Abstract:Schizophyllan interacts with various 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne derivatives to induce their chirally-twisted packing. A series of referential experiments using other polysaccharides ( amylose, pullulan, dextran, etc.) and a carbohydrate-appended detergent (dodecyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside) indicates that these 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne derivatives are accommodated within a tubular cavity constructed by a helical superstructure of schizophyllan. In these 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne derivatives, 1,4-bis(p-propionamidophenyl) butadiyne can be easily polymerized through UV-irradiation, in which schizophyllan acts as a one-dimensional mold to produce the corresponding poly(diacetylene)s with fibrous morphologies. Detailed investigations on this unique approach to prepare the nanofibers revealed that it includes two individual processes, that is, 1) UV-mediated polymerization of encapsulated 1,4-bis(p-propionamidophenyl) butadiyne to produce immature nanofibers and 2) their reorganization through hydrophobic interfiber interactions into ordered nanofibers. The other 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne derivatives could not be polymerized through UV-irradiation, indicating that the p-propionamido-functionalities play substantial roles for a suitable packing of the monomer for the polymerization. The other 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne derivatives, however, can be also polymerized through gamma-ray irradiation in the presence of schizophyllan to give the corresponding poly( diacetylene)-nanofibers, emphasizing the wide applicability of the schizophyllan- based strategy for polymerization of various 1,4- diphenylbutadiyne derivatives.

Abstract:We have demonstrated that one-dimensional supramolecular dye assemblies with a uniform diameter can be created by utilizing schizophyllan ( SPG) as a one-dimensional host. In the supramolecular nanofibers, the dye molecules are assembled into the different aggregation modes depending on the preparation procedures. The findings establish that SPG is useful for creating the supramolecular nanofibers, where temporal superstructures can be stabilized by the SPG-specific helical higher-order structure.

Abstract:We established a novel strategy to construct porphyrin-nanofibers which may mimic a fibrous porphyrin-assembly observed in a natural light harvesting system in green bacterium. Our strategy utilizes alignment of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinatozinc acetate in schizophyllan having one dimensional cavity along its helical superstructure. The resultant schizophyllan/porphyrin complex generates fibrous superstructures, in which porphyrins are aligned in a chirally-twisted packing mode.

Abstract:Chemical polymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiopherie (EDOT) in the presence of single-chain schizophyllan (s-SPG) gave water-soluble nanocomposites with the very uniform globular structure. The findings indicate that s-SPG is capable of acting not only as a one-dimensional host to create fibrous architectures but also as a neutral host to create nanoparticles. The mechanism is reasonably explained by the difference in the hydrophobicity of guest polymers or assemblies.

Abstract:Polymerization of a phenylacetylene monomer bearing a dendron moiety was carried out by using a rhodium complex Rh[(nbd)Cl_2]_2 as catalyst.The structure of the resultant was characterized with infrared(IR),nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopic techniques;the experimental data confirmed the generation of the expected polyphenylacetylene derivative(P1) with dendron pendants.P1 was soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform,N,N-dimethylformamide oxide,and tetrahydrofurran(THF),and its average molecular weight was about 57300.The steric repulsion of between the bulky dendritic side chains make the polymer main-chain take a stereoregular cis-cisoid conformation.Consequently,P1 exhibits a pronounced shoulder at around 440 nm in the absorption spectrum its THF solution.Meanwhile,the bulky dendrons around the polymer main-chain protect the main-chain from thermal-induced decomposition via the jacket effect,thus P1 lost 5% of its weight at a temperature of 295℃,which is about 70℃ higher than its parent polymer,or polyphenylacetylene.

Abstract:It has been demonstrated that a chiral, insulated poly(pphenylene ethynylene) (PPE) nano-wire can be created by a polymer wrapping method utilizing natural beta-1,3-glucan polysaccharide schizophyllan (SPG). Spectroscopic and microscopic measurements have revealed that PPE adopts a rigid conformation and exists as one piece in the helical hollow constructed by two SPG chains. Moreover, the inherent helical structure of SPG can induce the chiral twisting of the insulated PPE backbone. It is believed that the present system is really applicable for designing novel chiral sensors based on PPE.

Abstract:Phenylacetylene derivatives containing carbazole (1) and fluorene (2) moieties were polymerized by [Rh(nbd)Cl](2) into corresponding polymers P1 and P2 of high molecular weights (M-w similar to 150 x 10(3)-465 x 10(3)) in high yields (up to 98%). The polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and CV techniques. Hybrids of the polymers with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were prepared by simply mixing the two components in common organic solvents such as dichloromethane. The solvating power of the polymer carrying the electron-donating carbazolyl pendant (P1) is stronger than that of its counterpart carrying fluorenyl pendant (P2), due to the stronger donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction between the P1 chains and the MWNT walls. This work clearly manifests that D-A effect plays an important role in the polymer-aided MWNT dispersion in organic solvents. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Polymerization of a phenylacetylene monomer containing chiral center and thiolacetate was achieved by using a zwitterionic rhodium complex or Rh+ [eta-C6H5 (nbd) B- (C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. Chemical structure was characterized with infrared (IR) nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR), UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic techniques, and the experimental data confirmed the formation of the expected polymer. The obtained polymer was soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, tetrahydrofuran, and its weight-average molecular weight was about 7.32 x 10(4). The polymer was highly thermally stable; it lost 5% of its original weight at a temperature. of 336 degrees C, and about 31% residual weight was measured at 900 degrees C. SEM images showed that rod-like ordered entities were observed for the thin film fabricated by casting polymer solution (a concentration of 5.0 mg/ml, in chloroform) under ambient condition; while crystallites were observed when dilute polymer solution ( a concentration of 0.5 mg/ml, in chloroform) wits used to film fabrication. As revealed by TEM images.. when the evaporation rate was controlled to be slow and the concentration of polymer in chloroform was higher than 1.0 mg/mL,a polymer layer spread on the carbon supporting film on copper micro-grid; when polymer concentration was lower than 0.5 mg/mL, rnicrocrystallites with regular shapes were observed. Based on the macromolecular structure, the improvement of the thermal stability and the formation ordered microstructure can be tentatively ascribed to the role of chiral centers on the side chains of the resulted polyphenylacetylene.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1D) helical nanofibers were prepared through the self-assembly of an achiral all-conjugated diblock copolymer, poly(3-hexylthiophene)-b-poly[3-(6-hydroxyl)hexylthiophene] (P3HT-b-P3HHT) in an aged pyridine solution. Such helical nanofibers were formed by the π-π interaction between planar rigid polythiophene backbones cooperating with the hydrogen-bonding interactions between the polar hydroxyl groups of the side chains of polythiophenes. Intriguingly, the Young's modulus of such helical fibers is as high as ∼5.16 GPa, which is about twice that of P3HT films characterized by the peak force quantitative nanomechanical (PF-QNM) method. Furthermore, for the first time, we report that such helical fibers based on all-conjugated polythiophenes exhibited a relatively high field-effect mobility of 0.03472 cm2 V-1 s-1. This work provides a promising approach to craft crystalline helical nanostructures based on polythiophenes possessing both superior mechanical and good charge transport properties, which has great potential for application in other π-conjugated systems or building blocks for complex superstructures, and mechanical and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:By combination of dendritic topological structures with photopolymerizable diacetylene, here we report on supramolecular chiral assembly of the dendronized diacetylenes in water. These dendronized diacetylenes are constituted with three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs), bridged with a dipeptide from phenylalanine and glycine. These dendronized amphiphiles exhibit intensive propensity to aggregate in water and form helical fibers, which show characteristic thermoresponsive behavior with phase transition temperatures dominated by hydrophilicity of the dendritic OEGs. Topochemical polymerization of these supramolecular fibers through UV irradiation transfers them into the covalent helical dendronized polydiacetylenes. Chirality of these dendronized polydiacetylenes can be mediated through the thermally-induced phase transitions, but is also intriguingly dependent on vortex via stirring. Through stirring the solutions, chiralities of the dendronized polydiacetylenes are inverted, which can be reversibly recovered after keeping still the solution. Hydrogels are formed from these dendronized diacetylenes through concentration-enhanced interactions between the supramolecular fibers. Their mechanical properties can be greatly increased through thermally-enhanced interactions between the fibers with storage moduli increased from 20Pa to a few hundred Pa. In addition, through photo-polymerization, the supramolecular fibers are transferred into covalent dendronized polydiacetylenes, and the corresponding hydrogels show much improved mechanical properties with storage moduli about 10 kPa.

Abstract:Double hydrophilic block copolymers (DHBCs) based on poly(e-caprolactone)s, poly(6-acetoxyl-epsilon-caprolactone)- b-poly(4-N-piperilactone) (PCCL-b-PPIL), were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization and deprotection. The self-assembly behaviour of these block copolymers in aqueous solutions was thoroughly explored via a combination of UV-vis spectroscopy, zeta potential measurement, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was observed that "schizophrenic" aggregations were formed and triggered by pH, i.e., the copolymers could self-assemble into PCCL-core micelles at acidic pH and PPIL-core micelles at alkaline pH. In addition, pendant groups in each block of copolymers facilitated further chemical modification with fluorescent dyes such as 1-(hydroxymethyl) pyrene and FITC. The fluorescence properties of pyrene-functionalized copolymers were closely related to their aggregate morphology, which could be adjusted simply by altering the environmental pH values. Meanwhile, it is expected that this novel type of degradable schizophrenic block copolymer holds potential application in stimuli-responsive fluorescent probes.
Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Dna-Aliphatic Polyether Dendron Hybrids

Abstract:A new kind of amphiphilic DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrids consisting of a flexible hydrophobic polyether dendron and a single stranded DNA are synthesized, which are characterized by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, HPLC and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). In aqueous solution, as DNA length shortens from 24 mer to 18 mer, to 12 mer, to 6 mer, the hydrophilic DNA content in the DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrid decreases, the morphology of the aggregates change from spherical micelles to nanofibers, and to irregular clusters. These different assemblies from DNA-aliphatic polyether dendron hybrids in aqueous solution are depended on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic ratio between the polyether dendron skeleton and DNA strand. However, when adding 1/10 (VIV) organic solvents such as dichloromethane (DCM), diethyl ether (EtOEt) or tetrahydrofuran (THF) into aqueous solution and after the assembling process that the sample solution is heated to 90 degrees C for 30 min and subsequently cooled to room temperature overnight, the third generation dendron conjugated 18 mer DNA hybrid could assemble into nanofibers. Meanwhile, in the THF/H2O (1: 10, V/Y) mixed solvents, with the same assembling process, as different dendron generations (the second or third generation) and different DNA lengths (6 mer, 12 mer, 18 mer or 24 mer) in the hybrids, all these hybrids could assemble into long nanofibers. The assembled structures have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and fluorescent experiments. Subsequently, we verified the assembling mechanism that the spherical micelles and nanofibers contain a hydrophobic dendron core and a hydrophilic DNA shell by hydrophobic fluorescent molecule Nile Red encapsulation experiment and precise DNA hybridization to load gold nanoparticles at a size of 10 nm. The hybridization property of DNA at the shell associated with the encapsulation ability of dendron at the inner core indicated the potential application in gene or drug delivery and nanotechnology.

Abstract:Cyclopolymerization of isopropylidene diallylmalonate (1) in CH(2)Cl(2) using as the initiator a crystallographically defined alpha-diimine Pd(II) complex with a trans-azobenzene strap (trans-3) proceeds stereospecifically to give a cycloolefinic polymer that is rich in threo-disyndiotactic sequences (st(rich)-2; syndiotactic tetrad content = 60% at -10 to 0 degrees C). Polymer 2, when perfectly threo-disyndiotactic, adopts a "barb"-shaped geometry with its cyclic malonate pendants sticking out alternately up and down along the rigid main chain. Under appropriate conditions, st(rich)-2 regularly self-assembles, not only in the solid state but also in solution, into nanofibers that eventually give rise to physical gelation of halogenated solvents such as CH(2)Cl(2). In sharp contrast, a reference polymer 2 that is rich in threo-diisotactic sequences (it(rich)-2), which likely adopts a helical geometry, has poor self-assembly capability in solution and neither forms nanofibers nor induces physical gelation of CH(2)Cl(2).
Effect of Side Chains on the Low-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Polyphenylene-Based “rod–coil” Graft Copolymers in Solution

Abstract:We synthesized a series of "rod-coil" graft copolymers containing a laterally expanded poly-p-phenylene (PPP) backbone grafted with nonionic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) or ionic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) side chains (denoted as PPP-g-PEO or PPP-g-PAA). The effect of the side chains on the self-assembly of the graft copolymers in THF-water mixed solvents was investigated. The PPP-g-PEO copolymers exhibited temperature-dependent self-assembly behavior, which is affected by the grafting percentage (GP) and the degree of polymerization (DP) of PEO. At 25 degrees C, which is higher than the crystallization temperature (T-c) of the PEO chains, PPP-g-PEO self-assembled into ultralong helices with controlled pitches when P root N > root 6l(m)/4b, where P represents GP, N denotes DP of PEO, l(m) expresses the length of a repeating unit in PPP, and b is Kuhn monomer length of a free jointed PEO chain; when P root N < root 6l(m)/4b, only nonhelical nanowires were observed. At 10 degrees C, which is below T-c of PEO, PPP-g-PEO self-assembled into polygonal multilayer nanosheets when P root N >= root 85.8l(m)/4b, while ultralong helices or nanowires were formed when P root N < root 85.8l(m)/4b. The PPP-g-PAA copolymer showed pH-sensitive self-assembly behavior. An increase in the electrostatic repulsion among the FAA coils in response to the pH change of the aggregate solution from 3 to 7 resulted in the formation of multiple low-dimensional nanostructures, including multilayer nanosheets, nanostrips, and helical nanostrips.

Abstract:In order to produce materials with tailored structures and functions via supramolecular self-assembly of molecular precursors in a predictable fashion, it is necessary to develop 'supramolecular methods' based on structurally simple 'supramolecular synthons'. Thus, the formation of one-dimensional aggregates from pi-conjugated molecules requires a combination of non-covalent interactions that efficiently suppresses lateral aggregation, promotes one-dimensional aggregation, and is also compatible with a productive pi-pi overlap of the constituent molecules. In the present work, we demonstrate that oligopeptide-polymer derivatives comprising a flexible polymer segment terminally attached to a beta-sheet-forming oligopeptide segment are structurally simple substituents that perfectly fulfill these requirements. We synthesized a matrix of diacetylene model compounds that carried oligopeptide-polymer substituents with varying degrees of polymerization of the attached polymers and different length oligopeptide segments. We combined solution-phase IR spectroscopy, AFM imaging and the topochemical diacetylene polymerization as a highly sensitive probe for the molecular arrangement and the degree of order inside aggregates obtained in organic solvents. The thus determined molecular parameters for the reliable formation of well-defined nanoscopic fibrillar structures with uniform diameters, and defined helical 'core-shell' morphologies were then successfully transferred to analogous perylene bisimide and quaterthiophene derivatives, demonstrating the versatility and robustness of the chosen molecular design.

Abstract:Optically active π-conjugated block copolymers are of considerable significance and interest, but their controlled synthesis and helical self-assembly remain challenging. In this study, π-conjugated block copolymers consisting of polyfluorene (PF) and poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI) segments were facilely prepared in one pot through two sequential polymerizations. First, a Pd(II)-terminated PF precursor was synthesized via the Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization of 7-bromo-9,9-dihexylfluorene-2-boronic acid pinacol ester, which was catalyzed using a Pd(0)/t-Bu3P system. Then, PF-b-PPI copolymers with controlled molar mass and narrow dispersities were fabricated via controlled polymerization of phenyl isocyanide monomers utilizing Pd(II)-terminated PF as the catalyst. Benefiting from the π-conjugated structure of the PF block and the helicity of the PPI block, the resulting PF-b-PPI copolymers could self-assemble into single-handed helical nanofibers. In the self-assembly process, chirality was transferred from the helical PPI block to the self-assembled helical nanofibers, thereby endowing them with optical activity and excellent circularly polarized luminescence properties.
