Abstract:Advantages and disadvantages of the simulated annealing algorithm are given by analyzing its mechanism and flow process..It is found that the "two criteria with three functions" is the key factor to affect the results of the SA optimization.Then the design principle and method for main parameters and operations in SA are presented.A modified SA schedule is proposed to reduce search time and more optimization processes are employed in the flow process.A two-stage strategy is designed for the annealing and sampling process.The feasibility of designing parallel SA is also studied,and three ways for parallel SA are given.Finally,the modified SA algorithm is applied to combinatorial problems,such asTSP problem,and function optimization problems.

Abstract:Simulated Annealing (SA) is a powerful stochastic search algorithm applicable to a wide range of problems for which little prior knowledge is available. The annealing schedule, i.e., the temperature decreasing rate used in SA is an important-factor which affects SA's rate of convergence. This paper investigates annealing schedules used in various SA algorithms, e.g., the classical SA (CSA) [1], fast SA (FSA) [2] and very fast SA (VFSA) [3], and proposes a new SA (NSA) algorithm whose annealing schedule is exponentially faster than that of VFSA. The heuristic proof given in the paper follows the same method as that used by Szu and Hartley [2] and Ingber [3] in their studies. The paper also discusses the relationship between the annealing schedule and SA's rate of convergence.

Abstract:Simulated Annealing (SA) is a powerful stochastic search method applicable to a wide range of problems for which little prior knowledge is available. It can produce very high quality solutions for hard combinatorial optimization problems. However, the computation time required by SA is very large. Various methods have been proposed to reduce the computation time, but they mainly deal with the careful tuning of SA's control parameters. This paper rst analyzes the impact of SA's neighbourhood on SA's performance and shows that SA with a larger neighbourhood is better than SA with a smaller one. The paper also gives a general model of SA, which has both dynamic generation probability and acceptance probability, and proves its convergence. All variants of SA can be uni ed under such a generalization. Finally, a method of extending SA's neighbourhood is proposed, which uses a discrete approximation to some continuous probability function as the generation function in SA, and several important corollaries of the general model are given.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is developed to solve the global optimization problems with continuous variables. By introducing a method of adaptive conversion function, the determination of initial temperature, usually a difficult problem in SA has been solved and becomes independent to the practical problems solved. Combined with the success-failure method and the variable metric method, the conception of effective shift-increment is proposed to improve the method generating new solutions. On the basis of the newly defined relative precision, a termination criterion is proposed to make better balance between the computational efficiency and the solution accuracy, and then, enhance the efficiency and robustness of the SA algorithm. The numerical test examples are given to demonstrate the feasibility and high-efficiency of the improved SA algorithm proposed in the paper.

Abstract:An improved annealing simulation method is discussed with the focus on the optimization design problems with continuous variables, discrete variables, hybrid discrete variables and Large-scale TSP. This method not only has memory function and complementary search process but also applies an innovative neighborhood structure to improve the searching ability. Besides, it provides the solution to discretize the discrete variable by average method. The program compiled in VC++ environment achieves the technology to display the computational progress on real-time. Therefore, it is highly intuitive. The results of some practical computational examples show that the improved simulated annealing method is quite efficient and reliable in solving this several kinds of problems, and also it has quite good practicability. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The simulated annealing (SA) algorithm has been recognized as a powerful technique for minimizing complicated functions. However, a critical disadvantage of the SA algorithm is its high computational cost. Therefore, it is the goal of this paper to investigate the use of the critical temperature in SA to reduce its computational cost. This paper presents a systematic study of the critical temperature and its applications in the minimization of functions of continuous variables with the SA algorithm. Based on this study, a new algorithm was developed to exploit the unique feature of the critical temperature in SA. The new algorithm combines SA and local search to determine global minimum effectively. Extensive tests on a variety of functions demonstrated that the new algorithm provides comparable performance to well-established SA techniques. Furthermore, the new algorithm also improves the determination of the starting temperature for the SA algorithm. The results obtained in this study are expected to be useful for improving the efficiency of SA algorithms, and for facilitating the development of temperature parallel SA algorithms.

Abstract:This paper focuses on improving the standard form of the classical simulated annealing algorithm (CSAA). A novel method of improving the performance of CSAA by the variable universe adaptive fuzzy logic system (VUAFLS) is studied. We develop the VUAFLS to adjust the annealing temperature, which is a very important parameter governing the performance of CSAA, and this algorithm is named VUAFLS-CSAA. The main innovations of VUAFLS-CSAA lie in the application of VUAFLS containing the fast cooling mechanism and reheating mechanism relative to the characteristic of the sustained temperature fall of CSAA. Compared with the conventional method for controlling annealing temperature, VUAFLS-CSAA can control the annealing temperature more effectively, leading to the high efficiency of CSAA. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared with CSAA through two examples. One is the image restoration problem, and the other is the traveling salesman problem (TSP). The experimental result indicates that the new method proposed in this paper can improve the efficiency of CSAA by tremendously shortening the iteration optimization process. And at the same time, the successful application of the new method for tackling two different problems demonstrates the generality of this method. In addition, techniques that can further improve the performance of CSAA are discussed.

Abstract:The basic rationale of SA(simulated annealing) is presented.Being capable of searching optimum results globally,it could be utilized to optimize the current distribution for equally spaced arrays,and to optimize the position of elements as well as the current distribution for unequally spaced arrays.Furthermore,it can also be used to thin full arrays.Results obtained by simulation show that SA is an effective optimization algorithm for array antenna synthesis.

Abstract:A high-performance general program is presented to deal with the multi-parameter optimization problems in physics. Considering the requirements of physical application, some small but significant modifications were made on the conventional simulated annealing algorithm. A parallel realization was suggested to further improve the performance of the program. Mathematical and physical examples were taken to test the feasibility and the efficiency of the program. Abstract:Simulated annealing (SA) has proved to be an effective global optimization algorithm. But SA's long computation time limits SA's wide applications in practice. This paper presents an efficient composite simulated annealing (ECSA) algorithm, where two special techniques are adopted, i.e.: (1) a combined use of a state generator based on the Cauchy distribution and Gaussian distribution in SA random searching; (2) a combined use of SA global searching and conjugate gradient (CG) local searching. The simulation results have shown that ECSA can not only largely speed up the optimization progress, but can also give better solution results than the fast SA (FSA).

Abstract:Simulated annealing (SA) is a stochastic global search approach, which is of the ability to escape from local minima with deteriorative accepted probability and has been successfully applied to many difficult combinatorial and numerical optimization problems. But it is well known that the performance of SA highly depends on its parameters, especially the annealing schedule. Traditionally, the parameters of SA are determined empirically or by trial and error. In this paper, the determination of optimal SA parameters with limited computation effort is viewed as a stochastic problem, and then a systematic procedure based on ordinal optimization (OO) and optimal computing budget allocation (OCBA) is applied to select the most reasonable parameter combination. Simulation results based on flow shop scheduling benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness.

Abstract:A simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is an effective method for solving optimization problems, especially for combinatorial optimization problems. However, SA algorithms rely heavily on the iterative mechanism of the neighborhood structure. When the scale of the problem becomes larger, the convergence rate is slow and it is difficult to reach the global optimal solution. In this paper, seven special intelligent operators are introduced to a SA algorithm, and therefore, a new state transition SA (STASA) algorithm is proposed for combinatorial optimization and continuous optimization problems. The performance of the STASA algorithm is tested on the traveling salesman problem and some continuous function optimization problems. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and reliable.

Abstract:We propose a derivative-free implementation of Dekkers and Aarts’ continuous simulated annealing (SA). Essential in DFSA is the ’random direction’ local technique that we introduce. We study the convergence properties of the resulting algorithm and test its performance on a set of 50 problems. Numerical results are presented which show the robustness of the algorithm. Numerical comparisons with SA, two derivative-free simulated annealing algorithms and three population-based global optimization algorithms show that the derivative-free SA, DFSA, offers a reasonable alternative to some recent global optimization algorithms, especially for problems requiring a ‘direct search’ type algorithm.

Abstract:An annealing evolutionary algorithm (AEA), which combines aspects of genetic algorithms and simulated annealing, is proposed to find the global minimum of a non-linear least square function for spectral fitting. By application of the algorithm to the fitting of structural parameters from experimental extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of two Cu samples, it was found that reasonable results were obtained. Comparing with genetic algorithms and EXCURVE88, the AEA method is faster and more accurate in analysis of EXAFS spectra.

Abstract:The determination of the critical failure surface is very important in slope stability analysis.The simulation-annealing algorithm,combined with simplified Bishop's method,is used to search for the critical surface of a slope.The algorithm is improved based on analyzing the reasons of the defects of it and is implemented by means of computer programming.Through comparing calculation with typical examples,it shows that the question of local minimization can be avoided effectively using the improved algorithm,so the method has practicability.

Abstract:In this paper an annealing evolution algorithm is applied to the optimization of continuous problems. The algorithm uses an evolutionary strategy to guide the search in simulated annealing. Furthermore, we discuss an implementation of the algorithm and compare its performance with the conventional simulated annealing algorithm and the parallel genetic algorithm. The performance evaluation is carried out for a standard set of test functions from the literature. Here a breakthrough can be reported. The annealing evolution algorithm is able to find the global minimum of Rastrigin's function of dimension 500 on the VAX 8600 machine.
