Identify Mechanisms for Fostering Interdisciplinary Research at Universities

Abstract:Interdisciplinary centers play an important role to the university strategic development. They are sharing university governance with traditional academic units,and even ask more autonomy,which leads to fragmented university governance. Depending on comparative studies and semistructure interviews,the authors argue that double-counting,which doubles the credit of joint appointment professor for academic departments or interdisciplinary centers performance evaluation,is a good mechanism to support interdisciplinary research (IR). And,the reform of research funding mode is fundamental to IR at China's universities.
