Abstract:Objective To investigate the EMG activity character of masticatory muscles in patients with different types of tooth wear. Methods Thirty-one patients with severe tooth wear were selected and divided into two groups: groupⅠwith complete posterior tooth support and group Ⅱwithout complete posterior support. The surface electromyography(EMG) of masseter(MM), anterior (TA)and posterior temporalis(TP) were compared with that of 16 normal individuals. Results ①Whenever at rest position or during maximum clenching and chewing, the EMG activities of MM, TA and TP of group Ⅰhad no differences with that of normal group.②At rest position, the EMG of TA and TP of group Ⅱwere obviously higher than that of normal group and group Ⅰ,in which the difference of EMG of TA between group Ⅰand Ⅱwas significant ( P < 0.05 ); During maximum clenching, the EMG of MM, TA and TP of group Ⅱwere significantly lower than that of normal group (respectively P < 0.01 , P < 0.01 , P < 0.05 ).The EMG of MM of group Ⅱwas also significantly lower than that of group Ⅰ( P < 0.05 ); During chewing, the EMG of MM, TA and TP of group Ⅱwere lower than that of other two groups. In which the EMG differences of MM and TP between group ⅡandⅠ were significant ( P < 0.05 ). Between group Ⅱand normal, the difference of the EMG of TA was also significantly ( P < 0.05 ).Conclusion In patients with severe tooth wear, absence of complete posterior tooth support was the main factor that influenced the functions of patients' masticatory muscles. Those with incomplete posterior support had higher muscle tension and lower muscle functions.
