Abstract:Anaphora resolution has been a complicated problem in Natural Language Processing(NLP hereafter) and has attracted the attention of many researchers.The present study is carried out based on the Centering Theory(CT hereafter),which is a computational model of discourse interpretation that examines the relationship between attentional state,the form of referring expressions,and the control of inferential processes.It has served as one of the major anaphora resolution algorithms due to its simplicity and computational tractability.We generalize a tentative framework-Centering Model for Chinese(CMC) as the theoretical basis of the present study.After that,we carry out a thorough investigation into the anaphoric system in Chinese and find out that only zero anaphora and third-person pronominal anaphora can be studied from centering perspective.By the methodology of approximation,we generalize an anaphora resolution algorithm for Chinese.Finally,we build up a system architecture for automatic Chinese anaphora resolution based on CMC.
