Abstract:We give a simple way to detect the geometric phase shift and the conditional geometric phase shift with Josephson junction system. Comparing with the previous work(Falcl G, Fazio R, Palma G.M., Siewert J and Verdal V, {\it Nature} {\bf 407}, 355(2000)), our scheme has two advantages. We use the non-adiabatic operation, thus the detection is less affected by the decoherence. Also, we take the time evolution on zero dynamic phase loop, we need not take any extra operation to cancel the dynamic phase.

Abstract:Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is a burgeoning technology at the nano-scale range, with the potential for lower power consumption, smaller size and faster speed than conventional complementary metal–oxide semiconductor-based technology. Because of its ultra-density integration and its inherent physical properties, fault-tolerance is an important property to consider in the research and manufacture of QCA. In this paper, one type of defect, in which displacement and misalignment occur coinstantaneously, is investigated in detail on rudimentary QCA devices (majority voter (MV), inverter, wire) with QCADesigner. Another MV with rotated cells is also proposed, and it is more robust than the original one. Simulation results present the defect-tolerance of these devices, that is, the maximum precise region the defective cell can be moved moreover, with correct logical function. These conclusions have a meaningful guiding significance for QCA physical implementation and fault-tolerance research.
Computational Characterization of Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases in Open Quantum Systems

Abstract:It is a challenging problem to correctly characterize the symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in open quantum systems. As the measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC) utilizes non-trivial edge states of the SPT phases as the logical qubit, its computational power is closely tied to the non-trivial topological nature of the phases. In this paper, we propose to use the gate fidelity which is a measure of the computational power of the MBQC to identify the SPT phases in mixed-state settings. Specifically, we investigate the robustness of the Haldane phase by considering the MBQC on the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki state subject to different types of noises. To illustrate how our criterion works, we analytically and numerically calculated the gate fidelity to find that its behavior depends crucially on whether the noises satisfy a certain symmetry condition with respect to the on-site $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. In particular, the fidelity for the identity gate, which is given by the sum of the non-local string order parameters, plays an important role. Furthermore, we demonstrate that a stronger symmetry conditions are required to be able to perform other (e.g., the $Z$-rotation gate) gates with high fidelity. By examining which unitary gates can be implemented with the MBQC on the decohered states, we can gain a useful insight into the richer structure of noisy SPT states that cannot be captured solely by the string order parameters.

Abstract:Solid-state quantum coherent devices are quickly progressing. Superconducting circuits, for instance, have already been used to demonstrate prototype quantum processors comprising a few tens of quantum bits. This development also revealed that a major part of decoherence and energy loss in such devices originates from a bath of parasitic material defects. However, neither the microscopic structure of defects nor the mechanisms by which they emerge during sample fabrication are understood. Here, we present a technique to obtain information on locations of defects relative to the thin film edge of the qubit circuit. Resonance frequencies of defects are tuned by exposing the qubit sample to electric fields generated by electrodes surrounding the chip. By determining the defect's coupling strength to each electrode and comparing it to a simulation of the field distribution, we obtain the probability at which location and at which interface the defect resides. This method is applicable to already existing samples of various qubit types, without further on-chip design changes. It provides a valuable tool for improving the material quality and nano-fabrication procedures towards more coherent quantum circuits.

Abstract:In quantum error correction, information is encoded in a high-dimensional system to protect it from the environment. A crucial step is to use natural, low-weight operations with an ancilla to extract information about errors without causing backaction on the encoded system. Essentially, ancilla errors must not propagate to the encoded system and induce errors beyond those which can be corrected. The current schemes for achieving this fault-tolerance to ancilla errors come at the cost of increased overhead requirements. An efficient way to extract error syndromes in a fault-tolerant manner is by using a single ancilla with strongly biased noise channel. Typically, however, required elementary operations can become challenging when the noise is extremely biased. We propose to overcome this shortcoming by using a bosonic-cat ancilla in a parametrically driven nonlinear cavity. Such a cat-qubit experiences only bit-flip noise and is stabilized against phase-flips. To highlight the flexibility of this approach, we illustrate the syndrome extraction process in a variety of codes such as qubit-based toric codes, bosonic cat- and Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes. Our results open a path for realizing hardware-efficient, fault-tolerant error syndrome extraction.

Low-overhead non-Clifford fault-tolerant circuits for all non-chiral abelian topological phases

Abstract:We propose a family of explicit geometrically local circuits on a 2-dimensional planar grid of qudits, realizing any abelian non-chiral topological phase as an actively error-corrected fault-tolerant memory. These circuits are constructed from measuring 1-form symmetries in discrete fixed-point path integrals, which we express through cellular cohomology and higher-order cup products. The specific path integral we use is the abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten state sum on a 3-dimensional cellulation, which is a spacetime representation of the twisted quantum double model. The resulting circuits are based on a syndrome extraction circuit of the (qudit) stabilizer toric code, into which we insert non-Clifford phase gates that implement the ``twist''. The overhead compared to the toric code is moderate, in contrast to known constructions for twisted abelian phases. We also show that other architectures for the (qudit) toric code phase, like measurement-based topological quantum computation or Floquet codes, can be enriched with phase gates to implement twisted quantum doubles instead of their untwisted versions. As a further result, we prove fault tolerance under arbitrary local (including non-Pauli) noise for a very general class of topological circuits that we call 1-form symmetric fixed-point circuits. This notion unifies the circuits in this paper as well as the stabilizer toric code, subsystem toric code, measurement-based topological quantum computation, or the (CSS) honeycomb Floquet code. We also demonstrate how our method can be adapted to construct fault-tolerant circuits for specific non-Abelian phases. In the appendix we present an explicit combinatorial procedure to define formulas for higher cup products on arbitrary cellulations, which might be interesting in its own right to the TQFT and topological-phases community.

Error mitigation and circuit division for early fault-tolerant quantum phase estimation

Abstract:As fully fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of solving useful problems remain a future goal, we anticipate an era of "early fault tolerance" allowing for limited error correction. We propose a framework for designing early fault-tolerant algorithms by trading between error correction overhead and residual logical noise, and apply it to quantum phase estimation (QPE). We develop a quantum-Fourier-transform (QFT)-based QPE technique that is robust to global depolarising noise and outperforms the previous state of the art at low and moderate noise rates. We further develop a data processing technique, Explicitly Unbiased Maximum Likelihood Estimation (EUMLE), allowing us to mitigate arbitrary error on QFT-based QPE schemes in a consistent, asymptotically normal way. This extends quantum error mitigation techniques beyond expectation value estimation, which was labeled an open problem for the field. Applying this scheme to the ground state problem of the two-dimensional Hubbard model and various molecular Hamiltonians, we find we can roughly halve the number of physical qubits with a $\sim10\times$ wall-clock time overhead, but further reduction causes a steep runtime increase. This work provides an end-to-end analysis of early fault-tolerance cost reductions and space-time trade-offs, and identifies which areas can be improved in the future.

Abstract:To build a fault-tolerant quantum computer, it is necessary to implement a quantum error correcting code. Such codes rely on the ability to extract information about the quantum error syndrome while not destroying the quantum information encoded in the system. Stabilizer codes are attractive solutions to this problem, as they are analogous to classical linear codes, have simple and easily computed encoding networks, and allow efficient syndrome extraction. In these codes, syndrome extraction is performed via multi-qubit stabilizer measurements, which are bit and phase parity checks up to local operations. Previously, stabilizer codes have been realized in nuclei, trapped-ions, and superconducting qubits. However these implementations lack the ability to perform fault-tolerant syndrome extraction which continues to be a challenge for all physical quantum computing systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate a key step towards this problem by using a two-by-two lattice of superconducting qubits to perform syndrome extraction and arbitrary error detection via simultaneous quantum non-demolition stabilizer measurements. This lattice represents a primitive tile for the surface code, which is a promising stabilizer code for scalable quantum computing. Furthermore, we successfully show the preservation of an entangled state in the presence of an arbitrary applied error through high-fidelity syndrome measurement. Our results bolster the promise of employing lattices of superconducting qubits for larger-scale fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Abstract:Motivated for the fault tolerant quantum computation, a quantum gate by adiabatic geometric phase shift is extensively investigated recently. Due to the enviromental noise, the decoherence time for a quantum state can be very short. In the adiabatic quantum computation, if we change the Hamiltonian slowly, the decoherence error is increased, if we change the Hamiltonian faster, the adiabatic condition is broken and the error caused by the nonadiabaticity is increased. In this paper, we give a nonadiabatic scheme for the geometric phase shift and conditional geometric phase shift with the nuclear magnetic resonance system(NMR). Essentially, the new scheme is simply to add an appropriate additional field. With this additional field, the state evolution can be controlled exactly on a dynamical phase free path. Geometric quantum gates for single qubit and the controlled NOT gate for two qubits are given. In our non-adiabatic scheme, the geometric quantum gates can run as fast as the usual quantum gates.

Abstract:Quantum error-correcting codes, such as subspace, subsystem, and Floquet codes, are typically constructed within the stabilizer formalism, which does not fully capture the idea of fault-tolerance needed for practical quantum computing applications. In this work, we explore the remarkably powerful formalism of detector error models, which fully captures fault-tolerance at the circuit level. We introduce the detector error model formalism in a pedagogical manner and provide several examples. Additionally, we apply the formalism to three different levels of abstraction in the engineering cycle of fault-tolerant circuit designs: finding robust syndrome extraction circuits, identifying efficient measurement schedules, and constructing fault-tolerant procedures. We enhance the surface code's resistance to measurement errors, devise short measurement schedules for color codes, and implement a more efficient fault-tolerant method for measuring logical operators.

Abstract:Measurement-free quantum error correction (MFQEC) offers an alternative to standard measurement-based QEC in platforms with an unconditional qubit reset gate. We revisit the question of fault tolerance (FT) for a measurement-free variant of the Steane code that leverages multi-qubit gates and redundant syndrome extraction, finding previously overlooked phase-flip errors that undermine FT. We then construct a revised MFQEC circuit that is resistant to all single-qubit errors, but which nonetheless cannot tolerate certain correlated errors. In order to investigate FT systematically, we introduce an efficient method to classically simulate MFQEC circuits with (i) Clifford gates for syndrome extraction, (ii) syndrome-controlled Pauli operations for decoding, and (iii) a Pauli noise model. We thereby find a pseudothreshold of $\sim0.7\%$ for our revised MFQEC Steane code under a restricted noise model previously considered in the literature. We then relax noise model assumptions to identify general requirements for FT with multi-qubit gates, finding that existing multi-qubit neutral atom gates are incompatible with fault-tolerant syndrome extraction in a straightforward implementation of both measurement-based and measurement-free variants of the Steane code. Decomposing multi-qubit gates into two-qubit gates similarly spoils FT. Finally, we discuss the theoretical ingredients that are necessary to recover FT for MFQEC codes, including single-shot FT and a recent proposal by Heußen \textit{et al.}~[<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2307.13296" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.13296">arXiv:2307.13296</a>] to achieve FT by ``copying'' errors onto an ancilla register. By combining multi-qubit gates, redundant syndrome extraction, and copy-assisted FT, we construct a measurement-free and fault-tolerant variant of the Steane code with a pseudothreshold of $\sim0.1\%$.

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of the Josephson junction system in the computational subspace is investigated. A scheme for the controlled not operation is given for two capasitively coupled SQUIDs. In this system, there is no systematic error for the two qubit operation. For the inductively coupled SQUIDs, the effective Hamiltonian causes systematic errors in the computational subspace for the two qubit operation. Using the purterbation theory, we construct a more precise effective Hamiltonian. This new effective Hamiltonian reduces the systematic error to the level much lower than the threshold of the fault resilent quantum computation.

Abstract:Recently, Zou et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 042325 (2010)] pointed out that two arbitrated quantum signature (AQS) schemes are not secure, because an arbitrator cannot arbitrate the dispute between two users when a receiver repudiates the integrity of a signature. By using a public board, they try to propose two AQS schemes to solve the problem. This work shows that the same security problem may exist in their schemes and also a malicious party can reveal the other party's secret key without being detected by using the Trojan-horse attacks. Accordingly, two basic properties of a quantum signature, i.e. unforgeability and undeniability, may not be satisfied in their scheme.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the phase sensitivity with parity detection on an SU(1,1) interferometer with a coherent state combined with a squeezed vacuum state. This interferometer is formed with two parametric amplifiers for beam splitting and recombination instead of beam splitters. We show that the sensitivity of phase estimation approaches the Heisenberg limit and give the corresponding optimal condition. Moreover, we derive the quantum Cramer-Rao bound of the SU(1,1) interferometer.

Exact Quantum Algorithms for Quantum Phase Recognition: Renormalization Group and Error Correction

Abstract:We explore the relationship between renormalization group (RG) flow and error correction by constructing quantum algorithms that exactly recognize 1D symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by finite internal Abelian symmetries. For each SPT phase, our algorithm runs a quantum circuit which emulates RG flow: an arbitrary input ground state wavefunction in the phase is mapped to a unique minimally-entangled reference state, thereby allowing for efficient phase identification. This construction is enabled by viewing a generic input state in the phase as a collection of coherent `errors' applied to the reference state, and engineering a quantum circuit to efficiently detect and correct such errors. Importantly, the error correction threshold is proven to coincide exactly with the phase boundary. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of condensed matter physics, machine learning, and near-term quantum algorithms.

Abstract:The development of robust architectures capable of large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computation should consider both their quantum error-correcting codes and the underlying physical qubits upon which they are built, in tandem. Following this design principle, we demonstrate remarkable error-correction performance by concatenating the XZZX surface code with Kerr-cat qubits. We contrast several variants of fault-tolerant systems undergoing different circuit-noise models that reflect the physics of Kerr-cat qubits. Our simulations show that our system is scalable below a threshold gate infidelity of pCX∼6.5% within a physically reasonable parameter regime, where pCX is the infidelity of the noisiest gate of our system, the controlled-not gate. This threshold can be reached in a superconducting-circuit architecture with a Kerr nonlinearity of 10MHz, an approximately 6.25-photon cat qubit, single-photon lifetime of ≳64μs, and a thermal photon population ≲8%. Such parameters are routinely achieved in superconducting circuits.
