+) to Tb(3+) calculated by the concentration quenching is 12.25 Å.
A broadband yellow-green emitting mixed orthoborate–pyroborate phosphor, Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Ce 3+ , for white light emitting diodes

Abstract:The development of yellow-green phosphors for high quality white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) is critical. Herein, we successfully synthesized a mixed orthoborate–pyroborate phosphor, Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Ce 3+ , using a high-temperature solid-state method, which exhibits bright yellow-green emission with a peak located at 540 nm and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 130 nm under 410 nm light excitation. In addition, the crystal structure, morphology, and thermal quenching properties of Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Ce 3+ were investigated in detail. The quantum yield of the optimal sample was found to be 53.3%. The concentration quenching occurred through the energy transition between the nearest-neighbor Ce 3+ ions. A WLED with a low correlated color temperature (CCT = 3906 K) and a high color rendering index ( R a = 89) was prepared by coating the mixture of the phosphor Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Ce 3+ , the commercial blue phosphor BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ and the red phosphor CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ on a 395 nm n-UV LED chip. The results show that the yellow-green phosphor Ba 2 Sc 2 B 4 O 11 :Ce 3+ could be an excellent candidate for WLEDs.

Abstract:In this paper, a new garnet-based Ce3+-activated Ca2LaHf2Al3O12 (CLHAO) green phosphor with broadband emissions covering the cyan and green regions was successfully designed. The crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics of the as-prepared sample were investigated in detail. Under the excitation of 408 nm, the optimal CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors exhibited a broad emission band in the range of 450–700 nm with a peak at 515 nm. Impressively, the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of this sample was determined to be about 116 nm, which was much broader than that of commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphors (FWHM = 67 nm). The internal quantum efficiency of CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors was measured to be 46.5%. Finally, by using a 400 nm LED chip and the commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ red phosphors, the as-prepared CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors, as well as the BAM:Eu2+ blue phosphors, a package of white light-emitting diode (LED) device was fabricated. Interestingly, under 60 mA current, the white LED device displayed a smooth emission spectrum, without a spectrum cavity in cyan region. And thus the resulting warm white light possessed a high CRI value (Ra) of 92.0, which was greatly better than that of another white LED device fabricated by using commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphors as color converter (Ra = 80.6). We anticipate that the work presented here may open up new insights for finding high-performance color-converting phosphors for high-CRI solid-state lighting devices.

Abstract:Luminescent properties of Ce3+-Na+-Pb2+ codoped SrGa2S4 phosphor are investigated in this paper. We show that white light is generated when the (446 and 486 nm) blue bands of Ce3+ combine with the (592 nm) broad orange bands of Pb2+ via exciting SrGa2S4:Ce,Na,Pb by 360 nm irradiation. White light with varied hue, color temperature, and color rendering index can be easily tailored through varying Ce/Pb concentration ratio. These results indicate a promising application of SrGa2S4:Ce,Na,Pb as a single-phase white light-emitting phosphor in white light-emitting diodes. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Abstract:Cyan-emitting phosphors are key color converters for achieving a high color-rendering index (CRI) in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, cyan phosphors that have a suitable excitation wavelength and high thermal stability are still challenges. In this work, the Ba9Lu1.5Ga0.5Si6O24:Ce3+ (BLGSO:Ce3+) cyan phosphor is studied. The excitation band has a peak at 395 nm, which is close to the emission light from the near-ultraviolet (NUV) LEDs (395-405 nm). BLGSO:Ce3+ manifests an emissive peak at 488 nm and a full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of 125 nm. Its internal quantum efficiency (IQE) reaches 90.7% at room temperature. At 150°C, the cyan emission intensity decreases to 97.2% of the initial value at room temperature, indicating excellent thermal stability. Combining with CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ and the 395 nm chip, a white LED with a high CRI of 91.9 is achieved.

Abstract:The blue phosphors Na(2−x)Ca(1−x)SiO4:xCe3+ were synthesized by the sol–gel method and their luminescence characteristics were investigated for the first time. Structural information about prepared samples is obtained by analyzing the XRD patterns and SEM micrographs. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectra indicate that the Na(2−x)Ca(1−x)SiO4:xCe3+ phosphors can be effectively excited by ultraviolet (360 nm) light. The PL emission spectra exhibit tunable blue broadband emission with the dominant wavelength of 427–447 nm under excitation of 360 nm by controlling the doping concentration of Ce3+. The concentration quenching effect for Ce3+ was found at the optimum doping concentration of 4 mol%. The Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage 1931 chromaticity coordinates of Na1.96Ca0.96SiO4:0.04Ce3+ are (0.1447, 0.0787), which are better color purity compared to the commercial Eu2+-doped BaMgAl10O17 phosphor. Na1.96Ca0.96SiO4:0.04Ce3+ composition shows intense blue emission (peak wavelength, 439 nm) with relative intensity versus commercial BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ blue phosphor (Nichia) 65 and 158 % under 254 and 365 nm excitation, respectively. All the results indicate that Na(2−x)Ca(1−x)SiO4:xCe3+ phosphors are potential candidate as a blue emitting phosphor for UV-converting white light-emitting diodes.
Highly bright broadband cyan-emitting CaLu2HfGaAl3O12:Ce3+ garnet phosphors for high-color-quality white light-emitting diodes

Abstract:In this work, novel highly efficient cyan-emitting Ce3+-activated CaLu2HfGaAl3O12 (abbreviated as CLHGAO) garnet-structured phosphors were synthesized using the high-temperature solid-state reaction route. Rietveld refinement results demonstrate the as-prepared samples belong to cubic space group Ia 3 ‾ d. These CLHGAO:xCe3+ (x = 0.5–8%) phosphors possessed a broad absorption band in the 320–450 nm wavelength range with a maximum at 408 nm. Upon 408 nm excitation, the CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ sample showed a broad cyan emission band within 425–750 nm wavelength range (emission peak: 493 nm; bandwidth: 95 nm), along with CIE color coordinates of (0.1939, 0.3533) and a high internal quantum efficiency of 81.9%. It is observed that, with increasing Ce3+ doping concentration from 0.5% to 8%, the emission peak position of CLHGAO:xCe3+ moves from 493 nm to 527 nm, and the corresponding emission color changes from cyan to green. Besides, the thermal stability and color stability of CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ phosphor at high temperature are also studied. A white LED device was fabricated by utilizing a 395 nm LED chip with as-prepared CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ cyan-emitting phosphor and commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green-emitting phosphor and commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ red-emitting phosphor, and it demonstrates a high-color-quality white light with high color rendering index of 91, low color correlated temperature of 3547 K and good luminous efficacy of 58.71 lmW−1.
