Abstract:Urban traffic signal control system controls the economic lifeline of cities,and its efficiency level directly affects the socio—economic development state,so it has received much concern from the whole society.Firstly,this paper briefly reviews the development course of the urban traffic signal control system,analyzes and discusses the control model and optimization algorithms and other aspects of the foreign typical traffic signal control systems such as TRANSYT,SCOOT,SCATS,and so on,and points out their features and weaknesses.Secondly,analyzing three domestic representative traffic signal control systems such as NUTCS,HiCon,and SMOOTH,this paper summarizes the domestic research achievements and current status in this filed.Finally,it puts forward the development outlook and some constructive suggestion to the traffic signal control system in public transport priority,mixed traffic,standardization and modularization,intelligent control and system integration.

Abstract:Traffic jams arise from an imbalance in the supply of and demand for road space. One can understand that reducing traffic jam means either increasing the supply of road space or reducing the demand for road loading. This work focuses on how to alleviate the demand for peak automotive travel. We propose a new control method to simulate and analyze a traffic jam zone happened in an urban traffic network by using Aimsun. Finally, we also do three scenario cases low, middle and heavy traffic flow works to compare with normal regular traffic light control rules, the diamond control strategy and our new control policy. Simulation results show that our new propose traffic control policy is the best one among the others.

Abstract:Through the investigation of the traffic control issues on the urban freeway, several traffic control modes such as on-ramp control, network routing control and speed limit control are discussed as well as corresponding control theory research methods. According to control views, these modes involve the research methods of linear planning, optimum control, dispersion control, fuzzy control and neuron network control, and so on. Some advice is presented for future study.

Abstract:Aiming at the practice of traffic signal control in China,this paper analyzes the positive and negative effect of the commonly used traffic signal control designs.While discussing the deficiencies of existing traffic regulations on the signal color,the paper focuses on the basic issues in urban traffic signal control.By analyzing the impacts of signal design (signal timing allocation,flashing green/red for motorized vehicles and flashing green for pedestrians) and other auxiliary signal devices at intersection (countdown facilities) on the intersection safety and flow efficiency,the paper makes suggestions on the designs of traffic signal timing and countdown facilities.The suggestions are also made on the current traffic safety regulations and other relevant traffic laws.Lastly,the paper discusses few basic issues on signal control from both theoretical and practical application aspects,which includes duration of green time interval,cycle length,control strategy of turning vehicles,priority for transit vehicles,adaptive signal control,arterial traffic signal coordination,and etc.

Abstract:The development process of urban traffic signal control systems is simply reviewed, and the actuals and evolvement of traffic systems such as SCOOT(UK), SCATS(Australia), UTOPIA(Italy), RHODES(USA), OPAC(USA) and PRODYN(France) are introduced. The above systems′ characteristics and shortages are analyzed. This paper points out that the keys for improving the performances of urban traffic signal control system are high quality detection data of traffic volume and traffic models.The development of urban traffic signal control system depends on integration of the advanced intelligent control technology, information fusion and processing technology and traffic management.

Abstract:Urban large-scale traffic congestion is often formed from the individual intersection's traffic jam. According to the characteristics of these intersections, this paper presents the conception of traffic bottleneck. To prevent bottleneck intersection's queuing back,this paper analysis bottleneck control strategy and its trigger conditions, and presents traffic bottleneck control strategy in single and coordination situation,then conceives single bottleneck control model and coordination bottleneck control model. At last, we prove the control effect of single bottleneck control model in practice. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:The congestion of the urban traffic is becoming one of critical issues with increasing population and automobiles in cities. Traffic jams not only cause extra delay and stress for the drivers, but also increase fuel consumption, add transportation cost, and increase carbon dioxide air pollution. The traffic controller is one of critical factors affecting the traffic flow. The conventional traffic patterns are nonlinear and complex. As a result, the fixed traffic light controller is not optimized to reduce the traffic jam. Moreover, it does not improve the response time for ambulances, fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles. This paper is written with the endeavor to provide the readers an idea of the research that has been carried out in the intelligent traffic light field and the microcontroller based traffic light control system. The historical review of the technology and the recent development of the intelligent traffic light control system are stated in this paper. In addition, the future studies of the related work are also presented.

Abstract:Traffic signal control is an important and challenging real-world problem, which aims to minimize the travel time of vehicles by coordinating their movements at the road intersections. Current traffic signal control systems in use still rely heavily on oversimplified information and rule-based methods, although we now have richer data, more computing power and advanced methods to drive the development of intelligent transportation. With the growing interest in intelligent transportation using machine learning methods like reinforcement learning, this survey covers the widely acknowledged transportation approaches and a comprehensive list of recent literature on reinforcement for traffic signal control. We hope this survey can foster interdisciplinary research on this important topic.

Abstract:Mixed traffic flows are opening up new areas for research and are seen as key drivers in the field of data and services that will make roads safer and more environmentally friendly. Understanding the effects of Connected Vehicles (CVs) and Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), as one of the vehicle components of mixed traffic flows, will make it easier to avoid traffic congestion and contribute to the creation of innovative applications and solutions. It is notable that the literature related to the analysis of the impact of mixed traffic flows on traffic signal control in urban areas rarely considers mixed traffic flow containing CVs, CAVs, and Human Driven Vehicles (HDVs). Therefore, this paper provides an overview of the relevant research papers covering the topic of urban Traffic Signal Control (TSC) and mixed traffic flows. Best practices for intersection state estimation and TSC in the case of mixed traffic flows in an urban environment are summarized and possible approaches for utilizing CVs and CAVs as mobile sensors and actuators are discussed.

Abstract:Traffic control system does not match the increasing requirements of modern urban traffic network with the limitation of traditional traffic information content and collection methods, implementation techniques and optimization models. The latest advances in intelligent transportation systems and Connected Vehicle technologies lay a solid foundation for enhancing the ability of optimization, adaptability, and quick response of traffic signal control system. This paper analyzes the impact of revolution of information, communication, and computation technologies on environment, object, and implementation methods of traffic control system. Then the next generation of traffic control system is featured by safer, faster, greener, and human friendly. The prototype of this intelligent and pro-active traffic signal control systems is designed and implemented as well. The initial test results validated that the proposed system and their supporting information and communication technologies have promising property and a broad prospect.

Abstract:Multi-dimension, stochastic, and dynamic are essential nature of urban traffic operation. Traffic reliability introduces the idea of reliability into traffic research and is an important field of cause analysis of traffic problems. Considerable researches have been conducted on traffic reliability, covering from theory to practice, and from model to algorithm. There already exists a framework for reliability analysis. However, few comprehensive review literatures can be obtained. The goal of this paper is to fill this blank from describing of development of traffic reliability research. Basic definitions, theory, and methods are depicted accompanied with the application to traffic optimization. In the last section, the future development of traffic reliability research is concerned.

Abstract:The self-adaptive traffic signal control system serves as an effective measure for relieving urban traffic congestion. The system is capable of adjusting the signal timing parameters in real time according to the seasonal changes and short-term fluctuation of traffic demand, resulting in improvement of the efficiency of traffic operation on urban road networks. The development of information technologies on computing science, autonomous driving, vehicle-to-vehicle, and mobile Internet has created a sufficient abundance of acquisition means for traffic data. Great improvements for data acquisition include the increase of available amount of holographic data, available data types, and accuracy. The article investigates the development of commonly used self-adaptive signal control systems in the world, their technical characteristics, the current research status of self-adaptive control methods, and the signal control methods for heterogeneous traffic flow composed of connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles. Finally, the article concluded that signal control based on multiagent reinforcement learning is a kind of closed-loop feedback adaptive control method, which outperforms many counterparts in terms of real-time characteristic, accuracy, and self-learning and therefore will be an important research focus of control method in future due to the property of “model-free” and “self-learning” that well accommodates the abundance of traffic information data. Besides, it will also provide an entry point and technical support for the development of Vehicle-to-X systems, Internet of vehicles, and autonomous driving industries. Therefore, the related achievements of the adaptive control system for the future traffic environment have extremely broad application prospects.

Abstract:Regarding the exclusive characteristics of mixed traffic in China, this paper offers some ideas to design scenarios for mixed urban traffic control after analyzing the characteristics of urban networks and traffic flow. Based on mix-flow theories, the paper establishes a system, namely HiCON, of urban mixed traffic control, including ramp metering, single-point control, coordinated arterial and regional control, and transit priority control. Implementations of HiCON in Beijing, Qingdao, and Fuzhou, respectively, have shown promising results: 10-20% reduction of delay, and 5-10% reduction of travel time, both for vehicles and in average.

Abstract:Efficient traffic control can alleviate traffic congestion, reduce fuel consumption, and improve traffic safety. With the development of communication and automation technologies, regular vehicles (RVs), connected vehicles (CVs), and connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) will coexist on urban roads in the near future. In this paper, we systematically review the studies on urban traffic control under the mixed traffic environment, which utilize CVs and CAVs to improve the performance of urban traffic control. We first give a glance at the evolution of urban traffic control with the deployment of CVs and CAVs to identify the important and promising research fields in the mixed traffic control. We then review the recent advances in traffic signal timing with CAV/CV trajectory data, CAV trajectory/route planning, and the cooperative control of CAV trajectories and traffic signals from the intersection level to the network level under the mixed traffic environment. Besides, we summarize two types of studies on mixed traffic control at in-tersections with CAV-dedicated facilities: 1) traffic signal timing and vehicle trajectory planning at intersections with CAV-dedicated lanes, and 2) deployment of CAV-dedicated facilities including CAV-dedicated lanes, links, and zones. Finally, the future research directions and challenges are discussed. We hope that this review could provide researchers with a helpful roadmap for future research on urban traffic control under the mixed traffic environment.

Abstract:Traffic congestion in urban road and freeway networks leads to a strong degradation of the network infrastructure and accordingly reduced throughput, which can be countered via suitable control measures and strategies. After illustrating the main reasons for infrastructure deterioration due to traffic congestion, a comprehensive overview of proposed and implemented control strategies is provided for three areas: urban road networks, freeway networks, and route guidance. Selected application results, obtained from either simulation studies or field implementations, are briefly outlined to illustrate the impact of various control actions and strategies. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of future needs in this important technical area.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of development trend of urban traffic control system,intelligent and integrated,as to the problem that the integration of various traffic signal controllers in various traffic control systems,the paper presents a practical solution about the integration of urban traffic signal controllers,with integrated urban traffic control system,discussing the system architecture and two main components:Main Control Module and Communication Protocol Conversion Module,as well as the function architecture and the technology implementaion approach of the integration of urban traffic signal controllers,including the development environment,program language,database system and so on,to achieve the compatibility of urban traffic control system to several kinds of controllers of various manufactures.The Communication Protocol Conversion Module,was developed and applied in actual system.

Abstract:Compared with ordinary plane intersection,the annular intersection has some advantages such as less conflict points,more continuous traffic flow,better safety and easier to control.So it has been implemented in many urban roads.However,with the rapid increase of urban road transport demand,the capacity of annular intersection is unable to meet the demand.This paper introduces an effective way to solve the problems based on signal control,which effectively uses the time and spatial resources of the annular intersections and maximizes the capacity.
