Abstract:The optical network deploying WDM technology efficiently utilizes a single fiber's capacity, thus satisfied the increasing requirement for bandwidth. This paper shows that this kind of network in all-optical form is feasible and practical when applied in metro area, in which transparent transmission can be obtained. For the following section of this paper, we discuss the architecture of the metro all- optical network, and analyze the coordination of protection and restoration schemes between optical and electronic layer. Finally, we show the possible architecture bridging the transparency and the opacity, which is considered to be practical in the near future. And we further present the functional block of the photoelectric component-a novel transponder which is deployed in this architecture.

Abstract:Optical systems nowadays provide the basis for cost- effective transmission of large amounts of bandwidth over the Internet, and will enable its future growth and the spreading of new applications and services. WDM wavelength multiplexing technology is the newest technology which minimizes the costs. WDM generates multiple "virtual fibers" in the current fiber cable infrastructures and makes the capacity in the level of terabits per second. As packet switching in these data rates is not possible, Optical crossconnects are used to switch the wavelengths. In this paper, we analysis and discuss the optical network structure for IP over WDM. A novel WDM network architecture is given. The capabilities of the routers and the optical crossconnects make it possible to have high data rates by doing the multiplexing of the data rates in the optical layer, so SDH and ATM layers which traditionally did these become needless. As a result, integration of IP with the simplified and cost effective transport layer makes it possible to carry very high data rates.

Abstract:The optical fiber communication network is the important infrastructure for the modern information society. Thanks to the reduction of fiber loss, the improvement of transceiver devices by electro-optical-electrical conversion, the development of modulation technology and the introduction of digital signal processing, the capacity of optical fiber transmission has been greatly improved. In recent years, due to the large capacity demand of data-centers and the next-generation wireless communication, metro and short-range transmission scenarios below 100 km have attracted lots of attention based on direct detection. The historical evolution of optical fiber communication systems was firstly reviewed, then the limiting factors in the direct detection system were analyzed. Furthermore, the principle and system configuration of one-dimensional to four-dimensional self-coherent technology were introduced, and finally, the low-cost evolution trend of the optical coherent transmission system was prospected.

Abstract:Advances in optical transmission, switching, and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques have enabled next generation networks to be able to operate at several Terabits per second. WDM is an optical multiplexing technique that partitions the optical fiber bandwidth into multi-gigabit wavelength channels, each of which can be individually switched and routed. This paper discusses the architecture of optical network, analyzes the different network models, presents a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for IP over WDM systems. The new architecture allows the coexistence for different model networks. Experiments show that the hybrid structure is efficient for optical communication network.

Abstract:With the data service exploding, it gives increasing demand on network broadband, Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) is introduced into the communication networks, which can solve the broadband problem. This paper presents a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for WDM systems. In order to improve network efficiency and decrease network cost, the different network model should be connected for each other, so, how to realize the connection of the different network model is the hotspot of the research work on optical network. The recent development in WDM technology has led to a significant increase in the available transmission capacity in wide area networks. These networks are no longer limited by transmission bandwidth, but rather by the processing capability of electronic switches, routers, and multiplexers in the network. The hybrid connection methods have four types with Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling. Simulation to the hybrid model is also studied. The results indicate the novel scheme is an effective method.

Abstract:At present,the topology of optical network becomes more and more complicated and is going to be the mesh structure.A new design of intelligent real-time monitoring and protection of mesh optical network is put forward in this article. In this new design,the monitoring and protection system is composed of the bottom level of embedded monitoring devices and the top level of network management center.The function of computing the protection fiber route is added to the embedded monitoring and protection device.The device figures out the backup fiber routes of each working fiber in advance, and switches to the backup fiber route in time while the working fiber fails.In the new design,a kind of real unattended intelligent realtime monitoring and protection device of optical network comes true,and it meets the requirement of the development of mesh optical network.The transparent uninterrupted communication of mesh optical network is achieved.

Abstract:Fiber optic rings are widely deployed in metropolitan area networks (MAN). These rings currently employ architectures and protocols that are neither optimized for nor scalable to the network demand. Therefore, emerging technologies are being pushed to replace the traditional architectures. Among these technologies, optical burst switching (OBS) is an effective and promising technology. In this study, a novel architecture, dual-fiber OBS (DOBS), is proposed. This architecture has similar functions to those of fiber delay lines, partial wavelength conversion and deflection routing. A theoretical model is developed to evaluate the performance of DOBS, which is compared with single-fiber and simple two-fiber schemes by introducing them into ring and mesh MAN in simulations. The results reveal that DOBS can exponentially reduce the burst dropping probability. Moreover, since DOBS can be implement using commercially available devices and dark fibers, it is commercially viable in metro networks.

It brought about the development of optical networking technology in china, and the achievement has shorted the gap between China and advanced countries in the field of optical networking technologies.

Abstract:The transmission of IP packets over WDM technology (IP-over-WDM) is expected to be the basic transmission framework of the next generation network. In this paper, a novel architecture of optical network is presented. The optical network control plane is responsible for tracking the network topology and the state of network resources, and for establishing, removing and maintaining connections. These functions can be achieved using two fundamental protocols-the routing protocol for topology and resource discovery, and the signaling protocol for connection provisioning, maintenance and deletion. Additional protocols may also be used within the optical network control plane. By analysis and study of optical Internet architecture, a novel technology to construct the hybrid model architecture for IP over WDM systems is given and tested. The results show that the hybrid model architecture is efficient.

In order to improve network efficiency, we analyzed the characteristics of network routing, and proposed a new routing design method. In communication network, a good routing is very important for network operation. Routing technologies manage the flow of data between network segments in optical communication network. In addition, we also discussed the WDM optical network switching technology.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of global informatization, information has penetrated into every corner of human society. With the popularization of Internet, the transmission bandwidth of information becomes more and more important. Nowadays, people’s demand and dependence on information are becoming stronger and stronger. It is urgent to expand the capacity of wide area backbone communication network, and the optical network composed of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) can just take this role. In WDM network, it can transmit multiple optical signals of different wavelengths in one fiber at the same time. WDM has the advantages of large transmission capacity, strong technical adaptability, simple implementation and easy expansion. In addition, WDM optical network can also make full use of the huge bandwidth of optical fiber itself to carry out high-speed transmission. Now, the optical network using WDM technology has become the backbone network of long-distance transmission. This paper studies the optical fiber communication system and analyzes the structure of the optical fiber network. For the optical network, how to find the appropriate routing is a very important technology. After analyzing all kinds of basic routing technologies, this paper proposes a new policy based routing technology, and carries out relevant experiments. The experimental results show that the new routing technology has some advantages compared with the old routing technology.

Abstract:In this paper, a new architecture of the networks based on the proposed optical CDMA based on PON (OCDMA-PON) is presented, the design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied. The performance of networks based on the OCDMA-PON is analyzed in detail. Its bit error rate (BER) performance, networks scalability and transmission performance of such a system are studied under consideration of the multiple user interference (MUI) and the difference noise contributions. As shown in the study, the number of ONU/ONT, the channel link length, the number of available codes and the optical component characteristics deeply impact both the scalability and the transmission performance of such a system. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:Software defined optical networks（SDONs） integrate software defined technology with optical communication networks and represent the promising development trend of future optical networks. The key technologies for SDONs include software-defined optical transmission, switching, and networking. The main features include control and transport separation, hardware universalization, protocol standardization, controllable optical network, and flexible optical network applications.This paper introduces software defined optical networks and its innovation environment, in terms of network architecture,protocol extension solution, experiment platform and typical applications. Batch testing has been conducted to evaluate the performance of this SDON testbed. The results show that the SDON testbed has good scalability in different sizes.Meanwhile, we notice that controller output bandwidth has great influence on lightpath setup delay.

Abstract:Abstract Optical fiber has huge bandwidth, as a physical medium, it has good anti electromagnetic interference characteristics and excellent security performance, which is very suitable for the establishment of backbone transmission network. Wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) network based on optical fiber has been widely used. Using optical fiber for information transmission can give full play to the nearly unlimited transmission capacity of optical fiber. With the advent of the information age, data service has become the mainstream business, replacing the original telephone voice service. The great development of data transmission service further promotes the continuous development of WDM network technology. Among all kinds of services in optical network, IP service accounts for the largest proportion. In optical networks, switching is an important technology. Network performance is directly related to switching technology. With the development of optical communication technology, a variety of optical switching devices are introduced into WDM optical network, such as optical packet switching, optical burst switching and so on. This makes WDM layer have the ability of dynamic path establishment and removal similar to IP layer. In order to improve the performance of the optical network and reduce the blocking rate of the network, in WDM optical network, the services are designed in different levels. For some very important services, the highest priority is given, and the optical path channel with better survivability and higher fault tolerance is selected. For general services, it can be designed as a lower level service, and choose the appropriate optical path channel for transmission. The experimental results show that this hierarchical service design method can make more effective use of network resources, reduce the network blocking rate, and improve the overall performance of the network.

Abstract:Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of the next generation optical network is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. Existing work addresses contention resolution mostly in the wavelength domain (as wavelength conversion, WC), the time domain (buffering by using fiber delay lines, FDLs, the space domain (as deflection routing), and the burst domain (as segmentation). In this paper, a new architecture of optical networks-the server view based on optical networks is proposed. From the point of this new architecture, the network can be modeled as a server system with three type servers-the access server, the node server and the link server. The network performances such as cost, energy consume and network capacity can be affected by the capability of these three type servers. Unlike existing research activities that are focused on the node server design, we present the Dual fiber link (the link server solution) and IP calking (the access server solution) to ease the resource contention. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, computer simulations are conducted. The simulation results show these solutions can reduce the contention effectively with existing commercial devices.

Abstract:With the development of multimedia services,demands of higher channel capacity,wider service coverage and broadband wireless access advance radio over fiber(ROF) technology rapidly.Meantime,some new technologies,such as coherent technology,multiband technology,multiple input multiple output(MIMO),orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) and so on,are introduced and being optimized in ROF system.Employing such new technologies in ROF system,promises to solve the present technological bottlenecks in radio over passive optical network(RPON) and optimize the performance of the whole system.In this paper,the principles of those technologies,how they could be used in ROF system and their advantages as well as shortcomings are discussed and analyzed to provide a reference for future researchs.

Abstract:The emerging software defined networking (SDN) paradigm separates the data plane from the control plane and centralizes network control in an SDN controller. Applications interact with controllers to implement network services, such as network transport with quality of service. SDN facilitates the virtualization of network functions so that multiple virtual networks can operate over a given installed physical network infrastructure. Due to the specific characteristics of optical (photonic) communication components and the high optical transmission capacities, SDN-based optical networking poses particular challenges, but holds also great potential. In this article, we comprehensively survey studies that examine the SDN paradigm in optical networks; in brief, we survey the area of software defined optical networks (SDONs). We mainly organize the SDON studies into studies focused on the infrastructure layer, the control layer, and the application layer. Moreover, we cover SDON studies focused on network virtualization, as well as SDON studies focused on the orchestration of multilayer and multidomain networking. Based on the survey, we identify open challenges for SDONs and outline future directions.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the network traffic and the diversity of the network requirements bring network service providers new demands and challenges. In order to achieve better efficiency and resource utilization, we need to solve the problems caused by the heterogeneous network environment, such as the low resource utilization and the control and management collaboration problem of heterogeneous networks. The promotion of the software-defined network concept brings the network operators a new way of thinking to solve the problem caused by heterogeneous network environment, especially the convergence of packet and optical network. We propose a control architecture for packet and optical network convergence, including how to be compatible with the existing optical network control architecture. A series of network performance parameters have been demonstrated under various network environments on our testbed.

Abstract:We present a scalable and novel modular optical metro core node architecture and low cost metro access node architectures with edge computing functionalities employing photonic WDM integrated switches. Photonic integrated switches has been des igned as the building blocks to realize the modular metro node architectures, namely photonic WDM switches with express and add/drop ports, photonic integrated WSS aggregation/disaggregation functions for merging/dropping the network traffic, and photonic integrated multi-cast switch (MCS), as well as bandwidth variable transceivers aggregators to achieve multi-Terabits/second operation. Moreover, a dynamic re-configurable metro-access nodes based on low-cost 2-degree photonic integrated mini-ROADMs will be discussed. The lossless photonic WDM switches are based on InP technology and employ semiconductor optical amplifiers as on -chip gain element and fast switch. The photonic WDM circuits allows to switch multiple format data signals in wavelength, space, and time for full flexibility, scalability of the interconnected network elements as well as capacity. Applications to data center interconnects and 5G will be discussed and experimental results reported.
