Abstract:. We discuss possibilities of protecting quantum states against disturbances introduced by quantum measurements. We specify conditions under which it is possible to restore an unknown state of a combined quantum system after measurements which were performed on some (but not on all) of its components.

Abstract:The influence of weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal on the Rydberg atoms system is investigated, and is found to have an important practical significance as both weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal and Rydberg atoms system can be experimentally realized. The quantum coherence and the entropic uncertainty relation of the system are explored, and it is found that the quantum coherence of the system is enhanced and the values of uncertainty and the uncertainty bound are reduced under some particular weak measurements along with quantum measurement reversals. This indicates that the decoherence effect of the system can be weakened by weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal. Furthermore, the trace distance which is a reflection of the entanglement is also examined, and it is shown that weak measurement along with quantum measurement reversal can improve the entanglement of the system.

Abstract:This is a brief description of how to protect quantum states from dissipation and decoherence that arise due to uncontrolled interactions with the environment. We discuss recoherence and stabilization of quantum states based on two techniques known as "symmetrization" and "quantum error correction". We illustrate our considerations with the most popular quantum-optical model of the system-environment interaction, commonly used to describe spontaneous emission, and show the benefits of quantum error correction in this case.

Abstract:We study the confidence and backaction of state reconstruction based on a continuous weak measurement and the quantum filter equation. As a physical example we use the traditional model of a double quantum dot being continuously monitored by a quantum point contact. We examine the confidence of the estimate of a state constructed from the measurement record, and the effect of backaction of that measurement on that state. Finally, in the case of general measurements we show that using the relative entropy as a measure of confidence allows us to define the lower bound on the confidence as a type of quantum discord.
Protecting a quantum state from environmental noise by an incompatible finite-time measurement

Abstract:We show that measurements of finite duration performed on an open two-state system can protect the initial state from a phase-noisy environment, provided the measured observable does not commute with the perturbing interaction. When the measured observable commutes with the environmental interaction, the finite-duration measurement accelerates the rate of decoherence induced by the phase noise. For the description of the measurement of an observable that is incompatible with the interaction between system and environment, we have found an approximate analytical expression, valid at zero temperature and weak coupling with the measuring device. We have tested the validity of the analytical predictions against an exact numerical approach, based on the superoperator-splitting method, that confirms the protection of the initial state of the system. When the coupling between the system and the measuring apparatus increases beyond the range of validity of the analytical approximation, the initial state is still protected by the finite-time measurement, according with the exact numerical calculations.

Abstract:Due to the interaction with the environment, a quantum state is often affected by the different types of noises which becomes to one of the biggest problems for practical quantum computation. We study the possibility of protecting the mixed state of a quantum system that goes through noise by weak measurements and control operations. The aim is to find the optimal measurement strength and control operations and make the input and output states as close as possible. We show that our scheme can effectively protect arbitrary mixed states against typical types of noise sources: amplitude damping, phase damping and amplitude-phase damping. The optimal measurement and control operators are deduced in different bases of the Bloch sphere to find the best control scheme for each type of noise. The effectiveness of our control scheme is demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a quantum state recovery scheme based on environment assisted measurement with weak measurements and flip operations. Before the decoherence channel the weak measurement and flip operators are applied to gain some information about the state of the system and transfer it to a more robust state. Then we utilize environment assisted measurement and post-flip operations to bring the system as close as possible to its initial state. We illustrate our scheme and compare it with a scheme based on environment assisted measurement and weak measurement reversal in the case of a decoherence channel. We show that the success probability of our proposed scheme is significantly improved for all initial states. The proposed scheme is applicable for recovery of N-qubit state from any type of decoherence with at least one invertible Kraus operator. Also, the explicit formula of total fidelity and success probability for recovery of N-qubit GHZ state are derived.

Abstract:We demonstrate in a superconducting qubit the conditional recovery (uncollapsing) of a quantum state after a partial-collapse measurement. A weak measurement extracts information and results in a nonunitary transformation of the qubit state. However, by adding a rotation and a second partial measurement with the same strength, we erase the extracted information, canceling the effect of both measurements. The fidelity of the state recovery is measured using quantum process tomography and found to be above 70% for partial-collapse strength less than 0.6.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a feed-forward control approach to protect arbitrary two-qubit pure and mixed initial states using the weak measurement. A feed-forward operation and measurements are used before the noise channel, and afterward, a reversed operation and measurements are applied to recover the state back to its initial state. In the case of two-qubit pure states, we use the unraveling trick to describe the state of the system in each step of the control procedure. For two-qubit mixed states, a completely positive trace-preserving map is implemented. Finally, the fidelity and success probability are used to evaluate the effect of protection. The complete recovery conditions for the measurement strengths are derived, under which we achieve the optimal fidelity and the success probability of recovering the initial pure and mixed states.

Abstract:One of the crucial tasks in quantum systems is to reduce the effects of decoherence due to the unavoidable interactions between a system and its environment. Many protection schemes have been proposed recently, among them the weak measurement quantum measurement reversal (WMQMR), weak measurement-based quantum feedback control (QFBC) and quantum feed-forward control (QFFC) are reviewed in this paper. By considering weak measurement, the aim is to find a balance between information gain and disturbance of the system caused by the measurement. We classify different types of measurement and give the definition of noise sources and their effects on the state of the system. Finally, we compare and analyze the performance of the discussed protection schemes for different noise sources by numerical simulations.

Abstract:The quantum measurement problem considered for measuring system (MS) model which consist of measured state S (particle), detector D and information processing device O. For spin chains and other O models the state evolution for MS observables measurements studied. It's shown that specific O states structure forbids the measurement of MS interference terms which discriminate pure and mixed S states. It results in the reduction MS Hilbert space to O representation in which MS evolution is irreversible, which in operational formalism corresponds to S state collapse. In radiation decoherence O model Glauber restrictions on QED field observables results in analogous irreversible MS + field evolution. The results interpretation in Quantum Information framework and Rovelli Relational Quantum Mechanics discussed.

Abstract:Exposed in the nonzero temperature environment, a quantum system can both lose and gain excitations by interacting with the environment. In this work, we show how to optimally protect quantum states and quantum entanglement in such a situation based on measurement reversal from weak measurement. In particular, we present explicit formulas of protection. We find that this scheme can circumvent the entanglement sudden death in certain conditions.

Abstract:The effect of environment-assisted measurement and quantum measurement reversal on the entanglement transfer in two parallel Heisenberg spin chains is investigated. We derive the exact analytical expression of the optimal final restoration, show that the distribution entanglement could be restored to the initial value, which is independent of the size of the spin chain. Comparing with the results obtained by the method of weak measurement, our results show notable superiorities on restoration scope and success probability.

Abstract:Entanglement of a system changes due to interactions with the environment. A typical type of interaction is amplitude damping. If we add a detector to monitor the environment and only select the no-damping outcome, this amplitude damping is modified into a weak measurement. Here we show that the entanglement change of a two-qubit state due to amplitude damping or weak measurement can be probabilistically reversed. For the amplitude-damping case, the entanglement partially recovers under most conditions. For the weak-measurement case, the recovery of the initial entangled state is exact. The reversal procedure involves another weak measurement, preceded and followed by bit flips applied to both qubits. We propose a linear optics scheme for the experimental demonstration of these procedures.

Abstract:Consecutive measurements performed on the same quantum system can reveal fundamental insights into quantum theory's causal structure, and probe different aspects of the quantum measurement problem. According to the Copenhagen interpretation, measurements affect the quantum system in such a way that the quantum superposition collapses after each measurement, erasing any memory of the prior state. We show here that counter to this view, un-amplified measurements (measurements where all variables comprising a pointer are in principle controllable) have coherent ancilla density matrices that encode the memory of the entire set of (un-amplified) quantum measurements that came before, and that the chain of this entire set is therefore non-Markovian. In contrast, sequences of amplified measurements (measurements where at least one pointer variable has been lost) are equivalent to a quantum Markov chain. We argue that the non-Markovian nature of quantum measurement has empirical consequences that are incompatible with the assumption of wave function collapse, thus elevating the collapse assumption into a testable hypothesis. Finally, we find that all of the information necessary to reconstruct an arbitrary non-Markovian quantum chain of measurements is encoded on the boundary of that chain (the first and the final measurement), reminiscent of the holographic principle.

Abstract:We show that measurement can recover the quantum coherence of a qubit in a pure dephasing environment. The experimental demonstration of this in an optical system by comparing the visibilities (and fidelities) of the final states with and without measurement is provided here. This method can be extended to other two-level quantum systems and entangled states in a dephasing evolution environment. It may also be used to implement other types of quantum information processing.

Abstract:The projective measurement usually destroys the quantum correlation between two subsystems of a composite system, thereby making the measured state useless for any efficient quantum information processing and quantum computation task. The weak measurement acts gently on quantum system and do not force the system state to decohere completely, thus revealing the super quantum discord, which can take value more than that of the normal quantum discord. Remarkably, we prove that the super quantum discord in the post measured state is equal to the difference between the super quantum discord and the normal quantum discord in the original state. Thus, the weak measurement has the ability to resurrect the lost quantumness of any composite quantum state. This suggests a conservation law for the extra quantum correlation in any composite state. The amount of extra quantum correlation which is destroyed by the projective measurement in the original state is equal to the amount of extra quantum correlation captured by the weak measurement in the post-measured state.

Abstract:To prepare quantum states and extract information, it is often assumed that one can perform a perfectly projective measurement. Such measurements can achieve an uncorrelated system and environment state. However, perfectly projective measurements can be difficult or impossible to perform in practice. We investigate the limitations of repeated non-projective measurements in preparing a quantum system. For an $n$-qubit system initially entangled with its environment and subsequently prepared with measurements, using a sequence of weak measurements, we show that some entanglement remains unless one of the measurement operators becomes perfectly projective through an extreme limiting process. Removing initial (unentangled) correlations between a system and its environment and the scenario where measurement outcomes are not tracked are also discussed. We present results for $n$-qubit and $n$-dimensional input states.

Why protective measurement does not establish the reality of the quantum state

Abstract:Abstract“Protective measurement” refers to two related schemes for finding the expectation value of an observable without disturbing the state of a quantum system, given a single copy of the system that is subject to a “protecting” operation. There have been several claims that these schemes support interpreting the quantum state as an objective property of a single quantum system. Here we provide three counter-arguments, each of which we present in two versions tailored to the two different schemes. Our first argument shows that the same resources used in protective measurement can be used to reconstruct the quantum state in a different way via process tomography. Our second argument is based on exact analyses of special cases of protective measurement, and our final argument is to construct explicit “ψ$$\psi $$-epistemic” toy models for protective measurement, which strongly suggest that protective measurement does not imply the reality of the quantum state. The common theme of the three arguments is that almost all of the information comes from the “protection” operation rather than the quantum state of the system, and hence the schemes have no implications for the reality of the quantum state.
State distinguishability under weak measurement and post-selection: A unified system and device perspective

Abstract:We quantify the disturbance of a quantum state undergoing a sequence of observations, and particularly focus on a weak measurement followed by post-selection and compare these results to the projective counterpart. Taking into account the distinguishability of both, the system and the device, we obtain the exact trade-off between the system state disturbance and the change of the device pointer state. We show that for particular post-selection procedures the coupling strength between the system and the device can be significantly reduced without loosing measurement sensitivity, which is directly transferred to a reduced state disturbance of the system. We observe that a weak measurement alone does not provide this advantage but only in combination with post-selection a significant improvement in terms of increased measurement sensitivity and reduced state disturbance is found. We further show that under realistic experimental conditions this state disturbance is small, whereas the exact post-selection probability is considerably larger than the approximate value given by the overlap of the initial and final state when neglecting the system state disturbance.
